I called Dave Montgomery and mom who is 86 year old secretary insured that her son would take care of my job... They came by (Dave had a broken foot) on his skooter inspected my fireplace at no charge. Ordered the parts (it took a few weeks) an installed today. We had a chimney fire -- a very scary thing!! -- right after a so-called reputable chimney sweep took our $100 and 'cleaned' the chimney. What that guy really did was just take our money and leave the creosote buildup. In the aftermath of that fire, we discovered that our fireplace, which appeared to be made of brick, was actually made of pre-cast concrete. And even worse -- the heat from that chimney fire was so intense that it broke the insulation plate. The insurance inspector took one look and condemned our chimney. The city code enforcement officer came out and took a look; he agreed with the insurance inspector. We were ordered to tear it down. Enter Dave Montgomery who not only gave us the best quote, but was everything you want in a contractor. He showed up, on time. He did a superb job of demolition and then rebuilt our fireplace and chimney with the Real Thing.... brick, not concrete. And every day, before he left, he cleaned up after himself. The end result is beautiful. He included an air inlet that we can open and close that allows air from outside into the firebox (now I don't have to have an open window letting cold air into my house just to enjoy a cheery fire.) The materials used were first-rate. The job he did was first-rate. It's been a while, and it still looks gorgeous and functions perfectly. David and his team are great. I had a fireplace that I started to demo and realized I was in over my head. I looked on yelp for a masonry company and D Montgomery popped up. I contacted the company and had a free consultation scheduled for the next day. David came out, inspected, and gave me a quote. Whenever I'm having contracted work done, I always play the guessing game of how much the project will cost. For this project, I guessed around $1,500 including material/ labor/ dumping/ etc. Normally my ideal price is a bit under what I actually get quoted - not true with D Montgomery. He quoted me $1,450 for everything and said it would take 2 days. Wow! That was a first. David came in the next day, spent about 12 hours knocking it out (with a very small lunch break at 1). The craftsmanship was incredible and the final project turned out great. So great that I decided to have him come back and do another masonry project for me. David took the time to prep properly and ensure my house wasn't damaged during the fireplace rebuild. Not a single scratch to be found. He also cleaned up so well, you wouldn't have guessed there was brick and mortar everywhere just an hour earlier. Bottom line: If you need masonry work done, look no further. I had used Dave's services to inspect our chimney last year. He was on time and did a good job and did not try to hustle me into any unnecessary cleaning like most other guys were doing (others were saying they need to clean before they can inspect!). So I give him 10 stars for being honest and integral in his hard day's work. I have seen some poor reviews about the lady who picks up the phone. What most say is kind of true, and she is not your everyday "receptionist" kinda girl. But I fail to understand the basis of the poor reviews. She seems like a nice old lady and this seems to be a family owned business and not some corporate office where they are ready to bill you even for the minutes you stay on the phone with them. So I would show a lot more patience while talking to her on the phone, and help her out so eventually Dave can come by and do his swell work. Remember that its Dave who is providing you with the final value added service, and not the lady who is just there to take down notes and convey it to Dave. We found this company through Yelp and I'm very happy to say that we weren't disappointed. Dave and his team were very easy to work with. Our home inspector when we bought the house told us we'd probably have to have the chimney torn down so that's what I called D. Montgomery Mason about. Dave came out and inspected it and found that we'd be able to repair the chimney instead. Woohoo! He did a great job of explaining what needed to be done and how they would go about doing it. He and his team came out and did a fantastic job. They were quick, efficient, and cleaned up after themselves. They also did an excellent job of matching the look of the brick that they had to replace. I also had Dave look at some work we wanted to do with our storage building, and again I was very impressed. We've used Dave and his crew for a handful of different jobs over the past 15 years or so. In house #1, he put in a brick landing and steps in our backyard leading down to a patio. He also built a planter box down the side of our driveway. We were thrilled with the work! He also properly installed the spark arrestor on the top of the chimney after it blew off in a storm (uh yea, that wasn't good.. it had been "installed" by the previous homeowner.. a ten pound piece of flying metal isn't a good thing..). In house #2, he redid the entire front porch. It turned out great! Beyond our expectation! When we bought house #3 (aka The Dump), the family room had one big wall entirely of brick. It was total overkill. The brick was also black with soot. Dave jack hammered part of the wall off, then finished off the edge where the fireplace is. His work perfectly complemented the room and what once was overkill, is now a nice fireplace that fits the room. We have Dave come out every year to inspect and clean our chimney. He always shows up with his upbeat and friendly, yet professional, personality and leaves everything clean and tidy. read more

