I should have left when there were not one, but two disgruntled customers in store present upon my initial visit... (one with a lost contact prescription, one upset about getting pressured to buy frames) I wanted to support a local small business so I came here to get my lenses updated. One of the employees was helping swap lenses from a broken pair of glasses to my new frames, was unsuccessful, and damaged my brand new frames (that I purchased elsewhere and brought in) in the process. The owner was too busy pressuring me to buy new frames despite me saying over, and over, and OVER again that I don't need new frames. When I brought up the damage they caused, the store owner was indignant and said it was my own fault for authorizing them to work on it. For a simple service, I wasn't expecting such a chaotic atmosphere in the store and such rude service from the owner. It's really a shame. Edit: I had a good laugh reading all the 1 and 2 star reviews hidden just below the sight line. Dr. Kim is, by all accounts, a menace to Montrose. One good thing to come from this is I was so frustrated that I purchased my own optometry equipment and learned to adjust my own glasses. Rewarding! read more

Updating my review from a few years ago. I have learned to ask questions prior to payment (a good tip anywhere you frequent). Today I had my annual eye exam. Very thorough and informative. I brought old frames (w/ progressives) I had purchased there, as well as another pair (of readers) I got last year. They were able to work with the old progressive frames (6 yrs ago) to get new lenses added. And for the readers, I shared they fell off after only a month last year and chipped. They molded them to fit better in my face and are replacing the lenses. I'm so very grateful for the time they took to ensure both pairs would work for me moving forward. I had not been to the eye doctor for many years, and so i did my research, visited 3 different optometry offices, asked questions and then decided on Montrose Optometry. The receptionists, assistants and Dr Lin were the best, way above on all aspects from the other places. First of all, I was nervous about getting my eyes checked and all of the employees made me feel so comfortable. Plus they are all very professional, competent, caring and informative. Dr Lin is excellent, friendly and caring, but also professional and competent at her job. Very nice Optometrist. I needed a new prescription after cataract surgery, got an apt very quickly. Very happy with their efficiency.

I was a patient here for probably 7 years and it was always an acceptable but mediocre experience. Care was sufficient but perfunctory. Frames were expensive and they tended to have 1-3 pairs that fit my face width. They would usually offer me child's frames as an alternative which just really weren't what I was looking for. But my experience went from all right to awful when I got my last frames in early 2021. I went with metal frames for the first time; asked if they would be just as durable as plastic and was assured they would be. Well, the frame arms were attached to the front of the glasses with these little metal loops and a screw, and over time with normal wearing and nightly folding, the loops started to get twisted and open up, so the arms and screws would slip out and fall off. It started happening maybe 8-9 months after I got them, but I had recently had a baby so I didn't muster the energy to go in until just under a year since I bought them. They tightened down the screws and sent me on my way. A week later the arm completely broke off. I came back and they were like "well you could superglue them." I asked them to replace and they apparently called the company but it was a no as they were (just) out of warranty. There was absolutely no move on the part of Montrose optometry to stand behind a product they sell and take a hit for a long term customer because it didn't work out- they were only willing to do it on the frame manufacturer's dime. And I really do think these frames were subpar, by contrast I still have (and am wearing at this moment), my plastic frames from two years before that (from MO) AND I still have my cheap Costco frames from literally 5-6 years ago. Yet these $$$ frames I'd bought only the previous year were already broken to pieces. They ended up offering me 20% off a new pair and I was so insulted I just never bothered to go back and talk to them or pick up the pieces of my glasses. I could never imagine running a business like this. If you're thinking about going here... I would look elsewhere. If you go here and it's been all right, just know that you can do better! My new optometrist (check my other reviews to see where) blew me away with their attentiveness and professionalism, and they had easily 10 or more pairs of frames THAT FIT ME, AND the total including high index lenses and an extra coating was less $ than just frames from MO. 10000% wish I looked elsewhere years ago. read more

