Old, and cool looking diner, affordable food. For some reason the orange juice was really good. Waffles, French toast weren't bad. Only thing that was annoying is when I asked the waitress if the blueberries were fresh and she said yeah. It turned out to be dehydrated, wish they didn't charge me $2 for dehydrated blueberries. read more

I always thought this place was closed until I saw a friend posting about it. Very small cozy spot. You know this is a great spot when there's nothing but regulars coming through the door! The ladies are extremely sweet and attentive. I took my stuff to go and they are very efficient and it's obvious that the kitchen is very clean as you can see it if you sit at the "bar". This is my favorite diner in Albany, from the atmosphere, the decor, to the menu. A gorgeous little vintage diner like this can easily fall into the terrible "1950s kitsch" trap--pictures of 50s stars, 50s pop music blaring, and even poodle skirts at times. Instead, the interior and exterior have been in kept in great shape but it hasn't turned into a theme park. The menu is expansive and very reasonably priced with good portions, and the coffee is decent for a place like this. They have many vegetarian options, so it's a good place to go if you're with a crowd. The waitresses are friendly and effecient, I don't think I've ever waited for more than a minute for an offer to refill my coffee or water. Even in small places like this, that can be a rarity. Overall, it's a great little spot to grab a bite to eat that hasn't turned into a cliche or super trendy, expensive place like some other diners do. A real Albany gem. read more

The recently restored Jack's Diner is cleaner and prettier than before, but my wife and I both found our breakfasts to be unremarkable (our waitress was pretty cool though). To begin with, the corned beef hash comes out of a can. Also, the wheat, rye and white breads are all of that bland, generic "Sysco" quality. Additionally, I was nearly done with my $6.99 Farmer's Omelet (coffee not included) before I remembered that one of the ingredients was supposed to be sausage, causing me to look closely to make sure they hadn't forgotten to include it. They hadn't. There just wasn't enough of it there, nor was it flavorful enough, to make an impression. My wife felt about the same regarding her $5.99 Ham Omelet. Lunch prices looked reasonable, however, and they have a couple of Mexican options, which I can never seem to resist trying at least once, so perhaps we'll go back and give Jack's another try some afternoon. There are far better breakfast options in the area, however (some cheaper, some better, some both), so we won't be back in the A.M. (and I should note that we used to go to Jack's every Sunday morning without fail) read more

Apparently everyone who wrote a review for this place is either crazy or was paid off by Jack's. I've been to this place twice, the second because I couldn't really believe the breakfast was as bad as I thought it was the first time. It was even worse than I remembered the second time. The eggs were burned the potatoes tasteless, and the coffee was quite possibly the worst coffee I've ever had. Open up a can of potatoes and microwave them with eggs, it would be 100% improved over the garbage this place serves. The only reason I'm writing this review is because two years removed from this experience I figured this had to be maybe 2 stars on yelp (which it doesn't even deserve) and it's almost 5! Decided to try jacks when are first choice had over an hour waiting list, so glad we did. We sat at the bar area and it was great, made some friends and had a great breakfast. Very simply, their food is very good. I've only sampled their breakfast fare, but it's all been very tasty. I'm a fan of their egg sandwiches myself, but their omelets are also fantastic. I've never had to wait for a seat -- maybe I just have never been during a busy time -- but I appreciate that aspect. The prices are also reasonable. I do wish they had Coke instead of Pepsi, but that's just because I am a freak. read more

This super greasy diner is the best place to go for a hangover breakfast. everything is dripping with grease and if you hit it up on a weekday, you can watch the locals come in and sit together, bitching about the weather and local politics. blueberry pancakes here are awesome, and a short stack will fill you up. I made the mistake of ordering 2 blueberry pancakes, 2 eggs over easy, sausage, hash browns, and toast. the eggs were perfect, the toast was nicely buttered, the hash browns were tender and there was more sausage than a gay bar. friendly waitress running the whole place. at least at 9am on a Tuesday after Christmas. three stars overall quality, 5 stars for a greasy spoon diner. read more

