Jerk Chicken

Food is amazing! It is the most authentic JA food in the united states. Everything is full of flavor and very filling. Service is great! Everyone is so friendly and helpful. They make great recommendations. Ambiance is a fun atmosphere! There isnt a lot of room inside to sit. It can get loud in there, so definitely not a good place to have an intimate dinner. Everyone wishes they were open during the week. They are opened Thursday, friday, Saturday

Fire. Amazing. Fantastic. Food lived up to the name, everything was seasoned to perfection. The jerk chicken is a must try. Extremely large portion and the entire meal was outstanding. I couldn't believe how good the veggies were, & I will be getting an additional side of the plantains next time I go. There are a couple of tables, but this food is great for takeout. Support this small business!!

Definriely a very nice Caribbean restaurant. I thought the prices were very reasonable, the…read moreportions were great, and the flavors were pretty much on point. I tried several items, including the brown stew chicken, rice and peas, cabbage, and the beef patties. The brown stew chicken was delicious. I got it in the large size and it was indeed quite large. The chicken is seasoned well but not too spicy. It's tender, and although I tend not to like dark meat, I really enjoyed it from this place. They served it with potatoes, which were nicely cooked, and carrots, which went really well with the sauce. You get 2 sides with your meal so I choose the rice with peas and the cabbage. The cabbage was very flavorful and just tasted homey. Several other vegetables mixed in too. They gave me a ton of rice and peas, which is great because I thought it was delicious. Soft rice, especially with the chicken, just mixed perfectly. Delicious, delicious, delicious. The beef patties were also very tasty. The inside is in a way almost creamy. It's filled with juicy meat, and the outside stayed nice and crisp. Very nice. All in all, definitely a great place. One of the better Caribbean spots in Pittsburgh for sure. I'd order delivery from them again (I think they are delivery only).

Discovered Island Spice after reading a list of black owned restaurants in Pittsburgh. Discovered…read morethis place, not too far from me that I never knew existed. It's in a small strip mall at the edge of Carnegie (almost in Heidelburg) where Family Video used to be and next to a Subway. The menu was appealing because I love Caribbean food, and I'm sick of our usually takeout places. Called ahead and ordered. While they have some seating, they were not currently doing dine-in (this review was written during Coronavirus time). When I entered the first thing I noticed was that the place was spotless, which I find to always be a great quality in a restaurant. The gentleman working (Donald) was polite and pleasant. He was just finishing up our order when I arrived. I was excited to see a variety of Carribean bottled beverages in the cooler. My 8 year old daughter was even happier when I brought her home two bottles of pineapple guava juice that is hard to find. The portions are huge! For the meals, you pick your meat, cooking style, a veggie and a starch. My husband ordered jerk pork, with Mac and cheese and coleslaw. I ordered jerk chicken with Mac and cheese and a tossed salad. I also ordered an extra side of plantains (not many places serve it around here), and then fish fingers for my kids (which are $6 and come with a healing portion of fries- not mentioned on the menu). As you can see from the photos, their servings of Mac and cheese fill both side dish areas of the take out container and even spill out a bit. It was creamy, and not a super duper cheesy taste. I thought it was a refreshing break from spice of the jerk chicken. The side of coleslaw was quite generous- no itty bitty cups here. The tossed salad was very fresh- no bagged mix here- with thin slices of a few other veggies mixed in. I liked my husband's pork a lot and will probably order it next time. It was significantly less spiced than my chicken (granted I'm not a big best-seeker, though I love jerk). The pork was very tender. My chicken was unfortunately a little overcooked and dry, but damn the flavor was good. The plantains were a delicious addition. My kids were very happy with their fish fingers and fries (and shared in our sides). My kids are 8 and 10 and eat a decent amount- we still have significant leftovers. All of this food for about $51. So glad that I found this place- will definitely return.

