Did not know what to expect of a BBQ restaurant in North Dakota, but I was impressed. I ordered the 3-meat platter and my son had the chicken tenders. The beer menu is large, but some draft choices were not available such as a Hefe that did not have have added fruits to the brew. Ended up with a brown IPA that was not bad. Service was great and the servers were very friendly. Our beverages were served quick and our meals arrived within a reasonable amount of time. The portion sizes were very generous. 4 large ribs, a big helping of pork, and two large slices of beef brisket. The baked beans were thick and delicious with a spicy bite. My Boy's chicken fingers were a bit overdone and tough, he only ate half of one and made his meal out of the fries. Cool ambiance with plenty of TVs that would be great for game day. Peanuts are available at each table and throw the shells on the floor. Good location with plenty of parking. read more

JD's is a great local restaurant with a laid back hometown feel. The service was perfect, with the right amount of attention without being a nuisance. The burgers imho are the stars of the menu followed by the BBQ. The steak was cooked perfectly but didn't have a lot of flavor. The ribs had a great smokey flavor and were tender without getting mushy or dry. If there had bern more rub on them they would have been perfect. The chili was a little more sweet than spicey but that is probably just a regional approach. In summary: very good BBQ with incredibly tasty (and large) burgers. read more

First off, what's with the peanut shells all over the floor? I guess that's a thing, but it wasn't my thing. Moving on - I ordered the drink special, a long island ice tea. I have had plenty in my day and this one was atrocious. I had to get up and go to the bar, where the bartender insisted it was a LIIT and didn't make any offer to make another. It tasted more like sweet lemonade. Our server admitted it was her second day on the job. She was already flying solo and was on the struggle bus. She screwed up my partner's order, and never really checked on us after taking our order. I had to pretty much beg for a tap beer to replace my long island. The food itself was nothing great. I have definitely had better BBQ. Why on earth a restaurant would have someone solo on their second day of employment I have no idea, so I blame management instead of her. We ordered from JD's and when we received it the brisket was very dry with many hard pieces, the fries were soggy, and the cornbread was hard and dry. We hit JD's at around 3:00 on a Sunday afternoon. It was surprisingly busy for mid-afternoon, it looked like some oil industry folks were in the house. Let's break down the place: SERVICE: Above average. Our food arrived very quickly. The server was very attentive. We did hear some banter and horseplay among the (relatively young) employees - guessing the head honcho wasn't around. FOOD: --- Pork Platter: Portion size large, very good quality pork. No complaints here. --- Brisket Platter: So so. Lots of gristle and fat, which comes with the territory, I guess. Tasted pretty good, though. --- Macoroni Salad: No bueno. Bulk mac salad from the Sysco Truck or Sam's Club jammed into a styrofoam cup. Bad sides are common at rib places, I'm not complaining...just avoid the Mac salad. --- Beans: Outstanding. These could have been right off the Sysco Truck too for all I know, if so, they did something to them. Very tasty. Even if you don't like beans (like me), have the beans as a side. SAUCE: Just OK. BEER: Great beer selection, I had a Rogue Dead Guy(!) Nice. PRICING: Prices were very fair. If JD's were in a city, I'd give it three stars. If JD's were in Texas, I'd give it two stars. But for a rib joint in the Upper Midwest, I've gotta go with four stars. Maybe it should be five. Check it out if you're in the Queen City. read more