A couple of years ago we had David add new masonry stairs and walkway in our back yard. David and his crew did a great job. A few months ago, after making several repairs on a front yard fence over the years, adjacent to our driveway, I decided to try to get bids on replacing the fence. I found that my biggest problem was not the fence but my neighbor who refused to allow any contractor on his property to do this. His property was a couple of feet below my property, therefore it would be impossible not to replace the dry rotten 4X4's embedded in contract on his side. Recently to try to keep the fence from falling I installed 3-8 ft iron stakes on his side of the fence to help to keep the fence from falling. When my neighbor discovered these stakes he pulled them out of the ground and threw them over the fence into my driveway at the same time I was in the area of the driveway with a tech from Xfinity. Fortunately he didn't hit any of us. The sheriff was called and came out 2 times to try to rectify the situation. Bottom line my neighbor said he would not allow any contractor on his side to repair or replace the fence. So I knew that the fence would have to be either repaired or replaced from my side of the property. I had the idea that maybe using "L" brackets anchored in my driveway adjacent to the fence might be the solution. I had talked to several fence contractors about this but I thought I might need somebody like David. He told me that using "L" brackets anchored in the concrete driveway to support the fence along with splicing in good wood to overcome the dry rot especially in the 4X4's, might do the job. The bottom line is that he did a terrific job of overcoming all of the obstacles--including my neighbor--and doing all the repairs from my side of the property. Very satisfied using D Montgomery Masonry and have recommended him to my friends. I've used D Montgomery twice. Once in Feb 2014 & just recently Jan 2019. Both times, David took care of my fireplace. Don't let 'masonry' in the company name make you think David only works on masonry fireplaces. He knows all fire places and inspected and cleaned my zero clearance or pre-fab steel fireplace. David's prices are very reasonable. I called a competitor found on Yelp and they charge $220 just to come out to the house and inspect. When I called David for a fireplace inspection, I let him know he did work for me back on 2014. He said he would come out and take a look at my fireplace. After he inspected my fireplace and found no issues (it wasn't used after his last inspection) he told me no charge. Can you believe that! Finally, when calling David, don't be surprised if an older receptionist answers the phone and doesn't seem to know much about the chimney sweep business. Dave is does good work, is on or under his time estimate, gives the cheapest estimate around, and is helpful in every other way he can be too. I can't imagine using anyone else for a chimney removal. While doing my chimney he checked my roof for leaks, my downspouts, and helped rig a sump pump for my basement. It is rare to find this level of service. read more

I am a real estate agent with over 27 years experience. Dave Montgomery is my go to source for chimney and fireplace inspections and repairs and has been for the past 10 years. I did once have an experience where he was not familiar with a certain odd flue tile used in the Concord area some years ago. With that exception, all of his inspections have been right on, his bids to correct reasonable and his repair work timely. One reviewer complained about the person who makes his appointments -- that she was not as customer oriented as he would have liked. Dave is a good man and a hard worker. He performed a fireplace inspection for me top to bottom as well as educated me on the ins and outs of my fireplace. In addition to that I had some other masonry projects in the back of my mind that I am planning for 2017 that I discussed with him. His prices are very reasonable for a masonry worker and he lets you know exactly what to expect and what pricing will look like. I highly recommend him if you are cost conscious and need a good masonry/fireplace company. Some of the negative reviews on him have indicated that he's difficult to get ahold of. He's a 1-2 man shop and his number rings his cell phone. If you are unable to get him the first time, call again and/or leave a voicemail or two. After you make first contact he's easy to communicate with with texting. It took me a second call to get him and after that had had me scheduled in on his calendar. read more

