My Samsung phone got tossed around in the washing machine for 20min til i realized where it was. Tried all youtube suggestions, but It was a goner, with 2000 pictures/videos of trips, kids, etc. (Long story re: backup issues.) Opened the back along with one layer of the works, then stopped. We thought we would need to replace our 4- and 8-year old HP Envy laptops this week. But we took them to Jack at jL Computer Services to see if he could help us. We knew the batteries were dead and had tried last year to replace them but they are no longer available from HP. Even plugged in, they were not running well. Jack thought they would need new batteries and maybe a new solid state hard drive to replace a mechanical one in the older laptop, for which the total cost estimate was $400. Two days later diagnosis and repair completed: Only needed the two (off-market) batteries and some OS software clean-up. Total cost was $300. After spending close to 7 hours with Microsoft W11 support working on fixing multiple Blue Screen of Death failures on my 2 year old Lenovo Flex5 14ALC05 (you do not want to own this model), I brought the machine to Jack to help me with a fresh install of W11. As always, Jack was very helpful and responsive. After multiple software fix attempts including setting up some BIOS options for "Secure Boot" and "TMP2.0", Jack diagnosed the problems with the laptop as multiple hardware failures including, but not limited to, the mother board due to excessive heat from its AMD processor which showed the machine running at 80 Centigrade on start-up idle. Jack's current diagnosis coupled with the fact that the machine had already had a mother board replacement from Lenovo in the first 3 months in service less than 2 years ago helped Jack write things up so that I was able to present them to Allstate/SquareTrade for a full refund for the price paid, albeit with some haggling with the processing agent. We wanted to install bigger RAM for our son's laptop. It should be a simple task for us to do; however, we could not get one of the screws out because of the broken stand-off. We took the laptop to Jack. He is super friendly and quickly came to rescue. He took off back cover very quickly - so fast that I didn't get the chance to see how he handled the broken stand-off that gave us troubles. Within 10 minutes, our RAMs are upgraded and the charge is very reasonable. We are so happy. Jack and Allan are always our go to guys when we can't fix something by ourselves!! I tried to replace the battery on my laptop and ended up making problems worse. These laptops are much smaller and more fragile than they used to make them! I brought the laptop over to jack, and my shameful zip lock bag of broken plastic connectors expecting bad news. Jack got right to work disassembling the laptop (taking ALL the screws out and not breaking anything like I did), finding the three ribbons that got disconnected, and had me back up and running within 30 minutes of walking in the door. First, they lied and said they never carried that brand. But I persisted and they finally agreed that I had bought it from them and they had configured it. if you're reading reviews and trying to decide where to take your laptop, don't waste any more time! I had a 9 yr old computer w many pics and files I wanted to keep, but the machine was beyond slow. A friend suggested I get a few new drives and he would help me, but his intentions were better than his guidance. Jack cleaned up the whole mess, went above and beyond what was expected in servicing the laptop (HP Envy). The was a slight miscommunication (99% most likely on my end), but he and Alan were extremely gracious, and Jack gave me a break on the correct component that I needed. My laptop is now 7 years old. About 6 months ago Jack replaced my keyboard, it looked new! Last week my laptop went back to him for an SSD hard drive and a new fan (my fan got noisy). JL Computer Services is one of those little neighborhood gems that you wish you knew before going to Best Buy. Tucked in an office park in Gaithersburg, Maryland, it is a modest establishment without all the expensive trimmings that you pay extra for in larger fancier places. The owner Jack Liu is an IT professional specializing in repairs, however he will order or build new computers if that's what you need. We used to take our computers for years to Jack who worked at The Computer Place for repairs. When they closed down, Jack opened up his own shop. Jack is always honest with very fair prices, lower than any other. And what a fantastic job he does! He's always accessible by phone too, no playing phone tag. Today I brought my new computer and old computer in. The hard drive just needed to be switched from the old to new. I didn't know that! I mean I knew the hard drive had to be switched but in my ignorance I thought Office had to be reinstalled in the new one. I know, I know, stupid, right? Jack didn't charge me for the switchover and he was honest telling me that Office would automatically transfer to the new computer. I would have been easy prey for someone who was less honest. While I was there I overheard him patiently explaining and instructing a very senior lady how to perform an apparently simple task on her computer. He solved her problem and she left smiling.
