Japango is sushi without a lot of attitude. Generally a good value, always fresh, and simple but nicely presented. Our teenage kids have adopted Japango Tuesday night all you can eat night as THE spot for birthday dinners. They don't advertise this deal any more - why would they for all you can eat sushi, apps, and entrees for $30.00 per person. The service is always friendly and the owner/manager walks the room frequently talking to diners, clearing dishes, and supporting his staff. This is always a good sign. I really like the atmosphere better than some of the colder and harsher environments at competing sushi bars. A couple specific items they do really well: Beef Tataki - super thin rare (raw really) beef in a light soy sauce with - simple and delicious. Yellow tail collar - I have forgotten the Japanese for this but another item that is excellent here. read more

Great food, but I was so disappointed in the service and attitude of the staff that I will never go back. While my partner and I were out to dinner we overheard a manager demeaning and making fun of new employees who were in training. As someone who worked every position in a restaurant including management, his attitude disgusted me. I did not get the names of the employees he was humiliating but the managers name was Jonathan and he desperately needs to be trained because it's as if he's never worked in the service industry in his life. If you want to build a strong team in a restaurant you need to set an example for your employees, not be arrogant and condescending. The service has gotten worse and worse over the years and I think he is one of the main reasons why. read more

I've been to Japango a couple times living in Boulder, and I've had very hit and miss experiences. Every time I've gone the food has been good, though. Which is after all, the point of a restaurant. However the other contributing factors to a good sushi place are on and off. The waiters can tend to be a little bit rushed and snappy, most of them need attitude adjustments. The decor is very esthetically pleasing, very modern like most sushi places are. My favorite thing to get here is the el corazon, which is a crispy-ish rice patty with some tuna, avocado, sweet soy and sirachi hot sauce. Sounds weird, but is completely delicious. Most original piece of sushi I've ever had, I think. The rest of their standard rolls such as the california and philly are good, too. They have a menu of specials every night, and the prices for most everything on their menu are really low, which is nice. If you're looking for pretty decent sushi on a tight budget, I would head to Japango. read more

An exceptional dining experience. The food was great, and I'll get to that, but our server Jason in all candor put it over the top. He's in that rare set of folks who really care about excellence and then live it in their work. We just happened to luck out in getting him. We ordered the Hanami, Denali, and DC (spider) rolls for the pescatarian folk and also the Sushi VP and Loch Ness on the veg end. The rolls were great, fresh, nicely presented, and balanced in flavors. Not off the charts but very solid and with some nice unexpected twists eg truffle in the Hanami. Uniformly high quality. It was on round two where Jason shined, noting our first orders and upping the game with spot-on recommendations. The Fukuju junmai ginjo to complement the Gilded Bee special roll (tempura asparagus, hamachi and brown butter black truffle honey wtf!?) and the matcha-infused crepe brûlée. We sat outdoors on a lovely evening. I have dined in many sushi restaurants, and Japango was only average, if that. I felt the prices were rather high for the sizes of the servings and the quality of the food. So disappointing! I have always enjoyed Japango, but my last experience was really not good. Ordered the chirashi bowl (to go) - it was 50% more expensive than the chirashi bowls of other Boulder Japanese restaurants, so I was expecting something terrific. And it was not good - not the quantity nor the quality of the fish. 4 pieces of maguro - which were a poor cut, thin, tough and full of sinew. With just one piece of salmon, one piece of unagi, one piece of ebi, one piece of hamachi. I will never order the chirashi bowl from Japango again - way below the quality standards I expect from them. read more

