I am in Dickinson for work & decided to give JD's a try. I have read previous reviews & agree with a lot of them for both the good & the bad reasons. So I went in for lunch on a freezing day so they were not very busy, the ratio of patron to staff twas about 3:1. Atmosphere is what you'd expect from a BBQ joint, beer selection is good but as some of my previous reviewers said the staff was just meh. I was seated at the bar (the only one at the bar) & waited 5 minutes prior to even being acknowledged & was finally helped by a waitress that wasn't, apparently, assigned to the bar but came to my rescue anyway. After a few more minutes the "bartender" came over & said she was sorry & forgot that she was assigned to the bar. Food came out pretty quick & was very tender & juicy (almost to a fault, I do like a little resistance when I eat BBQ), meat was pretty lean but I felt it was lacking a good smoky flavor. Sauces were good but I agree with previous post that both were the same with a little more spice in one. All in all it was an average experience & definitely didn't blow my hair back. I think management needs to give the staff a breath of fresh air aka swift kick in the ass! I don't normally post negative reviews but this place deserves a warning. It took over an hour to get our food, and when we finally got it out was cold. We ordered toasted cheese and half of the bread was burnt and half was not toasted. I had a grilled chicken ranch sandwich which had no ranch on it. Chili dog was fantastic, and the jumbolia was impressive. Back that with good service and a huge selection of on-tap beer and it's a great place. The only small complaint is the tri-tip sandwich wasn't fully trimmed and was difficult to bite through so I ended up eating it with a knife and fork...it was tasty though. read more

I go here for the brisket and ribs. Sauces taste great and the meat is usually good. On one occasion it was a bit dry though. I gave three stars because of the hamburgers. The meat is dry and greasy at the same time. Definitely better places in town to get a good burger. read more

The food is quick and *usually* quite tasty; the service is hit or miss. Most of the wait staff is excellent, but we've had a few that really shouldn't be working in the service industry, and we've gotten take out only to get home and realize they've forgotten a part of our meal. However, as my husband reminded me, very few people who live in Dickinson are here to work in the service industry, so that is just something we'll have to learn to deal with. Like some of the other reviews, the customer service was marginal at best. It seemed they were way under staffed. The food came out tasty but cold. We had brisket. The jambalaya was dry. It took us so long to get it we didn't send it back. Very pricey for the lack of quality. We won't be back. read more

Good food, fun atmosphere(though a bit loud), laid-back waitstaff, and fair prices. My wife and I enjoy visiting JD's, because we know we'll get great food at a good price. Yes, the floor is messy because of the peanut shells. Yes, it's loud because of the tight space and music playing. This is a country bar with country food. The beer selection is really good, and they serve big mugs! Great plus there. Frankly, I'm at a loss as to why people are only giving this place three stars. I'm here now with a party of about 14 in the overflow room.(kind of a private party setup) Nice atmosphere. I've been to numerous places that have peanut shells on the floor so I didn't even notice them until reading another post. Took about 20 mins to get half the drinks.(fountain drinks, not Starbucks secret menu concotions) Another 20 mins for the other half.(consistency!) About 45 mins in, an order of chips and queso finally mosied on through. We waited nearly 2 hours watching like disgruntled professional bridesmaids as people came in, got their food, and left. When the eats finally showed up several of the dishes were cold. My two meat platter gave me some insight on what it's like to go to a game as a Buffalo Bills fan. It was cold, and not very good. I don't know how much responsibility our server, Jalena, had in this debacle, but since she never said a word about the wait and had the balls to not only charge full price for the meal, but also collected the 18% group gratiuity with a straight face, she deserves a shutout. The macaroni salad was tasty, but a fairly small portion. Oh, and the ribs were a bit too chared and dry. The brisket was fair to midland. I've had worse. I've had more tender at a better place, but this aint a better place. I would first like to point out that I have never been COMPLETELY disgusted with JDs, only slightly.....that said, I've never been blown away, at all. I have worked in this industry for 7 years and I have a laundry list of details they can work on. 1 - Almost every time I have walked in, with 2 people or 8 people, it takes 5 - 10 minutes just to get someone to greet you or help you when they are at capacity. The servers tend to be slightly bitchy and often I have witnessed bartenders just standing around when they could be helping out. 2 - Not at all the hourly employees fault.....the manager (maybe he's the owner too?) can be regularly seen standing around, sitting at tables with people he knows, or hiding in the back. This is happening while the servers are scrambling just to pick up beverages at the bar. 3 - More on beverages; I routinely wait until my food has arrived just to get my beer from the bar. My last trip in I literally saw my beer sitting in the bar well for 25 mins. Now, I get it, they were busy.....but dark haired frumpy manager guy stared at it forever. Did he ever stop by? Once? Nope, never has. Never had anything comped regardless of bad service. 4 - Took my father in law and a few others in and had a horrible experience. Incorrect sides brought out, and one specifically happened to said father in law. Never got his salad, ever, and when we told the server she just said, "sorry." Any manager to be found? Nope. The other errors were minor but still...you get the idea. 5 - Lastly, the place is called JD's BBQ. Best thing I've eaten there? A burger. One visit out of a dozen delivers moist, tender brisket. Went to this restaurant and got a take out order of a half of chicken and a brisket sandwich. The brisket sandwich was the worst brisket I ever had. No moisture. Dry as a desert. If I spend 15 bucks for a sandwich, make it worth eating. The chicken was pretty good. The skin was somewhat crispy. The dark meat was moist and the breast was ok too. They all walked by several times and they didn't even make eye contact. We waited about 5 - 10 minutes and left... I've been in the food business, I know how hard it is to squeeze a buck out of an incredibly competitive market. The owner of this operation is either broke or incredibly tired. He has dismissed all of the essentials to keeping a restaurant vibrant and alive. Our ribs were at least three days old, had no real flavor, and were a complete disappointment. The worst feeling is when you're sitting in a restaurant chewing the food down like your dog knowing that you are receiving zero satisfaction. I wish there was a way you could take away a restaurants name and change it to something that really represents it, BBQ is not what this place is good at cooking! Maybe the french fries but not BBQ. Ordered the 1/3 rack of ribs and the 1/2 lb of brisket meal. Let me start by saying the food was very bland and I felt like I was fighting the ribs to get them off the bones. From every other restaurant, even from a microwave meal I've eaten before the ribs always fall off the bones but this one was a fight, felt like I needed to get a knife and start cutting. The brisket wasn't much better. Most of the meat was dry and tasteless, like something that was cooked last week and then frozen and then reheated in the microwave. I was very disappointed at the food. Really expected more from one of the few BBQ restaurants in the city. I have been to many BBQ places. This one is average at best. Ribs were good and meaty; tender but still had body. The two sauces at the table were good. Brisket was tough and the cuts I received were about 25% fat; more than I usually get (understanding there is usually fat on brisket for flavor and moisture). Baked beans were very good (9/10). Boneless wings were overcooked (dry), and bone-in wings were smaller and more expensive than BWW; not sure why some other reviewers say the bone-in wings are large - they are just normal/small sized drummies (no wing attached as shown in other reviewers' pics from 2018; maybe they changed suppliers). Burger was good 7/10. Fries were good 8/10. No tap list from the waitress; was told to walk up to the bar and read the taps myself, then I walked back to the table and ordered the beer; why do I need a waitress at this point?! Had to ask for forks (basic thing, right?), and had to ask for refills for water and soda, every time. Overall decent flavors, but fell short and not worth the money in my opinion. read more

