#56 Big Kahuna Cheese Steak
Larry M.

All right so one of my followers gave me a suggestion to do a versus between Charleys Philly steaks @charleys.uae and Jersey Mike's subs @jerseymikes . I thought this to be somewhat peculiar because I had never heard of the former, so I was immediately amped for this versus tasting...pressed...yes I was pressed!! OK so let's get into it! I went to the Charley's located at 3500 East West Highway, Hyattsville Maryland, inside of PG Plaza's food court. OK they got cheesesteaks ranging from $7.79 for a small, $9.99 for a regular, and $11.99 for a large. You can add (additional $2 for meat, $1 for bacon and/or cheese) or remove any toppings...like the bread. They have chicken cheesesteaks, steak cheesesteaks, turkey melts, cold cut subs, even a grilled mushroom veggie sub. They have plain and topped fries (you can top them with cheese sauce, bacon pieces, jalapeños etc...) from $1.99-$4.49. Also you can get real fruit lemonades. Ok so I copped their original Philly cheesesteak (pictured/with extra meat, provolone, onions, mushrooms, green peppers, lettuce, tomato, Mayo, pickles, a medium fry, and a large strawberry lemonade $19.90. STAMP the lemonade...fresh ingredients, palate pleasing, and I was surprised at the real fruit at the end. The fries were decent. The cheesesteak was decent. It had all the fixings it was shooting have, and it was good, don't get me wrong. I just needed some extra flavor, and bite to this sub!! Ok Jersey Mike's has regular subs at $9.50, Giant subs at $16.50, wraps at $9.50, and bowls at $9.50. Extra meat is $2.50, extra cheese $1.75, and gluten free bread is $3. They have cold cuts, steak and chicken cheesesteaks, even a portobello veggie cheesesteak. No fries here, only chips or cookies. I got their Big Kahuna (pictured with Rosemary Parmesan bread, extra steak, jalapeños, mushrooms, red, and green peppers, grilled onions, and extra white American cheese with a large Cream soda $18.70). With the cheese infused with the bread, and meat...and the burst of pepper, and onion flavors in each bite...Jersey Mike's wins this Vs. for me!! STAMP!! Go to both, and you make the call!! That's it. #Bigschlimsreviews

Pretty good sandwich. For the cost I wish it had more filling, but the quality is top notch. Would return but definitely not my go to spot

This place is phenomenal!…read more We visited on a Thursday, just after they opened at 11. We were able to find street parking right out front, and order pretty quickly. We got a Dino Rib, Wagyu Brisket, cornbread, banana pudding, key lime pie, blackberry cider, and water, which totaled just under $100. And I will say it was well worth it!! The only thing we probably could have done without was the key lime pie. The employees were friendly and service was quick. The whole place gave instant Texas vibes, even the bathroom matched the bbq style, super cute. We will definitely return again.

I was also disappointed to learn that wings are served only on Saturdays. I ordered on a Friday and didn't know this beforehand. Let's note, my husband had to travel a long way to get there. After looking forward to this meal all week, spending nearly $80 on a below-average dinner was frustrating. I wish I could get my money back--but as Judge Judy says, "You ate the steak, so you have to pay for it."

They're small, but have a surprisingly good variety of snacks, drinks, breakfast and lunch options. I ordered a bacon, egg & cheese on a croissant, an iced caramel latte with almond milk, a turkey & provolone sandwich for later, and a caramel crunch bar. That bacon, egg & cheese croissant?! YESSS. The croissant was good, and the iced caramel latte was delicious with the almond milk. I ate the turkey & provolone later that day and it was just okay for me -- a little dry and definitely my least favorite of everything I purchased. Nowwww...my total was over $32. For a breakfast sandwich, turkey sandwich, latte and a snack bar, I definitely thought that was a little pricey. I had to look at that total twice! Overall, though, good food, great service, convenient location and easy parking. I'd come back -- but next time I might not get quite so carried away at the register.

I used to have a 4 star rating but the recent changes make up for the 1 star!…read more Let's talk about their cute store and ice cream shop that just opened recently. First, if I'm getting anyone a gift, it's from here. It's the most random trinkets but they're funny. I love a good laugh. The cards take the cake! I literally find the most hilarious or thoughtful cards. My future hubby doesn't like gifts, he's a man's man, so cards it is. I'm a giver so it's hard not to buy things for him but these cards are sweet and convey the sentiments of my heart. We aren't getting into it because everything is a must try. A local staple in Hyattsville, I highly recommend even if it's for their novelty shop or ice cream! Ambiance is casual! Come as you are! Cheers Yelpies!

I am on their email list (and yes I read most of my emails that are of interest to me) and noted they had an Oktoberfest kick off party happening this week on Thursday evening from 6pm -9pm in their outside patio, so decided to come here. We showed up at 6pm on the dot and the place outside was already packed with people. They were having a live Oktoberfest trio band play, so that was cool! A lot of people were in their Oktoberfest garb/outfits, which was adorable. The challenge was getting a beer and a non alcoholic drink for my mom. They had nothing NA for her and she ended up just having a glass of ice water. I got in the mobbed line and had a Kellerbier, which was brewed especially for Franklin's and Oktoberfest. They had an issue with their handheld payment device so that made the line longer. Beer was fine, but wished I could have gotten my mom a lemonade or iced tea. The other issue was the seating. We opted to sit over in the sandbox/kids area and the picnic tables didnt feel like the best use of space. The trio band was lovely and played some nice tunes including Edelweiss which is one of my favorite songs ever (yes I loved The Sound of Music and have watched this so many times as a kid with my mom) but it would have been nice to see the band more in the center of things, closer to the bar hut. They were serving up German sausages and huge pretzels but the line for beverages and food was so long that I didnt bother to purchase food. This was a great idea and I hope that the next one they do, they can iron out some of the wonky kinks. I'd come back again for an Oktoberfest for sure. My mom and I had a great time!
