Steve came to check out my Heat and Glow fireplace very quickly after I contacted him. He showed up and diagnosed the long standing problem in a short time. We ordered the valve and he came back the same day the part was delivered to make the repair.Great service at a fair price. As a business owner of a 43 year old service company I highly recommend American Chimney. read more

Has since returned on several occasions. No other issues and will continue to go to Steve for my service needs.

Steven came by as promised, on time, and knew exactly what needed to be done to fix our Lennox gas fireplace. He inspected, cleaned the pilot, which wasn't staying on, then cleaned the burner as well. The service was professional and very clean, also I appreciated how he walked me through the instructions on properly using the fireplace, since I haven't used a gas fireplace much before. Thanks Steven! read more

I called to see if someone could help with our gas fireplace. Admittedly I tried turning on the pilot but had no luck. When I called I spoke to Alisa and before she even scheduled someone to come out she asked if I wanted her to walk me through it as she said there is a little trick with the brand I have. She was so patient with me and after a few attempts the pilot came on! Alisa's main concern was to help and she saved me some money from someone coming out to tell me I am an idiot! If I ever need services performed on the fireplace I will for sure call American Chimney and Alisa! read more

Never finished the job. Upped the price once at the job site. Tried to get another $200 out of me to complete the job, a simple fix of a wall switch. Wrote a check at the time of service and it took almost a month and many calls/texts to get a receipt. His office person who he had contact me was belligerent, hurling insults. Very unprofessional. Buyer beware. read more

Still our first call when we have any problems with our fireplace. Steven is friendly, competent, and honest. Our fireplace would go out after about 30 mins and keep turning itself off and on. Steven gave it a cleaning and had to pull the entire thing out to clean out the pilot. Now it works perfectly. He had floor coverings and cleaned up before he left. Oh, and he's also friendly and explains what he's doing. He does take his time to make sure it is right, so he usually runs late with appointments, but let's us know in advance. read more

Steven exceeded my expectations when he removed a 30+year old Lopi stove. The stove is large and heavy. He methodically pulled it out of my fireplace, tied and lifted it, and wheeled it onto his truck. All safety measures followed. My floors and doors were protected. All surfaces and fireplace were vacuumed. He is pleasant and professional. His fee was more than fair. I fully recommend his services. read more

Made and appointment with Steven for 9am on a Saturday. Canceled all our plans and took everything off the Chimney to get ready for him to come look at it and clean it. He never showed up. No phone call. Nothing. We called and no answer. This is very unprofessional of this company. We will be going elsewhere. We have also called other business to get quotes and it seems like Steven was over priced compared to others. If you want someone reliable this is not the place for you. read more

My wife and I just bought a place, but prior to moving in, we ordered a chimney inspection. Our realtor recommended going with American Chimney Service. The day of our appointment, Steven kept calling our realtor letting us know that he was running a little late due to crazy 880 rush hour traffic (that was the only available time I was available to be at the property - my fault). Steven came prepared and ready to work. After explaining every little detail; from how the chimney functions, what's safe, recommendations, etc, he went on to clean the chimney and do a further inspection. Luckily, everything was good and the fireplace was spotless when he was done. He did a great job making sure debris and dust stayed with in the fire place, and he also stayed relatively clean through the whole process. Steven is the type of guy that likes to talk and explain things very thoroughly, which is really good when you're paying for some one to give you a report. He also removed an unsafe gas line free of charge and wrote a note stating what part I needed to buy in order to make it safe. I couldn't be happier with the service he provided! read more

Steven Lewis came in my cottage without a floor covering or tool bag removed fireplace cover and placed cover on my rug! I had to put down newspaper for him to put cover on. Then he asked me a lot of questions I did not have answers to about my non-working Valor fireplace. Said he needed to find a model number he did not see inside unit. Was going to call me back after his research. I contacted former owner for model number and emailed number to him next day, but never heard from him again. He did not answer my call backs. I paid him $175 for nothing. He ripped me off! read more

