Last September, I saw a TikTok video that described a series of symptoms I've had my entire life. The disorder is called Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) and is a misalignment of the eyes that causes a whole range of symptoms, from dizziness and nausea to anxiety and neck/shoulder pain. I looked up nearby optometrists who could do this specialized eye exam (hardly any offer it), and discovered Jewel City Optometry and Dr. Arlene Yepremian. A few minutes down the road from me! What luck! (I've heard of people flying to LA from Europe for this eye exam.) Now, I've always been a LensCrafters girlie (never again). I truly had no idea there was a better way. I made an appointment for the BVD exam and a few weeks later, I spent almost three hours having my eyes tested. (Also have to mention here that most of the cost of this exam was covered by my regular health insurance!) At the end of my appointment, my (new) eye doctor said, "Well, you have it. You have BVD." Binocular Vision Dysfunction is when your eyes are misaligned and don't work well together, constantly working overtime to deliver a single picture to your brain. I discovered that my right eye drifts and that so many symptoms I experience on a day-to-day basis (and have my whole life) are likely caused by this condition. Symptoms like: -Chronic neck pain -Chronic headaches/migraines -Running into walls and objects and weaving when walking -Anxiety, especially in visually intense situations (games, concerts, theme parks etc.) -Trouble focusing (symptoms that mirror ADHD) -Dizziness and imbalance -Fatigue and eye strain -TMJ -Light and sound sensitivity -Motion sickness ^^ I've had all of the above since I can remember and over the last few years, some of my symptoms have been getting worse. When we started the test on my eyes, Dr. Yepremian immediately said to me, "Oh, we're going to help you." She put the trial prism lenses on me and I don't even know how to describe it. Suddenly, I could walk straight. I could see. Like, really see. I felt like one of those little babies who get baby glasses and can suddenly see their mom for the first time. She said, "Let's go outside," and we did. It felt like stepping out onto another planet. The first thing I noticed was a man walking across the street. And then the palm trees gently blowing in the wind. The bright sun beaming. Cars seemed to float across the pavement. It was a kinder world. A quieter one. My eyes processing one piece of information at a time. It was in that moment that I realized that I usually step outside into a full-on assault. Blinding sun. Colors and movement. Everything entering my brain all at once. For years. And I didn't even know it. I told her I couldn't explain it, but everything was different. I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that within seconds of putting these lenses on, my neck pain went from a 9/10 to a 0. A headache that perpetually plagues the eyebrow above my left eye (who works SO hard, poor guy), dissipated. No light sensitivity. Anxiety from an 8 to a 2. Brain quiet, a benevolent place to exist. Poof. Magic. I started to cry on that busy little street in my inspector gadget goggles. Embarrassing, but she told me that people frequently sob in her office when they receive this diagnosis. She said my eyes are relaxing and my brain is getting what it needs to see with less work. For the first time in 36 years. I got prism lenses specially made and then we test me again a little over a month later and discovered that my eyes changed yet again (due to the left eye being able to relax after 36 years of working overtime). Another set of lenses and now I can see even better! If you have symptoms of BVD or you are not quite thrilled with your current eye prescription, don't hesitate to reach out to Jewel City Optometry. I've been wearing glasses since I was in high school. I've been having headaches and other health issues since grade school. I religiously see the eye doctor every year and I thought I was getting "everything" checked. Then one day I saw someone mention binocular vision dysfunction on TikTok of all places and it sort of clicked: I knew I had to get tested. I found Dr. Yepremian through the NeuroVisual Medicine Institute website (this is the tech used to test for BVD). The office staff was accommodating when I called to make the appointment and let them know I hoped to come in before a surgery date I had several weeks out. When I got to the office I filled out paperwork that included so much more medical information than any optometrist had ever asked me. After I filled out one form, I was given another form with dysautonomia (POTS) symptoms. I've already been diagnosed with that and it was encouraging that it was part of the screening process. Like I mentioned before, I have a laundry list of health issues and I've seen probably almost all the specialists that exist. I have never seen a doctor light up looking at my list of problems before like Dr. Yepremian and I mean that in the best way possible. After looking at many of the issues I've been suffering with for YEARS, she encouragingly told me that she thinks she can help me. *CUE THE FANFARE* I was put through a series of eye tests. Many of them I had done before but many of them were novel to me. I suspected it was going well when I started to experience eye strain from some of the tests. Dr. Yepremian offered salty snacks and elevated my feet between tests that required me to stand, since people with POTS often need extra salt and raising our feet helps with blood flow issues. She explained why she was doing what she was doing and encouraged me to take my time and take breaks if necessary. In the end, I was diagnosed with binocular vision dysfunction in my left eye and I ordered my new prescription