Japango has a super inviting atmosphere inside and out, accompanied by a host of creative and delicious appetizers and maki. The staff is friendly as well. However, it is quite pricey and I would say that there is a strategy to ordering here. In order to most enjoy your time at Japango, stick to creative and tasty sounding maki and appetizers. More traditional Japanese flavors including nigiri, tempura, miso, etc. will be better enjoyed (and for a much reduced price) at many of the other delicious Japanese restaurants in the Pearl St. Mall area. If you're prepared to foot the bill and you order creative dishes such as their green lip mussel appetizer or rolls such as the Sakai or Heart's Delight, Japango is bound to be a great time. If I am in this area again I will try for something better. We had: - Udon - This was quite flavorful - Beef Bento Box - Steak was tough and bland . Two words: Bento Box. It's the lunch special where you get an entree, a roll and/or tempura and soup and rice, served in a box (apparently it's a traditional meal). Traditional or not, I love it. It's the cheapest, and most filling, way to get a great meal at a Japanese restaurant. I love the salmon. Two more words: Shrimp heads. I enjoy every visit to Japango, because in the realm of Boulder sushi, it is a solid option. I do think reviewers get a little dramatic about the fish quality and their complaints, because I used to live in California as well, and while I agree sushi is not as good in Colorado, Japango is still a fine option! I enjoy the inventive menu and have rarely been disappointed with a roll here. It's very clean, the service is incredibly friendly, and I never regret eating out here! For business diners or families with picky eaters: They do have fairly limited options that are not fish-related (and most of which, like the steak, are pretty pricey), so if that's an issue Hapa across the street has better food variety. One of the best sushi places in Boulder, not the best I've ever had because let's be real there's no ocean near Colorado. But when in doubt this is where you should go to get your sushi fix. The late night happy hour on Friday and Saturday is half priced speciality rolls which is awesome!! The Colorado roll and Diablo roll are both awesome. The seaweed salad was good, the gyoza was awful, the brussels sprouts were actually great, but I was confused as to why they were on the menu in a sushi restaurant. No matter, I'm happy we liked 2/3 of our appetizers, because the sushi left a lot to be desired and was completely underwhelming. The rice quality made it even worse. In Boulder, Japango is definitely the most adequately priced sushi for the taste. Excellent rolls, particularly special rolls. Also, check out their all-you-can-eat Tuesdays and late night happy hours. Perfect for a later dinner after a long day in the sun. Their menu is diverse even excluding the sushi. For the vegetarians out there, their tofu is absolutely top of the line. Delicious salad dressings (request the Soy Ginger - it's the best) and wonderful miso soup. Free edamame on Sundays, Happy Hour before 6 and after 10 every day, all day on Mondays. The only negative aspect of Japango I will mention is that you sometimes need to be very patient with the service. That is not to say that the service is bad, because it certainly isn't, but keep in mind that this is a Pearl Street restaurant. If you arrive during the regular dinner hours, particularly on Friday and Saturday night, the wait will be long for a table and for your sushi after you sit down. It's worth it, though! read more

Coming into Boulder a few years ago I found it pretty difficult to find a new sushi restaurant that I truly really liked and trusted (land locked state). Sushi has been a favorite cuisine of mine as well as my family for a long time so I definitely have had my fair share of good and bad restaurants. I want to say that this is without a doubt the one of if not the best sushi restaurant in Boulder by far. Being that Colorado is a landlocked state and I have run into numerous accounts of fish that may have been inadequate to serve, it is in some situations a nerve racking thought to eat imported fish. For the most part there hasn't been a problem for me in boulder but what I have noticed from Japango is that the fish and food they provide always looks and tastes very fresh and taken care of. Some other restaurants are pretty easy to see that it may have been in a fridge for a while but at Japango it is very easy to see the quality difference. Along with their food comes their very aseptically pleasing restaurant setting. In comparison to other restaurants I have experienced in boulder, Japango in boulder provides the best ambiance. Perfect place for a date. I have spent a decent amount of time for numerous different occasions over the past year and not once have I been let down by their services. Not only by the exquisite quality food they provide to their customers but the service in which the food comes with. The staff is very welcoming upon arrival and is extremely successful in the way they take care of their guests; food timing, need fulfillment's, drinks, etc, they are on it in a quick and respectful manner. I have taken my family their for special occasions as well as friends for various reasons. My parents love it, I love it, everyone should. Trying to decide what to eat for lunch, we ventured across this Japanese restaurant. Japanese is my absolute favorite food, so I had to go here. We ordered basic sushi: California rolls, oshinko maki, and spicy tuna. They were really good. We also had miso soup to go with it and it was really good too! The place is very clean and the staff is friendly. Even though they don't look to be too kid friendly, they made it a point to make sure our daughter was occupied :-) We would return here on our next visit to Boulder. read more

We had a good experience here this past weekend. We were just looking for a quick bite to tide us over until a late dinner that night. We walked in and were seated right away at the sushi bar. Which was very convenient. The waitress was very nice and told us we could just give our order to the sushi chef's. She immediately came back to give us water and she kept the glasses full the whole time we were there. We ordered just our usual go to. 4 pcs salmon (shake), 2 pcs shrimp (ebi), and a California roll. They were all very good. The salmon was nice and fatty and the shrimp was very sweet.
