My frustration has nothing to do with the quality of the work or even necessarily the $250 price. It's about how the entire situation was handled. One of the reasons I contacted this company was because they advertise a free estimate. To me, that means someone comes out, looks at the issue, tells me what it will cost, and then I have the opportunity to decide whether I want to authorize the work. That did not happen. The technician came in, asked what was going on, grabbed our own plunger, and started working on the toilet. Within a short time, he got the clog loose. At no point beforehand was I told, "This service will be $250. Would you like me to proceed?" I wasn't given an estimate, I didn't sign anything authorizing the work, and I wasn't told what I would be charged until after the work had already been done. Had he simply said, "I'm going to try plunging it, and if that clears it, the charge will be $250. Is that okay?" then I could have made that decision myself. If I agreed, then absolutely, charge me the $250. That's not the issue. The issue is advertising a free estimate and then beginning billable work before actually providing that estimate or getting approval from the customer. Once the work is already completed, the customer really doesn't have a choice anymore. I specifically chose this company because I got the impression they cared about taking care of people and weren't going to treat every interaction as just another transaction. Unfortunately, that isn't how this experience felt. Again, I appreciate that the toilet was fixed, and the technician did accomplish what we needed. I just wish there had been more transparency, communication, and consideration before the work was performed. A simple explanation of the cost and asking for my authorization beforehand would have made this an entirely different review.

However they charged an extra $400 for a permit and pipe modifications which are not covered by my policy. I am a contractor myself and the plumbing contractors I normally use ido better work for the money and would have brought the installation up to current code and installed an expansion tank to the water line. But they did not install the expansion tank. They charged an extra $400 for two flex hoses which should have been part of a normal water heater install. I did not think the inspection would pass but they must have the City of Columbus Inspector in their pocket because their mediocre installation passed. I felt ripped off. I will have to hire my usual plumber to correct this install as they were unwilling to do anything to address my concerns. See what they installed versus what I was expecting and used to.

The next day he arrives, takes out the old water heater, and, unbelievably, refuses to use a dolly, insisting he can just slide it across my wood floors. He damaged my floors, apologized, and left me scrambling to protect them with rugs and towels. Then came the kicker: the new water heater was too big for the space. He hadn't measured anything, hadn't paid attention to the size of the previous heater...nothing. He suggested I just leave the closet door open. I informed him that was unacceptable as I have dogs and grandchildren! He actually was mad at me!!!! I even asked him, "are you pissed?". He tried to deny what was clearly written across his face. When he returned with another "solution," it was still too big. His response? "Oh well, that's the only one we have. Maybe we can investigate. No one makes tanks this small anymore." Then he left. I couldn't believe it! It's getting dark now, I was left crying, without hot water, and with no options. To make matters worse, he tried to take my old heater, which was sitting in front of my house, as he left. I was alone, distraught, and abandoned by a company that clearly didn't care. Thankfully, ECO Plumbers came to the rescue that same night. They not only installed a properly sized (29 gallon) water heater from the same brand (Bradford White) Gunther claimed didn't exist, they did it at a better price, AND actually made me feel valued as a customer. They were professional, placed vinyl down to protect my floors, wore foot covers, tested things 3 times or more, left a complimentary carbon monoxide detector, and most importantly treated me and my home with respect. Gunther Plumbing caused stress, damaged my floors, and left me helpless. I would never, ever trust them again, and I cannot believe the glowing 5-star reviews. At around 8 AM, we were told that one would be dispatched soon, and would call to let us know when he was arriving. As we battled the water spreading over our kitchen floor, we couldn't wait for the plumber. We kept the phone in hand and even watched the road, but no one called or arrived. After 4 hours, we called them again, and they said they were very busy but one of their techs would soon contact us. After 7 hours, we called again to say their business hours would be over soon, but no one had contacted us. The receptionist (Felicia?) said she would send Travis out immediately. But he never came, and we were never contacted. Original person was not responsive. A friend recommended G&M. He discovered that he installed the gasket away from the drain instead of at the joint, and that's why it was leaking. He also discovered a small leak at the drain on the other side of the sink and fixed that. Finally, he installed new kitchen fixtures that I supplied. But I didn't even need a drywaller and was able to patch it myself. He did suggest just putting in a $10 access panel but we really didn't like the look of those. Now my downstairs shower is leaking but luckily it's an unfinished basement with easy access and a clearly visible problem. If I can't fix it I know who I'll be calling!
