Let's just say we come down to the Del Mar area a couple of times a year, and we died in many restaurants and this is our favorite. We even had the same waiter who is a really nice fellow with a beard. We sat with an ocean view, and even though it was dark, you can see the waves because they have floodlights outside. It's been a while since we died there but each time we've had a great experience. The cocktails are excellent. The wine list is great, and the food is delicious. The waiter is happy to offer suggestions. Oh yeah, and the dessert too. We definitely will be back here and always recommend recommended to friends who are visiting the area. read more

I had made reservations on a Monday for a party of 4 at 7 PM, hoping to catch the sunset. I requested a booth table inside facing the ocean. Upon arrival we were greeted and seating at a table I requested...thank you! The place has a beautiful ocean view location and is extremely popular. Large parties, friend and family gatherings, this place was packed. Considering how busy it was the servers never missed a beat. We ordered cocktails, followed by Crispy Calamari, Grilled Prawns, Heirloom Tomato Burrata Salad, Mussels, Jumbo Lump Crabcake, Mixed Seafood Pot, Togarashi Spice crusted Ahi and Surfing Steak. I'll start by saying it's a shame to see how downhill the service and value at Jake's has gone in recent years. My family and I have frequented this terrific location and remember great service and good food quality. Unfortunately, it seems that management and ownership is addicted to shrinkflation and never returned to standards. Serving expensive entrees is expected with a waterfront location. But, serving product that was clearly frozen is unacceptable. Reheating food in a microwave that was left to go cold because of no runners is unacceptable. Also, it's clear that they need to rethink their hiring. With such competition for entry-level, bartending, serving their must be, how on earth can they hire people who don't seem to really value their job. It's often the Gen-Z gaze off (no eye contact), the "what now" vibe when needing to request something they actually forgot. I've heard many similar stories from friends. It's a shame. I guess we'll see how long Jakes can hand on by the kindness of unwitting tourists, and how much the ownership keeps exploiting it. There's many other great choices right nearby... try them. Made a reservation at 10am for a Sunday brunch. They open at 10a, and we did valet parking ($8 until 4p), to avoid finding parking along the stretch since the beach was already so busy. There is a public parking lot across the street (need to pay) also if you can't find street parking. We were seated by the windows and it was nice to look at the beach and feel the breeze. Appetizers: seafood corn chowder was delicious! Calamari was pretty good too. The BBQ ribs (appetizer) were good also. They give the bbq sauce on the side. I ordered the avo toast with scrambled eggs, which was pretty big. You can add on lobster claw and knuckle too. The steak and eggs were on the smaller side (fam ordered), but steak was pretty decent. Looked more like a medallion. The poké bowl was ok... not too tasty... Don't forget to ask for soy sauce! The mixed seafood pot was just OK... Kind of a version of cioppino, but the saffron taste was pretty dominant... Orzo rice and the soup base itself was a bit on the salty side. Decent amount of seafood though. I've come here on weekdays for both lunch and dinner. It's always popular even during the week, so I can't imagine how it is on weekends. The servers here are really nice. I also was asking about wine and I appreciated our server's very honest opinions on the wine. He helped us select a wine that we all really enjoyed. Mussels: 7/10. I don't get mussels often but these were delicious. There were some mussels I was a little skeptical of eating because they weren't super opened up. I really enjoyed the broth on this one. The broth is excellent with some bread. Brussels sprouts: 7/10. Good but nothing special. Ahi tostada: 8/10. I really enjoyed this but it's not super big. Ahi sashimi: 9/10. Light and delicious. The yuzu shoyu is really good on the ahi. Ceviche: 7/10. Good but nothing super stand out. Lemon garlic roasted fish: 7/10. This is light and delicious. I think the squid ink vinaigrette is kind of cool, and it gives the dish another layer of complexity that I appreciate. Hula pie: 8/10. Only a few places do a hula pie, so whenever I see it, I know we have to get it. It's delicious as always. