We purchased a house a few years ago that had a gas insert fireplace installed by Jerry and the previous owners. During renovations we purchased a new faceplate and Kim in Hayward showroom was super helpful with options and gave us a fair price for what we wanted. Initially we didn't use the gas fireplace much because our kids were too little at the time... fast forward a few years and now that the kiddos are older, running the fireplace sounds great! Except for one problem... its been three years since we last used it, so is it safe to just start up again? I spoke with Kim again and she was quick to answer all my questions and address my concerns. She even offered to walk me through re-lighting the pilot light incase it went out. Horrible customer service. I was in need of a part for my wood stove. I called and spoke to a lady on a Friday afternoon regarding placing an order. She needed to get more information regarding a second item I was interested in. She said that she would check with someone real quick and call me back. She never called back that day. I then called back on Saturday and was told she was off and I was told to call back on Monday. I called back on Monday and Laura answered the phone and said that the other person was off until Tuesday. She took a phone message and said I would get a call back. Guess what? He comes off as arrogant and condescending, but a part of me thinks he doesn't even realize it. When I asked a question, his response would often have a condescending tone to it. As one who used their service on the recommendations of neighbors, found Jerry to be knowledgeable, hard working and totally thorough in his approach to cleaning my fireplace and flue. Explained in detail many questions I had and recommended cleaning products for the glass in front, removed all creosole buildup from top of chimney down to the firepit. Used professional tools and methods that enabled him to get into crevasses and hard to reach places in the fireplace. He has been in the business for nearly thirty years, is a California native and certainly knows fireplace cleaning. He left the work area clean and undisturbed, gave a thorough assessment on paper of each item of the fireplace system assuring it's safety and function. I would highly recommend him and his company to get the job done right. Jerry's Fireplace rocks! And, just in time for the holidays. We had originally gotten a quote on a fireplace insert from another Oakland-based firm who told us that they wouldn't be able to install it until late January. After some searching for the manufactured we wanted (Mendota) we found Jerry's and visited their showroom. We showed them our original quote and they beat the price by $1,000 and told us they could install it a week later! Jerry came by the house for an inspection prior to the install and was professional and nice. He answered all my stupid questions and provided valuable insight into some of the aspects of the insert we were getting. On installation day, he and his crew were on-time and respectful of our aged tripod chihuahua. They were very tidy and cleaned up completely after installation. He walked us through the features of the fireplace so that we would understand how best to adapt the unit to our needs. All told, we are so happy we went with Jerry's Fireplaces. First-rate experience. We walked in, showed Jerry a photo of our fireplace, and he pointed us right to the perfect gas insert. We had been to one other shop that also had good yelp reviews: great guys, but not the right insert for us. Our home was built in 1908, so the typical wide inserts wouldn't have looked right, and Jerry had one that was both beautiful and near square. The other shop only carried one brand (Canadian), but Jerry carries many, so there's a great selection (all American, if that makes a difference to you). Jerry demonstrated the fireplace features nicely (fan, lighting, and gas levels), answered how much it costs to run one (about $0.50/hr full blast) and other questions, and gave us an estimate. We slept on it, called back a couple of days later, and made an appointment for Jerry to come out, look our situation over, and firm the deal up with a contract, which he did in a very professional, matter-of-fact way. Jerry is also an absolute expert when it comes to chimneys, which was a real bonus for us with our old chimney. He was a chimney guy for years, has been in the business for around 30 years. He gave us an professional assessment of our chimney's state and that made us feel very comfortable that he knew what he was doing and that an insert was a good way to go. He educated us about our chimney and suggested we get a "sparrow" cap for another part of the chimney. Ours was missing one, so we asked him to add that to the deal ($100). Phone service was excellent the two times I made contact by phone (Alisa??), and installation was scheduled promptly. The