Contacted Montrose Optometry for an "object stuck in eye" emergency. Not only did they take me immediately, they put me at ease. SHANDRA at the front desk was professional, smart and helpful. DR. LIN removed the object, examined eye, prescribed eye drops & stated that my eye would heal within 10 days. She was correct, eye healed. Grateful for Dr. Lin! While waiting for me my husband shopped the huge variety of glasses and found several pairs he liked. The location was super easy access, the reception area was warm, clean and welcoming. Exceptional experience, we will be back. NOTE: Based on the low star drawn-out reviews, here's my takeaway: We were never upsold on anything, overcharged for anything, our insurance coverage was accepted and we would not expect any free service or returns. Two reviews had multiple previous "bad experiences?"..So why go back? Expired warranties are not valid, and office staff are highly trained to ID manufacturing defects as opposed to breakage by other sources. read more

I had a very upsetting experience here today and will also be filing a complaint with the Optometry Board. What I experienced is similar (but more extreme) to the other reviews of Dr. Kim, and was a worse version of the exam I received from Dr. Kim last year. I should've trusted my gut and not returned. I have worn contacts for about 30 years. I know the brand that works for me, and my prescription has been stable for about 20 years. Last year, Dr Kim lowered my prescription, which seemed very unusual. When I questioned her on it, she didn't like that so I just went with it. This year she tried to change my contact brand, saying that my eye irritation wasn't caused by my 6 week old contacts, and she would determine what brand I should use. I told her I would prefer to stick with my current brand, when I've tried to switch I get eye infections. I also asked for her respect that I know what works for my eyes. Then she said, "well ok, I guess I'm just here to do what you want and make you happy." She said that sarcastically several times during the exam, which was very uncomfortable and aggressive. She also tried to tell me that I was having trouble switching to near and far vision, and "if you would let me I could help you with that." She continued to insist that she knew what she was talking about, she's been an optometrist for 30 years. At that point I told her, I am not having eye strain issues, it's not my concern. I just need my contacts, my eyes hurt and I just came for fresh contacts. Then at the end of the exam she tried to raise my prescription two steps, but then said "just because I'm trying to make you happy, I'll compromise and only raise it one step." I tried to point out that the irony is that she lowered my prescription last year, and that her communication style made me very uncomfortable because it was very passive aggressive. I did not raise my voice, I was very calm, and VERY uncomfortable. She told me to put my old contacts back in and that I wasn't welcome there. Then, as if that wasn't bad enough, she yelled in front of the whole store for her assistant to come "escort this woman out of the store." It was baffling and totally unnecessary, and embarrassing. Needless to say I won't be back. An hour later I went to Target in Burbank and left with the same prescription I've had since I went there five years ago, and the same brand of contacts. I even asked the doctor if she recommended I change brands, she said no, my eyes looked fine and it was just an old pair of lenses causing minor irritation. I've had a couple of bad experiences with this place that this time I was compelled to write a review about them. During the pandemic in 2020 I ordered a pair of Italian glasses and it took 4 months to get the glasses and another 3-4 weeks for them to do the lenses. I tried to be understanding given that everything was closed and international shipments took forever. A few days ago I called them to schedule an appointment to get a full eye exam along with contact lense exam and I was told the earliest appointment would be later this week. Considering I desperately needed contact lenses, I went and got my exam elsewhere. The optometrist wrote down a recommended brand on the prescription. So I got an appointment with Montrose Optometry and walked in with a prescription and a will to get contact lenses through my insurance and pay out of pocket to upgrade the lenses on 2 pairs of glasses. I specifically told the rep that I didn't care for the recommended brand and even asked him for a specific one that's worked for me in the past. He called the doctor on call, and ended up turning me away because they don't honor prescriptions from another optometrist and tried to sell me their eye exam. What a joke and a huge inconvenience. I've been coming to Dr. Kim for years and always disliked how they upsold me on unnecessary extras and generally overcharged for everything. But they were friendly and conveniently located, so I resisted the upselling and accepted their higher prices. Unfortunately the quality of their work and service is unacceptably lower than their prices. When it comes to Montrose Optometry, you definitely do NOT get what you pay for. For example, a couple years ago they upsold me on special protective film for my lenses that ended up bubbling and streaking in a way that made reading difficult. They took their sweet time fixing the lenses and then gently scolded me for their own shoddy work, giving me the line that "this time will fix it but next time you'll have to pay." As a small business owner, the first rule is to stand behind your product. Apparently Montrose Optometry operates from a different play book. My most recent experience was the last straw. I purchased some nice frames while traveling in Europe this summer and brought them to Montrose Optometry for new lenses. They told me that as the lenses were not in stock, they would have to charge me nearly 30% more. Again, as a small business owner, when I don't have an item in stock, a customer will have to simply wait longer for me to get it in, not be charged an arm an a leg more because of how I chose to manage my inventory. When questioned, they explained that my frames were a special European size. Okay, sounds reasonable. But then they told me that lenses for the frames that I had previously purchased from THEM were also out of stock, and that they would again have to charge me 30% more. They didn't even bother offering a new rationale for the rip off. I ended up taking that second pair of glasses to Society of the Spectacle in Highland Park which put in new lenses within a week for nearly half the price. When I did finally get back my European frames from Montrose Optometry, they had put totally wrong lenses in. Now at this point any smart business interested in standing behind their product/services or keeping a long-time customer happy would have offered some kind of discount as a courtesy for the inconvenience caused by their mistake. But they did not, so I asked. I got one of those used car lot "let me talk to the manager and see what I can do" lines. Of course they never followed up. They couldn't even commit to quickly fixing the problem. It took another 3 weeks to get my lenses corrected. Then they offered me $50 off on my next purchase. It was honestly insulting. I politely told them there would be no next purchase as I would be taking my business elsewhere. They could care less. I rarely write Yelp reviews and generally have low expectations, so I can assure you that a business has to be really really bad to make me put in the time and effort. Montrose Optometry rises to that level of outstandingly poor work and service. They have 3 locations which is a testament to their successful business model of grossly overcharging the public. Don't be a sucker and shop around. When paying top dollar, you deserve much much more than you'll ever get here. read more

