We had an issue where water was leaking down the chimney into our living room. A storm knocked the old chimney cap off the chimney, and the old chimney cap damaged the pool solar panels. That caused the pool solar to spray water toward the chimney. The mortar was falling apart in some places too, so water could potentially leak in through the sides of the chimney. Its surprisingly hard to find a good, reliable chimney sweep in this area. Much of the new construction doesn't have chimneys, so the supply of qualified/skilled vendors is diminishing. We received a tag from our local fire department after an unsolicited inspection (they do the annually apparently). The tag noted that our chimney did not have a damper device (a covering at the top to catch embers). So we called up Hex Chimney and asked if they could help. They knew exactly what to do. They had experience in installing these devices for us. The price they quoted was less than we anticipated. They completed the service requested on time and on budget. Had our chimney cleaned today. I was a bit worried since we hadn't used it for several years. I started out looking for someone to convert my gas fireplaces back to wood burning, and I ended up discovering all three chimneys in my house had been leaking due to age and improper fastening of my chimney hoods. I went to 2 different contractors who said my chimneys were likely rotted out and needed rebuilt. One scared me by mentioning the possibility of black mold, and both recommended chimney reconstruction, quoting me five-figure prices. Thankfully, though, I got a 3rd bid from Eli and Hex Chimney. He informed me the chimneys construction was fine. Not until he removed the existing hoods did he see that while evidence of moisture was present, there wasn't any rotting or mold. He was confident the moisture would dry out and the chimneys would be fine once fitted with new proper hoods and caps. He had the hoods custom-made and installed them so that they could be removed if needed if I wanted to later re-side my house which we discussed. The whole removal and installation process went smoothly, and Eli was always on time and pleasant to deal with. Most importantly, the amount he charged was a very reasonable four-figures instead of five! Altering dealing with him, I realized I had almost been persuaded by fear-mongering into paying for unnecessary work. We had a chimney that was leaking. We had a quote from another company for $12k, that was way out of our budget and I explained that to Sam. He said he would work with us.