day of installation, Jerry was 10 minutes early, started stacking boxes on the front porch, then knocked on the door at 8am sharp. His electrician and plumber were equally punctual for the wiring and gas, and the job was completed smoothly, cleanly (zero clean up), and professionally by all. Other than the electrical and gas line, Jerry did the whole installation himself, from start to finish, in about 6 hours. When he was done, I really appreciated that he carefully took me though how to use the remote control (I wish I had gotten the same kind of orientation for our new HVAC controller -- I still don't get it, despite multiple readings of the manual!). We had a great experience with Jerry's Fireplaces, and I want to give credit and praise where it's due. We love our new fireplace and the whole family gathers around it! read more

10/10/16 Update to orginal post: Jerry called on 9/27/16 and wanted to make the situation right. He offered to come out and take a look at my insert that day, free of charge. I was impressed! Couldn't make it home in time that day but he offered to come any evening so it wouldn't impact my work. Very thoughtful. I scheduled an appt. for today at 8am. He was here a few minutes early, thoroughly inspected the insert, and found the problem. The blanket was not put back properly and was partially blocking the path the smoke takes, resulting in smoke rolling into my house. He asnwered all my questions and provided me tools on how to make the insert operate the most efficient way possible. Thank you, Jerry! You went above and beyond and I won't make the mistake of going with another chimney service again. I'll call you and recommend you to everyone I know! Original Post: I am so disappointed in the customer service I received from Jerry today. I purchased a fireplace insert from him about 10 years ago and was hoping he could come take a look at it. Was having a problem with smoke entering the house and not being drawn up the chimney. Scheduled an appointment over the phone with his wife and she provided me a quote. Took the afternoon off of work and was home at 2pm, awaiting their arrival. 3pm rolled around and no Jerry. I called the shop and left a message. 4pm arrived and still no Jerry and no return phone call from the shop. So, I called again. I spoke with a nice woman who informed me that they had left a message last week about not being able to make the appointment today. I never received a message last week....turns out his wife took my number down incorrectly. And the next available chimney cleaning appointment was a month away! I informed her I was not necessarily in need of a chimney cleaning, I had smoke coming in my house. They could not come any earlier than a month. She apologized and I said I'd call back or find someone else. She must have shared what happened with Jerry because he called back. I was hopeful that he'd make this right! He asked me if I'd had the insert/chimney cleaned in the last 10 years (of course!) and I provided the name of one of the companies I've used. He immediately said that's why it's not working....they damaged something because they didn't know what they're doing. He then stated that his wife quoted me the 'summer rate' and we were now in the fall/winter rate, so the price would be more. Since I had taken the afternoon off work and his staff/wife made the errors, I asked if he would honor the summer rate? Answer: No. He also added that his wife never should have made the appointment for today. That statement didn't have anything to do with me, so I didn't find it helpful. Customer Service 101 would have been to offer something for the inconvenience. I'm just very disappointed in how I was treated today. It appears that they already have too many customers, so I'd take your business elsewhere. read more

We just had Jerry's Fireplaces install an Avalon gas insert into our fireplace. We couldn't be more pleased with it! We met his wife at their booth at the Alameda County Fair and she took plenty of time to explain our options, demonstrate the various inserts and answer our questions. When I called their shop to book an appt. I was given a date the very next week. Jerry came out and measured the fireplace, answered more questions that I had, and showed me several choices. I have an antique mantle that posed some problems as well as a hazard within the cavity of the fireplace, but Jerry assured me they could be delt with. He was very professional and very knowledgable throughout our meeting. I made my decision and he recommended I go to their showroom and see the model I had chosen. His shop is in an industrial area, easy to find as well as parking readily available. The lady in the shop was courteous and very helpful. On installation day he and his crew arrived promptly, laid down tarps to protect my hardwood floors. The mantle and surrounding tiles were carefully removed so the fireplace