Our family stopped in to purchase coffee and to check out the local bison and elk meat. Turns out The Wurst Shop was the BEST shop. Everyone there was extremely friendly and helpful. We got to sample the sausage and bologna before we decided which one to purchase. We ended up purchasing a whole lot more. There's local honey, all sorts of meat, seafood, and cheese. My visit to this part of the country was last minute and short, but I knew I couldn't miss out on the Wurst Shop. Every summer we order their seasoning and have it shipped out of state and make our own country style and summer sausage, so I was especially excited to bring home their sausage today! When we arrived they were closed! Luckily, the side door was open and we met the owner who let us shop! What a nice guy! My to-go order included mixed country style sausage (fanatic flavor), smoked ribs (yummy - I wish I picked up more), beef sticks (tasty homemade beef jerky that only lasted two days before being gobbled up by my teenagers), and apricot kuchen (another item I wish I had gotten more of because it was so creamy and sweet). If you don't live in the area, you can always purchase their secret spice mix ($15 to make 50lbs sausage) and have it shipped to you and make your own version of the Wurst Shop sausage! read more

Neat little meat market, too bad the kitchen was still closed for renovations when I came. They have typical cold meats and cheeses, a freezer section selling anything from elk to alligator, cheese curds, slim jims, jerky, kuchen, cheeses, brats, spaetzle, and even local horsersdish. I ended up buying some jalapeño jerky, smoked pork sausage and smoked mixed sausage to take back to Texas. They were nice enough to vacuum seal and wrap all items in butcher paper to help them keep cool for the day. The jerky was not spicy to me and I could barely taste the jalapeno flavor actually. The smoked sausages were a little on the bland side compared to others I've had across the US. Also, the smokiness was not very apparent, like many smoked sausages in the South. read more

I just love cramming a huge sausage in my mouth so I can savor every bit of it. There are two separate parts of this business: There is a meat shop and a little lunch section. Kevin works the Bratwurst Bar and is very friendly. The food isn't anything fancy, but it's damn good. He cooks up a variety of sausages including beef, sauerkraut, cheddar and jalapeno. I'm sure there are more, but that's what was on the menu today. A side of potato salad, at $2, is a little pricy but it is home made and definitely not bought from somewhere else. The shop portion has a wide selection of frozen meats, and seafood, including some non-standard fare like buffalo, elk and venison. There is a large selection of frozen kuchen too (German cakes). As if that wasn't enough, there's a selection of fresh sausages and they'll cut your steaks to order. I will definitely be back. read more

Authentic german food or fusion w flare. Food was decent and balanced. We tried cajun, curry, elk, and cheddar w sides of german potato salad, green beans, and Texas potato salad. Service was friendly. Only complaint is the sign and website said it opened at 8, we got there at 10:45 and they said they weren't serving until 11. We sat and waited but others came and jumped line on us. The line was VERY slow to move and the sausages had to be finished heating in a microwave which i am sure influenced mouth feel and flavor. We travel a lot and sometimes we end up in small or less-travelled-to places. At times like that, finding somewhere truly unique is a real treasure. Yesterday, while stopping for a quick lunch, we went to The Wurst Shop In Dickinson because it was #1 on Trip Advisor but also because of the name. I'm not personally fond of sausage products, but those who were with me said the varieties of wurst available were spectacular. I ended up eating their homemade spaghetti and it was far better than homemade! To make the experience even better, the head chef would take breaks from the kitchen by joining in on some musical jam sessions that often happen at the restaraunt. What a charming experience. Great, great brats, and lots of variety. Cajun, Italian, curry, original, and more. The sandwich was awesome, with all the fixins, plus he made this dipping sauce for the Italian made from different balsamic vinegars and a few other secret ingredients. The sides were awesome also.. Got a half & half, so I could try a few. Loved both.. the cucumber onion salad ("gherkin salad") and the jalapeño corn (which was similar to a casserole, but less sticky/cheesy.. really really good). Just a tiny spot with some amazing food. The people were nice and the food was glorious. I would recommend it to anyone looking to venture outside of the hum drum spots we are all used to. The only negative thing is that it doesn't open until noon and closes early at six. I probably saw 20 people show up and leave because of the late opening time. Stopped in as we drove through on I-94 based on the reviews. At first was a bit skeptical - service was chaotic and curt, and lots of food uncovered and exposed to customers waiting in line. And there in only seating for about 18 customers. But surprise, we scored a table and the food really was delicious. Plain brats and mango habanero brats both yummy, and sides of Mac n cheese, broccoli salad and potato salad were remarkably good. Turned out to be a welcome respite from all the chain food crap along the highway. I'd go back for sure. read more

They have so much meat...sausage, beef sticks, summer sausage, elk steaks, scallops, head cheese, liver wurst, buffalo...the list never ends! I got to try some of the summer sausage, and it was quite tasty. The also have a large selection of food mixes, spices, and condiments, with and emphasis on German foods and meat seasoning. In the refrigerator you can find cheese curds and special European pastries and baked goods. They carry Killebrew cream soda, which I discovered I love, but is sadly only available in a few northern states. I picked up a German cookbook on my last visit - I have honestly never heard of many of the dishes, but am excited to try out some recipes! read more

Went for lunch at their German Chalet/ Brat Bar after hearing about it opening last summer. OH MY!!!! That was GOOOD! I ordered a huge sauerkraut brat, with a side of Knoefla and German potato salad. Also had a microbrew root beer. Everything had fresh, delicious ingredients, no Sysco canned food here! This is an amazing place to get your meats, because the selection is amazing and also the staff is extremely helpful. If you have a question they are always kind and understanding. I really like the food here! It's one of these best places to eat in town. However, the photos on yelp are a bit misleading. There isn't anyone in a chef uniform making things fresh. It starts as almost buffet style except you order and they pull food from the warmers. The brats are cooked on a grill fresh for you and your bun can be toast as well as cheese. We were enroute to visit Theodore Roosevelt NP and I had picked this spot out as a potential hidden gem. Located right off I-94 I was salivating thinking about the chance to eat all the different speciality brats and sides. Unfortunately, we happened to arrive on a day where they were having technical difficulties and as such their kitchen/grill was closed. Bummer. Yet the sausage gods were smiling on us that day. The owner chatted us up, and upon hearing about our cross country road trip, took it upon himself to at least whip up a small taste of what we were hoping for. A simple brat dog but I was blown away by the effort to make us feel welcomed and appreciated for visiting his shop despite the unfortunate circumstances. He recommended places we should visit as we continued our trip into Montana, all while proudly and kindly serving local customers coming to purchase their renowned meats. Aside from their prepared foods menu which looks AMAZING - for travelers we were eager to splurge on all the different unique goodies they also offer such as multiple flavors of Uncle Bud's deep fried peanuts, some delicious cured meats (these were so good to snack on while driving), and a few spices/seasonings we used for some campground meals. Most disappointing culinary experience in Dickinson. The Wurst Shop is certainly known for their authentic Bratwurst - however the in-house bistro addition unfortunately is absolutely clueless how to prepare and serve the wide verity of offered sausages. Everyone of their sausages are floating in a murky water bath. Perhaps the owner should lookup "Bratwurst" in Google Translate and try to prepare the sausage the intended way. Boiling a sausage is an absolute no-no, and serving canned cold sauerkraut with it - wow??? Btw- the bistro server actually collected the water-bathed sausage with her hands (yes she had a blue synthetic cleaning-glove on) - instead of using a food tong. Yikes. The festive and cozy atmosphere however did not make up for the horrible and expensive ($25 fir2) one-time experience!!! read more
