One of the best hardware stores on the planet! Not to mention the SF Bay Area ... A classic "old school" hardware store, which is the best complement I can give. It is *enormous* - occupying approximately one whole Zip code by itself ... It is the cultural polar opposite of "Corporate Hardware" like Home Depot! Yet I am more likely to find what I need at Jackson's, and I am *much* more likely to be helped by staff who know what they are talking about and who know their store and their products, and are thus very capable of helping me solve my problem. I always have a great customer experience at Jackson's. I also really appreciate the fact that it is 100% employee owned, and it shows in their attitude towards customers: they *care* about you as a customer, and they go that extra mile to make sure you leave with what you came for. Jackson's hardware ordered only one vanity faucet for our two sink vanity. Two weeks later they realized their mistake, cancelled the first order then placed another order for two. Five weeks later we were told the faucets were in Atlanta and wouldn't be here for several more weeks. Frustrated we cancelled the order and ordered from another supplier - they delivered the next day. After placing the new order I was told Jackson's made another mistake, the faucets were in Oakland and could be delivered in five days. Two problems with that. 1) we were on vacation that week 2) the contractor wanted them today, tomorrow at the latest. So that still did not work. This was Jackson's error (multiple) but they still felt no remorse in charging us over $200 for a restocking fee. When we argued that it was Jackson errors which lead to this long lead time and missed due dates, we were told to take it and the manager walked away from us. They have your money and aren't afraid to keep it for themselves. A sad way to operate. read more

Jackson's sold me the wrong brackets. I came back to get the correct ones but they would not take back the original purchase because I did not have a receipt. I came back two weeks later with the receipt and they still would not refund me. They made the mistake originally by selling me the wrong part. They are also expensive. This place is huge. Endless isles with a little bit of everything from clothing to useful keychains to professional arborist climbing gear. Make your list and check it out. Having read the negative reviews regarding service, I wasn't personally in need of help. I was asked if I needed anything a few times do I don't have any complaints. It sounds like there would be benefit for staff to be trained like the staff at Trader Joe's, Ace Hardware, Oliver's grocery, and dare I say it--Walmart. Each has obviously trained their floor people to be attentive and helpful to customer questions with knowledgeable, respectful, and positive energy. Especially if you have long tome customers willing to go out of their way to support a local, employee owned business. In fact, next time I visit, if I have any issues with any of the staff, I will know to ask for Steve Hossfeld, the Business Manager who has been responding to Yelp reviews. read more

I had to replace a porchlight with dauntingly specific criteria. A helpful employee, Chris T (I just realized that spells 'Christ"), couldn't find the exact bulb but was so knowledgeable in the subject of lighting that he was able to give me several working options. This isn't the first time I've received this level of attention at Jackson's. It's refreshing to find a business that doesn't settle for C- service and actually gives a damn about excelling. Mostly good, but with some attitude... My last number of trips to Jackson's reaffirmed my faith in them. I had plumbing trouble and plumbing/rental staff walked me through the process of cutting my iron line and replacing with plastic one. Had I called the plumber, I would have paid hundreds of dollars and not received any better product. HOWEVER - my gripe concerns a previous visit with serious staff attitude in the sink fixtures area. When we informed a staff that we wanted to purchase one of their sale faucets, the staff looked us from head to toe, walked over to calculate the 30% discount (duh - I can figure than out myself), told us and asked if we would still like to buy it. Unstated comments: you look grungy - are you sure you can afford this? I've found this attitude lots since moving to Marin. Just because we work on our house and sometimes dress like it doesn't mean we can't afford your oh-so-precious faucets! Give me an effin break! read more

