First time at Jakeenos and I'd say I'm a fan. We started with some garlic cheese bread. Too many places are using the cheap frozen garlic bread slices but this seemed denser and like "real" bread. No shortage of cheese and the dipping sauce was excellent (is this the same used on the pasta dishes or what you can buy in the jar?). Pizza is VERY thin crust. This is the second time I've been to Jakeeno's and I really have to recommend this family run restaurant a few blocks away from George Floyd Square. The restaurant has been open since 1975, so they have 50 years of experience. They have recently expanded and now have a beer and wine license. The fact that the two women owners are not Italian does not diminish the authenticity of this very southern Italian restaurant. My wife had the make-your-own thin crust pizza. She's from Iowa and I'm from New York, so our pizza tastes are different. However, she feels this was a well made and tasty version of Mid-west pizza, down to the square-cut pieces. I had the lasagna for the second time. It's is absolutely fantastic: 10 out of 10. It arrived to the table bubbling away at a temperature close to the surface of the sun. After it cooled a bit, I savored every bite. It comes with three pieces of very good garlic toast, so at $16.25, I feel this is a great value. If I can get my video of the bubbling lasagna to post, you can almost taste the deliciousness. The physical restaurant has a great ambiance. It's casual, yet would be a great place for a date. It has a private (but small) lot in the back, as well as plenty of on-street free parking. The owners and servers are friendly and competent. For my 600th yelp review (pause for applause), I get to tell you about Jakeeno's! Last night I was in S. Minneapolis with family and we needed - NEEDED - pizza delivered. When I googled for options and saw Jakeeno's among the results I knew everything was going to be okay. There is a lot to like about Jakeeno's! It's totally a longtime neighborhood staple that feels like a cozy, welcoming hangout with great food and (added recently!) a fun bar. They have regular activities like trivia and bingo, and very compelling daily specials such as all-you-can-eat spaghetti on Mondays. I really liked the spaghetti when I did that one, it was a great deal and I wound up bringing home a jar of their sauce. They also have really good cheese bread (provolone is a cool twist) and a really good chocolate layer cake. Lots of other things on their menu look intriguing, and will probably be of very respectable quality. But my favorite is their pizza! Great tasting sauce and the sausage and pepperoni are very flavorful! (Too spicy for my extreme-lightweight mom, so bear that in mind.) There are a lot of menu options; sometimes when I see this much stuff I worry about the quality being spread thin, but so far I've found that nothing is lacking. The service and the atmosphere are exactly like you'd get in a happy small town. It feels like a beloved Heartland Main Street family joint. It is a comfortable place to eat and spend time, and they are open until 1am every night (with a slightly reduced menu after 10pm). Daily happy hour specials too (mostly on drinks). Twin Cities grub - west side of the river - 1 of 2 Here's one where I did not put any effort into selecting where to eat in Minneapolis-St. Paul. My friend, a local, asked me, 'Have you ever heard of Jakeeno's?' Not being from the area, I don't know why I'd know anything about it. It was supposed to be fairly good and I was on board with going here to eat lunch. Upon walking in, there was a board indicating a lunch special. It was a large pizza with one topping. We were able to have that divided as far as the topping went after the server sought permission. It then became a very palatable lunch special. On one part of the pizza, there were pepperoni. On the other part of the pizza, there were mushrooms. If I had to pick between the two, it would be mushrooms. Thus, that was my part. Two soft drinks were also ordered with the pizza. Jakeeno's pizza was excellent and I'm critical when it comes to pizza and pasta. I didn't realize there was such a thing as Chicago thin crust. Not only that, I've never seen a pizza cut up into small squares where I was raised. I was slam dunking (not really) one small square after the other down the hatch. I did get to sample a small square of the pepperoni pizza and it was fine, but my mushroom topped squares really struck a chord with me. The service was also very good, with the woman helping us wanting to see to it, and know, that we liked the food. We did. The prices here are fair and, with lunch specials and happy hours, it makes things doable. The place looks like a popular older eatery with a bar. Jakeeno's has reportedly been here a very long time. With the letters "j" and "k" not being part of the traditional basic 21-character Italian alphabet, with exceptions like more recently imported words such as "weekend" and "relax," I tried to figure out what this name could be. It could have been that it was someone named Gioachino, which would be Joachim in English and Joaquin in Spanish. I could be wrong. Jakeeno is thus easier for Americans (who often shortchange the Italian language). This neighborhood is sort of funky and a place named Matt's, which is the famed dive in South Minneapolis where the "Juicy Lucy" was born, was pointed out to me as we drove toward the St. Paul side of the river. read more

