Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA - Site 139 has hammock trees!

The major question is if the high price is worth the extras they provide. To me, the answer is no…read more Good Extra activities Giant pool Arcade $1 pancakes Friendly staff Long hours at camp store Movies Super close to harpers ferry national park Neutral Putt putt- fun, but needs some tlc. Bad Kids riding their bikes at night- dangerous No guide to site (would have been helpful, especially for sites that are well hidden like ours was) Closed the pool for the season at 5 on a Saturday. I appreciate them keeping it open an extra week but why it couldn't be closed later that day or Sunday morning the same way is beyond me- they had to kick out at least 10 people who were all still swimming. Cabins are in rough shape- ours had holes from carpenter bees and other things. The heater was on making the cabin 90+ degrees when we walked in. Only 1 ac unit for two bed rooms. More than half the sites were empty the entire time we stayed. No dish cleaning station, especially important for tent campers. I had to use water from a pipe that sprayed everywhere except where you needed. Every time we did dishes I was soaked. I felt like there were a lot of extra charges despite the added activity fee. Unclear which roads are one ways and which aren't. An rv almost ran me off the road when they went the wrong way down one of the roads. Long walk to bathrooms for some spots. I've been looking to stay here for a few years but couldn't justify the cost. $300 for a 2 night stay in a cabin without a bathroom. Pretty steep! So when they offered a buy one get one night, I jumped at the offer. Cabin- decent, but badly in need of upgrades. We had A TON of carpenter bees. There was a trap that was totally full. I looked at other cabins near us and none of them had traps. Ours had 2 rooms, one full of bunks and another with a standard bed. The bunk room had a window ac unit. The adult room had nothing. No fan, no unit, just a few windows. If you close the door to the bunk room, it gets SUPER HOT! I opened the window but that didn't do anything on a hot day. I found out one of the screens was just being held in place, not actually installed. Grounds- decent, but seem to be run down. Maybe due to end of season, but there were clearly lots of things in need of repair. Just play a round of mini golf and you'll see what I mean. Mosquitoes surpringly aren't a problem but gnats are the worst. The areas where they were unbearable include mini golf and the jumping pad/playground area. Think a literal face full of gnats attacking you. Traffic- no one knows which roads are two way vs one way. I'm not sure even the staff know. We were coming back to the campground and turned down a road di thought was one way. Coming right at me is a giant rv. They refused to move so I had to drive in the grass just to get by. I later checked the map and it wasn't clear one way or the other. It seems like it should do the same thing as most other campgrounds, lots of one ways with the road at the bottom dumping everyone out who wants to leave. The way things are now seemed to cause a lot of confusion (some with me but I noticed the same thing with other drivers). Would I stay again? Maybe if prices were more reasonable for cabins. I wouldn't tent camping here because they lack a lot of the basics in my opinion. It was a beautiful campground with lots of space, but could end up being quite a hike to the nearest bathroom.

I've never stayed at a KOA/campground where the sites were so unlevel, close together, and the whole infrastructure in need of repair. The Historic trench section is nice in the trees, but the roads are crumbling and too small for most RV's. If the person across from your site is already parked, good luck having enough room to back into your site. Our site was so unlevel that I was not able to get the RV leveled the entire weekend. Looking at the surrounding sites most campers were jacked high on blocks or sloping significantly. The section of sites were on a curve/semi-circle, which caused the site beside ours to be even smaller. We had to move our picnic table to give space for this person to back his camper on the site. They were unable to get even close to level so they didn't put out their slide. There is a new section to the campground out in the open whose sites are more level, but they are even closer together than the section we stayed in. In addition to the poor sites, little enforcement was done regarding monitoring the number of people on the sites and the partying going on. A nearby site had 15+ people on Friday night partying and carrying on until 1:30AM until a fight broke out. They had a boombox on the bumper of the camper and blasted music all evening. After hours any vehicle can enter the campground as there is no gate. Cars/trucks pulled up to the party sites, who just drove in to party. I know calls were made to the office as neighboring campers stated to us. On Saturday night, the group wasn't quite as rambunctious, due to a visible presence of staff driving by, but with a campground this size, regular monitoring and shutting down of quiet hour violators should occur pre-actively. Harpers Ferry KOA could be so much more if they would invest in site upgrades and rule monitoring. We will not return.

I just happened to walk into the grounds a week or two ago and finally got a good look at them. I have been through here many times while on the Metro Bus and only get a glimpse. It is well used and not just in the warm months. There are always people here throughout the year. As expected, during the warmer months this place is packed. With the amount of things on property to do during those months, I can see why. There is minigolf, playgrounds, spray playground, and tons of walking trails. I also see the horse crossing signs along the road and trails through the area, so be aware of that. The only downside to this place, and it is of no fault to the owners, is the amount of traffic that passes by and may cause a bit of a hectic situation when it comes to entering and exiting. They have widened the road in front of the entrance to allow for a turning lane and an entrance lane to the road, but a lot of the people traveling the road seem to not understand that. I don't see the road widening any further until the brides that cross over I-495 are replaced and widened themselves.

It is really a park for tourists and families with kids. They have a rental ballroom which had non-campers racing through the park. The little train/tactor ride around the park stopped in front of our site beeping the train horn with people yelling as we were trying to cook. I don't need to be on someone elses vaction. They also allow golf carts with sound and light systems to race around the park blasting music and yelling. It was a different RV experience than we expected. Not a real RV or camping spot, but probably great for families on summer break.

We chose this campground expecting a family-friendly environment for Easter weekend, but…read moreunfortunately our experience was significantly impacted by repeated disturbances from a group of adults in nearby campsites. There was excessive screaming, loud music, and disruptive behavior that continued well past midnight, making it extremely difficult for families and young children to enjoy the holiday weekend. Even more concerning was the apparent lack of response to enforce quiet hours or address the ongoing noise issue. This does not reflect the family atmosphere many guests would reasonably expect during a holiday weekend. I strongly encourage management to take these complaints seriously and enforce campground rules consistently to ensure all guests can enjoy their stay. Families considering visiting during Easter weekend should be aware that this has been an ongoing issue.

No issues with the late check in. The paperwork and site location was ready for my arrival. The biggest issue for me, my site was conveniently located right next to the campground dump station. On a breezy and temperate Maryland evening, I was hoping to enjoy a fire, but the breeze filled the air with the aromas of everyone's poop (literally), so that was a hard pass for me. I was hoping to sleep in a bit, get some work done before I leave, and when I requested a late check out, it wasn't available. There are three open sites next to me that I'm looking at as I type this message, and I find it very hard to believe that someone paid a fee to reserve this specific site right next to the dump station. Or, perhaps, Monday is a high volume check in day at this location. Either way, from my view, there was zero effort to accommodate the demanding request I made to stay an additional two hours at this location. Next time I pass through this way, I'll either pass this KOA and find the next closest campground, or this experience has motivated me to try Pilot/Loves parking for 1/4 the cost of what I paid to stay here. They have dump stations there, and I'm sure they won't stick me literally right next to it.
