We had Randy come out to service our SPARK 88NE that was installed new by a contractor in 2015 and had never been thoroughly cleaned. We also felt the flame was too low and more blue than yellow. We bought this place in 2017 so we felt it was time we had someone check it out. Randy was on time and he spent a total of about three hours taking the fireplace apart, cleaning it, making a few adjustments and putting it back together. Total cost was just under $1,000!!! We just gulped and paid, figuring we'd gone 7 years without really touching the thing. Unfortunately, after Randy left we noticed an odd flame rising above the area where the pilot light sits. We contacted Randy and he said he'd have to call SPARK to get their feedback on the odd flame. I waited a few days and hearing nothing from Randy, I contacted SPARK myself and sent them a picture of the odd flame. SPARK replied saying everything was fine, but that Randy had improperly adjusted something and just needed to readjust it. I sent SPARK's reply to Randy and he responded saying he'd be out "on Friday" to make things right. Friday came and no Randy. I contacted him and he said there must have been a misunderstanding - there wasn't, as I had his email. He said he had another customer nearby and he was waiting on a part for that customer, so he'd contact me as soon as he had the part and was coming this way again. That was early Nivember. I heard nothing for weeks so I reached out a week ago to find out when Randy could return. I was then contacted by his partner/assistant, who informed me Randy was unfortunately in a bad accident and would probably be out of commission for several weeks. Obviously it is beyond Randy's control that he's injured and needs time to recover, but we're still shocked that after paying nearly $1,000 for three hours of service (no parts) back on October 31, 2024, there has been no real effort on the part of Kidd Fireplace to make things right for us. We've had to do all the contacting, research with the manufacturer, etc. We've been very patient as well. Sadly there seem to be very few NFI Certified technicians here in Northern California so Randy Kidd is literally the only game, an unreliable game at that, in town. read more

Most people, when they have a gas insert installed, have it installed into their existing fireplace leaving the surround and hearth in place. We wanted our installation to look like a new construction gas fireplace with no visible evidence of the old brick fireplace - no brick surround and no hearth. We decided we wanted a Mendota unit and found a company that sold that brand. They told us that what we wanted to do could not be done without entirely removing our existing fireplace and starting new. We then found Kidd Fireplace and Kevin said they could work with us to get us what we wanted while meeting all the applicable codes and manufacturer installation requirements. Kevin was able to clearly and thoroughly explain what needed to be done prior to their installation work. We designed the work ourselves and hired construction workers with the skills to get it done: someone who could work with metal studs and HardieBacker cement board, and a sheetrock taper. We had to demolish some of the fire brick inside the firebox to provide the necessary clearances and build an elevated platform to get the insert up higher. (The demolition work inside the firebox is normally done by Kidd but we did it because it would have been difficult for Kidd to do it with the opening constricted by the metal studs.) The installation went well. Jason and Terry worked hard and continuously for about eight hours and got the job done in one day. They did a neat job of demolishing as little as possible of our sheetrock interior walls to route the gas and electrical lines. We have been using our fireplace for more than a year now and are totally satisfied with our insert and our experience with Kidd Fireplace. read more

I'm very happy with the customer service and product from Kidd. I ordered both a gas insert (Jotul) and a gas log set from Kidd in late February 2021. Randy was clear that there is a supply chain delay in receiving both inserts and log sets, and that the delay is particularly long and unpredictable for the gas log sets. Our insert arrived within the time frame that Randy had stated (early May 2021), and was installed by the technicians to whom Kidd had referred us. We were unhappy with the size and fit of the surround plate for the insert, and Randy took it to a metal shop to adjust it for us. The first attempt resulted in a broken plate, so Randy had another plate made for us there. He painted it the custom color that we had specified and returned to install it himself. It looks great and we are very happy with how Randy would not stop until we were satisfied. Back in 2005 I purchased a gas fireplace insert and installation from Randy. Although we have loved and enjoyed it for many years, there was something troubling about part of the installation. I didn't realize it a the time, but some crucial mounts were not installed which should have been. Flash forward to now, I had Randy come back out for some service. He commented on the missing parts, and seemed surprised to learn it was he who had installed it. He agreed to try to replace them, but never followed up. After reaching out to him a couple of times, he so much as told me I was on my own to figure it out because he was unable to get the needed parts. I urged him to think of another solution, as he should have installed it properly in the first place. At this point, he indicated he didn't believe he did the installation after all. We bought a Gas Insert from Kidd and had a great experience. We got estimates from all the major local places. Kidd was priced comparably. We ended up picking them because they are the only one that also does the Gas lines, and Electric. We figured, if something goes wrong it's better to have "one neck to choke". I was afraid of a scenario where the installer blames the plumber blames the electrician etc. We did not regret the decision. Something did indeed go wrong with the unit we bought (Regency U390, starter went south and wouldn't turn on), and they stood behind the work. Randy had to come out twice, and had to disassemble and rebuild the unit. He did so without complaint, and we were not charged. While I'm sure we were still under warranty it was refreshing to see them stand behind their work with no argument. I was afraid to have to wait a couple of weeks but I was offered a next day appointment at 12:00pm, not the usual "between 8:00am and 12:00pm". I hired Randy Kidd to inspect and troubleshoot my gas fireplace insert and write a brief report for warranty support purposes to the manufacturer (RH Peterson) and the reseller (eFireplaceStore.com). Randy offered to come to my home on a Sunday in exchange for a $300 cash service fee. I accepted his offer and paid him the $300 in cash on the day of the service call. Randy used a volt meter to test the batteries in my fireplaces remote control and then he attempted to light the pilot light in my fireplace with the units on/off switch and with a lighter. My fireplace would not light the pilot and Randy packed up his equipment and left my home. Randy later wrote a report stating that he had isolated the failure to within the fireplace unit and reporting the gas pressure to the unit and gas pressure through the automatic valve control system. Randy did not actual gas pressure tests on the unit in my home. Randy also reported that he was unable to take any voltage measurements on the fireplace unit because he did not have a voltmeter. He did have a voltmeter and I saw him use it and take the voltage readings from the batteries in my fireplace's remote control, but he did not use it to take any readings from my fireplace. After Randy took my payment in cash it took me 10 days of messaging him before he "found" my payment and was able to create a receipt. Based on the data I have, Randy is not honest, organized, or complete in his work and he is a problem to communicate and deal with. read more

I used Kidd Fireplace to for the purchase and installation of a wood burning insert. If I could give 2.5 stars I would. They are a very busy company and are not flexible with scheduling appointments, I encountered this when I tried to schedule the pre-installation measurements and unfortunately the follow up visits. I waited about 30 days for a installation of my unit because they were so busy. I was told it takes about 4-5 hours to install a unit. The first visit took 6 hours, and because they did not accurately measure my fire box they were unable to complete the installation. They re-attempted the installation about 2 weeks later but ran into more issues because I had an unusual fire box design which required more cutting and removed of bricks of the original fireplace. I was told a third attempt had to be made because more parts had to be ordered. I expected more follow up and communication considering I was about 5 weeks past my original installation date. After calling and talking to one of the owners the installation was completed on the third attempt. I will say these guys didn't give up, but not what I expected from a company who does this every day. I probably won't ever have a aftermarket Fireplace installed in any of my homes again because I'd hate to go through this again. Kidd Fireplace installation team are hard working guys who are polite and professional but when you spend alot of money you expect alot more reassuring and follow up that the problems will be solved in a timely manner. read more