For certain things Jackson's is best, like custom hardware. But most days when I stop by I end up disappointed, and today was one of those days. I needed a new nail gun. The guy who helped me didn't know anything, and he asked another employee, who casually pointed us down one aisle - the place wasn't busy at all, and he made no effort to actually help. Anyway, I finally spotted a gun that would work and there was no price posted. What followed was a lengthy exchange between the two employees and multiple checks on the computer. Still no price after about ten minutes. Finally the more senior employee said, "I think it's $399," not that he actually found the listing. I had spent quite a bit of time on this and another issue in the tool department, both to no avail. When I got back to my truck, I decided to check Amazon on my phone and found EXACTLY what I needed within 45 seconds for $198 - yes, half the price Jackson's quoted, free delivery guaranteed for tomorrow. So I pushed the "Order Now" button. Done, and I'm sure it will be just fine. If local shops want our business - proof that I try was the nearly half hour I wasted at Jackson's this afternoon - they simply must to do better. And they have to at least pretend they give a damn. read more

Worst customer service ever. I bought a Stihl chainsaw for about $500. It was making weird noises so I brought it back. They checked it out and said it looks fine. Next time I went to use it, I started it up, set it on the ground to warm up and as I was putting on my safety chaps it started screeching and smoking. I immediately picked it up and shut it off. Went back to Jackson's and they said, "you ran it with the chain brake on." I explained what happened but it fell on deaf ears. Weeks later I finally get to talk to a manager who says he'll talk to Stihl on my behalf and get back to me. That was over 3 weeks ago and I haven't heard back. I so rarely give reviews of anything less than five stars. This business is very hard to review. I'll break it down into pros and cons. Pros: -many of the employees are quite knowledgeable. The ones who are not knowledgeable sometimes make up for it with kindness and willingness to help. Emphasis on "sometimes", which will be in the cons. - they have a vast array of screws, router bits, hand and power tools as well as fixtures and finish hardware such as Sinks, faucets, drawer pulls, door knobs, etc. it's a great place to shop different styles and brands. Now the cons: -first and foremost, there are a handful of employees (which, Jackson's being employee owned, are technically owners) That behave in a childishly angry and dismissive manner. You ask them a question and they treat you like you are and absolute pest, ruining their day by not shopping with your mouth closed. They will make you feel so stupid for asking a simple question, in the way only a bitter 62 year old man that never did what he wanted to do in his life can make you feel. I assume they are probably ex-contractors that couldn't keep up with the work in the field after a back injury, and they take their miserable existence out on everyone who enters their store. I know this sounds sounds harsh, but trust me, I'm underplaying it. 2 or 3 of these guys truly should not be interacting with customers even if it meant directing them out of a building during a structure fire. Because of this I only go there in a pinch. I was there today and an older slender man with grey hair and glasses was on a computer, I approached him and as politely as humanly possible, knowing he was one of the jerks, said, "excuse me sir, can I ask you a very quick question" with a tone that said, "I know you're doing something, but you're closing in 10 minutes and I'm trying to get out of your hair" and with as much vitriol as the old man could muster, he said "uhhhh... NO... I'm busy" just quit dude. Why are you here if you hate people so much? - number two is price. Jackson's is outrageously overpriced. I only go there if they have a product I need same day, and can't get at any other hardware store within a ten hour drive. Compare any one of their products to online prices and you'll find it's marked about between 150-300%. read more

I give them 4 stars for breadth of product offerings and a -5 for service. I keep hoping they will change but it's the same snarky, belittling attitude each time I come in. The reason I choose to go to Jackson's over a Home Depot is because I want to go somewhere with trained salespeople that can take the time to help me and offer expertise. However, each time I come in with questions - whether looking for plumbing, hardware, gardening etc - I'm met with a condescending nonchalance (more than once by the same sales person). I really really want to like this place - as I said the product offering is varied and great. But the service is a nightmare. I have been to Jackson's Hardware many times over the years. The last bunch of times, the customer service has been pretty bad...bad enough that I felt motivated to actually write a review. I consistently find the staff somewhat unfriendly and seemingly unmotivated to offer help, even when you are clearly searching for things around the store. Customer service is often slow and lacking a genuine sense that they truly take customer care seriously - it often appears that they feel put out when you ask for assistance. In addition, I find the prices for many things at Jackson's very high - considerably higher than other hardware or big box stores. In summary, I want to like this place and appreciate that it's "family owned - pro employee", but recent experiences have let me down and led me away. read more

