We had a great meal here! Felt a bit rushed by the waitress but still enjoyed it at our own pace. The creamy mustard soup was surprisingly outstanding and the building is amazing.

It's not often that I get to dine in a living museum. The Rembrandt and other artwork and etchings transported me into what I imagined Amsterdam was in its heyday. Worth the prix fixe and wine pairing. They don't reveal the menu in advance but present each course in a wonderful choreography. The dishes were well prepared and they did a good job complementing them with the wine and each other. I happened to be dining alone that evening and lacked any urge to glare at my phone. That says a lot for me!

I wandered randomly to this voice tonight and enjoyed one of the best meals of my life . The rooms are beautiful and atmospheric / like eating in a Rembrandt painting . I had the chefs 4 course tasting menu and it was fantastic . The main was duck breast that was to die for . Wine pairings were excellent and the service was polite and efficient . I never felt rushed at all and the place was quite busy . Loved it !

I have eaten here 4 times and it is consistently an incredible dining experience. The ambience is mind-blowing and the food is out of this world. The waitstaff and service can be a little slow, but take some patience with you and enjoy one of the best meals you'll ever have!

One of my favorites this trip, definitely a must-save! We wanted to try an authentic dutch restaurant and walked by this hidden spot downtown. Once we walked in, it was like we stepped into a time machine Built in the 1600s with original leather, delft blue tiles, & Amsterdam maps visited by many famous people including Walt Disney, Givenchy... Huge autograph book since 1950s, find the original Alice in Wonderland drawings! Uses locally sourced seasonal produce a bit of French - trained chefs , to elevate dutch food beyond meat & potatoes Incredible service , thoughtfulness & care 4 course meal for €49 that includes chefs specials that are NOT on the alla carte menu - celery root - flat iron steak - cauliflower soup - sweet & sour jus dessert from a local Amsterdam candy Sourdough bread with salted butter €5.5 Veal pastrami €17 roasted Farm raised chicken €27 panna cotta in a shape of a clog on a historical blue tile €13.5 Selection of cheese €15.5 Everything was absolutely delicious!! Highly recommend their tasting course . The interiors are beautiful, yes. Everything else was below what I expected when paying the prices that are charged. The time between starters and mains was exceptionally long (we were yawning). The food tasted average (one might argue that that is Dutch food- but not when you are paying a lot more). The service was very average, drink orders were forgotten and an order of sides was forgotten. In my honest opinion, I would not recommend this restaurant based on the food and service. I find it strange that the restaurant has an average rating of 4.5 stars. I hope for others that they don't have the same experience we had.

Could not find one knock against this place. It is such a special place with a storied history, warm & cozy atmosphere and tasty food. Half my party got the chef's menu, while I opted for a La carte catch of the day. I should've ordered an appetizer or two so I didn't sit awkwardly watching them eat. I nibbled on bread and toasted lentils which were little bites of salty joy. Wines and beers were lovely. Everything was great. Our server gave us a hard time for being Americans nerding out and taking photos but had a great sense of humor about it. He was knowledgeable of the food, the wine, the restaurant. We must've warmed him over by the end of the night because he brought us after dinner shots of something like advocaat. Can't wait to return to Amsterdam, and will happily spend another evening here.

5 Stars for the culinary experience that is "Five Flies." This place came at the recommendation of a local when we asked about someplace Dutch for dinner. We did not have a reservation and were only seated because there was a cancellation, so keep that in mind for planning purposes! Opted for the full experience and got the six course menu with wine pairings. The restaurant is a gem, with history galore! We marveled at the woodwork throughout and after our meal we could not help ourselves from exploring the top two additional floors and take several more pictures. The staff know that the place is special and encouraged us to explore which was nice. The service was wonderful and friendly. We enjoyed each course (some more than others) but overall we definitely said that we would remember this meal for the rest of our lives as it was a splurge to our otherwise relatively uncultured epicurean desires. As we discussed at the table some of the courses we would never consider ordering so that made the adventure that that much more interesting. Very happy that someone cancelled so we could have a story to tell about a meal we ate in Amsterdam!

d'Vijff Vlieghen's venerable Herring Tartare - a reasonant note from street food herring.