This was my second visit to Jakeeno's in 1 week. Went to a YEE earlier in the week and decided to take my mom since she had good things to say about them and says she hasn't been here since my sister and I were younger [kids]. First thing, they have a smaller lot which I'm super grateful for. Easy parking. There's a lot of street parking as well. We decided to sit in the bar area and the waitress working greeted us and told us she was new. They have daily HH specials so we ordered wings, buy 6 get 6 free. We ordered 12 spicy garlic and 12 house dry rub with a side of hot sauce. There was mix up and they made 6 dry rub and 6 hot wings which was fine. We also ordered: * a large house salad (added onions for .50) *small cheese pizza w/ jalapenos & banana peppers *small margherita pizza *lasagna (w/ upgrade- garlic bread) *lavender lemon drop mocktail *strawberry melon thc canned drink Food was good! We asked for the wings to be fried hard & they were crispy, loved that. The spicy garlic was my favorite of the 3. Pizza was good! The salad was missing the onions which we were still charged for. The croutons on the salad were really good. Loved the music playing & generally chill atmosphere. Will have to come back to checkout some of the other daily specials & events going on. Loved Jakeeno's and I was actually craving for their Reuben pizza and then I got an email from them saying that their featured pizza hot spicy honey is going away on March 6th and so I had come try it so my husband and I made a late lunch date. It was unexpectedly good and very tasty. Would highly recommend it before it's gone. Since we came doing HH, we decided to also order spaghetti and chicken wings to share. Service was prompt and it was less busy in the dining room compare to the bright area of the bar with lots of windows and the sun shining through. Would highly recommend this place. read more

I've been getting pizza from Jakeeno's for nearly 30 years and have always had positive experiences, which is why this situation was so disappointing. I ordered a pizza for pickup and didn't eat it until a couple of hours later. When I went back for another slice, I realized the bottom and parts of the top were burned. I called the restaurant to ask what could be done. The first employee told me to bring in my receipt and then abruptly hung up. I called back and spoke with another employee who said that since I was working, I could bring the pizza and receipt back the next day. I taped the box shut and left a note for my roommate explaining the situation. Unfortunately, not realizing what it was for, additional slices were eaten later that evening. When I returned the next day, the restaurant was open for business but I was stopped at the door and told they were having a private party. After explaining the situation and asking about reordering the pizza, I spoke with the owner/manager, who appeared visibly annoyed and said, "We have a private party now, so I'll refund you later," followed by, "You can't expect to return a pizza half eaten." The tone was rude and accusatory, as though I were trying to take advantage of the situation. I understand restaurant policies and wasn't demanding a refund. What I did expect was basic courtesy, especially as a long-time customer. The contrast between the warm, respectful treatment shown to guests attending the private party and the dismissive way I was spoken to was striking. The manager loudly proclaimed that I would be refunded. While I strongly disagree with how I was treated, I actually agree that a refund is not necessary--please keep it. The issue wasn't the pizza; it was the assumption and the lack of professionalism. After decades of loyalty, this experience was extremely disappointing, and I won't be returning. Talk about a true neighborhood gem. We stumbled across this super cute, cozy Pizza and Pasta spot in South Minneapolis. This sister run spot has been around for 49 years! Always family owned and operated. It was a Monday evening and they run an all you can eat spaghetti deal for $10. Yeah. $10!!! What a steal. On top of that pints are $4 on Mondays. This spaghetti was phenomenal. I was truly blown away by the perfect cook on the noodles and the delicious, meaty red sauce. It brought all the feels and childhood memories from eating spaghetti growing up. Except my mom's was never this good (don't tell her). Service was also awesome. Our server was fast and friendly and the owner even came over to say hello and ask if everything was good. I am super excited to come back for pizza. We came here on a Thursday, and took advantage of their "date night special" which included a half Antipasto salad order (enough for 2), choice of a 13 inch medium pizza (enough to bring leftovers home) or two servings of pasta, a bottle of wine (choice of Merlot or Sauvignon Blanc), and a dessert (choice of brownie or salted caramel cheesecake) for $60. In the current marketplace, I think this is a great deal! The pizza and salad were perfect; it included cheese, pepperoni, tomato, onion, bell pepper, olives, and mushrooms. The pizza is my favorite type of pizza: thin crust, with toppings to the edge, and square cut. We opted for the house special pizza which was sausage, pepperoni, and mushroom. I like the sauce a lot, and I notice they sell the sauce if you want to take it home for an at home meal. We added an order of the garlic cheese toast and chocolate mocha layer cake, because each of those options are nearly required here (trust me, they are that good)! The garlic cheese bread is made with provolone cheese and includes a zesty dipping sauce. The chocolate cake is surprisingly light and not too sweet, with a hint of coffee. I love that chocolate cake, because when someone mentions chocolate cake to me, I imagine something dense and this cake is decidedly not so; it has a layer of whipped cream between each layer of cake and is a great ending to an otherwise heavy-ish meal. We were able to score street parking in the front of the restaurant, although they do have a very small parking lot; I'd recommend snagging street side parking when you get near the location if you see an opening. The establishment is broken into two halves: one side is a restaurant with tables and chairs, and the other half is a bar with many high top tables. I noticed that the bar area has happy hour specials I'd like to check out on a future visit, as well as fun things like trivia, karaoke, and a meat raffle. There are other daily specials I plan to take advantage of on a future visit, too, such as all you can eat spaghetti (Monday), bottomless mimosas (weekend), and a large pizza with wings + 50% off bottle of wine (Sunday). We came here late afternoon, and the server wasn't very attentive; I'm going to give her a pass on this because it wasn't peak dining time and it looked like she was serving both the bar and restaurant area. Overall, this was a good dining experience and I'll be sure to add this to my rotation of pizza/pasta restaurants and/or happy hour specials. read more