with cute new pair of frames Dr. Yepremian helped me pick out. Most importantly but also upsettingly, Dr. Yepremian informed me that she found some "older" looking holes in my retina during the eye imaging. I'd recently been to an ophthalmologist for eye pain in the affected eye, so it was shocking to me that this was missed, but it was very, very clear in the photo. My dad recently suffered retinal detachment that led to blindness, so out of an abundance of caution, I was referred to a retina specialist (who happened to be my Dad's doctors too). I'm looking forward to seeing how my new prism lenses change my life and hopeful that Dr. Yepremian saved me from possible future vision loss due to her findings regarding my retina holes. I don't expect this to be a panacea but I do suspect it will improve many of my issues. I feel very fortunate that I found her and I believe she represents the type of Doctor that all optomologists should strive to be: one who looks at a patient as a WHOLE rather than just a pair of eyes because it's very clear that issues with your eyes can affect your entire body. read more

Absolute worst front desk receptionist I've ever dealt with. She ordered the wrong contact prescription, never called me. I re-ordered the right ones after waiting nearly 3 months. She never called because she wrote down the wrong number, no email also. 6 months go by, I call in and see if my correct lenses came in. She immediately blamed me for lack of communication, took zero responsibility and said she returned my prescriptions two weeks ago because I never came in. Zero phone calls zero emails, nothing. Absolute joke of customer service. I've had better communication with 7-11 employees. Dr Yepremian was excellent so it was shocking, she would hire such incompetence to run the front end. I was BLOWN AWAY by my experience here. Over the last few years I've gotten used to basically all my care institutions (primary care, eye, dentist) completely phoning it in- I have Kaiser, iykyk - and I finally got mad enough at my last eye Dr after my frames snapped a couple days out of warranty and they shrugged their shoulders and left me frameless (and with no frame benefit for a full year and a half, except for a pretty insulting 20% discount on their $350 frame options). Well, my experience here was nothing short of the complete opposite. The exam was WAY more thorough than what I've been used to; exams at my old place were like 15 minutes with the doctor and felt basically perfunctory. To ge fair I was a new patient with no records, but it wasn't just that- Dr. Y spent about 45 min with me including doing the glasses try on part herself instead of sending me to another employee (which isn't a big deal to me but was just another point to impress). And despite the longer time in the office none of it dragged, everything was quick and decisive. And the frames!! I'm used to spending $350 for frames alone, and having 1-3 options that fit my face (which is narrower than maybe average, but not that small!). Here, my literal frames and high index lenses AND the anti reflective coating came to well below that, and I picked from maybe 10 pairs all of which fit great. I had my initial appointment with Dr. Yepremian yesterday, and at the risk of sounding effusive, it was by far the best optometric experience I've ever had. I was the only patient in the office during my appointment, to minimize contact during COVID, which I appreciated so much. No stuffy, "I'm a doctor" attitudes from Dr. Yepremian or her staff--so friendly and down to earth. She spent an hour examining my eyes, explaining what she was doing, really listening to my descriptions of my post-cataract vision issues, and even helping me pick out the best frames for my trifocals. Dr. Yepremyan is an excellent optometrist . She is very ethical and attentive to her patients needs . We have been seeing her for over 2 yrs and will continue being her patients . She is very good with kids exams as well. I have been taking my 6 yr old son and 9 yr old daughter to see her for exams . My son is very active and not always easy to deal with but did very well with Dr. Yepremyan . If I could give this place a -5 star review I would. I would like to share my extremely unpleasant experience this business, as a warning for others to stay away. My mom, who is currently in a wheelchair called Jewel City Optometry several weeks ago in Glendale and scheduled an appointment for today. She received a call back from them confirming an appointment for today June 26th at 1:00pm. There was also a second person in the room with my mom when the call to confirm the appointment was received as the call was on speaker. So, I know that there was an appointment set. We arrive at the appointment today and before we are even able to walk up to the front door, we are greeted by an employee who quickly lets me know that my mom does not have an appointment. I have no idea how the employee knew which patient my mom was to quickly advise us that they could not see her. I walked into the office to ask them to double check and they reassure me that there is not an appointment set. I informed them that due to the fact that they do not have wheelchair access to their office, I had to take an extra person with me to help me with my moms wheelchair up the steps and asked if there was anything they can do to see her today. The only response I received from them was that they are exempt from needing wheelchair access as they are grandfathered in. They completely dismissed my question about trying to fit her in today and almost made it seem like they did not want to examine her as it appeared that they were a bit uncomfortable treating a disabled person. If you need an optometrist, I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. My mom was extremely upset that she was not able to get her eye exam today. She has been having some issues with her vision since her tumor resection last year and was very excited at the idea of new glasses and the ability to better read. It crushed me to see her so upset. I would NOT recommend this business AT ALL, and especially if you have a disabled family member as they are definitely not able to serve the disabled. read more

