This…read morecompany was stellar throughout the whole process -- From the time we initially met with Jonathan at the home and garden show, to the planning/designing of the project and closeout with Jonathan and Pat, to meeting our PM Kevin and the various trades for the job, and to the welcoming and friendly Marrokal staff. These folks are definite pros and would recommend them to folks looking for home remodeling. Any questions and concerns we had before and during the project were answered and addressed promptly. We were kept apprised of any schedule changes and items that would have needed a change request was provided to us in a reasonable time. The quality of the work was great, and everyone involved in the remodel was courteous and professional, and to top it off the project was completed before the estimated date.

I contracted with Marrokal for an outdoor living area remodel. I am a business owner and have done…read moremany commercial buildouts with contractors. I have also done a number of home remodels as a 30 year homeowner. I am reasonable in my expectations on what to expect from construction and understand the challenges with construction. I know that not everything goes perfect and certain issues will happen on any construction project. However, the issues on this project were extensive and beyond reason. The subs they use are of very poor quality with poor oversight by Marrokal to ensure quality. Poor workmanship, poor quality control to address the workmanship, lack of integrity with contracted issues and all led to a poor overall experience and caused me to expend tremendous time and energy in order to achieve a good finished product and avoid being overcharged. Nearly every trade had significant issues with workmanship. The Concrete had a hump throughout the slab that required a week of grinding to allow tile installation and did not allow sufficient weep screed height. The Electrician had to cut out structural joists to install speakers because they cut two of the holes in the wrong place. The stucco had over 60 cracks throughout requiring elastomeric paint due to failure to use a crack isolation membrane which I learned should have been used for the matching smooth stucco finish. The framer did a poor job framing for the fireplace requiring modification. The fireplace installation was poorly done with insufficient vent height leading to 8 months of delay at project end to remedy the issue. Poor finish carpentry work was done by the project manager and should have been done by a finish carpenter. While this was primarily an exterior project, three windows were installed. The interior was left unfinished for a number of months to do simple molding and drywall work which was only 1-2 days of work and could have been done much sooner requiring us to have our kitchen and master bedroom a mess throughout the project. In addition to the workmanship and quality control issues there were major issues with the finance/contract issues on this project. My budget was not even close to adhered to in the planning phase with no transparency until an excessive price was given to me with no supporting detail or breakdown of how it was arrived at. After a lot of back and forth and once the contract was agreed to, there were multiple issues with attempts to charge me more despite a contracted price that covered those items. This included attempts to charge me more for electrical for heaters that was covered under the contract, attempts to charge more for deck pricing after we already signed a change order contract for deck changes, attempt to do chain link fence rather than stucco around back of deck despite renderings and contract/plans that showed a stucco wrapped deck. Ultimately, Marrokal agreed to resolve each of my requests as I was in the right but it took a lot of time, energy and debate with management to get to the result. We are extremely happy with the end result and they designed a nice layout but there was a lot of pain to get to completion.

If you want your project done the right way, not the sloppy way, then Sergio and his crew will absolutely deliver. SD Construction Works has done a variety of projects for me, for example, flooring, electrical, full bathroom remodel, installed doors, new fencing, patio cover, etc. I have been ecstatically pleased by the quality of their craftsmanship, intergrity and reasonable prices. I trust and appreciate Sergio's judgement so much that I often ask him for input before starting new projects as well as to fix work done by prior contractors. I have even waited for his schedule to open up instead for hiring someone else becuase the likely stress and fustration of dealing with another contractor, unlikely to be of the same caliber wasn't worth it for me. I sincerely appreciate that he likes to share his knowlege by clearing and thoroughly explaining each project with respect to options and possible complications. He's also extremely aware and proactive, for instance, Sergio will point out other issues beyond the scope of the project at hand. In short, if you want to keep the phrase "I regret hiring..." in your vocabulary hire another contractor, if not hire SD Construction Works. And you too will experience the novelty of contractors showing up on time.

Our project was to remodel/finish our very rough 1968 garage. Even though it seemed…read morestraightforward we wanted to hire a general contractor to save ourselves the complication of finding and hiring each individual trade. When the first general we interviewed pointed out all the complications and problems (there were a lot) and quoted us 12K not including the floor or cabinets we realized it was a bigger job than we realized. Thank goodness the next person we called was Sergio. Having been through two entire house remodels we have seen the good and the bad of contractors; our last general contractor was amazing but sadly retired a few years back. Sergio meets every single criteria we have for a top notch general contractor. - His work is very high quality and he can do it all; he's even a certified electrician - He's licensed and insured, which matters a lot to us - His prices are extremely reasonable, less than half of the first quote we received - He's super punctual and fantastic with communication, such a hard quality to find in contractors - He's a very dedicated and hard worker. On a Friday his helper didn't make it to work and one of our ancient water shutoff valves broke (not his fault). He stayed working at our house until after 7pm to complete the work he had promised for the week in addition to fixing the valve which wasn't even in his original scope of work. - There's no pressure to do work you don't want to have done. He's great about noticing little details and pointing out all your options, making sure you're happy with your final product, but it's totally up to you what to have done or what to skip. On top of everything else he came to the rescue when the epoxy floor specialist we hired flaked on us the morning they were supposed to come out and do the floor. He ended up doing the epoxy himself and it turned out great. The project was finished a few days ago and we couldn't be happier. Usually in my contractor Yelp reviews I try and give the good and the bad, but I truly can't think of anything negative to say about this company. I was so pleased I referred them to my sister for a bathroom remodel. Absolutely recommend!

One of the things that impressed me most was their ability to complete the project on budget. In fact, throughout the project they actively helped us save money by finding more cost-effective products and solutions without sacrificing the quality or overall look of the project. That's something I really appreciated as an owner and developer. Communication was also excellent. We had bi-weekly meetings throughout construction to review the project timeline, discuss progress, and work through any issues or questions that came up. Their entire team was responsive, respectful, and always willing to take the time to answer my questions. Most importantly, the craftsmanship and quality of the finished project were outstanding. Building an 11-unit project has plenty of moving parts and challenges, and CalHomeCo did a great job managing the process and delivering a finished product that we're extremely happy with. I would highly recommend CalHomeCo to anyone looking for a contractor for an ADU project. Great guys, a great team, and an excellent experience overall.