Called a few times, left messages. He finally answered once, said he was going to come by. Never came. Never heard from him again after calling and leaving messages. Moved onto another company. Sounds like he needs a secretary to take his appointments and returning calls. read more

I've had great experiences with American Chimney services for a few years now. They are professional and do a great job. They also do a great job with communication and follow up. They did a great job on some repairs and also come out once a year to do a thorough maintenance. They did give me a discount for being a returning customer. read more

My tenant, who is VERY fussy, called American Chimney Service to clean and repair a fireplace that had a glass insert. He said they were very efficient, put down blankets so that the rug wouldn't get dirty, and did an amazing job of cleaning and replacing gaskets and glass. He said he rated Steven a 5-star and will definitely keep using him in the future to do the fireplace cleaning. I will make sure I use him in my other rentals as well and will refer him should someone need fireplace or chimney service. read more

We had Steve from American Chimney come and he swept the chimney and tuck-pointed the firebox. Very professional and friendly and the place is spotless now that he is done. He had to dismount the fireplace doors and pull out the heat exchanger and he cleaned the bras fireplace doors as well, which I did not expect. They also did the inspection and cleaning when we bought the house 5 years ago, and came well recommended then. We will definitely be having them back. read more

I can not say enough good things about American Chimney Service, Steve, his work ethic, and the wonderful results of our new gas fireplace! Steve walked us through every step of the process, was so easy to work with, and really cares about what he does. We had a non-functioning wood burning fireplace and wanted a gas insert, needed a little repair done to chimney, and then we wanted a new brick face on the fireplace itself. American Chimney Service can do it all! Plus, after we had the brick face put in, Steve noticed something that HE wasn't quite happy with, and asked if he could redo the brick (after it had already been laid) so that it looked just right! Most contractors would have just moved on, but he really wants his customers happy and for his work to be perfect. If you need chimney/fireplace work done, American Chimney Service is the way to go! read more

Hi Steve, Thank you for inspection chimneys for me! So far you are the only inspector that I know that will clean the flue and put a camera up the flue to look inside. This is most helpful for an inspection. Your cleaning that you perform is so clean that it does not dirty the room. read more

I had another chimney inspection company tell me that I needed over $4k of work done on my chimney, so I had American Chimney Service come by for a second opinion. Steven did a very professional inspection of my fireplace and chimney and said that it was okay to use and could use a sweet/cleaning down the road. I would defiantly use American Chimney Service again and may have them install a wood stove insert in my fireplace. Thanks Steven! read more

Steve Lewis was a godsend. He was able to resolve a gas fireplace issue that a so called expert was unable to do after three visits! Initially, I ordered parts for my fireplace through a company in Hayward. Little did I know that they only serviced fireplaces they, themselves have installed. Fortunately, they recommended Steve Lewis. He installed the parts and now my fireplace is working beautifully. I asked Steve if he would look at my son's fireplace in Menlo Park. Long story short, Steve was able to diagnose the problem and was able to repair the fireplace in an hour when another company made three different trips before giving up! As far as I am concerned, Steve is my go to guy for fireplace repairs. read more

Steve Lewis of "American Chimney Services, LLC" based in Hayward, CA, walked me through a series of steps to re-light the pilot light on my gas fireplace insert. As our fireplace is a much older model and we have never needed to restart the pilot, we were very concerned that there would be a continuous gas flow - obviously a potentially dangerous situation in our eyes! As soon as I called Steve, he slowly walked me through determining what type and model we had and moved me through steps necessary....all of this while on his mobile phone (hands-free of course) and driving! As a former VP of a major Bay Area Financial Institution, I know a simple "Thank you" via Yelp is well deserved, most certainly for Steve Lewis. Our family is ever so grateful to Steve of "American Chimney Services, LLC" - as well as George of "Sweep Clean, Clean Sweep Chimney & Dryer Vent Service" of San Pablo - who provided his referral to Steve - they both are the ONLY professional chimney, fireplace, Dryer & Vent repair businesses to call servicing the entire San Francisco Bay Area.! read more