could be worked on. His crew showed most care and concern while working on the mantle to not damage it in any way. The mantle was returned in one piece (something I was greatly concerned about) tiles replaced and grouted and Jerry explained he would have to return the next day to insert the gas unit, after the grout had cured. Jerry was promptly at my door the next morning, finished the installation and demonstrated the unit to my satisfaction. I would not hesitate to recommend Jerry's Fireplaces to anyone! We wanted to replace our drafty old fireplace with an enclosed gas insert and found Jerry's at the Alameda County Fair. Jerry came out to give us an estimate, told us he had a great contractor to remove and reinstall our antique mantelpiece, and said he could have it done within the month; so we made an appointment to have the insert installed. The installation took a day and a half, he fixed a problem that the previous homeowner had hidden behind the mantel, and the finished work was impeccable. BUYER BEWARE. This man will make you believe he is a great guy. That is far from the truth. We were taken by him. We bought a wall fireplace that was a display that he was discontinuing. He said it would be taken down and wrapped up until we were ready for him to install it. It took a couple of months before we were ready for installation. When our contractor went in to talk to Jerry he found out that the fireplace was still in the showroom being used as a display. The fireplace is set in a corner cabinet which we decided to buy before the delivery day. On delivery day he wanted to charge $200.00 to deliver it to the house. This cabinet is two pieces equaling to 7 feet tall. Each piece is about 3 feet wide and 13 inches deep. (remember it is a corner piece. Each piece is less than 20 pounds). Not heavy at all. We decided to carry it out ourselves. It had to be taken apart which took Jerry 20 minutes. When Jerry came to install it he increased the installation fees with some lame excuse. He worked so slow it took him half the day to reassemble it. Our contractors were in the house while Jerry was installing the fireplace. Jerry was so rude to our contractors. What Jerry didn't know was our contractors are our friends. They had to do some of the work because Jerry kept complaining about what had to be done. We tried to get someone else to do the work before Jerry was to come out but no one had the time to do it in our time frame. We were stuck with Jerry. One of the fireplace companies asked us who was doing the work, we told them. They made a "oooh " response that we knew we had an issue. We called Jerry after the installation because the knob that adjusts the flame didn't work (it worked when we paid for it). He reminded us it was a floor model. He told me off and never fixed it. I have been acquainted with Jerry's for some time, over 20 years. I bought my first free standing wood burner from him years ago and it served us for many years. Due to government restrictions and life style changes we got away from wood burning for a few years but I always missed the natural heat from a fireplace. Last year we researched gas insert units and decided to go in that direction. I have to say in between time two of my neighbors, upon my recommendation have used Jerry for chimney maintenance for over ten years and they have never kicked anything negative back to me. Upon committing to the gas insert we shopped around and found ourselves back with Jerry. We visited the show room which was pretty well laid out and the gal there was very helpful. There was no hard sell involved and we looked at a variety of units that we could make work. Due to code changes and other issues that were explained we needed to redo the liner in our chimney. Not something I was happy with but needed to be done. The application of gas over conventional wood burner stove made it necessary. The conversion to gas was also a little bit of a surprise, sticker shock. But with all said and done trying to do it myself would have been a disaster, and I'm pretty handy around tools and do it yourself. Jerry's crew made short work of the installation , clean in and clean out. Made it look easy like most professionals do. So easy: that's why home owners get into trouble they look at the trades guys and say hey I could have done that ?? So here I am over a year later having enjoyed one winter with my new stove without the storage of wood, rats in the wood pile, lumping wood into the house and ashes up to my elbows. Was the project cheap, no, but in the grand scheme of home ownership small potato's. The only thing I still miss is the hypnotic sound of a wood burning stove but I'll survive. So in a nutshell I'm happy with all that Jerry has done for me over the years. Our contacts have been few but pleasant and professional. He's thorough, neat, and knows his stuff. Do you like relentless efforts to upsell