Going here was like being in an episode of Twin Peaks. After putting the food from the steam-table…read moreinto a styrofoam take-away container (which they do whether you eat-in or take out), I told the cashier I was eating there. So instead of giving it to me, he put it into a microwave (you're never supposed to microwave in stryofoam because of chemical leaching). And he only put it in for a minute, so I was doubly scratching my head when he gave it to me. The food was barely lukewarm when I tried a small bite. I immediately gave it back, demanded my money back, and asked him if it had been sitting there like that all day, to which he shrugged. He tried to input a refund transaction into the computer but couldn't, then had to call his manager on a cell phone - asking me if cash back instead of credit card was ok. Somehow, the cash option evaporated, and he kept inputting something into the computer. I asked him if was going to give me the refund and he told me "Yes, you can go now." Meanwhile, he kept waiting on customers coming in and giving them food possibly full of bacteria - including an elderly guy. He was also serving soup to customers from a giant kettle on the stove with no flame under it. Did this place have any heating elements at all? When he finally told me I should see a credit statement on my card, I left, told the elderly guy not to eat his food, and made an online complaint to the county health dept. The weirdest part of all of this is that I had been here a few times previously and everything had been fine

The unassuming old bank building is easy to find. Street parking behind it wasn't tough. There's a warning on the front door that this is a "takeout" establishment -- but there were plenty of tables. You can totally dine there! If you want alcohol, then definitely get your food to go. This is another place that has sadly gone person-free at the front with an ordering tablet. You lose so much in the lack of warm greeting, lack of assistance with ordering, etc. I don't like this tech trend! Setting that aside, we were able to order fairly easily. We had to fish around in the menu to find descriptions --- the print-outs and overhead menu had no details. The food: I had -- and would recommend -- the Flava Bowl with shrimp. That bowl was so packed, the lid almost didn't fit! Roughly 10 medium-sized sautéed shrimp over rice & peas (you get a choice of that or maduros or rice), with perfectly-cooked plantains & sautéed onions and red peppers. I had them add avocado. A good add, AND --- I sprinkled on some of their house made green hot sauce, a nice citrusy bit of heat. My husband was less high on his dish, the plantain sandwich- aka, the Jibarito with pollo ala plancha. He said it was quite dry, but it got better as he got some of the sauce (not sure what it was). It took 30 minutes to get our food, but the poor guy in the kitchen was totally alone fixing all of these orders (cooking, packing them up)! He was so apologetic; we felt bad for him. Our meal was good, though. The place clearly has a lot of heart. We'll definitely be back. Gotta try the mofongo.

Man listen here! I…read morehad been following Caribbean Vybz on Instagram and liking and drooling over just about every picture they posted for a while, but just never got to visit as by the time I got home from work they were either closed or had ran out of what I wanted. Fast forward a year or so and much to my joy they announced via social media that they had stopped cooking out of their home and started a food truck! One day I saw that they would be on Larimer Avenue in the Larimer section of the city so I made my way there expeditiously as T.I. would say. LOL! I already knew that I was going to go with their Curry shrimp with cabbage and rice & peas! I also got a Tropical Rhythms Island Mango drink to wash it all down. A few minutes later I had my food and made my way home. You guessed it, expeditiously! LOL! As soon as I started to dig in I was taken back as I hadn't had Jamaican food this good since Mama Rose on nearby Mayflower Street in the late 90's! The shrimp was perfectly cooked and full of flavor! The cabbage was tender and the rice and peas were delicious as well! My food was so good that I told my wife about it and ended up going back the same day to get us their Jerk chicken for dinner. Unfortunately it was near the end of the night and they had ran out of cabbage, but gave us extra chicken which more than made up for not having anymore cabbage. The jerk chicken was absolutely incredible! Very authentic and just as delicious! Be sure to follow them on Instagram @caribbeanvybzllc to see where they will be next! I still can't believe that authentic Jamaican food like this can come out of a food truck!

There are a few options around Pittsburgh for Jamaican cuisine but this is certainly one of my favorites.