Great service and work. Definitely recommend this company. When all other companies tried to put me out weeks in advance when I had a special situation this company came through and went above and beyond. read more

Steven was referred to me by another chimney repair company that doesn't do metal fireplaces. We had to play phone tag for 2 weeks but he kept up his end until we connected and then he was so generous with his time in listening to my problem and suggesting solutions I could try myself before setting up a service call and talking about it with me further after I did what he suggested. He offered to review photos I could take of the problem and to continue helping via phone without any compensation. I had already eliminated some of the possible sources of the persistent air leaks I was having and his suggestions helped me eliminate several other possibilities. Now I have to decide whether to live with the problem until the weather warms up or launch a full-scale investigation to try to fix it. Either way, I was so impressed with Steven's kindness and helpfulness that I wanted to share my story on Yelp. If I do go ahead, there is nobody else I would rather have do the work. read more

Steve was great in installing/converting our wood burning fireplace into gas logs, we really have enjoyed it over the years. Last fall Steve came by to service our fireplace, upon inspection he discovered we needed a repair. Fine! He said he would order the part could be a week or 10 days at best/ will coincide with a project in our neighborhood. I have called on numerous occasions, husband has called, just s few days ago, Steve's call dropped. My husband tried calling to never reach him. We asked if you have the part, you aren't calling back let us find someone to complete our repairs, totally insane to not return your customer's call. I am very disappointed in what was I believe a good company plus we were trying to support a small business. read more

There is no better!! I just recommended American Chimney Service to a friend so thought I would write a review. Steve and his company has kept our chimney clean (and our house safe) for years. Steve's recommendation to earthquake retrofit our chimney was one of the best investments we could have made on our house. Steve's regular cleanings and inspections provide peace of mind when we are using our fireplace. Also good to know we are better protected during an earthquake. They are professional and prompt. Its amazing how they can keep a messy job so clean. Its all good with American Chimney! read more

Steve came out to inspect and clean our new fireplace. He's very thorough and explains everything he plans to do. He provided photos of future work we need to have done and it's urgency. Steve was very friendly and pleasant to have work on our home. I strongly recommend him to anyone. read more

Update: 1/2: They called and promised the report by the 23rd, still no report. Their VM has been full for days. 12/19: They came out to do the review and then 1) never sent the report (been two weeks) 2) failed to return several phone calls asking for report --that was promised in 48 hours 3) never answered phone again. Quite a bummer since the receptionist really impressed me with her knowledge of the industry and professionalism. read more

This review is long overdue. Steve repaired our gas fireplace in early 2017 and he did a wonderful job! He replaced a broken switch and then meticulously cleaned the fireplace. He spent an hour vacuuming the dust and debris out and then even painted the inside, where it was discolored. After Steve was finished, our fireplace looked brand new. And it ran much more efficiently too! We appreciate Steve's hard work, attention to detail, and fair pricing. We plan to use Steve again in the future for our fireplace maintenance. read more

I called constantly and left massages over a three week period and NEVER had a call back.

Excellent service. Very professional and equally knowledgeable. As a field supervisor for a major general contractor, I know when a person is the master of their craft. Steve was not only familiar with our neighborhood, but also with all local building codes! read more

Steve was wonderful to work with! He is serious, honest and very conscientious. We couldn't be happier with him and his work.

