Out of all the restaurants I dined at over two weeks in the Netherlands and France, my lunch at RIJKS® was the single best meal I had -- and I had many excellent meals. But only at RIJKS® was I really surprised, and only at RIJKS® did I find myself obsessing over dishes long after the meal was a distant memory. The dish that really knocked me for a loop was the amuse bouche, a broth of leeks with tarragon oil served as a small shot. I found myself craving noodles with it; the restaurant is really missing something by not serving this with ramen or udon or something. (The young ladies at the next table said the exact same thing.) The prix fixe lunch menu is an exceptional deal with fantastic dishes: The green gazpacho delivers the freshness of green tomatoes, bell peppers, unripened strawberries, and herbs. The optional laab course is fresh and light, with the goat meat having no funky, "goaty" flavor. The chicken thigh course represented Indonesian flavors better than either of the actual Indonesian restuarants I visited in Amsterdam, while the dessert had a restrained, faint sweetness that finished the meal perfectly. Service was warm and friendly, and the room is comfortable and elegant. The wood paneling sets the perfect balance between modernity and the historicism of the Rijksmuseum that houses it. Most importantly, the meal was an excellent price for the quality of the food and service (€55 for three courses, €20 for the additional laab course). Even if one has no plans to tour the Rijksmuseum, no one should pass up the chance to dine at RIJKS® when in Amsterdam. read more

Went here for lunch and the food and service were amazing! I had the tasting menu and my friend had the vegetarian tasting menu. They made sure that my menu was lactose free. The flavors were wonderful and the descriptions of the food sound so simple, but the flavors are very complex. Excellent pacing of the courses. Checking out this one Michelin-star restaurant located at the museum square next to the national museum. They offer two different tasting menus along with the à la carte menu. They also allow you to change some dishes on the tasting menu if you prefer something in the à la carte. Very flexible~ The staff was very welcoming and friendly! This restaurant was renovated last year with a fresh interior and a more natural feeling. We picked two different kinds of tasting menus, so we got to try more dishes. Everything was beautifully plated. The chef used a lot of homegrown vegetables and was inspired by many arts from the museum. Here are my top 3 favorite dishes from the meal: Pork collar with eggplant: the best pork collar I've ever had. So tender and juicy! The eggplant glazed with sauce was very flavorful as well~ Millefeuille of beetroot: such an earthy dish and elevated with Tomasu soy sauce and fresh parsley oil Bread & Butter: it was so good that we asked for three rounds. Ambiance was casual, cozy, food is good, yet paid almost 10 euros for a French breakfast that came with a small croissant, a glass of orange juice, half mandarin, some jams and a few sprinkles of pomegranates. Don't get me wrong, the food design was beautiful and appetizing, juice fresh, food quality fine. But it is pricey. The hostess was friendly, sweet, warm and accommodating, fitting her post well. Great Michelin experience for a reasonable price! We were in Amsterdam for New Year's Eve and were lucky to find a reservation at Rijks for their New Year's Eve menu. They were only open for Dunner (in between lunch and dinner) so we ended up getting a reservation for 3:30pm. The restaurant itself is right next to the Rijksmuseum and Museumplein, making it a great location. The prix fixe menu start with warm and a truffle whipped butter. So delicious we had to be careful not to fill up on bread! Then we had a sweet potato and caviar appetizer which we enjoyed but the hard texture of the sweet potatoes were a bit odd. Next we had lobster done 2 ways which was fantastic! The lobster was so succulent and the flavors were bold. This was our favorite course. Finally for our entree we had beef Wellington sliced table side. The portion was very generous and we were definitely super full afterwards. Of course we weren't done and got a dessert box to end which a variety of small chocolates and confections. We were absolutely stuffed by this point but the desserts were a great ending to the meal. Rijks was a somewhat-reasonably priced Michelin experience. My family and I were visiting Amsterdam and had read about the concentration of very high quality restaurants in the city, so wanted to have a taste! We made a lunch reservation online about 1 week+ in advance (highly recommended). The service was quite good (nothing extraordinary), and the food was all local, very fresh, and incorporated various Dutch elements. Portion sizes were all on the small size, but that's typically expected at places like these. We ordered the garlic veloute, kolhrabi and oyster, 21-aged duck breast, and monkfish cheek and tail. Everything was pretty unique, but our favorite was the duck breast. Their menu rotates seasonally. Was it a cool experience? Definitely. Would I go out of my way to go again? I may have reviewed this in May of 2017. It's spectacular having