If you're a truck driver passing through North Dakota, I'd definitely recommend stopping by. First, shoutout to my server, Taya. Customer service was A1 from start to finish. She was friendly, professional, took my order quickly, and made the whole experience enjoyable. I ordered the fried pickles and fried mushrooms, and both came out fast and were prepared really well. I'd give the fried pickles a 7.8/10 and the fried mushrooms a 7.1/10. No complaints at all. The thing that really stood out to me, though, was something I've never seen before. I sat at the front bar, and instead of regular bar stools, they had what felt like actual high-quality truck seats. As a truck driver, that was such a cool touch. Comfortable seating like that makes a difference after a long day on the road, and it's something that sets Dakota Diner apart from other places I've visited. I also owe the staff an apology. I'd been driving so hard that I was completely absent-minded and accidentally started walking out without paying my bill. Taya actually had to run outside to get my attention. I was honestly pretty embarrassed, but they were incredibly understanding and handled the situation with kindness and professionalism. I really appreciated the grace they showed me. We were on the search for a quick dinner that included some North Dakota classics, including the (All entrees come with a side of a type of potato). The Dakota diner staff provides the warm diner feel that is comforting after a long road trip. The interior also resembles a diner, offering a variety of breakfast and lunch options that are served all day. We also ordered a sausage and cheese omelette, which came with a side of hashbrowns, which I thought were pretty good. What I also liked about this diner was their soup and salad bar, available for just an additional few dollars, which was nice since it can be tough to get some greens in during a road trip. It came with unlimited trips to the soup and salad bar, and the salad bar also surprisingly included potato salad, pasta vinaigrette salad, and macaroni salad. So I was in Dickenson for work and my coworker and I wanted to try something different. So we choose the Dakota Dinner. Im so happy we did. Service was great, our waitress was energetic and answered all of our questions and we asked a lot. I had the (i hope i spell it correctly) Fleischkuechle it was excellent. My coworker had the Hot Beef which she devoured. This place is nothing fancy but it exceeded our expectations for service, food and Ambience. read more

This place is overrated. It probably enjoys the ratings It does because most of the clientele are locals. The food is OK, not great. Service is warm and welcoming but an element of ADD-like behavior prevails. In some cases we had asked for an item two or three times before it was finally delivered in a context where there weren't a lot of customers needing service. Many of the servers appear over 50 in age and their physical condition may be a factor in service. Recommended. If you rein in your expectations you may find it a delightful stop. read more

I eat here 2 to 4 times a week, food is always good. Tonight service sucked. My server did not know they were out of what I ordered resulting in our food coming at different times. Our server did not check on us he was busy eating and on his phone at the counter. We had to get up and get someone from the kitchen to get ketchup and mustard. I was just in there tonight around 7:30pm and your waitress brought me a glass of water and would not come back to the table to get my order. I thought writing a note on this would help however it just came to me that she would probably get a promotion behind this. Thought it was a cute place so we stopped. The waitress came over right away and brought water and menus. That was it. People were coming in and they were getting waited on, we however got completely ignored. We sat down and 2 other parties sat down after we did. The waitress took their orders before we even got out menu's. After finally ordering we waited 20 minutes before we received our food. Was our first time visiting this restaurant. We shop in Dickinson a lot and we are always looking for new places to eat while there. We would defiantly not go back again. They had a soup I won't name (hard to spell and I don't want the secret to get out!) which was wonderfully traditional and yummy! Ok I stopped in Dickinson, ND again. I almost wasn't going to do a review cause I was watching TV in my truck while I ate my dinner to go. This time I had the beef plate.... Stop! This was absolutely one of the best flavors to touch my pallet in a long time... what a great meal.. I had a whole order and ate it all. Side was the boscth soup... like a vegetarian soup with .. it was good I didn't think it really matched the beef plate flavor and was very filling. That was my fault.. could've had a salad... glad I didn't tho the soup was a good experience... the beef plate gets a 10/10.. I really liked this place, a real oasis off the freeway if you've been putting in the miles or time crossing North Dakota. The truck stop across the way had pretty sad fare. So I lobbied for walking across the parking lot to this place. I wasn't disappointed. They serve breakfast all day. I couldn't resist and ordered the eggs Benedict. The Hollandaise sauce was very good. My traveling companions also liked their food too, a cup of some local soup that I had never heard of, a ND thing, and a burger. I've read the other reviews and can believe that you could receive poor service here, but we didn't fast, efficient and friendly. read more

Lost order, when food came out it was cold . Wife's first bite had a hair in it. Definitely bad experience.

Unfortunately, there just isn't a lot open late or early in this town. We just happened to notice this place open on the way out of town so we popped in. What was cool were all the trucker seats at the bar. In fact, we might have been the only non-truckers. Ok, a bit of an exaggeration but that's the basic feel of the place. We just had a basic breakfast with grits. Everything was alright and maybe a slight notch up from Denny's but our expectations weren't exactly high going in. What I would suggest is for the staff to either get it together or not bicker or gossip in front of customers. That just doesn't work. read more

Was actually suggested to try this restaurant by a friend. Must say was a very nice experience even though I happened to go during a lunch rush. Wasn't really sure what to expect the parking lot was full and probably about 50 or so people where already seated. Drink orders were taken quite quickly and a quick turnaround in bringing them back to the table. As well as the meal after my order was placed. Never felt like I was rushed or had to make a quick decision for my meal. Ample amount of time given to be able to place my order even though it was in the midst of a lunch rush. Also have to complement all of the weight stuff they have their act together and know what they are doing from being able to tell you their specials to making suggestions of items on their menu. And by that I do not mean trying to upsell anything. I felt as though if I went into the restaurant in a bad mood I would definitely walk out with a smile on my face due to the hospitality and all-around upbeat mood they were all in. Definitely a place I will frequently return to and would suggest to anyone that wants a good home cooked mom-and-pop meal. Let's face it, the place is a dump. It's a diner next to a truck stop with less than mediocre food and service. I ordered a prime rib French dip with fries. There was nothing prime about my meal. A few slices of roast beef shoved on a hoagie with undercooked fries. So the positive? It's a cheap meal. A lot of senior citizens go there for the inexpensive price tag. So if you're driving through and looking for a crappy meal other than fast food, Dakota a diner is your place. read more

Wow. Well, it's a diner off the highway in the middle of North Dakota, you know? You definitely get the real experience when you eat here. Well, I only ate here once so I'm not an expert. But I believe the chairs at the bar were seats from big rigs, and our waitress looked at us like we were idiots when we asked what the "hot beef" and "hot hamburger" were, and how the hot hamburger was different than the other hamburgers. Like, why was it in a different part of the menu? Apparently it was different. My friend told me I should get the full experience and order the hot beef. I will upload a picture. I have to say, it was not very good. The mashed potatoes were good, but that was about it. Just don't order it. My friend got French toast and eggs and those were fine. I would go with that. We were pretty sure our waitress hated us, but after I told her I liked the hot beef (lies) she warmed up to us. Oh, those Midwesterners. :) read more
