We dined at El Sombrero Mexican and ordered the veg fajitas. They were really great and honestly one of the best we've had. The flavors were fresh, well-seasoned, and overall very satisfying. The portion size was also very good and quite generous, making the meal filling and great value. We also enjoyed the complimentary salsa and chips, which were a nice touch and went really well with the meal. Overall, it was a great experience. read more

Server was quick and responsive! Food was flavorful. Daiquiri yummy! Kids ordered off side menu and no questions asked. Very busy place and customers seemed happy. Clean. Prices very fair! read more

Accidentally stopped here THINKING we were at another "El" restaurant that is actually rated well, thanks to the map & our own impatience with not reading the sign. Sigh Same plain ole ground beef filling in everything, same canned sauce poured over everything - it all tasted the same. Thinnest queso I've ever seen - we poured it over the food to try to salvage both. This is the least Mexican restaurant I've even been in, and I'm counting Taco Bell. read more

El Sombrero, commonly and affectionately called "El Som" or "The Som" by locals, is one of the most popular restaurants in Dickinson. I mean literally, it is THE place to go there. There are very few other options and El Som is always consistent. I have come here over the years more times than I can count. Every time that I visit now, or when family from out of town came, El Som is always assumed to be on the list of places to go somewhere in the duration of the trip. Anyone who is familiar with Dickinson or used to live there knows El Som and misses it dearly. They are best known for their white queso. It really is fantastic. It's thick and creamy and super addicting. People I know that have had El Som queso try so hard to find a close match to it all over out of state at other Mexican restaurants, but nothing can quite beat it. I've always liked El Som. If you don't know what to get, their famous dish is the "P5"- chicken and rice smothered in queso. But I quite like their fajita quesadilla. As I was in town, I visited here again pretty recently, and I felt less than impressed. In fact, I was actually kind of grossed out going this time. The restaurant is just kind of crusty and in the 10+ years I've been going it has hardly changed. Most of the time this can be a really good thing for a restaurant but for El Som I feel that it isn't. I don't know. I don't think it's quite all it's cracked up to be, but it's slim pickings for food in little old Dickinson, ND, and no one knows actual good Mexican food. I suppose I might be back just because it's one of the few options and only places to go, but I won't be near as happy about it. read more

Serviceable food and acceptable service. Very accommodating of a substitution. Nice basic margarita. Tostada was crispy, beans were delicious. My friend said the rice was great (I didn't have any). Cheese enchilada was just okay, sauce was just okay. read more

Food was fair, service was horrible due to the fact they were short staffed, our server was super nice, overwhelmed with all the tables she was trying to manage but all in all did a fair job. We may go back but want to try the other Mexican restaurants in town. read more

As a Texan, I have had my fair share of good Mexican (and Tex Mex) food, and I was pleasantly surprised with this place. Food was probably a 3.5 to 4 star experience, but the restaurant itself was a bit rundown and totally messy; I assume they are understaffed like most places these days. Chips and debris all over the floors and tables with no one sitting at them anymore still covered in the dirty dishes. Not super inviting. As for the food, I ordered their stewed pork burrito, and it had a good flavor and was a huge portion. Their menu is extensive, so anyone should be able to find something they can enjoy. read more

We stopped in Dickinson for the night and this was right next to our hotel. The parking lot was full so that's a good sign, right? We were seated right away and our waitress was quick to the table. Drinks and food were delivered quickly, very little wait time. The beer was cold and the food was delicious. My husband had the #15 combo and I ordered a beef and bean burrito. Both were very good and filling! read more

From the moment we walked in, it was clear that the restaurant was overwhelmed, even though we were seated in a few minutes. Most of the tables that were unoccupied hadn't been cleared, and those that were weren't wiped clean. Where customers were seated, they had no food in front of them and most looked annoyed. After we were seated, the first thing our waiter did was apologize to the diners behind us and tell them it would be a few more minutes before their food arrived. And then he told us that the Kirchen was slow so it may take a while for us to get our food. Overall, our pre dining experience did not bode well. And though we didn't feel like it took very long for our order to arrive, we were disappointed with the quality and preparation when it did. The tomato based sauces leaned toward Italian rather than Mexican, and the enchilada fillings were apparently unseasoned and quite dry. This was by far the least fulfilling and most insipid Mexican meal we have had in a very long time. The atmosphere was adequate, but nothing spectacular. Bottom line is that, while we see potential here, it simply was not a god dining experience read more

The food was good, and served quickly. Service was hectic, they are understaffed, like just about everyone these days. The restaurant itself is tired, worn and dirty. It needs a major face lift, and someone to clean up the garbage that's piled in corners and the trash off of the floor. With a little work and love, could be a great place. Currently, I wouldn't return. read more

Good margaritas! Friendly staff. Freshly made guacamole! Good food. Good chips and salsa.

