I had a great meal and good time at Japango. The sushi is fairly priced. Great beer and sake selection. Fun lively atmosphere. Happy hour (5-630) specials include $2 kirin drafts and $2 small sake. As well as $2.25 hand rolls, shrimp sushi and california rolls. As with any good sushi bar make sure to ask what their specials are and what fish they've gotten in fresh each day. Second Time.. 1\19\08- Went back to try their all you can eat on tuesday. It was amazing. For $28 you get everything. appetizers, entrees, soups, salads.. and of course, sushi. It is an amazing deal. And if you get there before 630 then you also get drinks at happy hour prices. It fills up very quick so id recommend getting there at 5, or waiting until later at night. Appetizers come out much quicker than the sushi so make sure to get a bunch while you're waiting. beef tataki was extremely good. as was the hamachi kama, grilled squid, nuta and rare tuna steak. Japango's all-you-can-eat night on Tuseday is a fun and unique experience. It is high priced and difficult to get your money's worth and has several restrictions. The food is all fresh and flavorful, although some of the rolls seem very heavy on rice. There are quite a few vegetarian options on the menu, from sushi to entrees. The all-you-can-eat has quite a few of these veggie entrees as well. At least on this special menu they do not allow substitutions, so the only veggie options are those that are specifically stated. We came to Japango in a very large group (12 of us) on one of their busiest nights. Tuesday is definitely popular with the special menu so the place is packed. We had a little discrepancy in information when we tried to make reservations but they do indeed take them and it is recommended, especially on Tuesday! Rules of all-you-can-eat night: $35 per person No sharing with people not getting all-you-can-eat 50 cent charge for each piece you don't eat No substitutions The menu is a smaller selection of entrees, appetizers, and sushi and nigiri. This was fun. Everyone just ordered whatever sounded good and it just kept coming out. More and more and more! We did order as we went as opposed to ordering everything all at once. This took longer as we had to wait for each batch, but it made sure we didn't waste anything and didn't have to pay for it. The waitress was super kind and went through the menu with me to tell me what was vegetarian and what was not. She apologized that there were no substitutions (so normally they must allow this) but overall there were plenty of veggie options. I greatly appreciated her going over this with me. The veggie rolls themselves were good. None of them wowed me but I didn't regret any of them either. The hand rolls are fun and different (served in a large cone of nori). Some of the smaller rolls (avocado for example) were very rice heavy. This was only unfortunate because of the price. The atmosphere of this restaurant is awesome. Trendy and cool, their latest renovation was a good one. The lounge area with couches and chairs is a cool place for a large group, although definitely hard to hear everyone. Getting seated was the only awkward piece. We did arrive a little before our reservation but there is no where to stand up front so we were all packed in like sardines. We would have walked around but they told us they were just cleaning off the table. This took a long time to do. Overall, 3 stars for food and all-you-can-eat experience. The price is high and not easy to get money's worth, especially for vegetarians. Next time I would probably just do the regular menu. Bumped this up to 4 stars as they did offer a fairly large selection of vegetarian options and the waitress was so friendly and helpful! read more

Sushi is one of my favorite foods and I will continue to frequent Japango for as long as I can! They have a really hip area with a nice bar, lounge seating, and a tub of jellyfish to admire (so unique!) On Tuesday's they have an all you can eat set menu for $40. We went to japango for a aniversery dinner and it we what we were looking for. had to wait for a bit but the place is on pear street and they call you when it is time for your reservation. So we walked around had a few drinks and came back. The interior of the place is really trendy. They have a cool jelly fish tank and the decor looks great. The tables were clean and we sat towards the back of the restaurant which was a little cramped but fine for two. They had a tap take over from stone brewery so i was loving that and the specialty drinks were great as well. Waiter was nice, we checked off the roils we wanted on the menu and called it good. Food took a little bit of time but it was delicious and we were in no hurry. This place has a really cool vibe and wasn't too load where we were sitting but i could see it getting noisy by the bar area. All in all a great atmosphere for what we like. Pro tip: the place is a little