This review is 7 years too late since we meant to provide a review after the excellent job that Modern Paving did with our landscaping back in 2019. Attached are pics of how great they still look after 7 years, a testament to the quality of their work! Thank you, David & Kim! read more

Kim and David are a great team! Very easy to work with, honest and reliable people. Their crew was great as well. They were all polite and considerate of us and our neighbors. Hard workers, they got the job done in four days. I have used other paver companies in the past so I knew what I was looking for. Their pricing was very straightforward, with no surprises and extremely reasonable. Kim and David have great ideas and know what they're doing. We had quite a few areas of yard that were overgrown with weeds - they needed to be cleaned up and replaced with weed barrier and mulch. Then we had a large area in the backyard that needed pavers where we will be installing a cedar shed. You can see from the Before and After pictures what a transformation it has been! Highly recommend Modern Paving with Kim and David. Did I mention that they got the job done in four days? My friends and family were all amazed at how quickly the transformation occurred and how nice it looks now! read more

Two years ago, we began work on a retaining wall with another contractor, only to discover later that it had not been built correctly. The structure was poorly executed, and we were left with a frustrating and costly problem. That's when we reached out to Modern Paving. From the very beginning, David, the manager, stood out for his professionalism and deep expertise. He took the time to thoroughly assess the situation, explain the issues in plain terms, and lay out a clear plan to fix the defective construction. What impressed me most was his integrity--he didn't try to cut corners or offer a quick cosmetic fix. Instead, he focused on doing the job right, ensuring the wall would be structurally sound and built to last. The workmanship from David and his team was meticulous. Every detail was addressed, from the foundation work to the finishing touches, and their precision was evident in every step. They approached the project like true craftsmen, combining technical know-how with pride in their work. Modern Paving is not the cheapest option, and frankly, that's a good thing. You are paying for subject matter experts who value quality over speed, and honesty over empty promises. In an industry where it can be hard to find contractors you can fully trust, David and his crew stand out as the gold standard. Their professionalism, skill, and commitment to doing the right thing make them, without question, the best in the area. I would recommend Modern Paving without hesitation to anyone who wants their project done right the first time--or in our case, done right the second time. read more

Modern Paving is terrific! We highly recommend them for complete, top quality, well designed work! David is great. He has a fantastic sense of design and is able to see what can be done even when looking at an uninspiring existing installation. We talked to many paving contractors to replace our driveway, walkway, and front porch. Our previous lack of imagination was matched by other contractors lack of vision as to what could be done. David opened up our eyes to the potential vision he could see that would totally improve and change everything for the better. After consulting many other paving contractors, who all offered the same tired designs, David was an inspiring breath of fresh air. He suggested radical changes that initially were shocking (get rid of some old tired landscaping, remove a sidewalk, adding a front garden, widening and adding curves and flair to a walkway, eliminating an unnecessary step (replaced with a gentle slope), and more. We also had a damaged section of our back yard concrete patio replaced by pavers. David's imaginative design was matched by his high technical knowledge of what needed to be built. His crew was extremely competent and careful. Even when the unexpected happened and the crew discovered that the old driveway being removed was laid directly on the water supply line (which should have been way beneath the driveway), the crew extremely carefully removed the old driveway without interrupting water service. It was quite amazing. The water line replacement by a plumbing contractor, coordinating with Modern Paving, was part of our larger project, but the careful demolition by the Modern Paving crew prevented an emergency of a broken water line (which would not have been their fault) and allowed the plumbing crew to replace it as part of the scheduled work. The careful attention to detail by the Modern Paving crew led by Emilcar was impressive. The installation was flawless and looks beautiful. David was on site almost every day, supervising the work. (Not that they needed supervising, as the crew were experts). As part of the work, we had landscape lighting installed. Zach designed where the lights were to be installed and even installed temporary lighting (before burying wires and permanently mounting fixtures) so that we could make sure everything was perfect. We even added some additional fixtures when we saw how wonderful it looked. We highly recommend Modern Paving. read more

