We had a delicious meal at RED as one of our first dinner spots when we visited Amsterdam, and I was happy to see that I could get a reservation on the same day we wanted to come here. The interior is nice, the chairs in the photos are really what got me because they look like they would be super comfortable, but they weren't really. The serving team was pretty young, but helpful and accommodating. One of the girls was running the food, and brought some of the wrong food a few times, which happens, but it was remedied. I was grateful Red took me without reservations. The restaurant is lovely however, like so many post Covid establishments, it is suffering on service. They were short at least 2 dining room servers and there was no presence of a host(ess) or manager. Appetizer arrived before wine or water. Both main course and appetizer was served at room temperature which means it sat for a while in the kitchen. Unfortunate as the food was very good, but lost so much given the temperature. Would have been a 5 star review other wise. Hopefully, they can get get their dining room experience back in order. read more

Worst meal in Amsterdam, what a shame for being a decent dining place! Me and my friend walked in and there were many empty spaces, the waitress said follow her and then rambled something that neither me and my friend understood, then we followed her to the kitchen, a waiter stopped us and asked her what was going on, she rambled something again and the waiter led us to a table. The food, after so many years I finally see the oyster platter served in a plastic plate with salt rather than metal plates with ice, also no lemon, only vinegar. The meat of the oyster looked like they were bullied in the oyster farm or they were leftovers, and I paid €26 on this. Still we finished it, and waited for our stake for long. The gentleman sitting next to us waited for 20 mins to simply get his check. So did we. We ordered a medium rare rib eye stake for two, not sure of the standard here but to my understanding this is called a sunburn, only 1/10 was cooked. The plates were cold as the weather. And the worst part, I can still feel the cow bleeding in my mouth, we managed to almost finish the dish, and soon the stake turned cold too. I understood how my ancestors hunting in the wild and what were they eating. By the way the only decent thing was the fries on the side. We paid €102 for this meal, regretting why we didn't get a refund. read more

We stumbled upon Red as we were ambling around the southern canal ring of Amsterdam. The menu looked enticing, so we decided to try it. We apparently arrived before the rush and just eked in without a reservation. The atmosphere was romantic with deep green walls, velvet chairs, candles, flowers, and convex mirrors that let you gaze all around the room without moving. Jimi Hendrix played in the background (not what I was expecting, but it worked). We had the tenderloin with fries, the house-made bread, and the Caesar salad with chicken. I was disappointed with the steak. It wasn't as tender as I would expect, but maybe that was our fault because we requested it cooked to medium. The Caesar salad on the other hand was superb! The salad was fresh and crisp, the chicken grilled and juicy, and the bacon delicious and salty. It was slathered in dressing with large slivers of Parmesan. I normally don't enjoy a lot of dressing on my salad, but after walking around town all day, the extra fat was appreciated. My personal favorite was the scallops. It was perfectly cooked, very fresh and juicy on the inside. One of the best Cornish Hen I've ever had. Chicken was not dry at all. It was seasoned well and moist. The steak came with the sauce bearnaise on the side. It was an interesting combo. Every dish I had was great, recommend it for a visit if you are a fan of modern European food!! This is my third negative rating out of the 30+ reviews I've done. I go out of my way to try not to negatively reviews places, but the behavior by a staff member here was unfortunate enough for me to act. Now, perhaps I'm not accustomed to the culture in Amsterdam, but considering that it's a city that thrives from tourists from all over the world, I had assumed that open-mindedness wouldn't be out of the question. I had just landed from a great flight less than an hour ago. I did not change. I looked for a decent restaurant to have some steak on Yelp. Found Red. I came in wearing jeans and Jordan's (13 He Got Games- to be specific) as I saw no dress code. It took me over five minutes to be greeted. Mind you, this is a small restaurant where everyone can see everyone. The waitress who greeted me, I believe her name was Pascal (sp?), looked at me in confusion and asked, "Can I help you?" Lol. By the way, the couple that came in just after me received a nice, "May I take your coat?" I told her I wanted to eat. By paying for food. At this business at which she is employed. She hesitatingly nodded. Ten minutes later, she walked by me and I had to stop her and ask her for a menu. At this point, I'm already turned off with the place but then again, I'm hungry and want some steak and Malbec so... I ordered. There was another waitress that ended up helping me: Tanya (sp?) We were drinking a 70€ wine and I asked for a new glass with the new bottle. Waitress were in shock and told that it is the same wine. I said I know and still want a new glass. Terrible service. Waited for over an hour to get our meals. I asked for the restaurant manager and spoke about the long wait. He responded by telling me that the system indicated that it was only a ten minute wait and he trusted the system over our experience. I came here for a birthday dinner with my in-laws and it has a very classy, high-society feel to it. The clientele was a mix of expats and preppy Dutch people (who wears suits and ties on a Sunday night??) Bonus points for impressing my in-laws ;) They only serve lobster and steak, and overall the food was tasty and we had a great evening. It also gets very packed, so make a reservation online or arrive after 9pm for a chance to get a table. Food: 4/5 The lobster is available in 2 ways, either with mayo or butter. I thought it was a bit strange to eat lobster with mayo, but it was actually very tasty. The whole lobster is a good medium size and the meat was not overcooked. They also give you a handy scoop to help get meat out of the claws. The tournedo was ordered medium rare and it actually arrived medium rare. The meat was tender and juicy but a bit lacking of flavor if you don't dip it in the accompanying sauce. It did indeed melt in your mouth. This steak was also better than the one from Look's (another surf & turf restaurant). All mains were accompanied with all you can eat fries and salad! Though we were too full to take advantage of a refill... We also had dessert (Grand Dessert, Lemon sorbet & prosecco, lemon tart, cheese platter) and those were all tasty. Service: 4/5 Our server was attentive, friendly and polite; just the perfect amount of checking in, not once was my mouth full when she came by. They also take your coat at the beginning so you can really enjoy sitting in the giant comfy arm chairs. Red has been my go-to special occasion dinner place for years. I keep going back for the ambiance, the wine and the steak. Oh, and of course the blue cheese chocolate cake too. The decor is gorgeous. Red doesn't do those traditional Dutch wobbly wooden tables chairs. It's very plush and upscale. The wines are amazing and not super expensive. The steak is perfect every single time. The whole menu consists of steak or lobster or both, all served with a side of fries and salad. The fries probably aren't the best but nobody comes here for the fries anyway. The chocolate tarte and the cheese plate are both amazing. Don't skip the dessert wine. It's a dessert in itself. You'll get all of this for a very reasonable price. There are many much more expensive restaurants in Amsterdam that aren't half as good. Just be sure to book online in advance. read more

