I contacted Fireplace Safety Services for my troubled fireplace and left a message about what was going on. They returned my call and told me they weren't able to work on my specific unit since it wasn't installed by them, but gave me the contact info of another company I should reach out to instead (which u did and got my issue resolved quickly). I was really impressed with this level of customer service - both the recommendation itself and the fact they left a message rather than hanging up when I didn't answer. I can't speak to their work, but I would definitely considering using them in the future due to their customer service. read more

Inept technicians -- go with another company. We have a Valor gas fireplace that started acting up (delayed ignition, sometimes went out on its own, explosive fireball within the glass). We called Fireplace Safety Services to help fix the problem and give us confidence that it was safe to use. The technician that came out did not know how to open our fireplace (despite it being a fairly common model) and asked for the manual. I accidentally handed him the French manual, and he got a little upset. Rather than asking me to look for the English manual or searching online for instructions, he just changed the batteries in the controller, turned it on/off 20 times or so, and then told me it was "probably fine". He then wrote me an invoice that said "It would be a good idea to keep English manual on hand" and charged me $330. After they left, we left the fireplace lit again for 15 minutes, and the same problems occurred (fire died on its own, then fireballed). We then had another company (Eco Tech) come out. The other company immediately identified that the chimney termination cap was broken so wind was coming into the chimney and causing our problems. They knew how to open the fireplace without a manual, and they checked everything for us to make sure there weren't any additional problems and then cleaned up the dust and glass from inside. Don't waste your time with Fireplace Safety Services. They barely knew how to service our fireplace let alone ensure it was safe to use. read more

Company has been extremely busy and first available appointment was 4-6wks out! Had almost decided to cancel and wait until next season but glad decided to wait. Hugh who came was extremely professional in helping fix our pilot light on our old gas fireplace. Timely arrival and courteous in keeping the workspace very clean and tidy. He noted our fireplace set up had not been done correctly by the previous owners but helped adjust it as best as possible and cleaning the area. Gave very helpful advice regarding the replacement logs and other materials we needed and affordable alternatives. Since fires seem to be a sensitive topic nowadays, I thought it might be a good idea to have my wood burning fireplace inspected. My realtor recommended Fireplace Safety Services as the company she uses for inspections and repairs. Hugh came out and told me the levels of inspection he would do according to what he saw. He decided to use a camera to see if there was any damage in the fireplace. He showed me the pictures and recommended not using the fireplace until I decided to fix it or install an insert. There were plenty of gaps in the mortar and this could definitely cause a fire. The company is going to send me an estimate for repairing the gaps and also an estimate for installing an insert. The price for the thorough inspection was $225 and totally worth it. If you just use your fireplace and do not know what condition it is in, it would be a good idea to have it checked out. I would have never known that my fireplace was a hazard. I also highly recommend Fireplace Safety Services as a company you can trust. read more

Can't recommend these guys more highly. We recently had a beautiful Valor Windsor Arch Fireplace installed in our Victorian apartment and it looks great!! Hugh provided us with a very reasonable estimate (much cheaper than Okells, Warm solutions and all the other companies we explored servicing San Francisco). Alex and Bryan came and did the install and were professional, courteous, paid excellent attention to detail, and managed a tricky work around for the gas line which we were convinced wouldn't fit with the unit. I hired these guys to fix two chimneys in my 1880 SF Victorian. At first I didn't like that they charged for the estimate, but even if I didn't hire these guys, it was totally worth it. They spent almost an hour assessing the job, and gave me all kinds of useful information. I even handed them an estimate given by another company, and they came back with a lower price. Besides, the cost of the estimate went towards the final bill. The other company wanted a %50 deposit... Fireplace Safety Services only wanted %20. They were prompt, courteous, polite, and finished the job in 2 1/2 days, just like they said they would. They covered up everything so that soot wouldn't get the furniture dirty. When the invoice came there was no surprises. Upon payment they said to be sure to call if there are any problems so that they can come back out to address it. "we stand behind our work" seems to apply here. What more could you ask for? read more