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing because at least it means it doesn't melt fast, but it was pretty frozen, so we needed to ask for a knife to cut into it so we could all share it. It's impossible without a knife unless you wait for it to melt. The views are phenomenal here for most of the places you can sit in the restaurant. There are windows everywhere for you to see the beautiful ocean. I think the view is a huge part of why this place is successful. We were visiting Del Mar for spring break and made a reservation at Jake's for dinner. I had been here a month before for our brunch and brunch was awesome! However. Dinner was definitely a different experience than the quality of food. We are ordered the ceviche for an appetizer, my daughter ordered the fish and chips off the kids menu, and my husband and I split the ribeye special which came with two side sides, white rice, and vegetables. The ribeye special was $80. Have we not been attending a concert nearby and needing to eat dinner on a timeline, I would've sent our steak right back to the kitchen and ordered something else. There was zero flavor. The white rice it was paired with was very bland and the vegetables or a mixture of artichoke pieces and small pieces of mushroom. I won't even talk about how unappealing it looked on our plate. I was so excited to eat here after our great brunch but dinner I would definitely not be coming back for dinner and would definitely not recommend the steak, fish, and chips or the ceviche. Great view of the ocean, decent food, great drinks, and lovely atmosphere to round out a pleasant dining experience, of course at a premium cost. Located along the coast with its own private lot (valet parking) as well as limited street parking (paid), patrons carpool and venture to this place for lunch, happy hour, and dinner for its open look at the waves rolling toward the coast. Once you've gotten your transportation situated, make your way to the host to get checked in. Ideally, you would have already made reservations but if you haven't, hopefully they can fit you in at the bar or an open table between rushes. Regardless, it does seem to take the staff a bit to get a table ready despite having reservations. Most seats in the house have a great view of the ocean and with their big clear windows, there's very little obstruction of the view. You could ask for a table closer to the window but they're all equally good in my opinion. After being seated, you'll get the drink and meal menu and be given some time to peruse before placing the order. The drink/cocktail menu is quite extensive and the bartenders here do a wonderful job at mixing it up! If there's something off menu, chances are they'll be able to make it exceptionally well. The food menu has a good mix of seafood, steak, and poultry. Appetizers like the calamari and ceviche are shareable and come out fresh and delicious. They're nothing spectacular but decent for starting a meal off among your party. The entrees have a bit more flare with many mixing up the surf and turf (surfing steak has a decent sized sirloin with a side of shrimp). The steak was seasoned fine, cooked well, and paired up nicely with the other flavors on the dish. For dessert, a must get is the hula pie which consists of ice cream, chocolate sauce, and nuts packed in a wedge of pie. This is probably the most unique thing out of their menu and rounds out the meal nicely. The staff generally is decent but the energy and availability didn't seem to match the ambiance or price point you're paying. Waters were filled most of the time but our primary service member was rarely seen. Overall, Jake's is quite a bit of a mixed bag for me when it comes to their rating. While the location is great and the food and drinks are decent on average, it just doesn't seem to have much in the categories of cohesiveness in the theme, quality of service, or portions of food. In addition to the cost for parking, you're paying premium for the location but the food is only so-so (in portion and taste). Jake's saving grace, aside from the ocean view, is probably its drinks and infamous hula pie. Otherwise, I can't see myself really craving for their food unless I was already here for the other factors. If you're looking for just location alone, there are plenty of other spots along the coast that serve delicious, unique food with great drinks and service. But Jake's view of the ocean is hard to match and thus, the high price tag, so if you're looking to mix it up, consider it for a once in a blue moon experience! read more