Went here a couple of times in June, 2022, while working in the area. On both occasions, the service was fast and friendly. Being a one-topper, I sat at the bar and, on the first visit, I asked for the biggest frozen margarita they had. They brought me a fishbowl on a stem! One of the biggest margaritas I have ever been served at a restaurant. I have to add that this was the best tasting frozen margarita I found in Dickinson! Chips, salsa, and queso were all very good. Ordered a Chile Relleno ala carte with queso instead of red sauce. I am not a big fan of crispy rellenos (I prefer the soft) but this one was very tasty and was probably one of the best crispy ones I have eaten. Came on a bed of rice with a little corn in it which was a perfect compliment. Only restaurant that I visited twice in my three weeks in Dickinson. read more

Fairly mediocre Mexican food. People rave about the P5 but I'm honestly not sure what the big deal is. The drinks are bland and taste cheap. The chips and salsa are fine. The service is hit or miss but usually slow and inattentive (but always friendly). I prefer Los Cabos in Dickinson. read more

I have to be honest. I'm getting sort of tired writing poor reviews. I'm not picky, easy to please and will eat anything but olives. I expect hot food to be hot, cold food cold and service to just be moderately friendly and attentive. See where this review is going? I had to repeat everything to my server 2 or 3 times. She was not paying attention. She ask a question, stare off into space and I'd say it again. Bad night or bad server? Both is my guess but I don't really care. If it's that bad, go home. The recommended p5. Grilled chicken on a bed of rice, smothered in cheese sauce on a bed of rice with tortillas. Ha Chicken may have been boiled but was not grilled. The cheese sauce was runny colored water. The bed of rice wasn't even a futon of rice. The tamale was a tiny thing with a plop of cold beans and meat. The chips seemed stale and the salsa watered down chunky V8. No reason I can think of to come back and not only am I leaving hungry, I wasted calories and money coming here. read more

I have no idea why this is "Dickinsons favorite restaurant on Yelp". I did not expect anything better than fresh Taco Bell from a Mexican restaurant this far north. That said this fell short in a number of ways. 1. The entire staff used fake Mexican accents. 2. The salsa was tomato juice. The really hot stuff was ground up red chili peppers in tomato juice. 3. The flour tortillas were thinner than tissue paper. 4.The food was so bad, I payed and left after a few bites. Maybe I didn't order the right thing, maybe it was an off day for the real cook. Either way the food I was served was probably in large part from cans. Do yourself a favor and go Taco Bell when you're up this way. read more

Honestly... If i could give this place a half a star I think it would do this place justice. Came in thinking this was going to be a great place to eat, since the reviews are "amazing..". Failure on you ppl who posted a review! A big "F" on your part. I walked in noticed the restaurant a mess, looked dead and boring! So we get our seats and look through the menu. Order a margarita, took a sip and thought I was drinking mermaid piss because was soooo salty I could feel my gums buckle. Order our food which was $30-40 which was HORRIBLE! They season the chicken, beef, shrimp horribly! Felt like i was eating a toddler creation plate. Honestly dont even waste your time or $$here. I've been from Cail, AZ all the way to NY and never had bad "mexican" food. I doubt there is real Mexican cooking this crap. Big NO for me. ‍ On top of that service was awful! Took 15 mins to get a refill and another 10 to get napkins. Be mindful this place wasn't packed and our cups were still dirty from previous ppl slapping their lips to the cup. Smh just don't go.. ‍‍ read more

I'm with Ashlea L. On her previous review. Heard from a ton of people how great this place is. Continue to hear it and I've been coming to Dickinson and the rest of ND for a year or so now. The three of us were promptly seated. Server comes over shortly after and drinks were ordered. I'm not a fan of tequila so I had a beer. The other two members of my party ordered margaritas. One wanted a margarita with an extra shot of tequila. And some tequila on the side. Crazy request I know. Wasn't able to meet the request and we ordered our food. I got a sampler platter. Rice over cooked. Beans had no real taste. Even though it's the same orange rice and beans you get EVERYWHERE. Chips and salsa we get as a starter were fine. I LOVE Mexican. Tex mex and everything in between. Feel bad complaining since everyone else seems to get awesome food. Could have been an off time. I'll visit again to see but otherwise I guess Qdoba or the nearby Taco Bell will have to suffice. read more