It took me a while to write this review because I don't like giving bad reviews. But, I knew that I would eventually write one, so here I am.....I went to this restaurant some weeks ago because it was close by and I was craving spaghetti and meatballs. Upon ordering, I was told that a traditional spaghetti and meatball dinner was not on the menu but that I could order spaghetti and sauce with the meatballs on the side. So, I agreed. I ordered spaghetti with three meatballs but I wasn't told how big the meatballs were. Turns out this info was super important because telling me how big the meatballs were would have allowed me to make a better decision on how many I would have ordered. And believe me, it wouldn't have been three! I finally got my order after about 25 minutes in a restaurant that was only serving a couple. I should have checked my order while I was there but I trusted these people; big mistake! When I got back to my office I was so disappointed. I received a tin of spaghetti with three giant meatballs inside. If the meatballs are a separate order on the menu then why weren't they in separate tin? I mean, fries at McDonald's always come in a separate bag from the burger, right? Anyway, the tin was so full of meatballs that they left little space for the pasta. So, I ended up paying $23 bucks (plus a generous tip) for 3 giant meatballs and a little bit of pasta. I received no bread, which should be a standard, and no utensils or napkins. I got no fork, knife or napkins! Luckily, I found a spoon and a few napkins in the break room and tried to eat this spaghetti and meatballs meal with a spoon. But, I was so angry and disgusted that I just put this meal in the break room fridge and ate nothing until I got home. The meatballs were not good. Just giant balls of meat that were clearly of the frozen variety. Meatballs from a restaurant should always be home made. The pasta and sauce were unremarkable as well. So, in the end, I basically waited a super long time for giant meatballs that clearly weren't homemade and a handful of pasta that I couldn't eat because it's hard to eat pasta with a spoon. Needless to say, but I will say it anyway, this will be my last visit. read more

Take your best friend for happy hour. Mine's a local rapper. He was pretty faded at the table, but he said something interesting. "A pirate is a bandit, but a bandit is not a pirate." We both got personal pizzas, perfect pepperoni ones. Did you know that a bandit was named after the bandanna not the other way around? The fish sandwich at this place is the best on the south side. I'll put it up against that one by the waterfall over there in the park. I waited in line half an hour for one of those last summer. Carbones is never did me wrong. Sometimes the trivia's too loud, but you can't hate on people for having a good time. I've got genuine love for this restaurant. The staff have seen me through multiple relationships. Did you ever notice that every time you break up you think you lost the greatest person you ever had until you meet the next person and then you think "how could I ever meet someone this awesome?" That happens to me every time. And every time when I'm feeling so low, and I can't get my head out of the ground, I come here and I get a Reuben. Some places make them too fancy. Comfort food isn't supposed to be fancy. Comfort food is supposed to be authentic. All we really crave is authenticity in this world of plastic and avatars. Such a great local treasure. I'm a particular fan of their thin crust pizza. I haven't gone wrong with any of their pasta either. This place sits on the corner of the street which has parking on street but also has a reserved parking lot for customers. As of right now Jakeeno's is NOT OPEN FOR DINE IN 02/15/2023, but please do reach out to them to know if and when they will be. I ordered a lasagna, and custom pizza which included mushrooms, spinach, banana peppers, and pepperoni. The pick up time was quick and easy. On top of my order on Wednesday's Jakeeno's gives you a FREE CHEESE PIZZA! The lasagna was amazing with tons of layers of cheese and came with a side of bread as well, it tasted great and overall was super happy with it. My custom pizza was amazing along with the cheese pizza and overall it tasted so good, the pizza crust is thin and crunchy and the toppings are tasty, the cheese is super nice and stringy and it was one of the best pizza experiences I've had. Just NOT the Jakeeno's we have loved for years :( My husband's family have been regulars for over 30 years. Something changed after Covid. It used to be the friendliest place in town...not so any more! We have been back many times, but continue to leave disappointed. Last night we ordered a pizza for delivery and it never arrived, when we called, we were told two different delivery guys had shown up without the necessary "hot bags" for delivery and so our pizza was still sitting there. We were pretty hungry, so I volunteered my husband to go pick it up but asked that they make us a new hot pizza. When he got there it was the original pizza that was now over an hour out of the oven. My husband said he did not want that cold pizza and just asked for a refund. He was told "they didn't know how to do that". Long story short, it took two days but we did get our money back, but most importantly, no apology. We will miss our favorite old spot :( read more