I felt comfortable with Hugh and his crew the moment I met them as it was obvious to me that he knew what he was doing. My three fireplaces in my two unit Victorian were decorative for a reason. I decided to replace two to become working gas fireplaces after Hugh carefully explained what needed to be done. Really happy with the quality of the work from this company, as well as the service from beginning to end. People should know that this business is a shame. It's owned by the owner of London Chimney Services and he doesn't want people to know because he's trying to scam the community. He has a horrible reputation as "owner" at London and if people knew he owned Fireplace Safety Services too, they wouldn't go to them either. The sad thing is the people who work at both companies are great and are the ones that carry the businesses and their reputation for their work, but the owner has them competing against each other for work to ensure he gets the bids whether through London or Fireplace Safety. Brilliant service from Lisa in the office, and extremely professional response from Hugh, who did our pre-sale home inspection. He took tons of pictures and did a really detailed estimate, giving us options for fixing the many problems we were facing. We then hired Fireplace Safety Services to do the work (new insert, significant masonry repair, hood, wall build up at roof level, gas log installation, etc.) The fellow who did most of the work was courteous, prompt and well-informed. I never for one minute thought there was a problem with any of the work they were doing - and I am one to worry a LOT about work being done right. I am so impressed with their quick response and strong work ethic. They clearly take pride in what they do, and it shows. I contacted this company to convert my woodburning fireplace to gas logs. Upon inspection, they found that my fireplace had serious cracks in the tiles, was a fire hazard in its present condition and needed repairs before I could use it again (either for wood or gas logs). They wrote up a formal report and itemized what was needed. Although the repairs were costly, their bid was in line with other services and I felt that they were very honest. I now have a wonderful fire going in my hearth. And I can't say enough positive things about this company. Other businesses could learn valuable lessons from the excellent professional service and fine customer care they provided me, including help and advice in choosing my logs, fitting me into their busy schedule when there was a cancellation, communicating with me and showing up on time. I was completely impressed with this company from my first contact through paying the invoice. He initial inspection was very easy to schedule. The expert came and worked very hard to put a video camera up our small chimney. Another company we had come in for an estimate said it was impossible to get the camera in there (but clearly it was possible!) He gave me some unexpected bad news about the chimney but was very patient in explaining the needed repairs. We easily scheduled the repairs. The worker arrived in the morning on time, we left him keys and he let himself in the next day to Finish. No dirt or mess at all to be found, and excellent work. Hired them to clean and inspect two fireplaces, including one gas fireplace that worked only intermittently. Pro: I can't evaluate whether they did the work properly or not, but they did a good job keeping the house clean while they worked, showed up on time, left on time, had a polite, professional demeanor, and generally seemed to know what they were doing. Con: Half-hearted - well, nonexistent - job of debugging the nonworking fireplace. There are very systematic ways of isolating which parts have failed in a nonworking fireplace, but these guys didn't do anything besides vacuum it out. Didn't give an estimate for repair, didn't even try to sell me a new working insert. Just "Well, it's pretty old." ??? read more

This company was incredible! We had an old coal burning fireplace with an incredibly ugly insert. Hugh came out and accessed what could be done, recommended a new insert style, went up into our attic to make sure that everything was to code and that the new install was water tight. I highly recommend these guys. They are professional and efficient. They were great in scheduling the work, and showing up on time. It was a big job to do, total of 12 fireplaces in a 1936 San Francisco Apartment Building, they repaired the flues is with a flue reline, most fireplaces rear walls of the firebox were completely rebuilt. Without a doubt FSS is one of the most professional contractors my family has hired to work on our home, the replacement of a wood burning box with a high output gas appliance. Their prompt and honest feedback on questions proved that they know their profession. It was also great to see the boss performing the install of appliance and not just another hired hand. There's nothing wrong with giving orders to a crew, but I trust a team more where the person in charge is performing the most complex tasks.
