Great experience, the owner is very friendly service was great, very very clean restaurant

Long wait, and were the only customers, got home with food, and was very disappointed. Lobster had no taste, waffle was salty, catfish was very salty, jerk wings were horrible. Carrot cake and chocolate cake was hard, stale, and very dry way past use by date. When I visited the establishment when it first opened, it was great. Now, it's not even close to being good. Very disappointed and a waste of money. read more

Went here for lunch today and it was a very limited menu. However, the service was excellent & the curry goat ($20.5o) was quite tasty and it was enough for 2 meals, My sides were spicy cabbage and mac 'n cheese. Also came w/a piece of ripe plantain. Had a nice chat w/Dolly, the affable owner, read more

It was my first time at Janet & Ray's and I ordered the jerk chicken with a side of mac & cheese and rice & peas. The chicken was well-seasoned and it was a generous serving. The restaurant is clean, plays good music, and the service was great! read more

Catfish, Jerk Chicken and sides are on point. Live the food, hours are a little confusing. Best home cooking in Tucson

Food was more southern than Caribbean, but excellent, especially the fried catfish and candied yams. (Who needs dessert!) Great staff -- welcoming, friendly, laugh together about each other's favorites on the menu, knowledgeable about all the choices. read more

I had fried chicken and it was so dry that I could only eat one piece. The rice and peas tasted like leftover food that was reheated! The service was mediocre at best. The ambiance was fine. Definetly not authentic Caribbean food. read more

Best jerk chicken I have ever had.... Flavors keep wanting you to come back for more.. Value is on point. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. -43 year Tucson Resident. read more

Really good, the catfish was super crispy. The potato salad goes and the Mac and cheese was smacking. Really nice place to hang and get a bite. The owners are super nice and welcoming. read more

If you're looking for something different and you like it spicy this is the place for you. Everything we have tried is delicious. Best fried chicken I've had since New Orleans. Be sure to check out the soul food. read more

Unprofessional. Lack of quality control is an issue. Nobody should be serving rice that looks like that, let alone tastes like that-A mound of flavorless mush. Price point is astronomical all things considered. Have called several Saturday mornings to be told there's no oxtail- like whet? Where they do that at??? Pretty sure the owner actually works there, and served my food, so I can't figure out why you'd put that rice on somebody's plate. I'm real upset about that f'kin rice bruh. I want to support black businesses, but I can't do that when they don't have any business acumen. Two stars because the oxtail I had the one time they had it had a great flavor profile. read more

Very nice place. Very clean, bright, and open. The staff were so friendly- felt like family. The food was amazing! We had a fried chicken basket and a catfish basket. It was, very literally, the best catfish I have ever had. Very clean and mild. We ordered the baskets, rather than the dinners. The 'small' portion is the baskets .... HA! We each had enough left over for lunch the next day. Better be hungry when you go there! The prices are extremely reasonable. read more

We had an amazing time at Janet & Ray's last weekend! We had a birthday party for my grandpa and the staff was so great! Thank you so much to Dot, Jacqueline and the other staff who helped us put everything together! Everyone was so kind, the food was great and the service was excellent! read more

Came here with some friends on a recommendation - I was immediately impressed and knew I was in for an amazing meal when I saw a grill sitting just outside the restaurant, smoking meat. Upon entering, one of the servers pushed together some tables for my group and we were given a very casual but super friendly and energetic service. The interior of the restaurant is very clean and modern, with a lot of fun paintings as decor, and the tables are well spaced out! They were out of a few items but the servers were gracious and attentive the entire time, checking in and making sure we were getting all of our orders done perfectly. On to the food itself, I cant put into words how INCREDIBLE the food was. Literally everyone needs to try this place immediately. Every item I tried was super flavorful and PERFECTLY cooked. The fried catfish has a perfect crispy outside texture, and the inside was tender and moist and DELICIOUS. I also got their Mac and cheese and collard greens, both of which are hands down the best I've ever had - my friend who doesn't even like Mac and cheese was raving about it! I also loved their festivals - a thick donut-like treat with powdered sugar and honey - they went really well with the meal! And I also recommended trying one of the Jamaican sodas, I got the Champagne Kola and it really paired well with my food. Overall this was a 10/10 experience and I can't recommend the food enough, everyone should come here! I cant wait to come back and try out more of their menu!! read more

Great customer service. Food is ok. Over salted in the greens and catfish. Plenty of food served on the plate. Cowslaw is ok alot of vinegar different than what I expected. Need to have a menu describing what's in the dish. Clean restrooms and environment. Menu changes daily. It's very family oriented. It's a new business. Would of like to know prices on food. You order from the table but no check. Walk up to pay your bill. Their process needs to be fixed. Neither satisfied or disappointed. Opened late for service on Sunday. Need to have better time management and better flow on prices, food, and direction when it comes to running a business. read more

I love this place! I've gone a couple times already and my bf and I always order the jerk chicken and catfish. The food is always fresh and so yummy. The owners are nice and I love that it's a black local owned business. I've taken my friends here and they loved it! Definitely recommend read more

A new and one of the few restaurants in Tucson that serves Caribbean food. It is definitely different and unique all at the same time. If you like food that isn't shy of spices than this is a definitely a place for you to try. Not sure what to try, I had the jerk chicken which packs a spice punch but was very flavorful. Each main dish comes with a choice of two sides! read more

