My only regret is that we were so loopy (our first night in Amsterdam) we forgot to bring cash for tips for the wonderful staff. For you Americans who are wondering what to do... 10% in cash left on the table after the meal is probably fine. They don't typically offer you the opportunity to add your tip to the credit card total.. So to MOS Amsterdam- mea culpa, mea culpa...
But to make up I can offer this- the food we had here was THE BEST MEAL we've had since dining at State Bird Provisions in San Francisco several years ago. Don't get me wrong, we've had absolutely wonderful meals in all the places we've been (and of course we live in the food mecca that is Manhattan) but MOS Amsterdam could easily best the finest, fine dining, Michelin-starred, highly heralded "institution" in NYC any day of the week (and three times on Sunday).
To wit...the sheer audacity of the flavor combinations kept us guessing all night long. Every aspect of every dish (we had the tasting menu) was its own masterpiece. You could take what looked like a minor part of your dish, taste it on its own, and be totally blown away.
I feel like I should leave you in suspense so you can taste it for yourself if you happen to be in Amsterdam (check out the pictures ;). But I think I'll leave you with this- I'm not a mackerel fan, or a pistachio fan (actually don't like pistachio on its own), or raw fish fan really AT ALL... but I ate all three in one dish on one plate... and it took every aspect of my being to keep myself from licking that plate.
If I had one complaint--- why do you have a bar if you don't have a bartender??? But enjoyed my G&T's just the same.
Why this place is not on everyone's "Best of..." list I have no clue... try it and let me know if you disagree. read more