pricy, we spent over $100 for the two of us. With 10 specialty drinks and beers that is to be expected. They do a $35 all you can eat deal which is a lot of sushi to eat to make it worth in and not all the rolls are on the special so you are better off not doing it. So, Japango says they pride themselves on handling allergies well but they sure didn't last night. We ordered appetizers, specified gluten free, and one of them came out not gf. I asked the person who delivered the food to make sure it was but she took so long that I gave up and just ate. I assumed she wasn't actually returning and decided to think the food came out correctly in this expensive, fancy, exclusive Japanese restaurant. I mean, places where my meal costs under $10 get it right all the time. Wrong thinking. We learn the "kitchen messed up" although the waiter entered it correctly. Umm, ok. The person who delivered the food says to me, "It's just in the sauce." Oh, ok, then I should be fine. Thanks for telling me I am safe to ingest small portions of my allergen. I mean, really? Then we are told the owner will "take care of us" and handle the rest of our order which she does. Waiter is totally awesome and apologizes profusely multiple times. We actually love him. Owner sort of does. Rest of food is presumed safe at this point. Rest of food is also incredibly amazingly overrpriced. We did not recall prices like these last time we were here but we were celebrating our son's 16th birthday so we stayed. This is an aside but related to when the bill comes. Appetizer that contained gluten has NOT been taken off the bill. Wow. So now I am paying for my allergen. Nothing else has been "taken care of" either to accomodate the very serious thing that has happened. Double wow. We are talking a bill over $225 for 5 people. So, I guess they didn't really care. We just had a similar experience at another inept restaurant (to which we will never return) and they comped the entire meal. I wasn't expecting that but was certainly expecting something. So, yeah, one star for this place and a big zero for the oh so caring owner. Thanks. A lot. My experience after leaving the restaurant last night was super as I dealt with the fact I had ingested an allergen because of your inattentive kitchen staff. I kept a smile on my face solely due to my son's birthday. I hope Japango's staff and owner didn't think that meant all was great and I was enjoying my gluten. But I actually think they might have. Oh boy! Been meaning to check out Japango for quite some time now and I am so glad I finally made it in. This place screams "cool" and "trendy" upon entering in; the centerpiece of the restaurant is a vertical water tank of floating jellyfish--enough said. The lighting is dim and the restaurant is buzzing with noise, but I was told that I was lucky to have come in on a Monday night while it's "this quiet". I was dining with 3 others so we ordered lots of different items on the menu and as food kept coming out I was surprised but how delectable (and beautiful) everything was; some things I enjoyed more than others but the quality, freshness, and taste of all the items I tried was amazing. The service was also lovely-Isaac our server made great recommendations, was attentive, and was always available to us while juggling multiple sections. As far as cost--for a sushi restaurant of this caliber and for the location and ambience, I think the prices are completely fair; you definitely get way you pay for here. We were seated immediately and our wait person was attentive and able to easily answer our few questions about the menu. We each ordered a lunch bento box, (both were well under $10 each). My teriyaki beef was prepared perfectly; everything was fresh. The bento box is a great size for lunch, not too much food and reasonably priced. I've rarely had a bad experience here, although if you call ahead for lunch to go, they don't start making your order until you arrive; so calling doesn't seem to have any benefit. I bring friends here when we don't feel like splurging on Sushi Tora, which earns the extra star. read more

Japango was good but was definitely surprised when I got my bill at the end of my meal. Came by around 4 o'clock on a Monday, it was Happy Hour, perfect! I took a seat at the bar and waited for a bartender to come over with a menu which happened within seconds. One of the things I love most about Boulder is that you can literally walk into any restaurant wearing whatever you're wearing and it's acceptable. I was in workout pants and a zip up from hiking earlier that morning and the hostess told me I was completely fine to come in with what I was wearing, I loved that. Anyways, the bartender was nice and showed me what was part of happy hour. I told him I was just here for 2 rolls and he said great and that they were a part of their happy hour deals, half off. Awesome! There was an additional $1 uncharge