Foie gras
Andrew L.

Great place for a no-nonsense, solid meal. We had dinner at Van Speyk on an early Wednesday evening when it wasn't too busy: The Foie Gras that we had as an appetizer was very good and the lamb chops for the entree were solid.

This feels a bit like a tourist trip. I'd skip going forward. The service was okay...ish. I felt a bit like an inconvenience being a single table. My order wasn't completely right and I didn't really have a way to flag them. I asked for tap water - got bottled. I asked for an espresso and never got it. Just small things. The herring was pretty fishy and warm (like beyond room temperature). My main dish (Stamppot) was fairly good and presentation was nice. I didn't really consider a dessert because of service.

We had a wonderful dinner with family. The service was terrific and the food was delicious. I had the lamb chops, which were cooked just right and tasty. My wife had the Stamppot, a Dutch traditional dish with mashed potatoes, slow cooked meatball with gravy, served with smoked sausage, bacon and mustard. I paired mine with a Dutch single malt whisky, Frysk Hynder - light, not smoky and an easy drink. My wife had a Dutch wine, which was also nice. Others had the SEASONAL SALAD - Dutch tomatoes, buffalo cheese and rocket spice - and JAVASTRAAT - Indonesian style grilled chicken, with peanut sauce, prawn crackers, coconut sprinkle and pickles, served with home made fries. Everything was delicious.

Delicious food, strong drinks, and very friendly and lovely staff! Nice place for a sit down meal in Amsterdam.

This meal was the sendoff meal before we headed back to the states from our Amsterdam trip, and I am so glad we decided to come here, it really was special. First off, reservations are a must, because restaurants fill up super quick in Amsterdam due to the crazy amount of tourists (like us!) The decor is very nice. Not too fancy and elegant, but beautiful chandeliers and classy environment. We had a great seat by the window, and two very accommodating waiters who helped us choose what we liked. The food was delicious, from top to bottom, we ordered the most Dutch meal that we could, and the kitchen really delivered. Trip Advisor recommends this place as one of the restaurants to go to, and I can validate that they are correct.

Many thanks to the concierge at the DeWitt for getting us a table! What a delicious and memorable meal. Terrific drinks with a perfectly healthy prepared steak. Service was not very friendly or attentive but we had a great time anyway. Undoubtedly, our best meal in Amsterdam.

Beautiful dining experience - don't feel this is a stuffy place, it's not. But don't wear grubby clothes in there, please. Keep it nice!

A classic European restaurant with amazing service. My wife and I loved this place and the food was presented so nice and incredibly delicious. This is what I was looking for in Amsterdam.

The decor is simple but very pretty! It's an intimate setting

A very sweet restaurant with friendly and fun staff. The drinks were tasty and they even sent out a sparkler for my birthday!

Escargot

Nice ambiance! Old building started since 1659! I ordered Escargot with Chardonnay, Pan seared Fois Gras with Bordeaux red! Crispy outside and tender inside makes you wanting more ! Raw Oysters of course! Amsterdam Croquet! Beef Tartar and Lobster Bisque ! Delicious delicate exquisite and inexpensive! With professional service of manager Joe ! I definitely will be back again !!

Oyster...again, I'm blanking on the details of the dish but it was also really good.

Currently this is the most underrated restaurants in Amsterdam - phenomenal, probably Michelin-level cuisine. Their vegan ceviche is genius and really everything there is top notch, has surprising/brilliant flavor combinations...the chef is really top notch. That said I saw bitterballen on their Instagram recently & I'm worried they may be trying to cater to the lowest common denominator, which really would be tragic. (Seriously, if all you want is botterballen, go to Febo or virtually any other Dutch bar/restaurant and leave this gem to us foodies.)

Absolutely amazing experience. Fantastic food, decor & ambaince, and staff. We loved our time here. We felt like we had found a hidden gem in the busy city centre of Amsterdam. We also loved that we were able to easily make reservations on Open Table. I highly recommend Van Speyk and will visit again when I return to the area.

We were able to get seated right on the window area. We chose menu 5, which was just enough for two people. Everything was delicious! Their pea soup is out of this world. Don't know why as it is a simple dish but wow! I also love their herring. It was so delicious that I wanted seconds. It paired so well with their onions and mustard. And their bitterballen was just enough bite. Creamy and crispy! We also got a combination of the hutspot. They were all delicious! Although for me the meatball was just a tad bit salty but it is probably just me! Everything else was spot on. I love their dessert at the end. It was a great way to end the night. Our server and their staff were all amazing! Very friendly and welcoming. Yes it is a tourist spot but totally worth it.

We did not have one but they were happy to seat the 2 of us and invited us to switch tables once another couple left (they were checking out). Small space, can accommodate groups of 2-4, cozy atmosphere, lots of the traditional blue and white ceramics on the wall (dishes and tiles). Traditional Dutch cuisine: we ordered the Boerenkoolstamppot with smoked sausage and Zuurkoolstamppot with smoked sausage and a slice of apple pie to share for dessert. The food arrived piping hot in about 20 minutes. It was sooo delicious--the tasty juicy sausage pairs perfectly the mashed potatoes with either sauerkraut or kale. The apple pie was also tasty--larger chunks of apple and more spices less sugar than American apple pie from what I can tell. Perfect with whipped cream. A must visit if you're in Amsterdam and want to try traditional fare. Highly recommended!

Located on the Rozengracht, it's super central and easy to get to from just about anywhere in the Jordaan or the Center. * The Atmosphere: It's dark, moody, and has a very cool "late-night" energy. Even if you aren't sure what it is from the street, the vibe inside is unmistakable. * The Food: If you like meat, this is your spot. The burgers are massive and juicy, and the ribs literally fall off the bone. * The Vibe: It's a bit louder and more energetic than a standard restaurant, making it perfect for a night out with a group or a casual date with great cocktails. It gets incredibly busy, so even though it feels like a "hidden" spot from the outside, you'll definitely want to book a table ahead of time. Overall: A total neighborhood win. Don't make the mistake of walking past it for as long as I did!

We entered and seated ourselves, and within 5 minutes, a staff person greeted us, brought us a flask of tap water (tastes great and clean) and two glasses, and gave us menus. We ordered a short rib sandwich for him and a chicken Caesar sandwich for me. These come à la carte but you can add sides if you want. I was glad we didn't because the portion was generous. One thing I've noticed here is that the bread is always high quality--our sandwiches came in baguettes about 8 inches long --I had to cut mine in half to eat it lol. Both were savory and flavorful and satisfying. The meat was tender and well seasoned. We savored every bite! They both had crispy bacon in them as well. Very filling! Just what we needed to energize us after our morning at Keukenhof!
