Very glad I stopped by JD'S, was craving some bbq and it could not have been better! I got the platter with shredded pork and beef brisket. The meats were both perfect -- the brisket was practically melting in my mouth, it was so tender and juicy. The fries were good, and the cornbread was a nice touch, but it was really the meat that stole the show. As should be the case at any great bbq joint! They also have a great selection of drinks, with plenty of beers on tap, along with frozen drinks/spirits. Overall one of the better bbq experiences I've had! I had a hamburger and fries and my wife had a hamburger and onion rings for a late lunch. The burgers were way overcooked and dry, the fries were stale and cold. The wife said the onion rings were good but also cold. I was at this establishment 2 yrs ago while I was working in the area the staff was young and energetic pleased to serve. The food was great and that's why I wanted to bring my wife this time. The staff this time was eating at the bar and seemed to want to pawn us off on other staff. Offered multiple patties for the burgers and when asked what size they were said "normal size" and when asked about drinks she didn't know what options there were. The place was almost empty on a Saturday at 1:30. We were told to seat ourselves so we picked a booth and it's February so it's cold outside. Well after ordering I had to switch booths because there was a cold air blowing down on us from the ceiling. The men's bathroom the urinal was out of service also Overall probably one of the worst experience I have had at a restaurant/sports bar I can remember. Will not go there again and do not recommend. My son comes here weekly and I guess tonight must have been an off night for the cook. He got a chilli dog and he said it was a lot smaller. More bun then dog. The food was good and the atmosphere was alright. The meat was kinda dry, but it was tender and flavorfull. It was average for the food, maybe a little expensive overall, but good food. If you want a good solid smoked meat this is the best place to go in town. But if your looking for out of this world smoked foods, I would just pass. Had a good server but the food was absolutely disgusting. Ordered boneless chicken wings and only received 5 pieces. But that's not the worst part, all of them were just a round mushy dough ball with absolutely no chicken meat in them. We also ordered chicken burgers. One crispy and one grilled. To be honest we couldn't tell the difference. They were both breaded and looked like processed cheap chicken patties and not the real chicken breast meat. There flavor or lack there of was very disappointing. The French fries were under cooked and half raw and what they called ranch was like water and tasted like someone added a whole bottle of Lowery seasoning into it. Service was excellent. Food absolutely amazing. Tender, juicy, not overly seasoned beef brisket. Their house mild bbq sauce was a perfect accompaniment but not needed. Baked beans had a nice balance of smoke, sweet and a little kick with chunks of meat. I've eaten bbq all over the country and lived in west Texas for 4 years and this is up there! What I remember the most about our experience was how hard the entire staff worked. I think they had 3 women working in a full restaurant the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and I'm guessing 2 people in the kitchen. The brisket, brat, pulled ribs, corn bread, and beans were outstanding. Ok everything. Everything was outstanding. We had to wait for a table but that means it's good. It was messy as hell in there but that's what you get for being a peanut-shells-on-the-floor establishment. I hope they can find some some more staff soon! read more

Yes, yes, this IS my 3rd BBQ stop in a matter of nearly the same number of days. It's important to note that my hubs is a smoke-loving, king of meat, pitmaster... so, I have high expectations. We read one detailed review that drew is into this currently 3 star stop. There weren't many patrons as we entered by the bar & no signs to tell us to sit or wait. I used the old faithful "I'm heading to the ladies room" trick & left the hubs to figure it out. The gal that gave us menus a few minutes later asked for our drink orders - we both ordered beers listed on untapped- shortly after, the gal at the bar came over for clarification. I think our gal was new (we all start somewhere), while the other was well-seasoned. Both were personable. Food was up quickly & several items, including dides, are housemade. The brisket sandwhich is sliced, not chopped- only one slice had much of a fap cap remaining, nothing excessive- the sauce was fabulous! The bun held up to the huge portion of juicy beef, sauce, bacon, cheese & onion rings... not your average sandwich. The chili cheese fries were on point. My sampling of the thick, tender but firm smoky baked beans with meaty chunks & melt in your mouth sweet pulled pork didn't disappoint. The price was