I rarely write long/ detailed Yelp reviews, but this experience deserved every detail, especially because I truly appreciated the time Ali (the owner and professional chef), spent at our table explaining the food, the ingredients, and where their meats come from(including Nebraska and New Zealand). That personal interaction reminded me of the philosophy behind places like The French Laundry in Yountville, where dining is not simply dining and its more about serving a plate of food the chef, ingredients, story, and hospitality are all part of the unique experience. Of course, this is Persian dining, but that same level of pride and personal attention made our evening feel special. The koobideh was outstanding (eventhough we ordered All Javan Combo to try most of the kababs in menu) for someone who knows the flavors of Tehran, it is very difficult for me to find koobideh in the States that gives me that familiar taste of home. This one did. The meat quality was exceptional, and everything was beautifully prepared. We ended up to ordering some to go koobideh. The torshi was beyond this world, and their homemade mast o moosir and doogh (yogurt drink) were excellent. Everyone was professional and welcoming, but Ali's presentation was what made the experience memorable. The service by the staff here was absolutely wonderful, they make you feel right at home, they helped us with the menu choices letting us know everything they had to offer. The restaurant itself is is so clean, big screen tvs, we were able too watch the World Cup matches. The music selection was peaceful great ambiance overall. We started off with Dolma and a fresh cherry refresher (I had never tired this drink its officially my favorite). The Naan was delicious don't dip it in the cucumber yogurt. The sides of mint and raw onion don't miss. For my main dish I had Chenjeh Kabobs with tasty filet mignon this staple dish wit take you straight to the Middle East. Try it with their signature cherry rice. The freshly cut cucumber and tomatoe salad is very crisp and a perfect side dish. I definitely will come back. Overall 5 star meal. The rice is fluffy and the cherries are from Colorado. Such an amazing combination paired with the chicken kabobs. My son is the pickiest eater and he loves this dish. We order at least once a week. I used to go to Javan all the time back in the day when the wife and I lived in the neighborhood. After moving down to Westchester, we stopped. Recently, we were curious if our old go-to, Javan, was still any good. So, my wife and I dined there. The beef and chicken koobideh entrees were both excellent- so tender and juicy. This weekend, we have some friends visiting from San Francisco. As SF is a fantastic food town in its own right, we suggested two different food options that are better in L.A. than what you'll find up there: Korean BBQ or Persian food. The wife pushed a return to Javan. Alex, the manager, recommended the All Javan Combo for our party of 5. It includes tzatziki, hummus, salad, and flatbread to start followed by beef and chicken koobideh, chicken kabob, filet, lamb, and choice of rice. We added an eggplant stew with lamb shank and an extra skewer of chicken koobideh. Finished the meal off with hot tea, a sublimely-delicious saffron ice cream (house-made by Alex himself), baklava, and little bites that were like honey churro nubs. After we finished this feast of a meal, my daughter looked up at me and said, "This was one of the best Persian meals I've ever had." I must agree. This was a meal greater than the sum of its parts- food was very, very good and the experience was elevated by the warmth of Alex and his staff. It's rare that a restaurant works this hard to make its guests feel welcome. Free street parking and a full-bar (Alex is happy to whip-up a special cocktail for you). If you like Persian food or haven't tried it, this is a good spot to get acclimated. We came for lunch with friends who were eager to share their cuisine with us. I have had Persian food before and I like it fine... not my favorite but still... Javan is pretty and the service is very good. We made a lunch reservation but on a rainy Friday afternoon, they weren't busy. Still, probably make a reservation because this feels like an expat's favorite. We had the appetizer sampler and a big family-style platter of kebabs for our main course. Everything was good - the chicken with saffron and the two kinds of beef we tried were all good. The rice is delicious and the tea had a delicious spicy kick. Definitely a good place for an intro to Persian food or a nice meal if you're an expert. This is probably my favorite Persian restaurant on the west side! We usually come for their lunch special since we are local and always leave feeling unable to breathe after. My favorite is the chicken koobideh plate and a close second is the chicken kabob plate. Both are very juicy and flavorful. I don't know what they do to the chicken but it shocks me every time! I need to learn the secret to cooking chicken to be this juicy/flavorful! Service is always very welcoming and there is almost always ample seating at lunch. What a pleasant surprise! This place is so good. We almost went to Darya down the road, but the ratings here were higher, and I can see why. The food was fantastic. Everything we had was so flavorful! I am now a Gormeh Sabzi fan for life! The koobideh was super tender and seasoned really well. The Cornish game hen was definitely a favorite. It had just the right amount of char