I was walking to the subway after a really fun night out and I was feeling a little peckish. I knew I wanted some kind of handheld snack but I didn't know what I was in the mood for. I stumbled upon Jerk King and noticed they had a Jerk Chicken Sandwich Wrap ("Coleslaw, cucumber, carrots, onions, lettuce & cilantro") on the menu, which sounded just about perfect in that moment. I ordered the wrap and made a little small talk with the person serving me, and within minutes I was on my way. And although I was expecting something pretty decent, I have to say I was completely blown away by what I got. This is one amazing, delicious wrap. They loaded it up with tender, juicy pieces of super flavorful chicken, and the other components prove an ideal complement to the almost shockingly tasty meat. The whole thing is wrapped up in a fresh roti, and honestly, I was just so, so happy while I was scarfing this concoction down. Usually this is my go to delivery late night jerk spot. But recently we went in person to order at 2am. The 522 Bloor location ran out of bbq chicken so we had to walk/drive 20mins to the more west end location at 1104 Bloor st. W. We went on a Monday night and there was a worker by the name of Neja(?) Craving some Caribbean flavours and in the area, I opted to have the medium jerk chicken (which comes with rice and beans) at Jerk King this past weekend, a place I've passed by on multiple occasions but never tried out. I was very pleased and definitely think I'll have this again. This place is very small and is essentially a takeout spot. I was given a rather large portion of rice and beans, which was warm and fresh and four generous portions of fresh, come straight off the bone chicken. I opted for mild as my spice level and even that carried a kick so I reckon spicy must have a high spice level. We had two meat eaters and one vegetarian in our party. The meat eaters thoroughly enjoyed the flavor of the jerk chicken roti however felt that the chunks of potatoes were too large and too much in quantity (see picture as everyone took their leftover chunks out and placed them in a single container). The vegetarian in the group basically received an entire roti with these giant potato chunks with a very small amount of chickpeas and spinach. I do not recommend this place for vegetarians at all as you will be eating a meal of potatoes that you won't be able to eat much of because of its larger size. Overall this was not suitable for us for a family dinner as the vegetarians had little to eat other than potatoes, however the meat eaters will likely order again. read more

Recently, I went to Jerk King looking for a quick dinner before our floor hockey game. We have heard mixed reviews about this place and we thought it was worth the visit. When we entered, it's your typical mom and pop restaurant. No fancy utensils and no fancy attractions, they are here to serve up good home style Caribbean food. Of course, we ordered their Jerk Chicken on Rice as we needed some fuel before our game. The chicken was nice and tender while maintaining some of its residual heat. The coleslaw was a nice compliment to help offset the jerk spices from the chicken. The service was quite decent as the workers are very pleasant to chat with and were more than happy to give us more sauce on our rice. I'm a Real Caribbean island boy! Now it's not better then my grandmas and family food l but it's very good to me and I'm a picky eater. I think the reviews on this spot are very unfair and almost malicious. My mother does not eat from no one or no where and she liked it when I brought it home for her to eat at lunch. My dad did say the roti wasn't that good though, so it all might be based on what you get! And I Don't like Jerk Chicken at all. So I can't say it's good But the oxtail was great the rice was fantastic. And I loved the coleslaw on the side an I got the fried dumplin And the fried dumplin was Proper. The service was slow but they were probably on island time, just not a Caribbean island lol. Don't let the asian Staff get you discouraged because , the islands have plenty of asians and they cook better then most of the black people I've ate from here in this city. Don't let it's location and the fact that it's a chain, detour you. I love this place. The spicy jerk chicken w/ rice and peas is my go-to. They've done some renovations (and will soon open their dine-in section next door). The place is a lot cleaner since the renovation and the staff are much better (read: hygienic) now than a few years ago. The food taste & quality has significantly improved in the past year. The ladies working there are ever so sweet and happily obliges when I ask for extra gravy. Jerk King remains my go-to for Caribbean food in the area. Definitely check them out! read more

I absolutely love this place and franchise. I've only been disappointed once from being given the wrong uber eats order but they corrected it for me. I only recently got into Carribean food because I never really ate anything with a kick and now I'm obsessed with this food. I've tried alwyns and I was super disappointed because I've been so used to JK. My go to is jerk chicken and rice with their coleslaw. The coleslaw is my absolute favourite I've ever had. Must try!! So creamy to balance out the jerk!! One bad thing I have to mention though is when I first started eating at jerk king maybe a year ago, they had the best patties I've EVER had hands down. Sometime late ish or mid last year they completely changed their patties and they're no where near as good anymore, to the point where I went from always ordering 2 of the originals, to never ever ordering them now. A short walk from Dufferin Station this place is excellent as a stop-by for a quick eat even late into the night (usually closes around 2AM on weekdays). It's firmly a takeout joint seeing as there is only one high table seating four people and a smaller one seating two so eating in isn't an option during prime hours. Service can be slow depending on how many staff are present and lineups often extend outside. Some staff are rude and dismissive, but I don't mind since I'm usually in and out. Being a Jamaican place they offer the usual fare like Jerk Chicken, Chick Peas, Curry, and Rotis. The main appeal is, predictably, the jerk chicken - they come with rice/beans and a side of coleslaw. The jerk chicken actually isn't the best I've had (if you're really picky about it stay away) and can be little dry depending on how it's cooked, but when they get it right it's delicious. The coleslaw is also good, but be warned that's because it's slathered with mayo. It may look deceptive, but the portion sizes are pretty generous for the price - a medium combo comes at $8.50 but is very filling. I can't recommend the chicken curry as it's too salty for my tastes and the oxtail has a lot of bones too so they're both a bit overpriced in my opinion. Their location just down the street at Bathurst is more spacious and the food quality is a bit better from my experience, but I'd recommend giving both a try if you're in the area. Protip: You can mix and match and ask for any number of fried / jerk chicken in the combo. read more