In short, Dr. Yepremian is the best Optometrist I have ever had, and more importantly, she is one of the nicest and most caring people I know. My wife and I have been seeing her for over 12 years now, so I couldn't believe it when I realized that I had never written a Yelp review until now. Dr. Yepremian is knowledgeable, professional, patience, and so experienced as an Optometrist. She is such a caring person, and it shows in the way that she operates her practice. I have never felt rushed during any of my appointments, and she is always ready and willing to answer any questions that I may have. Over the years, I had developed cataracts in both of my eyes, and it was she that first detected them and monitored their development over the years, and when it was time to treat them, she recommended a great Ophthalmologist who did an amazing job. My husband and I have been Dr. Yepremian's patients for 10+ years and now our children are her patients as well. Dr. Yepremian is professional and very friendly. She really takes her time with each of us during our exams and makes the process pleasant. My young children enjoy seeing her as well and she makes them feel very calm and comfortable during the exams. I recently had a bad allergic reaction in one of my eyes which required a few visits to Dr. Yepremian. She helped me tremendously and it was a relief knowing she was there to help me. I've been a patient of hers for years (since she was at Linden in Pasadena) and I plan to be for many more. You're not a number on a file to her. She treats you like a friend. Dr. Yepremian is a super nice fun lady, and extremely caring and thorough in her exams. The lady at the front desk was very sweet and helpful. We chatted about this and that while we were waiting for my pupils to dilate (she's a U2 fan) . She gave me two pairs of trial lenses that feel great. I stumbled upon this jewel several years ago when I lived in Glendale. Dr. Yepremian (a.k.a. Arlene) took the time to explain to me my condition and my alternatives for contact lenses. I intially went there seeking a local eye doctor different from lens crafters, Costco etc. and that is exactly what I had found. Arlene is attentative and highly knowledgable. I am relaxed and confident in her professionalism and also her personal care as a Dr. She has allowed me to try numerous free samples to find what best suits my eyes. I believe it's hard to find a good eye doctor that you can really trust these days and she is definitely one that I would recommend to my friends (which I have) and would travel from Torrance to consult and purchase from. At this point, people may ask if I was paid to praise her practice to this extent. But I give this place 4 stars instead of 5 and the reason is the business hours. Jewel City Optometry is only open 3 days a week, which at times makes it inconvenient to schedule an appointment. However, while I was sitting, waiting to be seen by Arlene, I spoke with another regular customer of hers and we both agreed about her trust worthy service. I presume the majority of her patients are regulars who probably would not go else where for eye-care. And that speaks volumes for a picky guy like me. I've been a patient of Dr. Yepremian for over 15 years! There's no one I trust more with my eyes. I haven't had any trouble with them, but she is just so professional and has so much integrity I trust her completely...she genuinely cares about the health of your eyes and that's it. She doesn't try to sell you anything extra, she just wants everyone to take care of their eyes. Her office is small, clean and quiet and it's just her and a receptionist. I used to see her at another location that was so busy, it was like a cattle call...I'm so happy for her that she has her own office and that it is a successful business. Dr. Yepremian has numerous raving reviews and one more 5 star reference will not change things. I stumbled on to her at another location many years ago and was taken by her thoroughness and patience. I would not go to any one now even though I've since moved to another state. I have a difficult prescription that includes addition of PRISM, up in one eye and down in the other. This adds quite a bit to the time it takes to fit the best prescription. Dr. Yepremian is never, never weary of spending that time, until she nails it. Sometimes when I return and she retests she would not hesitate further optimizing the prescription and order a whole new lens(s); always with a smile and diligence while engaging me in a casual conversation. I think her passion in life is the best vision for her patients. If you found her, you know you have the best. read more

If you need your eyes looked at, go see Dr. Yepremian! I got lucky and had her as one of my optometrists at a different eye clinic I'd been going to for years. Once I learned that she had her own clinic, I never went back! She accurately assesses my eyes and makes the right prescription, which is not easy to do with my annoyingly difficult astigmatism. She really puts a lot of time and effort into my eye care. When I moved to the Bay Area, I still made sure to schedule my appointments with her during trips back to Los Angeles. I wouldn't trust anyone else! She is by far, one of the best doctors I've ever had the pleasure of seeing, and to top it off, she's also one of the most amazing people I've met.