you something you don't want? Do you like people who ignore what you say and assume things that are not true? Do you love it when people refuse to answer questions? Do you like being threatened with physical violence? (To be fair, I called him a f-ing a-hole, but he WAS being a total f-ing a-hole.) If you answered all of these questions "yes," Jerry is your guy. If not, steer clear. I went to ask about getting a simple gas log for my mom's fireplace. From the instant I walked in, I was getting the hard sell that I should buy a direct-vented gas insert. Those are better and with the right arguments he might have persuaded me, but Jerry was dishonest and unhelpful in his efforts to convince me. When I said I thought my mom's house was built in the 30s, he immediately said that the chimney would be unlined and asked it if had been inspected recently. I said it was checked out and cleaned about a year ago and probably hadn't been used since. It was also inspected when my mom bought the house about 15 years ago. The chances that both failed to notice an unlined chimney-contrary to code as long as there has been a fire code-is exactly 0%. Nonetheless, all further discussion by Jerry was based on the obviously false assumption that the chimney had never been lined. Jerry proceeded to point out that because installing a log would require lining the chimney, which is fairly expensive for a two-story house, only a crazy person would spend all that money installing a log and not spend the modest additional amount for an insert. Plus, he explained an insert would be highly efficient at warming the room, whereas a log, would have 0% efficiency. Inserts are fairly efficient and logs, with the damper locked open, are not, but 0% seems unlikely. Then Jerry told me that he thought it might cost more than $1000 to bring a gas line to the fireplace. I told him I didn't see how it could be so expensive to bring the line about 15 feet from the existing (unused) floor furnace, so Jerry explained that the floor furnace was almost certainly supplied by a line incapable of providing gas to both the floor furnace and the fireplace. I said that my mom would be happy to have the floor furnace removed, but Jerry said that wasn't possible in a room with no other heat. I haven't found any code prohibiting removing a heating appliance from a room without heat, but I guess it's possible. Jerry said the capacity of a gas line is calculated based on the diameter of the line and the distance from the meter and that calculations start from a gas line length of 60 feet and go down as the appliance furthest from the meter gets further away. Most of that is true, but the code allows for higher capacity if the longest pipe run is less than 60 feet and no gas appliance in my mom's house is more than 30 feet from the meter. Unless somebody ran the pipes in circles, the pipe length is well under 60 feet. Jerry simply refused to believe me about the distance of the appliances from the meter. So, Jerry was planning to run a pipe all the way to the meter, which he assumed was a long way. He imagined that the house had a 3/4" trunk line with a 1/2" branch line going to the floor furnace and decided that would be inadequate to supply the floor furnace and a gas log. In fact, Jerry determined that the gas appliances already in the house drew more BTUs than his assumed 3/4" gas trunk line could supply, something missed by my mom's home inspector. Even if that were true, Jerry would only be running about 20 feet of pipe since the meter is pretty close to the fireplace, but Jerry wasn't interested in actual distances. So, trying desperately to get useful information about costs out of Jerry, I decided to ask him to tell me how much it would cost to connect a gas line if: (1) there was adequate service to the floor furnace for both appliances and he only had to run about 15' of pipe, (2) if he had to run a new line back to the trunk line, and (3) if he had to run a line all the way to the meter. Jerry refused to answer the first question. I said I was wasting my time. He agreed. I started to walk out and turned and asked why he couldn't answer a simple f-ing question. I repeated the question. He refused to answer. He asked something like what my problem was. I said he was being a f-ing a-hole and walked out. He followed me and told me he thought that I needed to "back up" what I said about him. I said no, that I'm a big wuss and that I took it back. He said he didn't want to show I'm a wuss and that I needed to back up what I said because I'd insulted him. I said I was sorry, but that I wasn't going to "back up" anything and walked to my car. When I was backing out of my parking space, I saw he had followed me most of the way to my car. As I drove away I started to think about how isolated a place his store is and that it wouldn't be a bad place for Jerry to dispose of a body. Don't go there. read more
