With Monday off my friend and I decided to get breakfast somewhere different. We live in South Denver and frequent Snooze and Urban Egg nut decided to head towards DU to check out Jelly. I was excited for the fun flavors of donuts and also got a side of biscuits and gravy. The donuts weren't warm and only flavorful because of the topping. I was expecting a warm light and airy donut hole. They were very dense. Next came the biscuits and gravy that was nearly inedible. I make b&g at home all the time and one tip you MUST always follow is to stir the flour so there is not any clumps. This gravy was like eating bland tapioca pudding. I added lots of salt and hot sauce and still couldn't manage to eat much. Sad to say we will not be in again and will try other spots in Denver next time. read more

I gave them another try today and the whole thing was a disaster. Dry biscuit cold in the center as though it had been refrigerated and then thrown in the microwave by someone who does not fully understand how microwaves work and needlessly greasy eggs. Seemed like this would be an interesting place. WARNING!!! Plan on spending all day! Note that there are two different Jelly cafés. We didn't realize that. From our hotel, got on the waiting list at the capital Hill location. Got a text back, and tried to find out what our place was in line, and it told us we had to download the Yelp app even though we already had it on our phone. Call the restaurant, and were told we would have to show up to find out how long the wait would be. Then went to the wrong location, where we were told it would be a 30 minute wait. It has now been an hour and 15 minutes and they just took our order. Food arrived, finally! We both ordered different hashes. Both very bland. One was supposed to have coconut amino acids, and arrived with none. The "homemade jelly" tasted like canned peaches. The whole wheat toast turned out to be grocery store bread. What a wonderful place for a breakfast or brunch, especially if you grew up in the 80s and 90s. The food was great. The decor was unique and fun. The bathroom was not great with the stall door directly in front of the bathroom door. The stall door had a janky lock and a large gap so someone outside or walking into the restroom could get an eyeful. Apart from that we loved the experience. read more

You're better off going to Costco for free samples. Seriously. I've been here 3 times (gotta give a place a fair try) and all 3 times the food has sucked. Disclaimer: I don't like donuts or sweet breakfasts, so maybe I'm at the wrong place? My review is for savory meals. Meal 1: Some sort of veggie hash where they're trying to make the meal hipster by including odd veggies like rutabaga, turnips and brussel sprouts. Problem is, their veggie assortment cooks at different speeds but they throw it in all at once. Half the ingredients are mushy, half are like eating tree bark (because undercooked rutabaga and turnips SUCK...and who puts these in a hash, seriously WTF?). Meal 2: The Boulder Scramble which was probably the least bad thing I ate here except, for no added charge, I got the bonus of EGG SHELLS in my meal! Yay!!! Meal 3: Chilaquiles, which is where we get to the Costco sampler part. You get a bed of generic Costco style tortilla chips (they don't even bother to heat them) topped with a dinky portion of generic Costco black beans straight out of a can (they don't even bother to spice them), a teeny dollop of pre-made mush they call "mashed avocado" (Costco's is probably better) and literally 3 crumbles of cotija cheese. The $10+ price on most of their breakfast meals is an insult. Service is slow (even when they're not crowded) and wait staff treats you like they're too cool for school. So why does Jelly have a huge weekend wait? Because there aren't many other options in the DU hood. Illegal Pete's is great, but limited. Pete's on University only works if you're still in college and hungover. And Maddie's sucks almost as hard. If you can cook a decent, flavorful breakfast and serve it to me without attitude, please open a breakfast place near DU. I'll be there every weekend. read more