Had the prime rib special. Everything was very good. I loved the fries (well seasoned!!!), garlic mashed potatoes and the cornbread. The prime rib was well seasoned. It was a little over cooked for being ordered medium but the flavor was very good. The au jus was okay, tasted like it was made from a powder mix. Not my favorite. But the service was great...our server was super friendly and even got me butter for my cornbread to bring home. My husband and I enjoyed the ribs. They were tender and delicious. The spicy sauce at the table added just the right heat. The brisket and pork were good but nothing above average. The sweet potato fries tasted like sweet potatoes. The portion of 3 meats was enough for 2 people to share. We had Michelle as our waitress and she was just right. She kept our 1/2 1/2 tea filled plus told us about local event. I wished we had bought a big serving of ribs to go. We are traveling and may not be back that way. Three stars. For different reasons. Stood there for a good 8 minutes or so before I got a response, and it was simply " she's helping you right?" The confusion was evident. I said no. She said "OK as long as you are being helped." Again I said no, I'm not being helped. Then it dawned on her that no one else had approached me at all while a few waitresses were just standing around on their own. First day I was here, I had a great burger. The one with jalapeño bottle caps on it. Fantastic. 5 stars all the way around it so great. And then there is today. Which is a strong 1 and a weak 2. Got the brisket which, maybe you could consider it warm? It was room temperature. It lacked any flavor of its own, not even basic seasoning like salt. Come on, my kid knows how to use salt guys. It wasn't tough, but it wasn't tender like should be either. Overall pretty disappointing. The garlic potatoes? Tasted good. Until I accidentally bit into something extremely firm and so much garlic in it I had to spit it out and quickly drink some beer. All in all if it didn't have whatever the hell that was, great. The cornbread. The saddest part of my meal. It actually tasted fantastic! Except it was a little wet and soggy, and cold. Not like it wasn't warm, literally cold. Like it got pulled out of a fridge cold. Do not eat their barbeque. It's awful. Probably the worst meal I've had in my 4 years in Dickinson. Went here for dinner with a coworker and decided to order some traditional chicken wings as an appetizer, followed by the inferno pork sandwich (pulled pork sandwich with cheese and jalapeño bottle caps) with a side. We decided to get 12 wings, six with the hot peanut butter sauce, and six with the bourbon wing sauce. Both sauces were delicious, although the peanut butter one was not hot at all. Before I forget... these wings are stupidly large! It was the whole darn wing.... (see picture!!!) JD's officially ruined my standards for wings for every place to come. After we only ate about half of our wings (because who would think a wing would be half a chicken. Lol), we received our bbq sandwiches. The sandwich was delicious, but the true star was the home made Mac 'n cheese! That stuff was delicious. Next time I am skipping the bbq part and focusing all of my appetite on the wings. I was in Dickinson a couple of days after Thanksgiving on a mini Road trip throughout North Dakota. My girlfiend and I stopped at this place to grab a quick bite. I got the Inferno Burger and it was everything that I hoped for. I really can't say anything negative about this place , the food was good and fullfilling , the atmosphere is lax , and our waitress was attentive. We were passing through Dickinson on our way from Wisconsin to MONTANA. I was craving some burnt ends, slaw and baked beans. I placed my order on the phone and picked it up 10 minutes later. Unlike some of the reviewers on here, I did not find the restaurant to be unclean. The bathrooms were clean as well. To my utter my delight the best part was the food, of course. My plate of burnt ends was probably the best I have ever had and there was only one tiny piece of fat in the entire plate. The Slaw and the beans were good as well. These were the best burnt and I have ever had and I wish I had taken a picture before I smothered them in the excellent mild sauce. I would totally recommend this place and will definitely stop back on our next road trip. read more

So we were starving on our cross country trip and stopped here. It was more or less as expected. I got the brisket, my husband got some sort of grilled cheese hamburger monstrosity. Food was decent, nothing surprising. The brisket was tender and not too fatty, but the BBQ sauce choice was "Mild" or "Hot" and the "Hot" tasted exactly like the "Mild" but with more pepper. Meh. Decent beer choices,which I appreciate. This earned JD's another star. The serving sizes are 22 oz and 32 oz, which I didn't realize until I got my "short" 22 oz. Service was kind of poor, the server looked like she was having a bad day. Overall on this place- eh. If you want a place where you can throw your peanut shells on the floor, this is your restaurant. read more

