My frustration has nothing to do with the quality of the work or even necessarily the $250 price. It's about how the entire situation was handled. One of the reasons I contacted this company was because they advertise a free estimate. To me, that means someone comes out, looks at the issue, tells me what it will cost, and then I have the opportunity to decide whether I want to authorize the work. That did not happen. The technician came in, asked what was going on, grabbed our own plunger, and started working on the toilet. Within a short time, he got the clog loose. At no point beforehand was I told, "This service will be $250. Would you like me to proceed?" I wasn't given an estimate, I didn't sign anything authorizing the work, and I wasn't told what I would be charged until after the work had already been done. Had he simply said, "I'm going to try plunging it, and if that clears it, the charge will be $250. Is that okay?" then I could have made that decision myself. If I agreed, then absolutely, charge me the $250. That's not the issue. The issue is advertising a free estimate and then beginning billable work before actually providing that estimate or getting approval from the customer. Once the work is already completed, the customer really doesn't have a choice anymore. I specifically chose this company because I got the impression they cared about taking care of people and weren't going to treat every interaction as just another transaction. Unfortunately, that isn't how this experience felt. Again, I appreciate that the toilet was fixed, and the technician did accomplish what we needed. I just wish there had been more transparency, communication, and consideration before the work was performed. A simple explanation of the cost and asking for my authorization beforehand would have made this an entirely different review.

Original person was not responsive. A friend recommended G&M. He discovered that he installed the gasket away from the drain instead of at the joint, and that's why it was leaking. He also discovered a small leak at the drain on the other side of the sink and fixed that. Finally, he installed new kitchen fixtures that I supplied. However they charged an extra $400 for a permit and pipe modifications which are not covered by my policy. I am a contractor myself and the plumbing contractors I normally use ido better work for the money and would have brought the installation up to current code and installed an expansion tank to the water line. But they did not install the expansion tank. They charged an extra $400 for two flex hoses which should have been part of a normal water heater install. I did not think the inspection would pass but they must have the City of Columbus Inspector in their pocket because their mediocre installation passed. I felt ripped off. I will have to hire my usual plumber to correct this install as they were unwilling to do anything to address my concerns. See what they installed versus what I was expecting and used to.

Declined to fix the line when a quote was requested claiming he didn't have a hitch post on his truck to tow an excavator to reconnect it. (Sewer coupling was about 12" below grade) and his truck with the hitch was acting up. Didn't have a recommendation for another service to solve the problem when asked for referral. Not prepared to provide anything more than the most basic service on this $75.00 call.

I informed him that was unacceptable as I have dogs and grandchildren! He actually was mad at me!!!! I even asked him, "are you pissed?". He tried to deny what was clearly written across his face. When he returned with another "solution," it was still too big. His response? "Oh well, that's the only one we have. Maybe we can investigate. No one makes tanks this small anymore." Then he left. I couldn't believe it! It's getting dark now, I was left crying, without hot water, and with no options. To make matters worse, he tried to take my old heater, which was sitting in front of my house, as he left. I was alone, distraught, and abandoned by a company that clearly didn't care. Thankfully, ECO Plumbers came to the rescue that same night. They not only installed a properly sized (29 gallon) water heater from the same brand (Bradford White) Gunther claimed didn't exist, they did it at a better price, AND actually made me feel valued as a customer. They were professional, placed vinyl down to protect my floors, wore foot covers, tested things 3 times or more, left a complimentary carbon monoxide detector, and most importantly treated me and my home with respect. As we battled the water spreading over our kitchen floor, we couldn't wait for the plumber. We kept the phone in hand and even watched the road, but no one called or arrived. After 4 hours, we called them again, and they said they were very busy but one of their techs would soon contact us. After 7 hours, we called again to say their business hours would be over soon, but no one had contacted us. The receptionist (Felicia?) said she would send Travis out immediately. But he never came, and we were never contacted. Nearly all my reviews of other companies have been glowingly full of praise and a pat on the back, but Gunther Plumbing/ housecallpro.com is one of the worst companies we have ever contacted. The technician arrived, and my husband showed him our laundry room with our water heater and electric panel and explained what was happening and concern about a sizzle sound after the breaker tripped most recently. The technician did not inspect the water heater, only glancing over and saying it "looks new." He went over to the electric panel and began confirming our fears that what my husband described was a safety concern. He went outside for approximately 5 minutes to look at our outside electric box. He suggested we get it fixed because it's not flush against the house but focused on claims that it would be best to replace our electric panel because it is worn out and a fire hazard. He claimed the reason it was a fire hazard was due to breakers that had been replaced. He repeatedly expressed concerns for our safety and continued to look over at the breakers and claimed he could tell they would fail soon. In under 30 minutes he gave my husband an estimate with options for replacing the main panel for approximately $5,000 or approximately $7,000 to replace the entire electrical panel. My husband and I talked and agreed since the technician was so adamant our existing panel was a fire hazard and claimed we are in danger, we agreed to the full panel replacement. I was handed a tablet to complete a financing application. Nothing about the financing was explained and I had no idea if it's a loan or line of credit. I do know I would be paying for 7 years at 13% interest. While I was completing the financing process, the technician was extremely talkative and joked with my husband about sports. He scheduled an appointment for the following week. He again claimed our existing panel was a fire hazard and that he was glad he was going to help keep us safe by replacing it. After he left, I had a bad feeling. He never said anything about the water heater, which was the whole reason for the visit. Combined with the short inspection, never explaining what made him decide the breaker box was dangerous, the high cost estimate, the invoice that doesn't include a breakdown of material vs labor, or any description of the work to be done, and the incessant overly friendly talking. It began to hit me how many hard sell tactics were used during the short visit. I decided to talk to a family member who said I should get a second opinion and that there's no way any of what the technician said was true. He suggested an electrician who came out the next morning. The electrician quickly found the real issue, which was a loose screw! He told us that nothing was wrong with our electrical panel and that he turned his screw driver 5 times before he could hear the hot water heater come back on. He did not charge us for the visit. He also informed us that Safe Electric and Plumbing has a reputation for unnecessary overly expensive work. I called to cancel with Safe and received unclear answers from their both their AI and weekend answering service about the status of the loan through their lender. I was eventually told to call the finance department next week. I also went back and looked more closely at their reviews and was horrified to see how many of both the positive and negative reviews described similar experiences. This includes many of the positive reviews reporting "electric panel replacement or upgrade" after hiring this company for unrelated work and the negative reviews who also experienced hard sell scare tactics. I'm feeling upset and manipulated. We came so close to paying over $7,000 plus 13% interest for 7 years for a loose screw. After several calls, I did at least get confirmation that the loan would not move forward without any work being done. I cannot adequately put into words how sickened I am by the realization that this business we trusted to come into our home engages in tactics to take advantage of unsuspecting customers. Please beware.
