We visited Tonga Hut during their recent "Spring Time Schenanigans" tiki marketplace event. They…read morehave a tiki marketplace several times a year, and this one was held on a Sunday afternoon from noon to 6pm. It takes place mostly in their rear patio area and parking lot, but a good number of vendors were also in an adjacent air conditioned event room. They have a very small parking lot, but it was occupied by vendors during this event. Do not park in the parking lots of the adjacent businesses, as we were warned when entering the Tonga Hut that cars get towed regularly. There's plenty of street parking in the nearby neighborhood. Entering from the rear, there is a good sized covered patio with around eight benches. We went inside to check it out and grab a drink. The interior is fairly small with four good sized booths, a lounge area with a large J-shaped couch with several small tables, and around ten seats at the bar. It is dimly lit with some basic tiki décor, and has an old-school feel. They had a fixed cocktail menu for this event which is understandable. We stood in line at the bar for about ten minutes, got our drinks and went out to the patio. The bartender was friendly, and didn't seem flustered by the high volume of patrons. I had the Horned Beast O' The Celtic Sea (Oceanus Hibernicus Irish Malt, Jamacian Rum, House Made Falernum & Orgeat, Peach, Citrus, Dash of Cherry Heering, $13). She had the Leprechaun Grog (Three Rums, Lime, Grapefruit, Honey, Spice, Soda, $14). Both drinks were good, were served in souvenir plastic cups, and were a bargain at $13 to $14. If you ordered a drink containing Oceanus whiskey, the bartender gave you a gold coin and you could exchange it with the Oceanus representative on the patio for a free T-shirt. Durango Tacos was setup near the rear entrance for food. We had four tacos (two carne asada and two veggie), and they were good and reasonably priced. This was the first tiki marketplace we have attended. There were around twenty vendors with a good assortment of art work, tiki mugs, tiki clothing, tiki décor, and other miscellaneous items. I purchased a few nice tiki shirts which were a steal at $20 and $25. The vendors and visitors were all very friendly and in a festive mood. We hung out for about ninety minutes and had a good time. We will return at some point to try their regular cocktail menu and see what it's like on a non-event night.

Tonga hut is my favorite local tiki bar, but it is such a hit or miss when I go!…read more On a weekend, you could easily walk in with no problem or be hit with a one-hour wait. Sometimes they have servers, other times you order at the bar. The last time I went, there was a long line as only one bartender was making drinks, yikes! Despite that, the drinks are solid, reasonably priced, and strong! They have a variety of drinks and nightly specials. Each bartender also has their own "secret menu" specials that only they can make. The decor is very on theme, and they have a fire pit and heaters outside for when it is chilly.

Upon reaching the typical age one enters when finally gaining the ability to drive; I think like most Californians, we all inevitably can recall a moment in time taking a cruise along Pacific Coast Highway. Depending on what you are looking for, going south bound on PCH leads into the more cleaner and elevated sights, sounds, and locations that is for sure a particular atmosphere for a specific demographic. On the flip side, going North is a unique contrast that offers a completely different experience compared to the South all the way towards Long Beach with Palos Verdes and the Palos Verdes Estate being that upper echelon checkpoint. Among the various beach cities you will find going South, the incorporated Mini City of Sunset Beach, which is similar in size to say Midway City, you may or may not encounter the dive bar known as Turcs. It is a rather small establishment that can understandably be missable due to its size, but unlike the modern cookie cutter building designs being made as a constant change in Orange County this building stands out with its eye catching exterior design. I took the leap finally going to the place since every time I drove past it, I would always imagine what the inside looked like. Safe to say the drapes match the curtains as the atmosphere is unique as it gets. I made the decision to venture in there during those hours where one should typically be at work on a weekday. Not sure what the vibes are like on weekends, but I'd like to believe that those off-beat hours ensures an experience and encounters you would never be able to have. The saying of "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" is applicable in that regard as the mighty "Romans" aka Locals of Sunset City will be the usual patrons during those times. I cannot vouch exactly on what to expect, but all I can say is that if you enter with an open mind and receptive heart, you will be welcomed with open arms as if you were family. It's an absolute gem with a long standing historical presence that has survived the test of time. A Christian Epstein, who is a prolific local historian of the area, like segment on establishments highlighting the culture and memories of the people for the people. Every story has its end, so come here to both live and add to it before it becomes too late.

It just has that log ride smell to it and not in a bad way. They have two pool tables and a juke box. The bar top isn't very big. There's only about 6 or 7 seats if I recall correctly. There is more seating where the pool tables are as well as a little patio.

I needed to leave the small confines of luxury apartment living and not only taste the fresh air but taste the last dying beats of a once wonderful city, where the star was not the blocks and blocks of homeless people who have been willfully ignored by the "brave leaders" of current day Gotham City. But, one must always try to lean toward optimism and avoid the bottomless pit of despair. So, on the bright side I was about a hundred feet from Hank's Bar. Familiar and comforting like a kind neighbor from a forgotten time.... the 80's or 90's. This neighbor was not always home when you knocked on their door. But when they were home they welcomed you with open arms, making you feel better and safer. Sometimes they even offered you food. Well Hank's and this "long-ago" neighbor are one and the same. Hank's isn't always open when you need them but when they are the drinks are stiff, the company is fascinating and oddly comforting. And if you're lucky there are hotdogs and popcorn available free of charge. Besides, we're neighbors and sometimes neighbors share. Stay positive and curious my friends....

There were some interesting characters day drinking, and it was great people-watching with lots of regulars. The interactions were priceless. The bartender asked a regular if he'd left his helmet, and when he showed it to him, the regular quipped, "My head is bigger." The helmet looked like a kid's size, and the guy did have a small head. It was a funny interaction in a room full of characters, like something out of "A Confederacy of Dunces."