I actually really love their food. Until tonight I would have given them 5 stars. Great help, great food. Usually very fast. Tonight it literally took 57 minutes to get our food. Including seating time 1 hour 10 minutes. Yes they were busy. We paid at the register since one of the owners was there. He didn't offer anything but excuses for the time frame. We gave him several opportunities to fix without insisting on anything. There is another Mexican restaurant in town who will see us next time! Don't discount them, but steer clear on weekends unless you've got all the time in the world. Disappointed in the lack of customer service. read more

This one is a bit spicy but I'm being honest. As a man of Mexican manufacturing, I've been insulted before but being told I'm eating Mexican cuisine while eating here trumps any previous insult. Little Mexican old ladies would die instantly if they were presented anything here. Service is prompt. That's on lock but portion size has gone down as their prices have climbed. Their cash cow, the queso, is so heavily diluted it's evident they're stretching it. It was far far thicker and better 8 years ago. Lastly some of the waiters act like they own the place and have been truly arrogant and rude to me a few times. I just wanted more diet coke. If you want to waste your money, burn it. If you want Mexican cuisine hit up El Paricutin. read more

El Sombrero is great. The atmosphere isn't modern, but the food is so amazing. Salsa was freshly made (not out of a can) the horchata was freshly made ( not with a premix). Everything was superb!! I didn't get a chance to eat a meal, just drinks and chips. The salsa was fairly flavorless, chips were fresh but the combination hit the spot. Don't worry about asking for the hotter sauce, it's nothing to fear. Ordered the margaritas. The mix was a Neon green concoction that was poured out of a very large container sitting on the end of the bar. I'm pretty sure there was no tequila in it and frankly I'm not sure it was ever added. The Coronita is a margarita with a small corona upside down in it, thank heavens quality control of a corona is fairly manageable and it tasted like a beer at best. Overall a lemon crystal light looking and tasting beverage with essences of beer and all for $12.99 a piece leave something to be desired. Not impressed. Average. Not incredibly clean, but friendly and certainly courteous. read more

We were traveling thru and took a chance on this place. We are so glad we Did! We were seated quickly, staff was friendly. I don't reccomend the guacamole as it it out of a package and the chips were greasy and cold so I wasn't expecting much BUT, my friend and I each ordered a P-3. One with steak, one with chicken. Hands down the worst Mexican food we have ever had. They cook with a microwave and nothing is fresh! My husbands taco, enchilada and tostada all had the exact same 3 ingredients day old ground beef, canned refried beans and cheese! No fresh tomatoes no lettuce no sour cream no onion no guacamole NOTHING!! It taste horrible!! There is nothing authentic about this Mexican restaurants food! Worst service ever. I sat at the bar for 20 mins before anyone would talk to me. Finally the owner threw a menu at me. I heard the food was good, so I let it go. Food was cheap Mexican. Super cheap, runny Guac and the steak was all fat. The owner never came back to see if I was ok, I sat with empty plates for 15 mins and finally the owner threw a receipt at me. As I checked out. I voiced my concerns to the owners wife taking the money and she said, oh well, we are busy, we don't have the time to talk to you....when I arrived I was one of 4 tables and the only person at the bar. Spend the extra money and walk across the dirt road and go to el paricutin....it's totally worth it. Not impressed. When I walked into the restaurant there was a young gentleman standing by the cash register talking on the phone. He stayed on the phone for about three minutes avoiding eye contact with me, and I had to wait for several of the wait staff to walk by me before I was seated. The food was fair. I live in the land of Tex-Mex so I am not going to knock the food too much. Fair, not good, not bad just kind of there. After my order was taken the wait staff never came back to the table. My drink sat empty at the edge of the table for my entire meal, along with my napkin that I had to use to clean up some salsa I had spilled. I never received a refill, or a clean napkin. When my food was brought out to my table it was delivered by what appeared to be an eleven year old boy. I am all for family business, but you need to teach them how to do the job correctly. Not just flop you meal on the table and scurry away. When I had finished my meal I tried to get my check. I asked two different people to get my check for me. It never arrived. I finally just walked up the cashier, and told them what I had ordered so I could leave. On a happier note the salsa was good. Jason read more

My friends and I stopped in for an early dinner after visiting the Badlands and were a little disappointed that our waitress was not a small child as mentioned in the previous reviews. we were looking forward to THAT much of an authentic experience. However, we were there before school was out so maybe that's why we had an older teenager as our waitress. Who, by the way, was great. Never had a glass with less than 1/4 liquid in it. Our orders were quick and correct (rare out here). I had a great salad with tender grilled chicken, thoroughly cooked and still juicy. The atmosphere was nice, very welcoming and clean.