on the skin. Our server was Viktor, and he was the friendliest most helpful server. We have been to some Persian restaurants where we felt unwelcome. Street parking, we arrived to an almost completely empty restaurant on a Tuesday night ~6pm for dinner and enjoyed recommendations from our server: chicken, beef koobideh, and lamb shank. We added a stew and also some cherry rice and one more special rice. If you have not tried this style of rice or are new to Persian food, this will be an incredible meal! Because LA has such a high density of phenomenal Persian restaurants, I cant say that Javan has successfully distinguished itself at the top of the pack. We had the most wonderful meal at Javan last night. The service was amazing. Alex took great care recommending and answering all our questions. He was so passionate and confident about the quality of food being served. Our party of 6 ordered different combinations of Chicken/beef koobideh, lamb loin chops, #6 boneless chicken breast, and beef tenderloin. Alex told me all the meat is halal. All of us enjoyed each dish. For me, the winner was the chicken koobideh and the boneless chicken. It was so moist tender and flavourful. Now let's talk about the rice. Most of the good Persian restaurants I've been to give maybe 2-3 options of rice. Javan has 6 different types to choose from. Of them, we tried Sabzi, Albaloo, and Zereshk. They were equally flavourful and complimented each dish well. We started the meal with the Babaganoush and ended with a fried churros dessert which were delicious. The tea was bottomless and so is my appetite now that I'm reflecting back the next morning. I will be back to try some of the signature dishes Alex recommended. A large restaurant dominates the corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Butler Ave. It's called Javan. The space is large and comfortable, the menu is large and mouth watering, the portions are large and delicious. The food is high-quality and perfectly cooked Iranian cuisine, but the prices are not large; they are very reasonable for the size and quality of the portions. The Middle Eastern ingredients are blended with subtle, exotic Mediterranean flavors. Imagine huge chunks of tender, perfectly cooked filet mignon on a bed of rice, surrounded by the usual accompaniment of charred sweet red peppers, onions, etc. We've sampled everything from fish, to chicken kabobs, lamb shank and rack of lamb, plus beautifully seasoned vegetarian dishes. The quality is consistently good. (A friend turned me on to their fluffy rice with cherries. So glad she did!) Don't worry that you'll be crushed by big crowds. It's a large space with plenty of room between tables. Therefore it sometimes feels half-empty (sigh of relief); relaxing, non-frenetic, and attractive. Perfect for a large family, romantic rendezvous, or a business dinner. In fact, my one reservation about writing this review is that I'm hoping all the good reviews won't spoil it for us. We search for little-known gems so we can enjoy fine food without raucous music and loud voices. The background noise at Javan is minimal and customers can chat with ease. Parking has never been a problem. Service is polite, smiling, and prompt. It can often be a last-minute choice without a reservation because the dining room, and the attractive bar, are so spacious. By the way, the owner, Alex, has an amazing memory. Although I only discovered this place about a year ago, Alex remembers everything my friends and I order; even though none of us has repeated the same entree twice. Some honestly great Persian cuisine in West LA. It's really close to my work so I stop in often for lunch and every time it is consistently really good. It's very large on the inside so they can host many different sized parties and it is never cramped. Each time we have been, the service has been really great and the whole staff is always really polite. They also are quick with the drink refills which I really appreciate. They don't have a dedicated parking lot but street parking is very easy to find in this part of town. They have a very large menu filled with all sorts of Persian classics. For my most recent visit, I ordered the Kashk O Bademjan as my starter, which I thought was really good. It's nice to mix up appetizers instead of getting hummus every time. For my entrée I chose the Kobideh with a side of rice and salad. It's basically like a Persian meatball in the shape of a kebab. Honestly really delicious in flavor and something I order often and would highly recommend. They also bring out free wraps and onions, which I love. They don't skimp on the portion sizes either, and you will not leave hungry. Overall some delicious person food in a casual setting in a quieter part of Los Angeles. The dining room is spacious, the menu has larger format options and the food, service and atmosphere is always top notch. The owner is very knowledgeable and particular about how everything is prepared and presented. At most restaurants, chicken is often dry. Javan's is always moist and savory. Their gheymeh bademjan and fesenjan paired so well with the tadig and other rice dishes (baghali, zereshk and albaloo polo). Another measure we use is the tea after dinner. Javan's tea is ultra fragrant and served in handsome tea cups. It was a perfect foil for our baghlava. Sumac sprinkled over the rice adds some tartness. Very clean bathroom and on some nights you'll hear a live piano. By the entrance is a case with tempting lemon bars and baklavah.
