I have been coming to Jack's for over ten years now. From clothes to watches to sunglasses to surf gear, Jack's has always been my go-to surfshop. I have always thought the staff there were casual, friendly locals who really care about their customers. But after visiting a few days ago and receiving an absolutely horrid experience with their rentals, I seriously doubt I will be returning to what used to be one of my favorite shops. I had some friends from out of town visiting who wanted to surf, so of course I bring them to Jack's to get an easy, affordable soft-top board as a rental. For $30 a day, Jack's makes it so easy to essentially sign the waiver, grab a board, and go. The wavestorm we grabbed was a little torn and obviously aged, I know Jack's has been using these guys for years. We took it to 204's, a local beach break, to have fun on some small 2-3ft swell. The board snapped on the second wave. Didn't hit the bottom, didn't hit a rock, the wooden support within the board just gave out. We were all laughing, the ocean couldn't be more calm and board couldn't even handle that. But I knew it was a wavestorm, they're known for being less-than-top quality. That's why Costco (their original distributor) replaces them for free when you turn in the pieces. We headed back to Jack's to explain the situation and ensure we could get another board. I spoke directly with the manager, and was absolutely shocked at his response. He said we would have to pay $200 for the replacement fee. $200. For a $100 board. A $100 wavestorm that broke due to no error of our own, but because it was so old and weathered that it could not withstand a two foot wave. The manager barked that it was our fault and we are liable because we signed the waiver, and failed to take responsibility for selling us such inexcusable, sub-par equipment. In fact when I said that he rudely replied "I didn't sell you anything. You RENTED one of our boards, you signed a waiver assuming responsibility, and picked the board yourself. We aren't going to replace it, so you have to". Still dumbfounded a Jack's Manager, after respecting their employees so much for so long, would treat us like this, I explained that Costco literally replace these boards for free. Two things would happen next: Either they could take responsibility for their faulty equipment they rented to us and replace the board on their own time free of charge, or we, the customer, could go to Costco ourselves, turn in the Wavestorm parts ourselves and get a free replacement board, and give them this new, improved product and then write a bad review. One of the snarky girls behind the counter then replied "Write a review then". Could not believe a Jack's employee would talk to a customer like that. So here is said review. Incredibly disappointed in you, Jack's. read more