for brown rice, no problem and expected. I ordered the salmon cucumber and tuna avocado roll both with brown rice and also grabbed a glass of brut rose. The sushi came out quickly and was fresh and tasty. Not the best sushi I've ever had but it did the trick, I was starving and hadn't eaten all day. The brut rose was delicious. I made friendly banter with one of the bartenders who was awesome and friendly suggesting places for me to go later on that night as it was my first time in Colorado. My experience was casual and enjoyable. People started to flutter in as the night got closer to 5 o'clock. After the one drink and 2 rolls I asked for my check and it was $36! I knew this had to be wrong. I was expecting a bill for around $23. The rolls were on happy hour so they should have been $4.50 each with the brown rice addition and then my glass of wine was around $11 or $12. I asked one of the bartenders about the bill and said these rolls should have been on happy hour and he told me that it was only the hand rolls that were a part of it. That wasn't explained to me at all or else I would have gotten the hand rolls instead of the classic ones. I thought that was a little annoying and kind of left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Was visiting from the Chicago area and had a restaurant.com certificate. We were a party of three and showed up without a reservation on a Friday evening. After being seated in the main dining area, we decided to try to area out back and luckily there was 1 table available. It was a little cramped by intimate. Our server (and all of them really) were very attentive and pleasant without being over solicitious. Two of us had teryiaki chicken and sushi rolls, and diner #3 had a plate of assorted sushi rolls. They provided a sufficient of white ginger and wasabi. We ordered 1 glass of wine and 1 mojito. The food was fresh and delicious. Our bill minus the $25 coupon was still $75. We felt the food was good but the prices were a bit steep. My nephew knows other places in Boulder that have the same quality at better prices. One note: I wanted to replace white rice with brown and the upcharge was $2 which I felt was a bit steep for a progressive city like Boulder. So I passed up the upcharge just to make a statement that I felt it was a ripoff. read more

Checked out this place on a Saturday night and was impressed with the fresh chic decor. Very modern, if you can sit on the fron or the back patio which was super cute and secluded. My friend and I hit the lat night happy hour and tried the Brussel sprouts which were just ok. Not my favorite. We then tried 3 of their HH sushi rolls and for the life of me I can't remember the name of the one that we both absolutely loved But it had honey, avacado, and nuts on the outside and was amazing!!! We also tried one with sarracha sauce and shrimp I believe, it was tasty. The last was the one with beef on top and that was a little different to what I'm used to. Not bad, but not great. The drinks we had were not the best or made well. My friend asked for a vodka, lime, splash of soda...they brought her vodka, no ice and twist of lemon....when she took it to the bar to fix, the bartender looked at her strange. It was just a little awkward. Our server took a while to warm up. (Crazy I know). Honestly don't think she has the best personally for that job. But after seeing we were relaxed and easy going, her demeanor changed and she became more friendly. Watch out for the soy sauce on the table, we found a nat in ours. As we sat there and looked at other tables we could see why. They are constantly around and like to fly into the spout. Overall, good HH with half off rolls, awesome ambiance. Pretty "high" end Japanese sushi bar. Pretty expensive sushi for the small amount they give you. I like the fried lobster interesting take since you hardly see it fried. The portions are a bit small. If you stick to the standards than you should be ok. Some of the rolls can be hit or misses. Drinks are pretty good- old fashions. Came here for a Bachelorette party and most of us asked for drink recommendations and we all hated our cocktails, except for their version of the Moscow mule and the wine. The appetizers were terrible, the Tempura shrimp was cold, and the lobster potstickers were gross and very cold. Some of the girls enjoyed their sushi rolls but most of them were extremely poor quality for the price. And we waited almost 2 full hours for our entrees. And all the entrees came out on one giant plate, which was weird and inconvenient. Also weren't able to split checks so we had to spend half an hour figuring out checks and another half hour for him to process all of our cards. This amount of food at other place this could've easily been over $300+ our bill was just over $150! Their happy hour varies during the week, I forget the hours, but if you can figure out what time it is, I highly recommend it.