We had a 40-year old fireplace in which the concrete plates covering the sides and back of the firebox had cracked in a couple of places. Our general contractor was doing some work near the fireplace and recommended that we get it replaced or stop using it. We called Dave, talked with his lovely mom and made an appointment for the same day. Dave came by to look at the fireplace, patiently answered our questions and explained how he could replace the cracked plates. He ordered the parts for us and installed them when they arrived a few weeks later. Our fireplace looks like new, and we feel safe using it again. Dave was great to work with and did a fantastic job! We are going to use him for the regular fireplace inspections and chimney cleaning in the future, too. Dave came out to our house today to give us a second opinion on another service's claims about our "unsafe" chimney. Dave was very thorough, he even went into our attic to look at the chimney from there. He didn't find any of the issues that the other company supposedly found. He said we only need minor repairs and that our fireplace would be safe to use today if we wanted to! The other place claimed we needed thousands of dollars of repair work done and that our fireplace was unsafe to be used until the repairs were complete. I am very glad we got a second opinion and Dave explained everything to me in detail about how chimneys work, what issues are present, and he didn't try to fleece us like the other place apparently attempted to do. David was great! I determined I most likely just needed a chimney cleaning (as opposed to an inspection - he does those too) so I followed a referral from my real estate agent and made an appt. He arrived exactly on time and before the sweep, he inspected the chimney inside and out to confirm everything looked sound. I called Dave because I wanted to clean my chimney for the first time in my new house so I could have a nice fire going for this winter. Dave came out took a quick look and said that my chimney was actually clean! He even saw a flaw in my fireplace, as the previous owners must have broken a part that did not make it safe for me to even have a fire (that bummed me out), but he stuck around and explained what was needed to get done should I want to get a fire going. And even closed the area in my chimney that was locked opened from the repvious owners letting cold air in my house. I appreciated his honesty in letting me know that my fireplace 1. did not need cleaning and 2. warned me that it would not be a good idea to have a fire and to seek professionals that could get my fireplace up to code. I tried to even give him some money for his trouble of coming out and he politely refused it. Should I ever get my chimney up and running and need to clean it I would definitely call Dave again. BTW, if you phone there is a lady that answers his calls, she doesn't answer stating the business name so you will have to ask " is this D. Montgomery Masonry." Dave is an awesome guy. He came out to do a free inspection and checked everything out and told me that there were no major issues. Told me how to fix the minor problems and directed me to other businesses in the area that could help me out. We called dave after a recommendation from a friend who was also very pleased by his modifications on their fireplace. After looking at our ugly-ass fireplace for 20 years, we decided to do something about it by adding a marble hearth and mahogany mantle. The first step was to get Dave out and come up with a plan. He walked us through what should be done and what to expect when we started demoishing. About a month later we hired him to to the demo and rebuild. He demolished the entire chimney facade inside the house, old ugly-ass surround and ugly-ass hearth down to wallboard and concrete. He then built us a red brick base for the marble surround. He would have built the entire thing out if we were using tiles but since we were using slab marble, he didn't want to do that work. Marble is somewhat fragile and he didn't want to be liable for it if it cracked upon installation. We'll get the marble guys to do that part. So, anyway. He got in and out as planed without any problems and left the place clean. We're going to have a beautiful fireplace soon and a lot of credit goes to Dave. read more

David is great! We recently bought our house and wanted to ge the chimney inspected before we used it. I had DNA Chimney come out and they said there was a problem but it sounded suspicious, so we wanted a second opinion, My realtor recommended David who is a third generation Mason. Since he builds chimney, he has a great understanding of what he is looking at and can explain it so that even a novice like myself can understand.