Booked d'Vijff Vlieghen ('Five Flies') based on tourist sites that pointed out its 'art rooms' - recalling Amsterdam's Golden Age and Rembrandt's influence on its culture. A self-proclaimed 'culinary museum' intrigued us enough, along with solid ratings, to make it a must-try. We love culture, art, and food - so color us intrigued. The also hail using only seasonal Dutch ingredients only - which is exactly what we looked for forward to. Now, for a bit of palate context, Amsterdam is a cacophony of tourist spots with very touristy and, very novelty, options. When you get your fill of those, you will crave a rescue from that fate. It doesn't take more than a few pieces of fried food when you'll want that taste and bit of history of the storied city of Amsterdam. With about 23 (as of writing) Michelin-starred restaurants within Amsterdam, there are many options for fine dining. The restaurant was built across five canal houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. Each of their dining 'rooms', constituted by the different houses, is decorated in different styles and eras. All have the fingerprints and panache of Nicolaas Kroese - born in 1905 - and quite the personality of mid-century Amsterdam. The website does a great job of walking through its history - https://www.vijffvlieghen.nl/en/about-us The menu is divided between a prix-fixe chef's menu (4, 5, or 6 courses) or a la carte. As usual, we like to try both - have one of our party try out the chef's menu, while another gets an appetizer and an entree dish apart from the other. We started with a crisp, sparkling Dutch red wine with sweet berry notes throughout. Our starter was a fresh, mixed herring tartare. It was tossed in the slightest of oils - then adorned with pickled radishes, samphire, and tarragon. Delicious! It tasted of the Dutch seas - in a decidedly unrefined touch. While sitting in the decor of the Knight's Room - it recalled to mind a rough herring salad of hundreds of years ago. Bread and fresh butter were served alongside marcona nuts. The chef's menu's first course was a beetroot salad with prepared apples, nuts, a light pesto, and a foam that we simply could not figure out. (We asked twice, but my ears could not pick it up.) Refer to the photo to see if you could discern it - but this was the surprise of the evening. It was Dutch seasonal vegetables, prepared lightly warmed, moist, and interwoven with several different textures and flavors. The foam added an umami oiliness to the whole thing. It was quite the break from the norm - it harkened of Dutch summer fruits and vegetables - apples, endives, celery, beetroot.... Next was a freshly poured seafood bisque - thick and gravy-like - poured over a selection of Dutch shrimp and crab. It was hearty, with deep, flavorful notes throughout. For the main - we asked the server to help us decide between the entrées - to make sure we alternated them well. He suggested going for the Duck Breast versus the Sea Bream. Both were prepared excellently. The duck was served in a rich roux with seasonal accents, cooked to soft perfection. The bream was pan-fried well, still tender and moist - loaded with broccoli, a flavorful roux surrounded the flavorful bulgar. For dessert, we alternated again - opting for the cheese option with the four-course chef's menu. For the sweet, we had the Dutch Advocaat - a filling mixture of stroopwafel, alcohol panna cotta, and topped with fruit and ice cream. It was probably the highlight of sweets for the trip. As for the cheese - we found it so interesting that the Dutch serve cheese 'as is' - where we may expect a selection of bread, they serve the cheese alongside marcona nuts and two preserves (fig and currants). These cheeses came with a selection list (hurrah!) - Witte van Koning, Oudwijker Stella, Rouvener Extra Extra Oud, and Oudwijker Lazuli. Our favorites were the first and the fourth - the more profound, aged notes suited us well for the end of the meal. Of course, you must take turns in your party to wander around after you're done. Kroese's spirit can still be felt in all the warm touches and smiling faces - that was the delight. Even if you may not go in to eat, peek through the windows and see the delight on the customer's faces! You may see varying ratings for d'Vijff, but our experience was lovely. We had to make reservations, so that is a must - they will also charge 15 Euro per person. On entering, our servers were warm, friendly, and accommodating throughout. The food was served when it was ready, meaning don't expect it to come out right away -this was fine with us because the quality was there. We recommend their selection of wines; they paired well throughout the meal. We were able to get seated right on the window area. We chose menu 5, which was just enough for two people. Everything was delicious! Their pea soup is out of this world. Don't know why as it is a simple dish but wow! I also love their herring. It was so delicious that I wanted seconds. It paired so well with their onions and mustard. And their bitterballen was just enough bite. Creamy and crispy! We also got a combination of the hutspot. They were all delicious! Although for me the meatball was just a tad bit salty but it is probably just me! Everything else was spot on. I love their dessert at the end. It was a great way to end the night. We did not have one but they were happy to seat the 2 of us and invited us to switch tables once another couple left (they were checking out). Small space, can accommodate groups of 2-4, cozy atmosphere, lots of the traditional blue and white ceramics on the wall (dishes and tiles). Traditional Dutch cuisine: we ordered the Boerenkoolstamppot with smoked sausage and Zuurkoolstamppot with smoked sausage and a slice of apple pie to share for dessert. The food arrived piping hot in about 20 minutes. It was sooo delicious--the tasty juicy sausage pairs perfectly the mashed potatoes with either sauerkraut or kale. The apple pie was also tasty--larger chunks of apple and more spices less sugar than American apple pie from what I can tell. Perfect with whipped cream. A must visit if you're in Amsterdam and want to try traditional fare. Highly recommended!