reasonable- staff worked as a team- establishment was clean- food hit the spot... this was another too big for me meals. This was our second time going. The first time our waitress was phenomenal, our food came out quick and was cooked amazingly. We came back again thinking the service would be the same but we were sadly mistaken. Our waitress was the blonde with glasses. It took 30 minutes for her to take our order when it wasn't that busy. She refused to tell us what meats were out until after we tried to order, and when we did get our food it was cold. My sister took me here for lunch. I had no idea what to expect. I was surprised to see gyro on the menu. I threw caution to the wind and ordered one. It was great. The fries where good. I took one star away for the service. I needed to get on my bike and head to Bismarck. I asked for the bill and waited, and waited, and waited. Finally I went to the server and said I needed to leave and he could give me the bill or not. He said he was sorry but he had been busy, he was playing with a TV remote. Let's be honest about bbq: You're judged on your sauce + your brisket. So here's the rundown for JD's The smoked chicken was done perfectly. The fries are AMAZING. Super crispy. The brisket with onion sandwich was so good. The hoagie roll surprised us- sometimes you get a bbq sandwich and you know the bread is going to be average but this is a good roll they use. Bravo! I liked the sauces- they didn't amaze me- but sometimes sauces have too much kick- these didn't. I'd give them an "A" for sauce. Being from the south- I'm used to a sweet sauce- which I didn't find- but maybe that's just not a North Dakota thing. They have ketchup sriracha which I appreciate. Only one complaint today- Mac and cheese wasn't great. Noodles a little over cooked- but that's easy to do. And the fries were so good I wouldn't bother with the Mac anyway. This place was terrible. It took forever to be seated. The waitress, while nice was really disinterested in waiting on us. It took forever to get out food and when we did a couple of the sides were served late. The food was so gross none of us finished it. It was cold and mushy and before my table of 5 had finished the different dishes we'd got we were all having sharp pains in our stomach so none of us even finished the gross food. Also, not a huge fan of how frigid they kept their building, rave music they were blaring or the massive amount of peanut shells on the ground. I can't believe the amazing reviews for this place, I guess people in Dickinson love terrible slop food. Out on the fringe of Dickinson, North Dakota is a fun spot called J.D.'s BBQ. The walls are covered in Americana, the floor covered in peanut shells ("it's a thing" my Mother said, when I commented on the mess), and a few TV's were catching me up on what I missed from preseason football. We could tell it was one of those best-kept-secrets kind of spots. Sure enough, when our meals arrived we learned we had found a place worth pocketing. Dad had a Chili Burger (the smallest of four potential sizes... ) and Mom a delectable Brisket Sandwich (she beat me to it). The brisket was fantastically cooked and vociferously flavorful. J.D.'s is smart enough not to let more than their guest-applied sauce pack the meat with flavor, so that brisket shone through with every amazing bite. My pulled pork sandwich was equally tender and simply seasoned. It was refreshing to get some pulled pork I could sauce myself and appreciate for its flavor alone... and it was well complimented with the grilled onions that sat atop it. The biggest reason why I'm giving J.D.'s a shout out, though, is it's phenomenal baked beans... I know you're probably thinking I'm overreacting... but these suckers were sincerely among the best I've ever had. You could TASTE the SMOKE in them... so good. This is a great little BBQ joint with a good bar in Dickinson! Grab a bucket of peanuts to munch on while you're waiting on your food. Just throw the shells in the floor ... my kinda place! The portion sizes were very generous. 4 large ribs, a big helping of pork, and two large slices of beef brisket. The baked beans were thick and delicious with a spicy bite. My Boy's chicken fingers were a bit overdone and tough, he only ate half of one and made his meal out of the fries. Cool ambiance with plenty of TVs that would be great for game day. JD's is a great local restaurant with a laid back hometown feel. The service was perfect, with the right amount of attention without being a nuisance. The burgers imho are the stars of the menu followed by the BBQ. The steak was cooked perfectly but didn't have a lot of flavor. The ribs had a great smokey flavor and were tender without getting mushy or dry. If there had bern more rub on them they would have been perfect. The chili was a little more sweet than spicey but that is probably just a regional approach. In summary: very good BBQ with incredibly tasty (and large) burgers. read more