My boyfriend and I decided to visit Del Mar for a day-get-away~ We were recommended to visit Jake's for dinner. I am really picky about restaurants and service. I was so impressed by Jake's kitchen, ambiance, efficiency, and staff. Our food tasted phenomenal and our server, Julian was easy to get along with and really helped us make the best decisions for our dinner. We loved how honest he was. This transparency helped make our date that much better. We were also impressed on how the hosts accommodated us as walk-ins. We were honored to visit Jake's and be treated so nicely. Service was excellent but their chef had a heavy hand on the salt. We each ordered the fried taco, and soup. All three of us returned the fried tacos. Salt must have been on sale! We were greeted very warmly and seated in a corner prime spot to gaze out at the beach,,, our server Michael was very attentive and professional. He took care of us and we felt it. When on a sister adventure, there are no limits! And enjoying a fine meal on the beach of Del Mar is no exception. We enjoyed a nice walk from our time share and strolled right in when they opened. We were sat down at a wonderful corner ocean view table. Our server, Julian, was amazing! He recommended the brussel sprouts as our appetizer, which were phenomenal! Matter of fact we have him what we were looking at and decided on our entire menu. Seafood hotpot had so much seafood and flavor. And the scallops melted in our mouths. Jake's in Del Mar has been here since the early 1980's. The actual building has morphed from a garage to now a restaurant with unobstructed views of the beach, and that's the main draw for me. The menu is very similar to Duke's, which offers a mix of Hawaiian and California casual food favs and drinks. There's something delish for everyone, but keep Nin mind the menu liens towards seafood. After a disappointing breakfast earlier somewhere else, we came here for brunch and to see the beach. We ordered the Fresh Fish cesar salad which includes an anchovy dressing and topped with Ahi tuna. This salad was enough to share and even our portions was substantial and delish. The crispy calamari with crushed macadamia and the sweet and sour sauce paired nicely with the salad. And the meal of course must include their famous Hula pie of ice cream, topped with hot fudge, whipped cream and walnuts was so yummy! The hot coffee was the perfect conclusion to our brunch and dessert. The staff were cordial and helpful. The valet staff were accommodating and kept our car closeby. The hostess staff need to be more organized in seat assignments, we didn't appreciate waiting for our table, especially with so many staff members standing around. Our waitress Emily was very helpful and had a positive attitude and made sure we were good. The decor has the Hawaiian and Californian lifestyle theme but not excessive nor tacky. The restaurant was crowded and we were glad to get there just in time to get a table next to the window to watch the beach activities and ocean views. It was strange one couldn't access the beach from the restaurant. We had to walk either to the right or left and outside of Jake's to walk through an easement and into to the beach...a bit of a hassle and inconvenience. Work up an appetite after walking the beach? That's what happened to me so I stopped into Jake's. The location is prime! If you're wanting to see the sunset, the restaurant is also loaded with windows. During my visit I tried the Brussel Sprouts as an appetizer and paired them with a glass of wine. The Brussels were good as they also had shishito peppers intermixed. For my main entree I got the seafood chowder which is served with a piece of cornbread. The chowder was good, but the cornbread needed a hug from a southern grandma. Service was top tier even though I sat in the bar area. We met up with our in-laws to celebrate our new Brother-in-law's birthday. They came in from out of town for the weekend, and they chose Jake's for our family get-together. Our reservation was right at opening, 11:00 am, and we arrived early. There were already people waiting huddled wherever they could find shade. It turns out that most of the folks didn't have reservations, so they came with hopes of getting a table. Parking in Jake's lot is valet only, but there is other parking nearby. Folks with handicap placards can valet park for free. Once the doors opened, we were quickly whisked to our table. The tables are tightly arranged, but every seat was near a window so you can see the gorgeous ocean views. You can feel the breeze when the windows/doors are open. The other tables around us quickly filled. It is noisy with all of the people talking and laughing. The staff moved quickly to attend to all of the tables. It's a good idea to stay seated and tuck all of your belongings and body parts so you don't get in the way of the staff moving here and