just received a Michelin star. We had the seven course tasting menu, each paired with a different wine. We sat at the chefs bar, which is always a treat. We realized that the amount of labor that went into prep and presentation of each dish was absolutely mind boggling. Some of the highlights were the red cabbage gazpacho, a swed goat cheese dish and the main course of aged beef with spicy salsa and separate mint sauce. The 2 dessert courses were equally spectacular. Like most great tasting menus, we left feeling perfectly full but not overstuffed like holiday birds. The wine choices were incredibly eclectic and tasty; I had only heard of half of the ten or so we tried. Not a place most could afford to eat regularly, but a super treat for us on a dreary evening in Amsterdam. Wow! We saw this place after walking around 'I Amsterdam' sign. It's a bit upscale, price-wise. However, it's not one of those fancy restaurants with unusual ingredient combinations that are just too weird. Everything was a bit exotic and yet familiar. Definitely worth every euro. Be warned about ordering ribeye, they bring it out raw to you, table-side, so you can decide between 4 weeks or 8 weeks. I didn't like having to be subjected to it. So I had no idea that this was a Michelin star restaurant as the price is too affordable for such a level! But I'm not complaining, just pleasantly surprised! We had a seven course dinner, with an amuse bouche to start. There was a champagne pairing as well, which I believe we had 5 of. As expected of any Michelin star restaurant, the setting, decor, presentation, service, and of course, flavors were all exceptional. The service could've slowed down on the pacing just a tad so that we can spend a little more time savoring our food and drinks. We enjoyed every dish served especially that guinea fowl which was moist an flavorful, the accompanying fried skin was perfectly crispy and salty, and the oyster and vinaigrette was heavenly. My husband and I are not beets people, but dang, that "thousand" (or was it "hundred") layer beet was so good we might be converts. read more

This was undoubtedly the most unique meal concept that I've ever had! This locations is not only a National Museum but it's also a 5-Star Restaurant. It started out with Veal Sweetbread Ceviche. This was very tasty. Course 2 was Brussel Sprouts with Curry...not a fan but still different. Round 3 was Fillet of a Turbot (best course of the meal for me) with 4 being Roasted Hare Fillet. Absurdly small bits of lovely food at absurdly high prices makes no sense in a city filled with great restaurants, including many within a 5 minute walk of this place. We paid $120 for what amounted to 4 glasses of wine and 3 appetizers. If that seems appealing, go for it. I won't be going back. read more

The Rijks restaurant is a very classy establishment located just out front of the Rijks Museum. This place is extraordinarily modern and is a great option for fine dining after viewing Late Rembrandt. The service was great and the primary dining prix fixe menu was fantastic, a bit eclectic, but fantastic. I was fortunate enough to dine in the private dining room next to the kitchen which really enhanced the overall dining experience. Overall, I'd really recommend this place to anyone with a refined palate looking to experience some fine dining and take in some absolutely gorgeous pieces of Rembrandt's work. Everything we ordered was just outstanding! From the time you sit and eat the crispy fried leaves on your table that look like decoration to the last dessert. This is a very modern restaurant with a menu for for a Michelin Starred restaurant. The dishes are extravagantly toiled and well thought with unusual presentation. The flavors are perfect. It deserves a 5 but I gave it a 4 because the pork skin would have been better if lightly crisp. The cheese desserts were so unusual both in taste and presentation. Given the Michelin star status I had high expectations. The food was well done, the atmosphere nice, but the service lacked knowledge and warmth. My husband and I had a very special and memorable dinner here one evening during our vacation last August. I feel remiss in not submitting this review sooner because I will likely not be giving my dinner the accolades that I should be, although since it was such a memorable meal, I think that I can recall it in very fine detail. Although Rijks has a Michelin star (well deserved BTW), we were able to obtain a reservation somewhat easily. It is located near the Rijks museum and the location is absolutely lovely because of the surrounding gardens, which I absolutely adored. FYI, I am a garden nut. The gardens were in all their glory and they provided a gorgeous backdrop to the evening. The restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner, and it is a must stop if you are in the museum district. Actually, you should go there if you are in Amsterdam, period. The hostess immediate sat us to our table. The decor was sleek and architectural with an open view of the kitchen, as well as an open view to the gardens. There is an extensive bar and view of the wine fridge. Lots of foodie eye candy. Loved it. As I have mentioned in many of my other reviews, I have a few odd allergies (no night shades, such as potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, etc.) and my husband does not eat shellfish or pork. This can be challenging and frustrating for kitchens, especially when it comes to tasting or prix fixe menus, so we generally shy away from those and order a la carte. However, the staff and the kitchen were BEYOND accommodating. I did not have any of the pomposity experienced by the other Yelpers; quite the contrary. The waiter painstakingly explained the menu in careful detail and they prepared special options for each of us. I loved the langoustine, the celeriac and the cauliflower and the scallop. He loved the beef tenderloin, gazpacho and the chicken and asparagus. The wine list was fantastic. I had two glasses of the Vinho Verde and had the Chocolate Whiskey for dessert. Each dish focused on what was local and in season, and all of the dishes looked like works of art - so appropriate for a restaurant located in the heart of the museum district. (I know.... corny but the plates were just beyond gorgeous) The bread and whipped butter are unreal. The chef came out at the end of the meal, which was so lovely. I asked if he had a book and he said that he hoped to soon. He should. The presentation was gorgeous and the menu was inventive. If you were to come, make a reservation. Every table is provided with bread and whipped butter along with a side platter with crackers and another salad like dish. Beautiful restaurant, great location. Stopped in for a lunch. Ordered short ribs $28 for one meal, scallops $20 for the other meal. Waiter suggested we double each order since the meals are small. Since the wife and I generally share one meal, we did not double. The servings were small, extremely small. Also, I could not find a scallop in my meal; it turns out it was a mashed scallop the size of a pea wrapped on something else very thin. I understand many folks love the modern euro food. I know I was in the wrong restaurant for my tastes. Right after this very small meal and unsatisfying meal we looked for another, better meal. You know when you come across one of those food experiences that are so amazing that you don't even know where to begin. Well. This would be one of those experiences. I knew that the Rijks would be good, or so I'd heard, but it exceeded any expectation that I had. It's all about smaller dishes (they say 3 or so but frankly two was more than enough - especially if you want room for dessert...and trust me you do) bursting with flavor. And oh the food. I just don't even know where to start. It was so good. So. Good. For me as a vegetarian I had some pretty good option and was not left dissatisfied. Came here for lunch after touring the Rijksmuseum and everything was absolutely great. Everything from the cocktails to the food was creative and delicious. My husband and I really wanted to have Dutch inspired food so I really loved when I saw (I guess) the mission statement in the menu that said that the main focus of the restaurant was to deliver a Dutch product with flavors that have influenced the Dutch kitchen for centuries. We ordered cocktails alongside the lunch fixed menu (3 dishes) so we got green gazpacho, steamed Poulet noir chicken, and es buah (descriptions of the food are included in the menu picture). The decor is modern & vibe casual which was surprising to us since this is a Michelin rated restaurant. The waiters are a bit frazzled but efficient. Now on to the food...we ordered the 6 course tasting, thinking this is the best way to try their star dishes, boy were we wrong! The first course was really unpleasant, the second wasn't any better, the third was overly salty, the fourth however was their saving grace! The beetroot was sublime & in fact a star! It took this restaurant from a 2 star dining experience to a 3 for me. The sweet dishes that followed were forgettable. Looking over at our neighbor's table they were presented with amazing cuts of meats to choose from, which made me realize we should have ordered a la carte. After a long ardous walk around the museum I was extremely hungry and it so happened the closest restaurant was Rijks. To me it was highly assuming and judgmental, thinking museum restaurants around the world are highly overpriced and serve basic sandwiches and at the most a simple overpriced steak. Boy was I sooooo wrong. I looked highly unkempt and tardy from a long day at the museum since morning. I was served with attention to a table. And was explained meticulously what each ala carte was. the waiter's recommendations were the green gazpacho, scallops and zucchini, cod and ratatouille, and lastly the veal shank with apricot and buckwheat. Setting is beautiful and cozy at the museum and when walking in it smells so delicious. The staff is friendly and welcoming and the menu diverse. Not too many things for vegan/vegetarian but managed to taste a few plates. I also eat fish so I was able to try the cod and oysters. Oysters were divine especially with an afternoon champagne and the frozen green pea gazpacho was a favorite. The other dishes were lovely to look at a tasty but not the best Michelin Star I've been to. Perhaps the meat options are more for what you want. A very fun afternoon but also long.