The food at this diner was average diner food. Big portions and all your standard American breakfast options. The place was clearly filled with locals and it looks like this place has been here for a while, so for those who value that sort of thing, take note! For breakfast, I ordered a small chocolate milk, which upon arrival was followed by a "is this chocolaty enough for you," very cute :) My friend ordered the Challah french toast, which did not look like traditional Challah, more like Texas toast, but apparently was sweeter than normal Texas toast and very tasty. read more

i am torn on the whole giving a diner 5 stars but i can truly think of no reason why i should not give it 5. it satisfies all of my requirements for a good diner. we had gone to another local brunch place that is quite popular and a good fall-back except that the wait is really out of control. kenz suggested Jacks and as i had never been i gave in. i was however quite skeptical (obviously not having read any of the reviews on yelp...) parking seemed like it could be an issue but it wasn't. we walked in to a very bright and clean room w/ a lot of lovely counter space and a couple of open booths. we were greeted right away and told to choose where we wished to sit. the waitress came right over and got us water and coffee within like 60 seconds of our ordering (and unlike so many other places she actually remembered the water the first time!! how many times have you asked and had to sit parched till you could snag an eye to beg again only to be given the 'look' of a irritating bothersome needy customer?) we were busy chatting so she had to come back 3 times but she was gracious each time and brought the coffee pot with her (extra points for that) our food came out very quickly, just as we had ordered (we didn't order quick food. i had ordered some special adjustments to my eggs benedict). i am very picky of my hollandaise. this was divine! it was the perfect creamy consistency. it was also a perfect marriage of butter and egg yolk and lemon. creamy and slightly tart. seriously some of the best basic hollandaise i have had. (great. i just made myself drool.) the check was $23 for 3 people. very reasonable. we also stayed and chatted after paying and didn't feel like we were being rushed out. she even asked if we needed more water or coffee. next weekend that i am in the mood for brunch i know where i will be coming. Honestly, it was the best egg white omelet I've ever had. It wasn't dry or sopping wet, just perfect. The bacon was extra crispy, toast fine right and the potatoes. Man, they were great. Perfectly seasoned with unknown spices and cooked till, they were creamy, not dry. The place is totally retro and vintage, making you feel like you're back in old Albany. Add a star for an old school rail-car style diner that includes a mix of local college students and local residents. As far as the food: home fries were crispy (as requested) and good but the spinach, mushroom (jarred shrooms), feta omelette was so salty it was almost inedible and was left unfinished. In addition, the request was for a yellow omelette that isn't browned yet it came out brown. Prices are good. Worth a visit. May try it again should I be in the area. read more

This is the real deal Holyfield!!! This place has been in business since 1949 and there's a good reason why. Family of four... full breakfast for 30 bucks. This place is the best!!! I don't need to elaborate, because it's the best, but I will. Have you ever gone to a diner and the food is bland, pre-made. Like the "homefries" are warmed up frozen potatoes and the pancakes are obviously from a box mix or worse, frozen and heated up? This isn't the place to go if you want that kind of diner food. They use fresh ingredients, real eggs, real bacon and the homefries are awesome. My favorite is their Belgium waffles. Great! It's 3 am and now I want Jack's waffles. So anyways, that was just the breakfast foods. Honestly, I've never had anything I didn't like there. Correction, love!! The foods great and it's a small diner that is an Albany landmark. If you live in Albany and you've never eaten there, you need to wake up at 8 am and get your butt there. Unless you want lunch then show up a little later....or dinner...you get the idea. It's the best diner in the capital district with Halfmoon Diner a close second and then the one at the Latham circle. In conclusion, Jack's is the best diner ever. read more

Hidden gem! More food than we could finish. Chicken and waffles were delicious. Monte Cristo sandwich with its unique dipping sauce will make you wanting it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
