His estimate was reasonable, removal of the old asphalt was quick and neat. He fit us in between bigger jobs and laid new asphalt, being careful of our existing plants and rock work. Job came in at estimate and the new, smooth surface really made a difference for my disabled dad. This week, after texting James, l got the driveway sealed. Care was taken to clean the surface, fill superficial cracks from tree roots and the new seal makes it look like new. We ended up canceling the job due to the very poor business practices. First of all when my husband called to set up a date for the driveway paving, Mr. Steel told him that his app't book was in his truck and he would double check the date and get back to him that same night. Two or three days later I finally called and he said he thought sure he had contacted us. He had not but gave him the benefit of the doubt. He said he had us on his schedule for 7:30am today, 10/21/15. So this morning at about 7:45 when he still hadn't shown up I called and left a message. He called back a few minutes later and here's what he told me... "I worked late last night." And he seemed a bit miffed when I explained that that wasn't really my problem. "Well it wasn't just that I worked late but I have other customers too and I got backed up because of the rain. I can be there later today." I said that a phone call would have been nice last night or even this morning and asked when was "later"...he said probably around noon. "Probably" "around" noon? Seriously? Amazing! I cancelled. So when things get "backed up" you just ignore other customers and show up when you feel like it? No thoughts of courtesy phone calls? I'm done. read more

We met with 5 different contractors to get bids on fixing our front steps. The walkway was all broken down and becoming quite a hazard. It's a steep hill that initially had rotted railroad ties loosely placed into the dirt and every time we walked over it, it was apparent that an accident was just a matter of time. James was the only one who not only came in less expensive than everyone else, but also had better ideas. He replaced all the ties, mounted them into the hill correctly, and made sure they were properly reinforced. Then he filled all the gaps with concrete and step stones to give us a very nice, wide, custom stepped walkway. The finished product is truly a work of art. James' personality shines and it's obvious that he cares about his work quality and the happiness of his clients. We were given choices and opportunities for input all the way through the project- he even made a spot for our daughters to put their hand prints in at our request. James is a true professional. There's the old adage - "Cheap, Fast or Good, pick two". It is rare to find someone who can do all three, and when I do, I like to share it. Our 5,000 sqft asphalt driveway was a decade old, and was holding up okay - no cracks yet, but the weather was leaving it pitted and grey. I knew I was just biding my time unless I got it sealed soon. I had heard good things about James Steel Engineering, so I gave him a call. I was a little disappointed when he said he had a two week backlog, but figured it meant he did good work , and waited. He ended up with an opening sooner than he thought, so he came out and measured, and gave me a very competitive price. I had priced out doing it myself, and figured it would cost me more than half what he quoted, and would take me four full days, and I would not get results this good, so I agreed right then and there.
