What?? - rock hard bread I wouldn't feed a dog and plastic container butter - lackluster oysters - steak frites came out just about raw (1.5 hours after ordering). Had to send back. Came back with no sauce on top, no mayo for fries - red bass decent - server/waiter said it "wasn't his fault" and "the system didn't take our order". No empathy, no anything. - the most appalling part. Offered us a free drink or a coffee. WHAT?? Didn't comp the martinis, didn't comp the awful steak frites, or anything. If you want the classic Amsterdam-chic "see and be seen" vibe, Café George is a must. The Leidsegracht location is really fun and popular. This place is buzzing. It's high-energy, crowded (in a fun way), and the people-watching is 10/10. It feels like a lively mix of Paris and New York in the heart of the canals. Great for a group lunch. Service is professional and fast-paced to keep up with the crowd. The food (like the Steak Frites) is consistently solid, but you are definitely here for the energetic atmosphere and the perfect location. I am not one to write a bad review but this was quite ridiculous. At first everything was great, we came in, sat down, and asked about the gluten free options, we were told everything and our waiter took our orders right away. We were offered gf bread and received that. 40 minutes went by and our food was nowhere to be found and people coming in after us were getting served, we asked a waitress what the status was and she wasn't sure so she asked and came back apologizing that there was a problem with one of the dishes and it was coming out as soon as possible. we said we completely understood and waited. our food came out 15 minutes later and it was the wrong order, they took it back immediately and apologized again. after it passed an hour we asked again and another waiter apologized to us very sincerely and told us he would ask his boss to make sure we wouldn't have to pay for everything at the end of the service. about 20 minutes later (almost 1.5 hours now) the food came out. at this point we were close to leaving and could have eaten anything. the food itself was good but not worth all of the conundrum it caused. after we finished, our original waiter asked us if we wanted dessert on the house but we weren't going to sit there any longer and we just wanted to leave. he came back with the full bill with no discounts, except he offered us a free glass of champagne next time we visit (we won't be). the bill had the wrong order on it, and we asked to change it to the right order and if we were going to get any sort of discount for the service like we were told, he said no and that the free champagne was the discount. we were too exhausted to argue, we ended up paying the full bill even after waiting almost 2 hours for food and being told we wouldn't have to. overall, ridiculous experience and we could've at least been offered free bread but we were charged for that too. read more

Very nice dining room, however we sat at a sweet table outside. Our server was very nice and efficient. We both had a terrible chicken club, wow so disappointing. Cold tasteless sliced deli Chicken served on cold dry white toast. We couldn't believe a $20. club wasn't grilled chicken or served on nice toasted bread. Our concierge was kind enough to suggest Cafe George and I am pleased to report that it was a fabulous suggestion! The staff is friendly and energetic, the restaurant is clean, bright, and comfortable, and the menu is perfect. Honestly, I wish we had found it earlier on our visit to Amsterdam. If I return here I will definitely book a table at Cafe George. I ordered a Croque Monsieur for dinner. Yes, I know...it isn't fancy, but that is my favorite sandwich and I can never find them in America. I also ordered a dirty martini and not only was it perfect, it came garnished with my absolute favorite olives, anchoa olives (anchovy stuffed olives from Spain). We were served a delicious fresh French baguette, Fleur de sel from France, and a mini can of anchoa olives. Okay, so we ate. I literally did not take photos of our food because I was so hungry and the food did not disappoint. My Croque Monsieur was delicious and my salad was crisp and fresh. If you're American, then be prepared...NO restaurant in Amsterdam is quick. Adjust to the culture. Things move WAY slower here, it's just the way it is. An empty glass doesn't mean bad. service, it is them leaving you alone to enjoy things at your pace. Ask for another drink if you want another one. no big deal... A hidden gem on a nice residential neighborhood in Amsterdam! It is located close to some tourist attractions but not close enough to be a trap. Very fast and excellent service despite being busy for Sunday brunch. The kroket is absolutely amazing! Pasta carbonara was very authentic and the deserts were all great. Excellent ambience. I was here during the fall, in mid-September and the weather was perfect for sitting outside and enjoying an excellent meal. Cute little restaurant for a small family or even a date. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. My family all said that they got really good food and I got the carbonara which was good but soo much peppery -- overwhelmingly so that I only took a few bites. If I could look back and change my Amsterdam trip, this would be the only change I made. The food was just okay: poke starter was good, the french onion soup was decent, but the croque madame was so greasy and nauseating I honestly couldn't even get halfway through it. The service was truly, honestly, terrible. I'm not usually a stickler, but I actually looked back at photo stamps to confirm I wasn't crazy. It took 40 minutes from ordering to get our starters, and another 52 minutes (!) for our main courses to arrive. The dishes also weren't cleared between courses, so our tiny table was cluttered with dirty dishes, and we had to move some things off the table and onto the booth seat to make room. Keep in mind: the place was not crowded, and I made consistent eye contact with (and waved to) our waitress, who did not respond. I had to approach the bar to ask for the check, and someone else came to help us out while our waitress was visibly scrolling on social media behind the bar. The place was okay, but definitely did not need to be 3 hours. read more