I've been getting exams here since 2018. Everything was usually fine. I bought some huge rx sunglasses last August for $542. The case spring broke a few weeks ago. I ordered a new case on Amazon, but it's too small. I went in today to find out if they could replace the case or if I could buy a case. They don't have any extra cases to give or sell. I dropped my sunglasses on the ground, over the weekend and asked if they could adjust them. They told me that they don't have the machine to make adjustments and that they'll call me when they have it again. Eyeglass cases and adjusting machines seem like items an optometrist should have... I had another eye exam here in January of this year. I bought the progressive glasses somewhere else. My vision ended up being worse than with my 2-year-old rx. I had to go back and forth between Montrose Optometry and the place I purchased glasses multiple times. Now I feel like both places are annoyed with me and I still see better with my 2-year-old glasses. read more

The staff was nice the place was clean and they got me in and out of there although I'm still waiting for my glasses after a phone call another phone call had a follow-up to the last phone call they finally got a hold of the people who are making them and I got some yarn about how lenses aren't fitting into the frames and yada yada yada. So pretty much the same as Linden or other places but without the long lines and feeling like cattle. Nothing wrong with the Van Nuys location, it's just there is less variety and the prices are cheaper because they don't carry higher brands as they do here. I've given this place the benefit of the doubt far too many times, thinking that maybe it's the fault of the health care industry and insurance. While those assumptions remain true, the optometry side of the shop is a big problem. It is overpriced and uninformative, and once you lay out your nearly $1k for glasses, they're pretty reluctant to stand by their product. The ophthalmologists are just fine - it's both the front of the shop and their outside crafters/manufacturers that ruin the good work. I have gone in several times to have my glasses adjusted, and once again today, Joel was particularly skilled and friendly- not to mention willing, to spend time with me and not one - but two! - pairs of glasses were expertly adjusted! The designer frames are a much better price than some upscale shops: Prada, Tom Ford, etc; and I'm never rushed when I try on as many pairs as I want. Not satisfied with this location at all with the service I received in June 2023. I got my classes from them in December of 2022. I went back in June this year because one side of the frame fell apart. The front desk female employee took the frames from me and said right away " this is not a manufacturing defect". I said to her " how did you come to this conclusion in less than one second without further looking into it with a professional who knows these parts of the frames and sending it to the manufacturer. She said " sorry this is not a manufacturer defect there is nothing I can do for you" . She then said " I can help you but you have to pay $130 for other frames". I'm upset because she should have taken the frames from me and sent it out to the manufacturer to make that decision not by just looking at it and sending me on my way. I did not damage these glasses the frame came apart on its own, and I had taken very good care of it because of how expensive these glasses were. My insurance has paid for some of the price for these glasses and I paid out of pocket 150$ for these frames. Mind you this store has on display several gadgets that I'm assuming is for fixing frames. This employee just looked at it for less than a second and sent me out the door, without using these gadgets. This is not okay to treat a paying customer this way. I would expect better service since they have such high prices. I am out of luck right now and I have to wait another whole year before my insurance can pay for new glasses for me. Be careful entering this store to do any business with them. When it comes to charging you they're great but then you have any little concern they refuse to assist you. I do not and will not ever refer or recommend anyone to this store. I will also be taking mine and my families business else where. You just lost 5 customers by losing me! read more