An excellent store with a voluminous selection of products which are not just "homeowner" grade crap precision engineered to fall apart in a year to get you back in the store to buy a new one. While they've got plenty of cheap stuff for the casual or one-time user, they've also got Fein, Festool, Stihl and the higher-end Makita goods as well. If they also stocked Metabo and Mafell I'd probably never shop anywhere else. I can't say the staff were especially helpful, but it's not like I want anyone following me around looking over my shoulder, either. When I needed help I marched over to a counter, stated my purpose, and was accommodated quickly. I stopped by today to buy a new lock for my residence and Mark helped me out. Within 10 minutes, he gave me an excellent education on all the available locks and which one may suit me the best. I asked for advice regarding a specific lock that a locksmith and told me about and Mark took the time to reseach the product and gave me phone numbers and names of two locksmiths that he would recommend that I get additional quotes from. The information/education that he gave to me was so informative and useful that I felt guilty for not giving him a commission for his services. This is the 4th time I have come here.....and every time I do, I am always impressed with the knowledge and expertise of all the staff! How much is your time worth? I have a problem, especially with Home Depot, trying to get help, let alone information. It takes forever, and often I end up with nothing, which pisses me off! Always, with Jackson's Hardware, I can call, or, when I go there, it's rare that I will not get immediate help, information and advice, pertaining to a full line of superior quality merchandise. With rare exception, I can always depend on knowledgable, patient and courteous service. Although a large labyrinth, this is a store with personal treatment, not a chain. So this place is employee owned? Really? WOW! Well then the employee who "helped" my husband & I doesn't think customer service is important. It was our first time in this well stocked, large store and when approached by an employee owner he continued to point out "what you are looking for is not HERE, it's over THERE" however "over THERE" was very nondescript. It was turning into a game of warm, warmer, hot, cold.....very childish and not the way I would help a customer. We find it very important to support local business first, however, with that being said, if it weren't for their selection we would not return. Yesterday I was on hold at Jackson's while the tool person went to see what stock they had on a tool I was look for. A mini camera to look behind walls. I started flipping through reviews and saw more than a few negative reviews. Some folks be so entitled that if you don't drop what your doing to help them your wacked. I've been dealing with Jackon's as mostly a homeowner for more than 16 years, while I am a contractor but in the City. i have NEVER had poor service at Jackson's! Did I have to wait at times, yea they do get busy folks. A couple of times i have seen employees be knda rude, I'd kinda call it surley to people but you should have heard what that person said first! Great place. Large, employee owned, and stocked with a lot of stuff. That being said, they are an independent shop and as such sometimes don't carry everything you'll need for a job. This is THE hardware store in Marin. It's huge, well-stocked, and the staff know their stuff. There is no lumber, but you'll find everything else: electrical fittings, conduit and plumbing fittings, tools, more tools, paint, cabinet hardware, fasteners of all kinds, pocket knives, flashlights, bulbs, switches, etc. etc. You can even find clothes, Carhartt and Wrangler jeans, hats, steel-toed boots. It's so large I still get lost inside. As others observe, the staff really know their products, and construction needs. They are good about refunds, as long as you have the receipt. There is a finish plumbing section, with Grohe and other high-end faucets, sinks, toilets, etc. However, you should also check more specialized stores for plumbing fixtures, where the selection may be larger and prices could be a bit lower. But if you need a tool, or a fastener, or cabinet hardware, this is the place to go. read more

Soooooo much better than Home Depot!! First of all, everyone I talked to was incredibly helpful and really took the time to help me figure out what I needed for my furniture refinishing project. Secondly, they have many more environmentally friendly products than Home Depot. It's a much more human scale kind of place, a better experience than any big box store. I agree with Raider - they're good at taking you and your project into account, making sure you don't buy anything you won't need, helping you find alternatives, and talking you through your options when it comes to greener products. read more