I adored Café George with its tile walls and mosaic floors in this cool, hip, NYC-style bistro which featured a modern twist on brasserie dishes. There are a few outdoor seats. I made reservations for lunch which where not necessary for a weekday but could be important at other times. I had the pizza tuna which I loved and I wanted to pair it with an arugula salad but the "vegetable man was late on his delivery" (perhaps due to the recent Kings Day) so I could have salad and I think some embellishments where missing from my meal but I enjoyed my lunch paired with a glass of Veuve. The Île Flottante was wonderful. I felt service was a little slow but the entire city seemed a little sleepy. This is an incredibly beautiful little cafe, on Leidsegracht. Wandered in one day for a late breakfast, and it was the perfect, elegant café for a late repast. First up, a cappuccino. Picture perfect, and absolutely delicious. Moved on to a ginger beer next. Frosty and perfect. What I ordered was probably my favorite thing that I ate in Amsterdam. Those that know me, know of my devotion to Reuben sandwiches, and my annoyance at deviation from the standard ingredients. This place earns a spot on my hallowed Yelp List of Reubens, as it was spot on. Leave it to the Dutch to create this American sandwich, as it was intended, and beat a number of American delis. The sandwich itself was the perfect size. Not large, overstuffed and vulgar, not stingy and dry. The ratio of ingredients was spot on, as well. I will return, hopefully soon. Everyone described Café George to me as a little bistro pulled right out of New York and dropped into Amsterdam. They're not too far off... at least as far as the pretension and prices go. Let's take a look at the bill: steak frites - €16.50 penne arabiata - €14 tarte tartin - €7.50 bottle of rioja - €36 I mean... exchange the currency symbol for $ and it's pretty much what you could expect from a place like Pastis or Balthazar, right? But at least the service there isn't European (read: virtually nonexistent). On the upside, you do get to dine with Dutch scenesters, the ambiance is dim and moody. It might actually be romantic except for the din. And the food was generally not bad, but certainly not worth writing home about, and -most- certainly not warranting of the price tags. I always have a good chuckle when I read reviews from tourists complaining about the poor service in Amsterdam and mentally add back stars to the ratings. Of course Cafe George is no exception to the rule. Even with a few people there, somehow the food is still exceptionally slow. While waiting I started to daydream that maybe when the food gets entered in the POS, a guy gets a notification at home, rolls out of bed, gets on his bike, buys ingredients and then makes his way to the restaurant. That said, with the lowest of expectations on timing, I can say I actually like this place! The interior is unique, dimly lit in the front with most of the natural light filtering through the greenhouse skylights in the back. It has a trendy New York - Parisian feel. It's definitely a place where fashionistas come, but not as stuffy as the location by Vondelpark. To cut to the chase on food, I almost never stray from the Eggs Norwegian and a side of fries. It's served on a brioche bun, and while a bit stiff, I like the juxtaposition with the rest so it's not all super mushy. The French toast is a good add-on if you're sharing -- I always want a bit of sweet to balance the savory. The salad Niçoise with fresh seared tuna looks amazing if you're looking for something healthier and heftier. All we ask now is if they can improve the speed and warmth of their service at all locations. read more

