Need to be careful about this. I picked Darren because he's local. Previous owners somehow screwed up the functionality of my fireplace. They tore some things out so when I do have a fire, usually duraflame, some of the smoke leaks out into the room. Darren diagnosed the problem and did a custom fix, installed a smoke guard, chain screen protector; did a great job, doesn't leak anymore. The installation was smooth, and aside from a burnt out lightbulb above the flame area, it has worked wonders to heat the house for 4 winters! Fewer stars for the wait-time and attitude when the fireplace stops working. I'm writing this to update my earlier, frustrated review based on having to wait for 8 weeks to get our beautiful Mendota fireplace fixed. In short, the gorgeous fireplace worked great at heating the house for the first 4 years! When it stopped turning on this past October, I was stunned to learn that we would have to wait almost 8 weeks until Dec. 18 for an appointment with OKells to repair it. This made for a cold Thanksgiving since we use the fireplace as the main heat and don't have a furnace. It would have been really helpful if the folks at OKells could either have 1. helped us out to get if fixed sooner, given that it's the only heat source... or if it was impossible to squeeze us in sooner, 2. It would have been awesome if they had recommended one of the independent repair companies immediately, so I knew this was an option. I finally got a referral after desperately calling around for help, from Blaze Fireplace of all places, who went out of their way to give me the names and numbers of several independent companies that fix these things! So, now it's working again after having a valve replaced. (Some of my frustration comes from the fact that I personally always try to go above and beyond for people in need. I'm a teacher, and I always try to go the extra mile for my students and colleagues. I really believe in taking care of members of my community, and I wish this business had the same work ethic and a little bit of kindness, in trying to help out someone who really needs their heater to work, instead of giving me a lecture on why they can't do it any sooner.)

Inept technicians -- go with another company. We have a Valor gas fireplace that started acting up…read more(delayed ignition, sometimes went out on its own, explosive fireball within the glass). We called Fireplace Safety Services to help fix the problem and give us confidence that it was safe to use. The technician that came out did not know how to open our fireplace (despite it being a fairly common model) and asked for the manual. I accidentally handed him the French manual, and he got a little upset. Rather than asking me to look for the English manual or searching online for instructions, he just changed the batteries in the controller, turned it on/off 20 times or so, and then told me it was "probably fine". He then wrote me an invoice that said "It would be a good idea to keep English manual on hand" and charged me $330. After they left, we left the fireplace lit again for 15 minutes, and the same problems occurred (fire died on its own, then fireballed). We then had another company (Eco Tech) come out. The other company immediately identified that the chimney termination cap was broken so wind was coming into the chimney and causing our problems. They knew how to open the fireplace without a manual, and they checked everything for us to make sure there weren't any additional problems and then cleaned up the dust and glass from inside. Don't waste your time with Fireplace Safety Services. They barely knew how to service our fireplace let alone ensure it was safe to use.