I have given this place several tries. The food is never good, and occasionally the service is ok. This will be the last chance I give this business. They were out of all of their BBQ besides pulled pork at 6pm. They had a prime rib "special". I like prime rib and hadn't ever tried it here. So I gave it a shot. What an absolute disappointment. The quality of the meat was below average and the flavor was borderline inedible. The aus jus served with it was even worse. The side of mashed potatoes I ordered with it was cold. The cut they gave me was not even 12oz. I would have been grateful the prime rib was so bad, if it wasn't $30 for it. I can go down the street and get 16oz that is delicious for that price. It made me wonder. Were they out of BBQ because of poor management, or was this just a way to push people to get the prime rib that they are obviously making great margins on? If you like shitty service, JD's is the place for you. 1. Food: absolutely average bbq. Their sauce is good, but their meats are most the time fatty and/or overcooked. I do, however, LOVE their BBQ Cheese Fries. It's a must order everytime. And if you like gyros, I do recommend the gyro salad. Mmmm, i just love tzatziki sauce. 2. In the 5-6x we've eaten at JD's, there is NEVER anyone to greet us/sit us/wait us. We've literally had to seat ourselves, find our own menus and HUNT someone down to take our order. The "owner" is a joke. He 's always there, but ignores his guests. Loves to sit around eating and drinking his own food. They have a decent array of beer on tap--served in a mason jar. Can never go wrong with beer. 3. Environment - what you'd expect from a typical bbq place: Scattered peanut shells on the dirty floors, loud conversation, sports program playing on the televisions. Horrible. Placed an order to go, they said 15-20 minutes until pick up. We arrived 20 minutes later and found out they hadn't even started cooking our wings yet. So while we waited another 20 minutes we were left to observe the staff. There was one woman who was: Hostess, waitress, bartender, bussing, carry out and ringing people's checks! Felt bad for her but makes sense why she had no time for me or anyone else either. I had a direct view shot of the kitchen from where I was waiting as well. There was Standing water on the floor that the kitchen staff just stomped through. No one with gloves- no hair nets- and no washing of hands after taking money from customers then transitioning back to food service. We had hoped the food would somehow make up for the lack of service and poor/ unsafe food prep conditions- What were we thinking?!?!?! Got home- food was cold and not what we ordered. We literally took a few bites and threw it the trash. We enjoy eating out and normally don't even blink if a place isn't the greatest- but we really felt to warn people- health wise and not to mention a huge waste of money. We placed a call to the department of health as there needs to be proper accountability before someone gets sick. read more

I will not even give this place a rate... I have been here a few times and I wasn't impressed very much with their food. Every time I ordered carry out I had to go back because things were left out. I alway had to wait a long time for my food when ordering. The very last time I ate at JD's I ordered the mushroom swiss burger. It took them almost 45min to complete my order. I was starving and when I returned to work to eat my burger I didn't hesitate to take a big bite out of it. I started chewing and I got that feeling in my mouth, the feeling of a hair. I don't usually take time to review restaurants but felt this place deserved a great rating. In town watching my nephews baseball games for Dickinson State. I'm amazed at the low ratings. I had the brisket and 1/3 rack of ribs. I'm telling you that the brisket was the best I've ever had and the ribs were very good. The portions were enormous and the beer cheap. I brought home more meat than I was able to eat! The BBQ sauce was delicious too. Only disappointment was the cornbread which was dry and fairly bland. For the second time in a row we've come here and waited sooooo long to be acknowledged while waiting to be seated. My wife and I waited 15 minutes the first time before someone even acknowledged we were waiting to be seated. The second time we got to almost 20 minutes and gave up and left to eat somewhere else. The ridiculous thing is that while standing there waiting there was a constant stream of servers passing us by, none of them even wanted to make eye contact. If someone had just greeted us right away we wouldn't have minded waiting but we felt absolutely ignored and unwanted both times. We even had people behind us in line feeling the same way. After we left so did two other parties waiting behind us. They seriously need to fix the customer wait experience and this place would be great. read more
