My rating should really be 4.5 stars if I had the choice. The only reason for not giving 5 stars was the LONG delay in getting the correct parts to fix my Valor Legend fireplace insert. I won't get into the details for the delay except to say that the lengthy wait (a few months) was painfully long for the entire winter season. However, the senior people at F & S ultimately did deliver, and they had the skills to fix my fireplace. This strongly contrasts with a horrible experience that I had with another fireplace repair service. During the long wait for F & S to get the necessary parts, I foolishly hired another fireplace repair service, which promised me that my problem was an easy fix with no new parts. They ripped me off with a $500+/- repair that lasted 2 weeks, and my attempts to resolve were met with no return phone calls from them. F & S IS HONEST & CAPABLE! Their repair was quite extensive and involved the replacement of some major parts that usually last far longer. One component perhaps didn't fail; however, it needed to be correctly matched with a component that did fail (that's an engineering assumption that required matched sets to work). I called F & S fireplace three years ago to work on my propane heating stove and Kevin came out. He had the problem diagnosed and we got the parts ordered right away. When the parts came in he came up and installed them and explained how to keep the stove clean and maintained. They showed up on time to replace our old fireplace insert with a newer unit. The installation fee was a flat $650. They did not want to replace the steel piping that runs from the fireplace insert to the top of the chimney, claiming it was "like new." When my family member insisted they do the full installation they were charging us for, since they were not discounting the labor at all and the new parts were ready to go, one of the installers reluctantly agreed and then told my family member he had "better shuttup." The replacement of these pipes, which were over 20 years old, only took 20 minutes. After the installation, I observed the fireplace was not level. They assured me it was just because the screen was not seated in its tongue and groove fitting on the insert correctly (which would have been their mistake). I asked them to come and fix it via email and it has been over a month without a reply. The fireplace was not level because they left a gas fitting wedged in between the tile hearth and fireplace insert. See photo. Unprofessional, unresponsive and sloppy. read more

My experience was very similar to Myra's review below. Kevin was great -- he came on time, was professional, figured out the problem quickly (dead spiders in the pipes that needed to be cleaned out) and fixed it without needing any other parts. The last company I had come out (Fireplace Element) told me I needed to pay more than $2000 and replace the system. $300 feels like a bargain by comparison and well worth fixing the fireplace. The only tricky part was setting up the appointment because they don't take calls during working hours, and then you only have a few hours after 5 to contact them to set up the appointment.