Modern Paving installed a new paver patio/pool deck as well as landscape lighting and irrigation in our backyard. They did an excellent job. We had not engaged in a project like this before and didn't know a lot of the details. David and Kim were very professional and responsive to all questions and concerns. At the same time, we were having the pool refinished. David was very helpful in coordinating efforts with other contractors. I would work with them again on any future projects. read more

No shocker here another 5-star review for Modern Paving. We had an extensive redo of our front and backyard and we were hesitant for a while in doing it because we had heard some nightmare stories. We did our research met with quite a few companies. When MP came in we were automatically impressed with the professionalism and felt comfortable with both Steve and Dave and decided to go with them. We felt that there was no BS with them which we totally appreciated. The company has amazing communication we have never worked with a company that kept us in the loop the way they did and came in and checked on the job site multiple times a day. The workers that work for MP are amazing, helpful, friendly, worked their asses off and always on time. Good people. Dave T. is a Rockstar and should give lessons on how a company/team should be run. So knowledgeable, detail oriented and a standup guy. The crew and Dave were here for 4 weeks and they were a pleasure to have around. Dave helped us through the whole process, and we can say it was seamless. We did front and back pavers, artificial turf, pea gravel, large flagstone front, beautiful sitting wall in the back and it all looks amazing. It is all stunning. We have had quite a few neighbors ask for their number and we have gladly given them the number and the heads up that this team is the best! Thank you to the Modern Paving Crew for making this home improvement project so painless. You guys deserve 10 stars. read more

After much delay (due to the Covid-shutdown), we recently had our large rear patio and front entrance way paved. MP also replaced eight posts that held up our patio cover. They also re-did some street-facing fencing. We are very happy with the timeliness and the quality of the work. We appreciated having one vendor do the stone and the woodwork and integrating the two. All communications were professional and courteous. We worked with Kim for the design and contract. Santos led the crew that worked on the patio. Rafael did the fences. Rick was the director of operations. He ensured that some extra wrap-up work that my wife wanted got done. We recommend them highly. read more

Six weeks after MP did my backyard, I had them come out and give me quote for the front of my house. David came out and we spent some time figuring out what would look best and after much thought and deliberation, I decided to take out the entire front yard, about 1,200 square feet of grass and cement walkways and put down a paver courtyard that spans the entire front of the house. The only request that I had is that I wanted the same crew that did my backyard as they did an outstanding job. This is one of the hardest working crews I have ever worked with. They were on time every morning, they cleaned up every evening...they were a pleasure to see every day. The courtyard took about 6 days and although I had a few change orders mid-project David and his crew had no problem staying on track and fitting it all in. My courtyard looks incredible. I can't wait for them to do my driveway next year. read more

We have the work done for our backyard project (large scale pavers, turf, decomposed granite), and we're super happy with the result. Kim, David, Zach and crew were awesome. They were on time, friendly, and very attentive to our requests along the way. This is one of the few companies that we've worked with that left the areas around our house cleaner than when they've started. Highly recommended! read more

Kim and David are fantastic! Great ideas, tons of experience, took time to hear our thoughts, not at all pushy, super friendly! You will love working with this team! read more

Modern Paving replaced a wooden retaining wall of ours with a new one using Allan Block. First Kim came out and gave us a reasonable bid on the project, giving us quotes both for an Allan Block wall or a wooden one like we had before. The Allan Block was actually a little less expensive and it looks a whole lot better so we went with that. They informed us when they were ready to start (materials had arrived), and the communication continued throughout the project, first with David as Zach was out sick, then with Zach for the rest of the time. Either David or Zach came every morning to check on things and to inform us on progress. The communication was probably the best we've ever had from contractors working on a project at our house. The workers were amazing, transporting all those heavy blocks to our backyard and skillfully arranging them into a wall. They also installed an excellent drainage system. The resulting wall is frankly a pleasure to look at. We were also impressed at how they cleaned up the work site and our driveway where materials were stored at the end of every day. And when the job was finished, excess material and the portapotty were removed right away. They followed through on everything they promised and built us a beautiful wall. We highly recommend them! read more