Went to JD's on motel recommendation and were pleasantly surprised. I'm not ready to put their brisket up with good Austin BBQ, but it was tender and cooked just right. Go with the spicy sauce, because it really is pretty mild with just a little kick. My wife had the chicken platter, and I think it could have been cooked just a little more but was satisfactory. Often you don't get greeted when you walk in, while your waiting you can see in the kitchen and the kitchen staff is never wearing gloves while handling our food nor do they have clean clothes on. A lot of times there's dirty dishes stacked on the counter as well. Not very good for presentation wise especially when you just walk in the door and that's all you see. The food is hit or miss. Some days your bbq is delicious and juicy, other days it tastes like it was yesterday's bbq and is dry and not appetizing. I also wonder how often the mason jars our silverware sit in get washed? I've found peanut shells inside them before and i can only wonder if that's from the previous tables. it's also VERY cold in there!! I almost always have to wear a sweater or go grab my coat from the car. Only bonus is the large Beer selection and the friendly servers. We usually get sat in Jess's section and she is always lovely to us and our family! She's always happy and makes sure everything is perfect which makes our experience wonderful! BBQ used to be pretty good. Last couple of times gone downhill. Had the ribs and brisket. Ribs were like beef jerky, very dry and overcooked. Brisket was also dry but not as bad as the ribs. I realize that I am not satisfied with the majority of restaurants in Dickinson because of quality consistency and customer service. However, I have been there a handful of times, most of the time they are just fine. I don't like that they charge for a 2nd drink refill. And they charge for side of sauce/ranch. (just increase the cost of a beverage and find a way to absorb the cost of the sauces and extras into the meal prices so the customers don't feel like they are being "nickel & dimed" when they see the receipt) I don't eat pork myself, so I haven't tried many of the BBQ dishes, however they gyro sandwiches are pretty good, and the cod sandwiches are pretty good too. The burgers look amazing, and the french fries are pretty good. I love the fried pickles too. The potato salad is only ok, and small portioned. I make a better potato salad so I won't order it from them. One time I asked to have a salad with my gyro instead of the fries and they told me that they can't substitute... but since then, they have done it for others. We have friends that have had horrible experiences recently and they refuse to go back. My husband refuses to go back too. So I haven't had a reason to go back, because I am not going to take the kids by myself! :-) The servers are usually college-age and maybe even high school-age, and they all seem inexperienced... I am a professional and have the skills to work well in most any customer service situation so I am likely to be harder on someone that lacks professionalism. I do understand that people have to start somewhere, but you need to keep cool and professional while in training. The previous reviewer made some good points, but I think he was there on a good day. Decently priced for Dickinson. All restaurants in the Bakken are so ridiculous, so compared to others it's not bad. Drink specials are not bad. Food is pretty good. Great atmosphere, the wait staff has always been great to me. I think a girl named Mariah has waited on me several times. I normally sit at the bar and my drink never gets half empty before they refill it. It's a nice break from the same old steak house, or bar and grill food.