The food here is very good! I had Jerk Chicken which was so deliciously spiced and done perfectly, tasty rice and peas with mild oxtail gravy, fried plantain and beef patty. Everything was very good that I absolutely enjoyed and would have ordered more if I can eat more. I would definitely go back and recommend this place. This place is simply great at what it does; no-frills Jamaican food. The lunch deal is one of the better values in the city and certainly in the neighborhood. The jerk chicken is very good and always very fresh (it flies out of there) and unlike many places, their boneless chicken curry has some real flavor. What's really nice is that in an era when most places skimp and save at your expense, the roti you take home will be stuffed with goodness - to the max! Yesterday (Tuesday) was Stew Chicken and Rice which comes in a square container that weighs about a pound and comes with a teeny portion of coleslaw or beans. I also threw in a spicy beef patty for $1.50. I can't resist those things. There isn't much of an ambience here (the Bob Marley on repeat must be murder for the staff) so I took my order to go. The chicken was tender, and the rice was pretty flavorful too. I was hoping for something a little spicier (though the patty had a little bit of kick), but the flavours were pretty satisfying and the portion size was too. With daily specials (and plenty of options beyond) I'm sure I'll be back upon their doorstep soon. (Singing sweet songs... blah, blah, blah.) Obligatory Title Pun: The JERK KING's meat can't be beat. Stopped by here for a mid-afternoon bite, and was a little disappointed to find that they were out of jerk chicken. Luckily, they had some in the oven and we had only wait 10 minutes before we were served. So for $10 we were served four pieces of piping hot jerk chicken, one large plate of rice and beans with a generous helping of gravy, and one coleslaw. Good value. The coleslaw was yummy (perhaps the best I've had), the rice with gravy was so tasty, and the chicken was pretty good as well... except it *wasn't* jerk chicken! It was like some kind of rotisserie or bbq chicken with a bit of a kick, but definitely not authentic jerk. I don't know if this was a one-off (looking at the other reviews on here), or whether people just don't know what real jerk is. Strangely, in other respects the place was very authentic and had a true Jamaican vibe. I'm willing to give this place another shot, but the jerk here cannot compare with the stuff I had at the Ritz located at Yonge & College. There's very little that's kingly about the Jerk King, I've only stumbled in here as a last resort when some of the other local fare has closed, and when I can't stomach any Tim Horton's. I've been here roughly 5 times in 6 years which kind of shows my willingness to give them another shot. Very little is actually prepared fresh, and the fillings are at times rancid smelling when they are taken out of the fridge to be reheated repeatedly. To be honest, I'm surprised how long it takes (18 minutes) to prepare a chickpea roti when all of their items are in the fridge including store bought roti skins. The two stars are for the decent portion sizes and great home made hot sauce. The spice blends are actually pretty good, but it would be better if the food was a bit more fresh. read more

I used to go to this place at least twice a month for a long time. The quality hasn't changed much in the past few years even since it's name change. I usually get the jerk chicken with rice and peas and curry goat gravy. Love it. The jerk chicken isn't like the usual jerk chicken, it's a bit more saucy and also a little sweet too compared to other jerk chicken places. The rice and peas is nutty and flavourful on its own, I really like the rice here and haven't found a jerk chicken place with better rice and peas. I also usually get it with curry goat, as I find the oxtail a bit too sweet for my liking, and I find the curry goat to be a bit thicker which I also enjoy. Their fried chicken is also pretty good but I rarely get it, pretty much stuck on the same combo. I used to get the chick peas here and they are also really nice, especially if you do half rice and half chick peas. Their beef patties are also very tasty, not sure how they cook them but they are always very flaky and buttery. One of my favourite places in toronto, for sure. read more

Unpretentious, bad-ass Jerk Chicken. There are 3 tables to sit and chow down if you are famished, and a courtesy sink to use if you are inclined to eat jerk chicken properly, ie. with your hands! There isn't much ambiance and it's not really a sit down restaurant though, so my recommendation is, in the summer take your order walk 2 mins down the road to Duffrin Grove Park and eat it under the sun, sitting on the grass, like it's meant to be eaten. In the winter I usually grab take out and run home to eat it. I visited Jamaica last year and had high hopes for the jerk chicken I would taste there. To my surprise, Jerk King put Jamaica's jerk chicken to shame! (granted i was at a '4 star' all inclusive...) Anyways, if you live in the neighborhood, and always wondered it this place was any good, grab 10 bucks have your self a hearty meal and a 'ting' to wash it down. Delish. I can only speak to amazingness of the veggie and chicken rotis. The potatoes, chicken and chickpeas are cooked down in perfectly flavoured curry sauces. The roti is huge and I usually save half for the next day. If you like it spicy ask for the hot sauce. Go for the coleslaw as a side, it's perfectly creamy. The service is friendly, and efficient.
