Was out tooling around looking over the lay of the land and seeing what was around. Was beginning to feel a bit peckish, so I began to contemplate a choice of eating establishment. Driving up 22 I passes a place and the sign caught my eye. UPIN NO SPICE SPICE TI. Partially faded and almost hidden, the open sign in the widow was on so I whipped the old jeep around and pulled in. First off let me say that if you are looking for an elegant sit down restaurant and haute cuisine, you will be disappointed in Upin. Her place is dominated by the kitchen and while they have two tables, the place is a take out place and if you eat there you are still getting your food in take out containers. If though, you are the type of person that likes really good Ti food. You are in luck! The Pad Ti is awesome and you get enough for at least two meals . The egg rolls are hand made, not frozen. You know what the best part is? The owner, and cook Upin talks to you while she cook your meal! I swear it's like eating at your old Tiland aunts house who loves you. I don't have an aunt from Tiland, but after meeting Upin I kind of feel like I've missed out on something special, and wish that I did. read more

Upin was a quick stop for food as my family passed through Dickenson. The restaurant is small and cramped. It doesn't lend itself to dining in, as we discovered when we decided we wanted to eat before we headed back on the road. There were seats lined around a counter-height bar and one table with two chairs. It was noted that Upin is better known as a takeout restaurant as our group of six sat separated. The kitchen is in plain view. This was nice though, because it was demonstrated that orders are prepared fresh as they are placed. The girl who took our order behind the counter was very attentive and sweet. Kudos to her for great customer service. However, the food here was meh. The chicken fried rice got a thumbs up from my son. On the other hand, the Thai chicken salad was far different than the ones I've had at other Thai restaurants. I understand that each has their own rendition but this was far off. When you think of salad, you think a medley of vegetables consisting mainly of chilled greens. When we were brought our food, I thought it wasn't what we had ordered. The girl confirmed it was indeed Thai salad. What we were given was a stir fried entree with chicken, bell peppers, onions and an acidic sauce served with two scoops of rice. The "salad" had interesting variances of temperature with both warm and cold pockets. The pad thai was more disappointing. You typically can expect a degree of consistency when ordering this from Thai restaurants. Upin's lacked the full-embodied flavor denoting what I've become familiar as pad thai. Each of us from our group had a taste and agreed. While there were generous portions of chicken, the entree was bland and greasy. The remainder of the large serving went untouched until I brought it home and revitalized it myself with the seasonings it was missing. Upin is an "okay" restaurant. The menus could use some work to describe the renditions of each entree. I wouldn't recommend Upin to those who've had and love Thai cuisine. Although they don't technically have vegetarian curries on the menu, and they don't have tofu, they were able to make some wonderful vegetarian curries for us. We had the massaman curry. The sauce was nice and mild, and really complimented the potatoes and carrots. We also ordered the panang curry, and we love the sauce! The servings were extremely large. Very good Masaman Curry this evening. Pleasantly steamed rice on the side. The curry was perfectly spiced and the consistency was just right. It was really enough for two or three people easily, but I was a party of one, for take-out. The ambiance is not conducive to eating in or for date nights, although I'm not sure what those are any more, which is why only 4 stars and not five. This place came highly recommended from a friend in Minneapolis. We stopped there when passing through last year and I was not very impressed at all. There are only a couple tables available for eating so it's really a take-out place. We had some classic Thai dishes and none were particularly good. The prices are not cheap and it adds up really quick when ordering more than one or two things. The place seems kind of dirty too...I found myself looking around to perhaps see something I did not want to see. I'm sure it's plenty clean but it just seemed a little grimy. I was passing through again last week and gave it another try. I ordered pork fried rice and pork egg rolls. Over $16! I will say the eggrolls were very good but at over $6 for three small eggrolls the value is not good even though they taste good. The fried rice, on the other hand, was absolutely horrible. I did not eat it because it was brutal. I would not have eaten it if it was free. It was sticky and flavorless and certainly did not approach any expectations of what fried rice ought to be. A total fail. I cannot recommend Upin Thai after my experience over two visits. And if you go please stay away from the fried rice. It'll make you want to never eat fried rice again. read more

Friendly service and good Thai in ND? Yes, upin thai has good food and the service to match. Prices were reasonable at 9-12$ per dish. The flavors were more mellow but is toned down for local tastes and they give you small cups of spice to augment. The service was friendly and courteous. Everything here is amazing. Easily the best take out in town, which is tragic because Upin Thai is barely recognizable as a business from the outside. If you can get past the deteriorating decor, this place is for you. Most dishes can be ordered "spicy or no-spicy" on a scale of 1-10. I usually go for an 8. Yes it is small, yes there is really no place to eat inside. But it is authentic, incredibly tasty and the staff and owner are very personable, humble and very good at their art. I wouldn't change anything about Upin Thai- please support the local non-chain businesses like this in Dickinson. We need more of these! Fantastic food and service. Well, if you're dining in and like salt. You'll find enough of the sodium in both the food and the staff. We might've come on a bad day, but the customer service could use some warming up. The peanuts tasted like the dry roasted salted kind since they were not the soft peanutty flavor morsels found in other massaman curry dishes. Don't be deceived by the restaurant's humble appearance, the food is tasty and there is plenty of it. The location is very small; there is a counter type area where you could eat but I'd suggest taking your dinner home. I had the sweet and sour chicken dish. The small order was a good size; could easily fed two people. I got two meals out of it. The dish wasn't too spicy which I like but you could ask for the spicy version when you order. The menu isn't too extensive but covers all the basics. Since I was the lone customer, I got to chat with the owner, a nice Thai lady, while she cooked my meal. The food was fabulous. Just fabulous. I used to date a Thai girl a million years ago, and I can tell you that Upin Thai's food is legit. Upin has very limited seating, so I had to eat in the corner while standing. It was still worth it. One of the few Thai restaurants in central/western North Dakota, and it's surprisingly good. Portions are large enough to split into two meals and reasonably priced. Pad Thai was delicious. The sauce was lighter than most I've usually had, which was a nice surprise. Delicious Thai food. Some of the best I have had. The place is a hole in the wall. The only thing keeping me from giving them 5 stars is their lack of seating. They have 5 barstools up against a rail you could eat at if you wanted. I would consider it carry out only. I really liked the fact that you could see the cook and she was adding spices right out of a jar. No premade sauces here. Not much flexiblity in their menu. I called in my order, and based on reviews, got pork pad thai, yum yum chicken (both spicy) and shrimp spring rolls. When I arrived, the place was crowded with several groups waiting. My food wasn't ready and I found out they were out of spring rolls. Bummer. The 2 small orders fed my co-worker and I for dinner with enough for lunch the next day. The pad thai was a little dry and definitely needed more of the sauce that came with it. But the flavor was fantastic with just the right kick. I have to say that I was not impressed with this place the first few times I ate here. It was run very inefficiently to the point where call in orders were taking an hour and a half when promised 20 minutes. The food was also inconsistently made.