My first visit was with Dr Kim and today's visit was with Dr April. The staff are cordial and making an appointment is never a problem. They are always accommodating and have varied hours in the week so to ease your appointment scheduling. Dr April was great! She's sweet, quick and straight to the point. Dr Kim, just as great and thorough. Their prices have been fairly comparable to what I normally pay at my optometry in the past which is a hefty price, but all worth it since I drive all day for work. They take insurance and I have VSP PPO, so just ask which one they accept. They also take private patients with discounts advertised and yelp check-ins. See y'all next year!! read more

Thank you, Dr Kim! I managed to get a piece of saw dust under my eye lid yesterday which I couldn't remove myself. (I tried, it failed). The pain was pretty bad & my eye was swollen this morning. I called them up & was able to get an appointment within the hour. (They're open on Saturday & the entire staff is awesome!) It took Dr Kim maybe 10 min to examine, locate, and remove the object. I must say, at first I was afraid of someone "removing something from my eye", but she was so professional & let me know step by step what she was doing. It was painless & I had immediate relief. So happy I found this place, which happens to be blocks from my home! Also, I don't have insurance & was nervous about the costs. However, it was extremely affordable and I'll definitely be back for an actual eye exam. One other note: the interior space is clean & beautiful. Only interested in your money. I'm new to corrective lenses and felt taken for a ride the entire time. They even wrote two separate prescriptions for reading and distance glasses without even explaining bifocals to me. They also didn't provide my PD on the prescription, which is very suspect. Additionally, they did not tell me that contact exams are different from eye exams, so now I have to schedule another exam with a different company that costs just as much, rendering the initial exam useless. I understand this may be common knowledge to some, but I went there looking for trusted guidance and an honest assessment as a first-timer and received anything but. I've had many eye appointments here (nice frame selection, they are overpriced so I never purchase frames here), but never received Dr. Kim as my optometrist. I don't like calling out specific people, but I was really uncomfortable. She was very pleasant until we made final paying decisions. Extremely pushy and wanted nothing more than my money. I felt extremely pressured to buy their frames and opt into other fancy things, and felt like I had no option. She made a "suggestion" to use my insurance and buy their frames after I declined three separate times in one conversation. She even offered to call me to remind me to use my insurance with them. For years, I went to the mega optometry store in Pasadena (Dr. Lidexxxx) because I liked their large frame selections. However, the increasing lack of personal customer service, high turnover and factory churn process left me not wanting to go back. By chance, I found Montrose Optometry. My daughters (age 8 and 10) and I had our eyes examined and everyone was SUPER great! The staff were very attentive to my girls's first eye exam. Both girls have 20/20 but more importantly, they enjoyed their experience. Customer service is top notch and frame selection is not bad- plenty to choose from. I had a great experience there when I got fitted for glasses. Both eye exams were thorough. When I went to get contacts though, it was terrible. Full disclosure, I've never had them before and for whatever reason, I could not get the hang of it at all. It took me one hour to get the lens in one time. It was a really horrible experience. I'm going to have to find another place that can help me figure out what I was doing wrong. It's a shame because I did like the doctors, but it definitely is not the place for me as far as getting contacts goes. read more