During lunch today my co-worker and I decided to stop by and check out this new gem. We were not disappointed! The inside is very nice and comfortable and the staff...amazing! We were greeted and even given waters while we waited for our to go order. They were so friendly and nice, it felt like they really cared about the food they were producing. It got busy fast so the food took a minute to come out, but we walked in the moment they opened so that's understandable. The jerk chicken was full of flavor and not dry at all. The sides are all homemade and delicious. I did not try the dessert but I should have! The wings were large and incredibly crispy. I tried the D Town sauce and was pleasantly surprised as I am typically a Buffalo person. They also mentioned that on Saturdays they will have Ox Tail! We will be coming back for that for sure. Please support this new small business, they are wonderful! read more

Hours and days closed change randomly. Tried to eat here 4 times and was always closed. As of 3/23 sign on door doesn't open until noon Website says 10:30. One attempt said 11am. Now noon. Also went twice and closed on days not posted as closed read more

If you are looking for Caribbean food, this place is a must. Attentive staff, nice atmosphere, and a great selection of dishes. Happened to be "Soul Food Sunday" so the section was a little different on the menu than other reviews I had seen. We had the fried catfish with Mac and cheese and candied yams and jerk chicken with collard greens and potato salad. Let me tel you, the collard greens and potato salad were beyond amazing! I don't like collard greens ever and I ate half of my husband's portion. Also tried Jamaican Kola. It does not taste like a typical cola! It has a hint of fruit or cream. Almost like a cola meets cream/orange soda. Very hard to describe but good! Must try! Next time I want to try to catch when they have snapper. The pictures of reviews of the snapper looked amazing and if it's anything like the catfish it will be well seasoned, crispy and well presented! Thank you for a great food experience. We will definitely be back to try more dishes! read more

This place is clearly still working out the kinks but the food was so delicious on my first visit that I feel comfortable leaving a five-star review. Got the jerk chicken with plantains and mac and cheese as my side (I wanted rice but it was taking longer than expected so I got the Mac and cheese instead - glad I did because it was great)! Everything was full of flavor - jerk chicken was perfectly spiced without being overly salted and plantains were among the best I've had. I'm excited to try the other items on the menu and see what new dishes they try. The space is great but it seems like they're still figuring things out in terms of service flow; however it did not result in any practical issues while dining there. read more

We want to come back so we can try them collard greens and various other menu items.... read more

Great food and great people. Don't hesitate to try this spot. Best first impression for a new restaurant that I've experienced.

Look at their web page--it clearly says they are closed every day except Sunday for 8 hours. I kid you not, yet yelp has them open every day, yet they seem to be open when they please. So impossible to eat here with no established hours and no menu on their web that has not been changed in 2 years. I want to est there but it helps if the owners are here. This seems to be an issue. read more

It's great to have more diversity in Tucson's local cuisine, especially close to the Air Force base. The restaurant has great lighting and modern decor. Service was great. I had the jerk chicken salad with goat cheese on a bed of spinach and arugula with a cup of dressing on the side. Saturdays has curry goat and oxtails, which I look forward to trying. Prices are a little high, but the food is quality (no iceberg lettuce salads). I'd dine there again. read more

Best Jamaican food outside of Jamaica that I've had! This restaurant is truly a gathering place for community. Dolly and her staff make sure everyone feels welcome and are well-fed. Saw a FB post so thought we'd give it a try. Really nice and cheerful inside. Menu is on the chalkboard to your right when you walk in. Each entree comes with 2sides. Sit anywhere you live and a waitress will come take your order. A little confusing since there are no signs that let you know this. Waitresses were all super friendly (special nod to the blonde waitress who has the most infectious, beautiful smile). Wait staff did seem a little confused as to who was doing what and when; which in turn confused the cooks. Both my partner and I had the fried chicken; sides were potato salad, sweet potato mash and Mac and cheese. Chicken was good, skin crispy and light, pieces cut weird which may be why it was slightly over done. Needed heaps more seasoning. Sweet potato mash was light, fluffy, mapley (Pamism), delicious dream (would take a bath in it). Potato salad tad bit more liquidy than normal but flavorful. Mac and cheese was good, definitely homemade but a bit dry and again needed heaps more seasoning. We ended up sharing a banana pudding. Holy cow, I would have started with that; one of the best ones I have ever had. (Ease up on the caramel inside and drizzle with a whisky caramel on top). The ox tails looked amazing as did the catfish. Strange location, hard to see from the road but seek and ye shall find. Hopefully God will bless them and help them become a profitable staple to the Tucson food scene. We will see you again! read more

Janet & Ray's - Catfish mac & cheese potato salad - Caribbean Near Me - Tucson, Arizona

Wish they were in San Diego. Some of the best caribe/soul food I've had since Georgia. The Catfish is amazing, crisp not oily, TENDER and a good piece of fish. They were out of the collard greens and I was told to try the cabbage, Wow what a surprise, sweet and jerk spicy. I also had the potato, really good. Generous helping, generous service. If I'm back in Tucson, I'll be back to Janet and Rays! read more

I got the jerk chicken with sweet potato fries and Mac and cheese. My husband got fried catfish with onion rings and Mac and cheese. The food was so good and had amazing flavorful. We had to wait over 30 minutes for our food. They offered us shrimp and grits while we waited which was so good. It is spicy so beware if you don't like heat. I'm knocking off 1 star because we had to wait so long for our food and had to ask for water refills and napkins and stuff like that. BUT I will totally come back!! Staff was really nice and the food was quality. read more