We came in for some early breakfast here and had the absolutely best service and great food. The menu has some awesome options for everyone and a variety of fun donut flavors to try to spice up any breakfast. We had tried to order the donuts but unfortunately they were out for the day so the waitress kindly offered us any pancake as an alternate for free! The food service was quick and it was fresh and delicious. The waitress was very attentive, always offering more coffee and kindly checking on how we were doing. The location is great and it seems like there is plenty of seating. The vintage cereal boxes on the wall is kind of a fun addition to the ambiance. Service was awesome on the phone! Donuts and biscuits were incredible. But otherwise a bad experience. The avocado toast caprese is terrible and incredibly overpriced. $10.50 for a single piece of bread (not actually toasted) with about two tablespoons of unseasoned avocado, mozzarella, and tomatoes. The breakfast potatoes aren't crispy. The scrambles have underdone vegetables and no seasoning. Finally, they charge 20% gratuity on take out orders and don't even offer utensils. The wait can be long on Sundays but it's worth it. The corn beef hash is my favorite.

This was far and away the worst dining experience we have had. The food was stone cold. Server never came to see how the food was or offer more water or coffee. Didn't clear a single dish. Then to top it off he added a 25% tip to our bill. There are too many great restaurants in the area to waste your time and money here. BTW There were several empty tables so he was not that busy. He just chatted with his friend sitting at the bar. So frustrating. read more

It felt like a grubbier version of Snooze. The place was cramped, the floors were sticky, and the food was meh. The donut holes were super bland and needed to be drowned in 2-3x more filling/sauce than what was provided. The coffee was very watered down. The service was lackluster. We had to hunt down servers with our mugs in hand to get refills, but I suppose with coffee so watered down, they probably didn't expect anyone to seek refills. read more

UPDATE: Jelly IGNORES Yelp waitlist. I took away two stars for this. You can't beat a walkable breakfast place that has gluten free toast, pancakes, and donuts. My husband and I are regulars at Jelly DU. We have learned the trick to fast service: go early!! The staff are great and friendly, and our food is always delicious. I almost can escape ordering the Boulder or Hillside scrambles, but the plates of Benedict's and other goodies that are delivered to other tables also look great. Again, if you don't want to wait for a table, go early! read more

I had a great brunch here yesterday. I added us to the waist via Yelp about 20 minutes before my group of four arrived and we were seated promptly on arrival. I got the ULTIMATE biscuits and gravy and it was a ridiculously huge portion of home-style flavor. Add great company and a bloody mary on the side and I left a happy girl. The past 2 times I have been to Jelly, we have been seated on the booth side near the kitchen, and both times there has been a gnarly sewage smell that is not pleasant while you are trying to eat. We came on a Saturday (yikes), and, we waited 20 mins or so for our table. Not bad at all. However, our food came out within 5 mins of ordering it. This to me was a red flag. I had the chile eggs benedict and the biscuits were rock hard. I ended up sending my food back. Overall not a good experience and will not be back. read more

I love this place!! I came with my bestie from Denver and we ordered a hash of some sort with chorizo and peppers that was the BOMB. She ordered biscuits and gravy that was so heavenly -- your perfect comfort food. The atmosphere was quaint with fun decor and oh man I loved our server. She was short and little and short hair and was SO perky and considerate. Ehhhh.... I have been before and I gotta say the whole experience goes down a notch everytime...wish it was different . The girls could be friendlier but whatever .. My breakfast was cold and we had to ask the waitress multiple times for orange juice and she just didn't seem like she cared that much ... I was bummed .. Food was ok but that's about the only good thing I have to say. I was served my coffee in a chipped glass mug which is absolutely unacceptable. God forbid someone cut themselves on something like that. That's not where it ended, although I wish it was. when we got water the person sitting next to me was spilled on and also had his food spilled on him. Then to correct the issue they paid for one pancake in a party of 5 where so many other things were messed up. After we finished some of our drinks we left the dirty things at the end of the table and all the dirty stuff was just left there. I have been to the restaurant a hand full of times and this last time was by far the worst service and the worst food I have been served here. I typically order a hash and this time it was 90% potatoes and 10% veggies and meat. Nobody even came to ask how it was tasting. The ambience is cool though. Not worth the money.