The staff are very professional, nice and knowledgeable; and "organized" doesn't begin to describe how well-run this establishment is. I also really appreciate the frame selection. They have a well-curated selection - you're not faced with a jillion options that leave you confused, unsure and frustrated. There are plenty to choose from, and they are all high-quality, appropriate for all types of glasses-wearers, and speak to many different styles. The exam was great! The optometrist took her time and did a good job of correcting my husband's vision even tho he has macular degeneration. But the price that was quoted for the lenses after our insurance co-pay went from $120 to an additional $95 to an additional $195 so just the lenses alone without new frames and with our insurance covering $150 of the cost was going to cost us out of pocket $315! We're going to Costco to get the lenses made. read more

I went here to get a second opinion on a new prescription that didn't quite seem right to me. I'll have to apologize to Dr. Tang, because the experience I had with Target Optical was way better than Montrose Optometry. Dr. Kim was thoroughly professional for the first few minutes of my appointment. I tried to explain why I was there, and that I have a very small degree of correction and have had some really mixed experiences with optometrists as a result. What I got, instead, was a lot of sales pitch on blue blocking treatment for glasses, a cursory exam for my (admittedly minor) astigmatism and slight nearsightedness, and her insistence that I need progressive lenses. Even when I pointed out that the progressive lenses she had me try made it harder for me to view close up objects, she insisted that I would need close correction. Despite this, I tried a set of glasses with her prescription. Thankfully, Warby Parker has a 30 day no questions asked return policy. Dr. Kim's prescription matched my prior one in the astigmatism correction for one eye, but differed a bit on the other. After a couple of weeks trying her prescription, I can only conclude that I didn't know how good I had it with my prior optometrist. I would have been really pissed if I'd followed her recommendation and spent $400+ dollars on one of the frames at her store with the treatments and add-ons that were recommended. read more

I went in for an eye exam today and was well pleased with the service. I was seen by Dr. Ganesh, who was very helpful, thorough, and patient in explaining all the goings on. I took retina images and Dr. Ganesh explained exactly what the images showed and recommended care to keep my eyes in good shape. Then, I was attended by a young lady (I didn't get her name but you can't miss her....she's cuter than 99.999% of the people who have ever walked this earth) who was equally helpful, patient, and thorough. She helped me decide on frames and lenses and explained all the options without being pushy about selling them. Pure class, this place. I had a 10:30 appointment this morning. I arrived at 10:16 to fill out new patient paper work. They informed me that the doctor was running late. So, I looked around for a little bit. Then I hear the receptionist on the phone with the doctor. She then informs me that the doctor comes from far away and is stuck on the 210 and will be "maybe" 20 mins late. That's fine with me. I get it. It's out of the doctors hands. However...they asked me to reschedule. What!?! Hold up! I don't mind waiting, but you're telling me instead of calling a patient that is at home and has not even left the house gets an appointment and the person who is waiting around doesn't!? That doesn't make sense. Good practice would of been to see the person who showed up and waited around and rescheduled the other people who weren't even there. Today was my first time at Montrose Optometry and my first eye exam. I loved my experience here! The staff are so sweet and are extremely helpful! They have a wide variety of name-brand glasses and sunglasses and they make you feel very welcome there. One of the staff members, Maureen, is super sweet and helpful. She tightened the sunglasses I bought there and took the time to ensure that they were comfortable on me. She also helped my husband find the sunglasses that he wanted. This place is also located on Honolulu where you can grab a bite to eat afterwards or walk around to see the different shops on the street. My husband and I will definitely continue coming here! I called in advance and asked for a quote for a first time cash patient. I needed to renew my contact lens prescription, and I specifically mentioned that I already have a contact lens prescription. I was given a $75 quote TWICE! Yet, when i arrived and had the exam done, they asked me to pay $150 and said sorry for the miscommunication! Sorry does not cut it! It's not my fault your employees misinformed me. Total rip-off for a simple eye exam!