Red was recommended by my brother in law, who is a world traveler and has a distinguished palate for exquisite food. This recommendation did not disappoint. For starters, the steak tartar was one of the best I've ever had, and was a generous portion for the price. My daughter got the lobster bisque, and described it as "good but not amazing". For the meals, we all enjoyed a mix of lobster and filet, and all were absolutely delicious. They were served with sides of fries and salad, both of which were also delicious. We weren't drinking alcohol tonight, but they had a very nice selection of red and white wines by the glass or bottle that were also very affordable. For dessert, we tried the chocolate lava cake, the cheesecake and the assorted desserts with coffee. The lava cake had blue cheese baked into it (yes, blue cheese). The taste was subtle, but not my favorite. The cheese cake was the best. It was awesome. Service was also 5 star excellent. Definitely somewhere we look forward to returning to! Judging by the already written reviews, there is consensus - this is a great place. 5 stars hands down. First, and this is gonna sound weird, the number 1 feature is that for main course you get to choose steak, lobster, or steak and lobster. That's it. I love it when you don't have to read two tomes of War and Peace before making a choice for your meal. To back that up, steak was done to perfection. I prefer mine medium well. Most places get offended and label it immediately as "shoe leather order" and give me the look. This place didn't even blink. It was the perfect amount of no-blood, pale pink middle steak, amazingly juicy and tender. Lobster was not overcooked, which seems a rarity these days, for some inexplicable reason. Desert choices had desert wine pairings preselected on the menu. Sweet. Finally, the resto has beautiful ambiance. Interior decor has classy feel with velvet couches and chairs (some of them are highlighter green) accentuating same colored textured wallpaper. Walls adorned with beautiful ornate framed mirrors. Largest window overlooking a canal bridge where you could take in the Amsterdam vibe while sitting in a cozy, soft light ambiance of the restaurant. The classic decor is diluted (broken) by a large quasi-chic poster of young woman blowing a green bubble gum, spread on the ceiling. Cool. Service was also smooth (which is sadly still an exception rather than the rule in Amsterdam). Awesome place for a romantic, warm date. Ask to be seated on the perimeter - middle row of tables seems a bit squished. Prime spot is right in front of large window. Our group of 4 did not have a bad comment about our experience. We made reservations at RED at the behest of our B&B hosts while staying in Amsterdam, and we weren't let down. They are called RED (though the restaurant's decor is very, very green) because their specialty is steak and lobster - both of which are red when cooked correctly, of course! My husband and I both opted for the surf and turf option. Everything was perfectly cooked. I'm not normally a big fan of lobster, but this was very sweet and tender. The meals also came with a side salad and some excellent fries. It was very well-priced for what you get, particularly considering it's steak and lobster. You could easily pay over $100 each for a meal like this in the US. We unfortunately didn't have room for dessert, but I hear the "Grand Dessert" (a little bit of everything) is to die for. read more

