Fantastic fried chicken, better than KFC. Always a treat for my family to eat here. Gotta have a bowl of knoephla or borscht when you order. A Dickinson mainstay that I hope is here to stay. Always a blast to enjoy small talk with Jack when you check out. I love their ice in the soft drinks, it's that small-cube "hospital" ice that turns your drink super cold in a hurry. The atmosphere is cozy, and like others suggested, grandma's house kinda cozy. Who doesn't like going to grandma's house? They need more chickens in the restaurant decor! Hahaha I still don't know why they replaced their iconic old sign "BUCKETS OF CHICKEN" with that hideous new one. My grandfather used to take me here as a child on a daily basis and I always ordered the Borscht of Knoefla soup. Throughout the years I have eaten here and the soups here are still among some of the best I have ever eaten, to the point where we had Jack's Borscht soup catered at our wedding in Colorado. I highly recommend! Of course if you are looking for a fancy or even mediocre ambiance then well, you should probably just drive right on through Dickinson. This place is all about the food and not about the building, and well if you lived in ND you'd probably complain about everything too... We were traveling through Dickinson and knew nothing about this restaurant when we stopped to eat at Jack's. We were more than pleasantly surprised at the exceptional quality of food! The homemade soups were awesome! This meal stood out as one of the best ones from our vacation. Highly recommend and will definitely return when back in Dickinson! The fried chicken was very good! Juicy, crunchy, and salty! As a southern girl transplanted here I was happy with the fried chicken for sure. The reason I didn't give 5 stars is the mashed potatoes were scarily bland. I am pretty sure they were real mashed potatoes but they were almost totally unseasoned and lacked flavor. We also had the cole slaw which, while swimming in dressing, wasn't too shabby. Next time we order from here we will branch out and try different things. Perhaps the famous borscht will make for a stellar future review. read more

Ghastly! A vaguely ominous chicken-obsessed place where the waitress complained openly and bitterly about her stingy boss and screwed up each of our four meals despite writing it all down and then made a $5 error on our $37 dollar bill. Very low quality food (i.e., instant mashed potatoes, "salad" consisting only of iceberg lettuce, etc.). The dining room is enhanced by a bathroom that opens directly into the room just past the "charming" plywood and 2 x 4 windbreak that hides the front door. Make sure you lock that bathroom door before you do your business. read more

The best place in town!! I think I would have gone crazy if I hadn't found this place. Just moved to ND and this little restaurant makes me feel like I brought all the comforts of home with me. Whether you want the best chicken you have ever tasted, or the most juicy burgers around or even looking for some delicious soup you need to stop into this place and get your home cooking fix. The chicken is the most moist and juicy chicken I've ever eaten, the fries are crispy and flavorful and I didn't know you could make toast taste amazing but apparently this place has that special skill of making all their food taste amazing. This place has great food their chicken was awesome, but the service was no bueno ! The waitress took 45 min to refill my cup forgetting 3x that I had asked her ... This is an old family favorite and it's still good. The local favorite soups & fried chicken are worth the stop. However, I was pretty turned off by the exterior of the restaurant. It may sound trival but the sign looks 1970's. The back of the restaurant is exposed to the parking lot and let's just say...its not a good first impression. The cigarette machine at the front door has sentimental value for the locals but to everyone else its a bad first & last impression. We stopped in 7/26/2018 shortly after noon. As we entered someone said hello, sit anywhere you want. After about 5 minutes, two other tables near us had people sit down at them. A waitress came to each table and took their orders. My wife said that she also looked at our table. We waited another 5 minutes and the waitress came back to one of the tables and started to visit. At that point we got up to leave. The waitress stopped visiting and asked if we needed anything. I told her that we were not being served and were leaving. This brought no reply. At the register there was a man talking on a cell phone. He asked if he could help us. I told him about sitting down and getting no service so we were leaving. I received no reply from him. He went back to his call and I left. read more