They had some odd canned olives on the table when we arrived (a whole sealed tin can) was on the table, but I noticed olives in the actual menu, so ordered them thinking it would be different. Nope... and not where on the menu they mention they are stuffed with anchovies . Also weird to have a giant grocery store salt delivered to table. Pasta was so so. Wow! I just celebrated my 70th birthday here tonight at Café George in Amsterdam. The evening was absolutely flawless. The food was superb, and the service was excellent. The decor of the restaurant is trendy and hip and makes you feel like you are in a swank French bistro on the Left Bank in Paris. Everyone speaks English (if you do). The blackened tuna is incredible, as is the lamb and beef Bourguignon. The skinny little French fries are delicious with mayonnaise, as the Dutch eat them. The dessert of Crêpe Suzette is awesome. I can barely remember when I've had such a perfect evening. And the staff was so pleasant and helpful- very caring, and quite accessible. I highly recommend this restaurant. It's a very romantic place-- perfect lighting-- you can still read the menu, but it feels warm and cozy. We really had just a great meal and a great time. The couple next to us from New Zealand felt the same way about their meal and their service. It was nearly a magical night for us :-) By the way-- almost embarrassed to mention about such a fine restaurant-- but, yes, there is free Wi-Fi, which we definitely made use of. read more

Stopped here for afternoon coffee and to make our evening plans. This is a chic cafe in the city a few miles from the oldest part of the city (the red light district). Our server was super friendly and greeted us when we arrived. We sat down and ordered a pair of lattes, which were hot and tasty. There is free Internet and the cafe was filled with the sound of motown type tunes, which earned an A+ in my book. The entire look and feel of this cafe was perfect. We sat for a while, sipped our drinks, and plotted the rest of our evening. The server noticed what were doing, shared a few tips, and gave us a hard coated plastic map of the area that someone had left behind. If I make my way back to Amsterdam, I'd definitely include this as a redux. Love this place! read more

Very cute cafe centrally located on Leidsegracht in Amsterdam. We chose to sit outside and had a lovely first meal in the city. My husband had the steak frites while I had the beet root, chicken,and goat cheese salad. The steak was prepared perfectly to medium temperature and was well seasoned needing no other seasonings (including pepper) to augment the flavor. The frites were crisp, hot, and had a delicious seasoned mayonnaise accompanying them. The salad I had was wonderful! Lots of creamy goat cheese, lots of beets and the roots, and filled plentifully with chicken. The dressing, which I had on the side, was a fruity vinaigrette that complimented all of the flavors. I also had a glass of white wine which paired well with my meal. My husband enjoyed his coffee. Our server was sweet and attentive. The atmosphere sitting outside is cozy and great for people watching. I'd definitely return in the future and I'd recommend dining here to anyone visiting Amsterdam too! read more

I can't review the food/drinks at this place - or upload any photos because WE WERE NEVER SERVED. I've been replaying this restaurant experience over and over in my mind for the past few days to see where we went wrong and to find an explanation for why we were treated the way that we were. Context: Wednesday ~3:30 pm. My friend and I entered Cafe George upon recommendation from my Dutch friend. There was only one other party in the restaurant (a party of 2). We were told to take a seat. My friend asked whether it's okay for us to sit in the back. The server said that the back is "reserved" and to sit in the front. So, we did -- no problem. We sit down and the following occurs: Server: "What would you like to drink?" Us: "Can we take a look at your drinks menu please?" Server: Walks away and brings us back food menus Me: Walk up to the bar and ask, "Can we take a look your drinks menu?" Bartender: "We only serve wine" [They had a fully stocked bar] Me: Sit back down and look through their food menu ...three more parties enter and the server hands them all menus and takes their orders Us: Trying to catch the server's attention, with no luck ...some time passes and we realize we're never getting to order food (and apparently, they don't serve anything but wine despite a huge, fully stocked bar). So, we walked out. I don't know what to attribute this to, but I do have one thing to say with certainty: Do not call yourself "The pro­ver­bial French-brasserie-in-New-York... But then in Amsterdam" if you're not going to deliver NYC service. Excuse me, ANY service. We're both from NYC. You're not fooling anyone. read more