I would give David and his team at Modern Paving a 10 star rating if I could! From the initial contact with Kim, the designer, who put together a fabulous plan to put in a patio where we never had one, to replace an aged 60s lower patio, and to put in steps so we can reach the top of the slope in the back of our yard, then to the next step of planning the details and logistics with David, the ENTIRE process was easy and professional! David is heart and soul of this operation - professional, knowledgable and flexible! You will get the end result you want with his help. Roberto and the crew who were here every day, worked very hard on each area to be sure it was professionally installed and exactly what we wanted! Highly skilled crew who left the place organized and cleaned up each evening! The end result is so amazing. We will definitely call them back when we replace our front porch and driveway! read more

Kim (Senior Designer): Kim has given variety of suggestions, advice and design to us with great patience (6months!) and flexibility against our floating budget and desire. She has listened our desire and concerns very carefully and edited the basic plan more than 5 times. And finally provided very reasonable and fit to our special and personal requirements. She has considered curb view, functions, property value, color matching, future expansion capability, budget etc too. David and Zack (Project managers): David and Zack have explained technical details on the actual process at the site quite well. They have found out potential risks and proper and reasonable solution to us clearly and swiftly. The project hasbeen completed within planned period with mior modification. They have done some minor modification based on our desire. quickly too. Crews: Their crew has provided professional job. We are very happy with their acurate, timely and higest quality as seen in past works in their online photo. They are friendly and answer most of our questions while their supervisers are not at the site. We highly recommend the team for any tricky projects. read more

I replaced a large driveway with Belgard pavers and added a porch with bullnose. I received three quotes, and while the prices were similar, what stood out was; Kim and David, and the thoroughness and clear pricing. They were flexible and very accommodating when I made changes to the job- no surprises or gotchas. The crew was on time, clean, polite and super hard working. They estimated up to 7 days but completed the job in 5 days! So great. and even took extra care with relocating sprinklers. At the beginning and during the project they told me they wanted to ensure a successful outcome that I would love. Goal accomplished! thank you read more

We love the results and have received many, many compliments! Communication was excellent and the team was hardworking and meticulous. Absolutely recommend them!!! read more

I bid this out to 3 vendors as we have to get HOA approvals and their timely responses, thorough attitude, covid safety/mask compliance and no pressure candor (I asked a lot of Qs) helped place their competitive bid in the top tier right away. I liked their local/family run biz (vs corporate large bulk discount mailer types of places) and total transparency when it came to explaining any glitches we might encounter. (I have big tree roots which I knew would need grinding up and also knew my timetable was tight as the HOA wants projects on and off the plate fast for minimal disruption) During covid many companies make promises but in actuality are months out in booking/follow through w/all the home repairs and supply chain glitches, but Modern Paving kept me apprised every step of the way to ensure we stayed on time/budget; even when they hit rebar mixed in with the cement during demo and explained it required a different disposal fee/mechanism, David was fair and forthright w/the add on, the crew themselves were VERY clean and tidy after every shift and seemed to genuinely have fun as a team together, making for a pleasant/jovial friendly experience. From Kim, the initial point of contact/designer to Roberto the project foreman and David himself who came out to check on the installation of a root barrier which I'd requested, the process was seamless. I'd like to use them again to do the shared pathway w/my neighbor's place and have already given their names to two other homeowners who have popped by to give kudos. For me, the communication, honesty and follow through/accountability of direct personnel gave me the confidence to refer them out to others. I really didn't want to write this review. I'll be honest. We're all so busy; most of us can understand that. BUT the folks at MODERN PAVING really do need a SHOUT OUT and I feel that I really owe it to them after how well they took care of me during my outdoor remodel project, and how HAPPY I am with the final results! First off, I just need to say right up front, "Choose these guys!" You won't be sorry. They have great communication, know what they are doing, their prices are reasonable, they are GOOD people and I enjoyed doing business with them. I would have paid more for this project had I'd known what a great team and top shelf service I would be getting! Kim and Rick were a pleasure to work with; Design and Construction in Action! What a pleasure! I felt totally comfortable with both of them knowing I was in good hands. And David T is a Rockstar! A complete professional who's very knowledgeable and a relatable guy, and who made sure I knew what was going on throughout the whole process. I had my front and backyards remodeled by MODERN PAVING. They did my driveway and walkways (Calstone Quarry stone) in front and a backyard patio, some synthetic grass, and a fabulous sitting wall which was a great suggestion by the design team. Short and Sweet: Modern Paving does Outstanding work at an excellent price.  The crew was so hardworking and talented and kept such a clean and tidy work site; my wife was impressed and that was a great relief! Kim and Richard were very detail oriented, friendly, and put me at ease while going thru all the different parts of the project! And one of the best things was they all seemed to really like their jobs and the work they do. MODERN PAVING! Their work and price were truly superior. Nick read more