there. Our group of 6 loved everything we ordered. Portions were generous so that we could all sample each other's food. We ordered the Brussels sprouts and bbq ribs as appetizers. For entrees, we ordered fish and chips, a burger, the mixed seafood pot, a grilled chicken Mediterranean salad, and a sandwich that I didn't photograph. There is also a kids menu upon request. For some reason, it took a while for the kids menu to arrive. I think each person we requested it from got waylaid and forgot. The same thing happened with Cholula. Considering how busy it was and the high level of service the staff provided, it was understandable, and we were not in a rush. The pièce de résistance was the Hula Pie. We ordered one, but ended up with 2 because we were celebrating a birthday. These slices are HUGE! If you have something to do later, I don't recommend taking one on your own, or you will be so sleepy from overindulgence. Definitely would love to come back here again for our next special occasion. Accessibility notes: entrance is accessible for someone using a wheelchair or mobility aid, no stairs. Table spacing is TIGHT. Call ahead and ask if you can reserve a table with more space. Womens restroom is a tight squeeze and only has 2 stalls. The accessible stall might be able to accommodate a mobility aid, but not enough space to transfer from a wheelchair to the toilet. Spacing between the stalls and sinks is also tight. There was a line, so the doorway was also congested with people waiting and people trying to exit. I used a cane instead of my walker since we parked in the Jake's lot, and I managed fine in either stall. read more

Came here Wednesday night for a team dinner. Reservation was for 530 and we were seated right away. We had the little room in the front so we didn't get a view of the ocean but it was only a short walk away. The food here was ok. I ordered the calamari, Brussels sprouts, and for my entree the lemon garlic roasted fish. The views from this restaurant is amazing its beach front, the service from the staff was very good too but where they lost a star was the food. The Brussels were too soft and not crispy enough for roasted. The lemon garlic roasted fish lacked flavor it was not lemon or garlic enough and def need some salt. If you ate it with the orzo underneath then each bite was a little better but def lacked the flavor profiles I was hoping for in the name of the dish. Fish was cooked well not dry at all. We chose this to celebrate an 80th birthday, since this birthday girl wanted the mud pie dessert. We started with the calamari, which was nice thick strips (vs small rings on tentacles). At the table, we had salmon, scallops and toasted halibut. I thought the salmon was very good, cooked perfectly and with a really nice, creamy polenta. However, the roasted carrots needed to be cooked more. The dessert is good, although it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. It tastes like vanilla ice cream sundae with hot fudge and macadamia nuts. I know it's supposed to be macadamia ice cream, but it just didn't pop. The atmosphere is lively and the server was very friendly. He didn't acknowledge the birthday, which was odd, since he was overall a great sever (maybe he didn't hear?). Probably the coolest bar in Southern California. Upscale but comfortable with views on the ocean and nice tabletop seating around an "L" shaped bar. Exposed wood beams and roof - very cool interior. Riley was rocking the bar like a pro, exceptional service, quick witted and quick with the drinks. In all my years attending the races I've only been here twice... great spot to watch the races with two flat screens. Went Strawberry & Candied Walnut Salad with the Pan Roasted Chicken entree. I celebrated my husband's birthday at Jake's in Del Mar! We've eaten at their sister restaurants in Malibu (Duke's) and Kauai (Keoki's) and were excited to try Jake's! I thoroughly enjoyed the Surfing Steak, which came with sirloin, jumbo shrimp, whipped potatoes, roasted cauliflower, and chimichurri sauce. The sirloin was cooked to a nice medium rare and very tender and flavorful--it didn't need the chimichurri. I loved how juicy and succulent the shrimp were, and the potatoes were very creamy! However, the star of the dinner was their famous Hula Pie. This is what keeps us coming back to their sister restaurants. It's a heavenly dessert with macadamia nut ice cream, a chocolate cookie crust, hot fudge, toasted mac nuts, and whipped cream. I'd come back to Jake's for the Hula Pie alone because it's that good. The hot fudge with the ice cream is irresistible. Highly recommend Jake's for a fancy dinner or special occasion! read more