Smart yet slow. Steven diagnosed my fireplace problem well - I think. Yet has not returned any phone calls for weeks now. It would be okay to call me and say he has no time to fix my problem, yet will not take this step. Leaves us stranded not knowing what to do. read more

Steve came over to look at my 2 fireplaces which I wanted to put new gas logs in. Seems like a super nice and honest guy. However, he told me I would receive a quote within 2 days. It has been almost 3 weeks with me checking in several times and I have yet to receive anything. Maybe he's too busy, but I just wasted 3 weeks and am going to have to move on. read more

Steve is amazing! I had problem finding a chimney cleaning service before my urgent oversea trip. But Steve made his trip to my unit during his busy Holiday schedule! He is polite, professional, and accommodating. We are so happy to have found him, and recommend him HIGHLY. I will call for his help again and again in the future! read more

I initially had Steve do a cleaning of my fireplace insert in spring of 2014. He was pleasant, polite, thorough in doing the job. Additionally, he left the fireplace as clean if not cleaner than it was before he came. Thus, it was natural that I asked him to come back just recently when the remote on my insert was not working correctly. After cleaning all the components very thoroughly (again) he determined that it was simply 'a loose wire' and maybe old batteries that needed to be replaced. Voila, everything worked perfectly once again! I would recommend Steve most highly to anyone needing help with their insert, or any other fireplace/chimney related job. He does TERRIFIC work! read more

Steve put my gas fireplace insert in two weeks ago and I am very pleased with his professionalism. I knew nothing about fireplace inserts and he took his time and explained my options. He left brochures and online information where I could research. We discussed several options and after looking at three designs, I finalized my decision. I love my new fireplace! read more

Showed up on time. The technician was polite clean-cut and seemed honest. Fixed my fireplace and now it works great. I highly recommend American chimney service and would definitely use them again. read more

I was referred to American Chimney by another chimney sweep who said Steven is THE person to work on gas fireplace inserts. It's true! Ours had been neglected for at least 3 years--since we bought the house. He gave it an incredibly thorough cleaning (I had no idea how many interior components had to be taken out, cleaned, and later reassembled.) He laid down blankets and used special vacuum equipment so that our living room remained spotless. And afterwards he showed me how all the interior controls work. He also did a visual inspection of our chimneys from the outside, and told me how to identify structural concerns in the future. I will hire him for yearly maintenance in the future. read more

Found recommendation for this particular business from Consumers Checkbook, an affiliate of Consumer Reports. He was recommended highly by it and I concur. Steve returned my initial call promptly to set up an appointment. His price quoted for a cleaning and inspection was the most competitive of the 3 others I called. He was prompt to arrive on time for the appt. He was EXTREMELY careful of my living room furniture, fixtures and carefully covered everything to avoid dust, etc. from his cleaning process. His written report emailed to me was the most thorough and professional I have ever received for this type service. His recommendation to replace spark arrestor screen was spot on, and his cost and installation fee were reasonable. He followed up without my prompting when the part came in and scheduled appt for installation. I have already recommended him to two of my neighbors and will definitely have him back for my next inspection. read more

After making several attempts to get someone to service my fireplace, because if you did not buy it from that particular business they don't have an interest to help, I finally was able to get someone to help. That someone was American Chimney Service, I left a message with their phone service and in minutes I received a return call to set an appointment. When the service person, Steve, arrived he was punctual, professional, well presented and clean. Steve asked if he could put on shoe clothes to protect my floors, nice thought and appreciated. He knew a little about my design, but he knew who to contact and get the necessary information about my fireplace without issue and in seconds. He then diagnosed the problem and repaired it at the estimate he offered for repair. I am pleased to recommend this company and will always use this company for servicing and/or replacing in the future. read more

My husband and I recently moved into a home with a gas fireplace. We'd never used one before and were reluctant to try it without an inspection and a lesson in how to use it. I called another fireplace company, and after he spoke to his parts supplier he said it sounded like a unit that would be too old to get parts for should they be needed, so he wasn't interested, but referred me to American Chimney and Steven. Steven really knows his stuff! He completely cleaned the logs, rock wool, and fire box, which were covered in dust from a previous remodel of the house before we owned it, got it working beautifully, and explained clearly and comprehensively how to turn the pilot on and off, operate the damper, and everything else we needed to know. He put down a drop cloth to protect the hearth and floor, and put cable ties along the wires for the switch/remote sensor so it would look neater. We couldn't be happier. We'll have a fire when guests come for dinner tonight! read more