You'd never know you were standing outside "Red" because there are no signs or names, but also because the interior is painted entirely green! But alas, a restaurant is judged by the quality of its food, and the food here is exceptional. They only serve two mains, steak and lobster, and no appetizers. They have a fairly good wine list (about 3 each sparkling, white, and red by the glass and another 5 or so each available by the bottle) and the pre dinner bread (which will cost you 2,5 euro per person) was fresh and hot inside. The lobster was cooked well, nothing to write home about, but no flaws of any kind. The beurre de chef is delicious. On the other hand, the steak was magnificent. Easily the best steak I've had in years. My only complaint was that the portion was not overly generous. Don't get me wrong, it's not a small portion, I'm only saying that I wish I had a piece twice the size - it was that good! The service was very good, the atmosphere very romantic, and the place seemed to be very busy on a Monday night. The menu is only available in dutch, but the waitstaff is happy to answer questions. I should start by saying that I am a pescatarian who is mostly vegetarian. The menu is very limited and I based my decision to eat at Red on the Yelp 4.5 star review which has never let me down before. We were met at the door by our waiter who immediately inquired as to whether or not we had a reservation to an empty dining area on a Thursday night. He then "went back to check" with whomever to see if we could be seated. They accommodated our party of two and we were seated (the dining area had one family of 5 seated at the time of our arrival, by the time we left there were 2 other tables seated). I was surprised by the limited menu and the lack of anything without an animal protein but decided to go out on a pescatarian limb and order the lobster bisque which I regretted immediately as it tasted so poorly that I didn't want to eat more than 1 spoonful. My boyfriend ordered the half lobster which he thought was mediocre. You will be charged for water and bread. I would not recommend this place to anyone I know and have no idea how it has received such a high rating. The service was less than ideal. It took our server to notice I hadn't eaten my soup until my boyfriend completed his meal. The server removed my soup from the bill which was appropriate since it wasn't palatable. In summary there are so many better options in Amsterdam. read more

My amazing boyfriend took me here for my birthday dinner and it was lovely. They have an extensive wine list and a very simple menu - steak and lobster. We had both - half lobster as starter and then a steak - and both were very tasty. We had the dessert sampler which was excellent. The only slightly tacky bit is you have to pay for the bread but do get it as the olive oil is amazing! I don't eat steak (or red meat) very often, but when I do, I prefer it to be of a very high-quality. This place only serves tournedos and lobster and even though I would usually choose a seafood or vegetarian option, I opted for the tournedos. I have absolutely no regrets. It was a tender, melt-in-your-mouth, perfectly-cooked piece of meat. It was so memorably good, that the side salad and fries (which were also good) could have been terrible and it wouldn't have mattered. I'll definitely be back for more! If I want steak in Amsterdam, this will be my go-to place! The location and ambiance is perfect too--a great spot for a date or dinner with friends. read more

I had the lobster bisque (which is not cream based), the 1/2 lobster starter with the seasoned butter (which is better than the cream dip suggested), and I also had a glass of the Malbec which was delicious! We did some research on a number of sites and decided to try Red for dinner on our last night staying in the city. First thing to note is that unless you are in the "off season" then you need to book a reservation. We only decided on the day that we wanted to visit and we were seriously limited on options for our evening meal time. To their credit they do move people though in a methodical manner but this might be an issue for some folks as they seem to allocate a 90 minute slot for each party ... maybe it is more if you have a bigger group (there were just the 2 of us). Anyway on to the experience. Great service, not too stuffy and not too attentive.. just right. Food choices are limited as they do Lobster and Steak - but you should have got the picture on that from other reviews. The one thing that is not on their menu (either online or the printed one) is the surf and turf option... half a lobster and a fillet steak. They don't really mention the price but basically you pay a little more than half the cost of a full lobster plus the cost of a steak...very fair and quite reasonable. We elected for surf and turf and welcomed the option to have the lobster half as an appetiser. We munched on some very nice bread with olive oil as we waited and sampled some of the wines available by the glass (reasonably priced) - all very nice. The lobster was very nicely cooked and delicious - we tried both ways, one with garlic butter and the other with the house mayo on the side and the house mayo approach won the vote so consider that of you've not tried it. On to the steaks - which were really the stars of the show. Cooked exactly as requested (i.e. European medium rare and medium) and absolutely top quality pieces of fillet. Beautifully seasoned and cooked and with a very nice bearnaise sauce. The steaks literally melted in the mouth they were so tender. The accompanying fries and side salad were also excellent. We spent around €100 including a nice gratuity - and we had some wine, bread,, water etc. We felt that was good value for a very nice, uncomplicated meal in a relaxed and classy environment.