I had a great experience working with Modern Paving on my backyard project. We had a couple bids from a few reputable vendors in this area before we decided to move forward with Modern Paving. Kim was our designer. I was really impressed that she was able to give me a lot really good ideas after just taking a quick walk in my backyard. After we've signed the contract, David gave me a follow up call and we discussed our project. I had a few questions about the color and size of the boarder pavers and the circle paver kit. He gave me his professional opinions and thoroughly explained the pros/cons of the options. I ended up just following his recommendations because he is an expert. Zach oversaw our project. He and his staff are super friendly and helpful. Zach is very knowledgeable and answered all the questions I had about the job. After demolishing our old shed, Zach ran some new pipes underneath the new pavers to make sure we could easily reconnect the power and water on the other side of the backyard. Fair price, great quality, top notch service, and friendly staff. read more

I'm so thankful I used Modern Paving for our front and back yard remodel. Kim came out and met with me to talk about the project and then provided an estimate. Once we decided to go with Modern Paving, I received a handwritten thank you note! Kim told me about David who was going to be leading the project and gave me a sense of when he would be in touch and a window for the project start time. A few days later David reached out to introduce himself and gave me an update on the start date. From start to finish, the project was smooth sailing. David was amazing and always available for questions or anything I needed. The team that worked on the project each day were kind, clean, and hard working. My daughter loved giving them popsicles, talking to them, and watching them work. The project was done so quickly that friends couldn't believe it. I highly recommend Modern Paving! read more

Great experience with Modern Paving who redid the walls and driveway in the front of our house. The whole process was smooth from beginning to end. Kim was prompt to respond when I reached out for a quote. She provided references and addresses where I could check the color of pavers. David and Zac oversaw the work while it was being done, and I greatly appreciate the very good communication, as well as their availability for my questions. The crew with Gustavo, Jose, Luis did a top notch job, with great attention to details (and I am very picky). My driveway now looks beautiful, the best in the neighborhood!!! Steve and David are simply the best in the area. They are very professional and deliver high quality work for a competitive price. I've used their services twice in the last few years. My first experience with Modern Paving was a fairly hardcore hardscape job to renovate our front yard. This consisted of dirt removal, installing a French drain. Hand laid Roman stone retaining wall, and finished off by laying a beautiful, low maintenance turf. Steve was instrumental in working with us to make material decisions based on our budget and preferences. Steve was very transparent throughout the process, letting me know any issues that might arise and the possible workaround or added costs. Three years later, the turf and surrounding area looks amazing. Oh ya, they finished on-time -amazing! The second time around, I hired Modern Paving to remove and replace my driveway and add a sidewalk to the eroding street. This also included a walkway around the house finishing off the previous job. Again, Steve was very responsive and transparent about pricing and the process. The finish work is simply amazing and a focal point of our property. To add, we had a bit of an issue with Public Works and their approval process. Steve handled the situation with the outmost professionalism and to our satisfaction. We are extremely grateful for his service and would recommend him to anyone in the area. One piece of advice is to plan ahead. Modern Paving is in high demand which means you will need to be patient with scheduling. read more

