The first night we arrived at the Crowne Plaza, we asked the concierge for a dinner suggestion. He said Van Speyk. However, we wanted to walk some of the city so we decided to venture away from this area. We came back the next night (a Friday). The decor of this restaurant is very nice. Beautiful chandeliers hang from the ceiling. We had a group of 3 and were promptly seated. I do not think this is normal as the night prior, the place was full when we walked past. I think it would be best to make a reservation. We had a huge lunch so I wanted something a bit lighter for dinner. I opted for the sea bass dish. My colleagues had the venison and duck. The food came out rather quickly which was nice. My sea bass was delicious! Everything on the plate was great! My colleagues also said their dishes were great! We ordered dessert. We were looking for a restaurant with authentic Dutch cuisine and the concierge at our hotel recommended this place. The food and service were both great!! For appetizer I had the Erwtensoep, a traditional Dutch pea soup with smoked sausage and it was delicious! Totally hit the spot on that freezing cold night! For dinner I had the Eendenbout which was homemade confit of duck-leg with Dutch potato and sauerkraut mash and orange gravy. It was perfectly cooked and flavored...everything in the dish complemented each other superbly! Been walking past this place for years and on a rainy chilly night, finally went in. What a pleasure. Service was impeccable delivered with flair and flourish. Small menu but perfectly adequate. Reasonable prices for good quality well prepared ingredients. Began with escargot perfect prepared and seasoned. Spouse had catch of the day excellent piece of halibut and I had the brisket. Both reasonable portions, fish with some delectable veggies, brisket with a nice sauce and fork tender. Finished with apple pie ice cream and mint tea. $120 euros with tip for great food and service. 4.5 stars We were looking for a place to eat and went to three places before we found one that had seatings with no wait. I didn't have much expectation on the food since there was no wait. Who would have known the food was actually pretty good! My husband have been trying beef stew on this trip and thought this one made it the best. My lamb chops were cooked perfectly. Went here yesterday for our date night. I picked this place because I liked the decorations and I was right. Its perfect for the date night, if you manage to get a booth and sit next to each other. We had oysters, shrimp crockets, escargot, steak and rack of lamb, the desert of everything and two bottles of Malbec. With tip, it was 220 Euro. I visited the restaurant on Mid September 2018 at night with a group of 6. It was my first night in town and read online that it served local dishes, had good reviews and was close to our Hotel, so I decided to give it a try. My plate choice was the Classic Beef Stew which was really good. The other guests were satisfied as well with their orders, who had Dutch traditional and non-traditional dishes. The restaurant had Jopen IPA on draft and a couple other Dutch beers, which were served at the right temperature. The waiter was friendly and provided good service. The prices were fair, particularly considering the location and ambience, which can be described as darkish, and cozy yet spacious. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, but I found the indoors more appealing. If you wanna try Dutch food and are close by, I certainly recommend you considering visiting it. read more

The concierge at our hotel (the Renaissance which a Marriott hotel) recommended Van Speyk .. showed us a menu and called to get us a reservation. We walked right over and were seated immediately which was very impressive on a Friday night. Our server said it was fortunate that the concierge had called for us. This was my first experience with white asparagus and I LOVED it. We started with escargot ... and bread. I had the salmon with white asparagus , mash potatoes. My husband has a lamp chop with veggies .. a potato casserole and something that was like a spicy polenta ... but not sure what it was. We both had a couple beers and enjoyed our meal. The service was fast and friendly until it came to getting the check and paying. We found a good deal of the restaurants in Amsterdam to be VERY slow to give you a check .. we suspect that since tips aren't as common they aren't in any hurry to get you out of there. The restaurant is very pretty. I just felt the prices where too high for the quality of the food, execution of the dishes, and service that I received. I tried to Dutch Sole (Noordzeetong) which I felt I could have prepared as equally-well at home. The Van Speyk salad sounded delicious but it was also lackluster. The menu is fabulous. I was interested in the seafood risotto. When I was informed it came in a bought ore-made mix, that should have been my heads-up. Amazing too notch place. Been around for about 7 years per the waiter jP and it shows. Their menu is remarkable. I actually walked downstairs in my very happy state to find out who the chef was to tell him how amazing the food was. While I'm a vegetarian, folks at the table who were not said the escargot and the steak special was hands down the best meal they had in years. As the sole vegetarian the onion soup and mashed potatoes and mushrooms were so outstanding I plan to go back again tomorrow night as their sides of veggies were better than any other main veggie dish a chef had made us in Amsterdam. Really disappointed. The service was just terrible, I really wish I remember the name of the woman waiter who took care of my boyfriend and I. She acted like she had better things to do and very snobby. We both had the seafood risotto which was good. We just couldn't get over how horrible the service was. Mind you we are a very easy table, no substitution or extras. Just be pleasant and nice and we will have a great time. While the pork chops was nicely seasoned it was so over cooked that it was difficult to cut and more so to eat. To be fair, they said it would be fully done and that was an understatement. Had an awesome meal. Sanne took great care of us. She was very patient and helpful. One member of our party has an emotional allergy to mayonaise and Sanne made sure he did not get in trouble. Adam and Wayne had a gr8 view for the entire evening and were nothing but smiles. Adam and Wayne had the escargot por duo. I had the Dutch oysters which were awesome. For dinner we had Adam (lobster which the chef deshelled for adam), WAYNE(Entrecote with champignon sauce), Scott was blown away by the sudderlapjes(Dutch stew). Great food and incredible service! Checked it out because it was close to the Renaissance Hotel and was probably my favorite meal of my trip in Amsterdam. Even the appetizer bread and butter tasted better than normal. For seafood, try the oysters (bigger and super juicy) or the Dutch sole. For dessert, cheesecake is a must! Onion soup should have a beefy rich broth with a bit of vino....this was not rich, no vino, and it was slightly thickened with corn starch or something similar, giving it a glutinous consistency ....yuck! Sent it back and ordered pea soup.....it was fine but pea soup is pea soup! But, the dark bread was great! Rack of lamb was good quality but lacked much if any seasoning. Sauce? I was here for a business dinner with a large group. Overall the food was at least average, maybe even good, but the service was the Achilles' heel. Although they were polite and friendly, it was very very slow. Commonly we would be sitting with empty glasses of wine while The waitstaff could be seen standing and chatting amongst themselves. It took forever to get the food. The atmosphere however was warm and inviting and even intimate. High roof ceiling with wooden beams and brick walls and intimate lighting made for a very pleasant experience. I might try it again if I am close on my next trip, but I would not recommend a large group business meal here. read more

Great ambience inside an old brick building with beautiful chandeliers. Now the food...i was recommended the rack of lamb and it did not disappoint. It came with these baby broccolis that I've never seen before with potatoes and a few blue chips that all complimented the dish. The standout was the lamb cooked to perfection with a side of bone marrow paste? Not sure what was in it but it was delicious. It was the perfect compliment to the lamb.