Modern Paving did an excellent job on our backyard patio. We spoke with a few paver specialists and felt most comfortable moving forward with Steve and his team. The project started AND finished earlier than the timeline we were originally told. The speed at which the crew worked were incredible and the craftmanship was flawless. Similar to other reviewers, I would like to stress that the crew was very friendly and CLEAN. When they finished the patio, it looked as if they were never there! We will need to re-do our driveway in the future and we will definitely use Modern Paving again. Thank you Modern Paving! Our family loves hanging out in the ndw backyard! read more

Why doesn't yelp offer a 6 star review...After shopping around with multiple landscape contractors and designers to take on my backyard and side step project it was a breath of fresh air when Steve came by for a visit, because he accomplished both. His attention to detail was better then any of the other 10 bids I shopped around previously. He took what I envisioned in my head, threw it down on a sketch and delivered it 10x better in the final product. I really appreciated his input and how he listened to and understood what I was trying to accomplish. He wasn't one of the "just tell me what u want me to do and I will do it" kinda guys. His expertise on what would look good in my yard based on my house and style was spot on. While still keeping everything in budget. When it came down to starting the job the crew was very nice and worked hard till everything was done perfect. David the project manger and Steve were there everyday to make sure everything went smoothly and immediately addressed even the smallest details if they were just a tad off. Even if it created more work on their end. Not one single corner was cut on the job and was shown when everything was done. Not to mention their pricing was equal to or beat everyone else who provided a quote. Could not recommend Modern Paving enough and hope to do more work with them Very soon!! Thanks again Steve,David and crew! read more

We contacted Modern Paving because our old front-yard retaining wall was starting to buckle. From the start, Steve was very professional and responsive to my calls and emails. He presented all of the various options for me to consider - both in terms of price and style/strength. The project pricing was very competitive to other companies in the area. Steve really took ownership of the project, even with dealing with the City of Belmont to obtain the necessary approvals for permitting (this was not a simple process). He communicated with me on a regular basis with any requests for information and on the status of the permits. Once we finally had the permits from the City, we agreed upon a specific project timeline that worked for us and them. In terms of project execution, Steve and his hardworking team adhered to the timeline and were very respectful to my property and the neighborhood and pedestrians. He let me know upfront about the impacts to my landscaping as well as the need to use our driveway for supplies, etc. The finished product is absolutely beautiful! In addition, a drainage system was installed to alleviate issues we usually have during the rainy season. Even after the project was over, Steve met with us to address any concerns that we had. This retaining wall should last a lifetime and will definitely add value to our home! I would recommend Modern Paving to anyone in the Peninsula area! read more

Modern Paving just completed a job for my 93-year-old father on the peninsula. My dad often harkens back to the days when a person's word meant something and they took pride in their work. Well, he loves Dave, Kim, Roberto, and the rest of the crew at Modern Paving and that is saying something. They were so kind and accommodating to the numerous parameters and complexities of this job. Dave and Kim came up with a variety of options that were far more attractive and cost-effective than any other bid. They offered numerous ways to improve the job and when my dad was not happy about something, they changed it straight away. It is rare to rave about work done as well as actually working with a contractor, and yet, I rave. Do not hesitate to call them for their commitment to excellent craftsmanship, exceptional customer service, and an attuned eye for offering economy where it can be realistically managed. We recently completed our backyard renovation, a mixture of artificial turf and pavers. We are very pleased with the final product and had a great experience working with Modern Paving. The project manager, David was also exceptional. He was very responsive to our questions and needs. His crew was very polite, friendly, and professional. We exceeded our planned budget with this project so my recommendation is target below budget in anticipation that some unforeseen item may arise. We were referred to modern paving through a friend of ours. Kim came out and walked us through our options on what we could do with our split level backyard. After a few visits she came back with a mock up of our shared vision and we were sold. We broke ground right as covid came into play and while that was out of MP's control took our project longer than we had hoped. David and crew were very receptive to feedback and if we weren't happy with something they took care of it. David also provided additional design ideas that we hadn't thought of and we appreciated his expertise. The end result of our project is an amazing new living space we hadn't had before.
