We may have had a good experience because it wasn't busy. We were in before 5 on a random Saturday at the end of September and the place was mostly empty. All of the workers appeared to be high school students, and they were all doing their jobs; our young waitress was especially sweet. I got a BLT and a cup of soup, which was creamy chicken veg that night. The soup is self-serve. This soup was so good that I was sad I short-changed myself and only filled my little kettle halfway. I wish I had asked if I could go get more because I loved that soup. It was savory, not at all thick and goopy, and the chunks of chicken were so tender. BLT was generous and neatly made. This was a terrible experience for my family and I. It took over an hour to get our food. Our drinks were never once refilled. After order we weren't checked on once until our food was served and not checked on after that. We had to ask twice for our tab and eventually walked up to register to pay. The server was not friendly at all and looked miserable to even serve us. She never gave us her name but she was a young woman. Food was okay. Two of came in to refuel, both the car and ourselves. It was busy as the breakfast buffet crowd were still finishing up. We were looking for a lunch option. We ordered a Crispy Chicken Salad and the Hot Beef with Whipped Potatoes. They were very slow on the refills but we got them eventually. The meals were both excellent. It was 7 a.m. and the Bowman Super 8 had coffee that tasted like so much dishwater. We were headed to Roosevelt National Park, so we decided to try breakfast here. Glad we did. Gigantic portions, friendly waitstaff, and the coffee we desperately needed. Plus the entire place was decorated like an old cavalry fort on the frontier. I stopped at this wonderful restaurant on the way back to Fargo, from Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Trapper's Kettle is located just off I-94 in the small town of Belfield, ND. The restaurant offers traditional American Cuisine. It only gets a 3 star rating. However, I encourage you to experience it for yourself. The service is okay. When I visited, they were short staffed. I was more in love with the ambiance of the place than the food itself. I felt that the food was good but not great. My waitress was okay. Not sure if she was tired or overworked but at least portray that you enjoy being at work and that you have some passion for serving others. I do not know if she was having a bad day. For my entree I ordered the Liver and Onions (extra onions) with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy. It came with a salad. My waitress didn't tell me to help myself to the salad bar. I had to figure that out on my own. I love how the salad bar rests in a canoe. Brilliant idea! Their salad bar offers the typical vegetables and side items that you would expect at a salad bar. Nothing exceptional here. I do not remember if bread or dinner rolls were offered as part of the meal or dining here. Liver & Onions were good. I'm not a big Mashed Potatoes and Gravy person. However, I felt that their Mashed Potatoes were good. I passed on dessert. I decided to have fudge that I bought in Medora for the car ride back to Fargo. Browse all the pictures I uploaded. The ambiance and decorations of this place is brilliant. I just loved the rustic look and feel. I do agree that the quality of their food could improve. Also, pay attentions for signs on the side of the highway (I-94) that point the way to Trapper's Kettle. I recommend stopping here and checking it. Even if it's for just a cup of coffee or cold beverage. The various decorations on the walls and the overall experience is worth the visit. Especially if you're a fan of a rustic setting. I'm not sure if I would return here. I would probably explore a different food option. However, I'm glad that I decided to stop and dine here. If need a stop for breakfast- this is a great place! The waitress was awesome- attentive and pleasant. The food was hot, flavorful and presented on flat metal skillet. Our table had the two egg breakfast, biscuits and gravy and an omelette- would order all again. The environment was clean and depicted the name of the restaurant to a tee- almost museum like! This is one of very few options in town and, frankly, I'm surprised there hasn't been issue with the board of health. The "buffet" was some random items on heaters, clearly prepared more than an hour in advance and withering in the open. Their salad bar was a near-empty bowl of lettuce surrounded by poorly refrigerated basics. The kicker was that there were probably 20 tables in use (seat yourself but about a third of the restaurant was roped off) and about a third of those were occupied. The others were piled with old dishes of previous customers that had finished and left. We honestly had nowhere sit, even if we wanted to stay. No music, no servers visible, no greeting when we came in... not sure how this place stays in business! I gave them an extra star for the kitschy décor, otherwise it would have been one star. read more

I wouldn't even give them a half star the waitress never introduced herself just walked by and slammed a drink on the table and then came back and told us she didn't have the other drink we ordered we waited like a good hour and 20 minutes For our food, we ordered the steak breakfast and a buffalo burger my steak was completely charcoal could not eat it if I wanted to I asked for medium eggs, but they gave me very well done eggs you could tell the hashbrowns we're not made fresh I also found a hair in the hashbrowns I asked for them to remake the steak where they were going to remake the steak and then told me they didn't have anymore steak I think they were lying. I didn't have to pay for my food because I didn't eat it my husband had to pay for his food however, he was too grossed out to eat it and never touched it. He took it to go, but denied it. I was extremely kind and understanding, however did not like how when I brought up the issue with my food it seemed as though they didn't really care about anything they did wrong with my food. It just seemed as though they felt like I was an inconvenience to them and wanted me out I did eat a tad bit of the hashbrowns and a couple pieces of toast. However, I was extremely sick the entire day because I have a very sensitive stomach and it just grossed me out. Will probably never go back read more

The BLT was on thin cheap white bread. Didn't give a lot of fries which are cheap. Short black haired waitress was not friendly at all and kind of rude. They were definitely short staffed. If eating amongst stuffed critters doesn't bother you this is a good breakfast stop on Hwy 85 and I-94. The place is pretty cool, they have a little shop, lodging and the restaurant. I ordered 2 eggs over easy, bacon, hash browns and coffee. Everything was cooked just right and they make a good cup of java. I have to comment on the service, the waitress was Linda and she is a superstar. The dining area is huge and there were about 10 tables occupied spread throughout a big area and she was taking orders, bussing tables, cashiering and topping off coffee cups in a timely manner. Linda was working hard and doing an excellent job of providing excellent customer service. She has been doing this for 41 years and still doing it very well. I rate the meal 3 stars, it was pretty good and the price was reasonable. I give 2 extra stars because the service Linda provides is a rarity these days. read more

Stopped here for breakfast. Love, love, love the decor. Great paintings, animal traps hanging everywhere, taxidermy animals adorned the dining area. Very tasteful. The salad bar exterior was a canoe! They were very busy that day and we only saw 2 servers. Got menus pretty quick, took her a bit to get our drink order, then another little bit to take our order. Food came fairly quickly. I ordered a half order of biscuits and gravy with a side of bacon. My friend got the western omelet with hash browns, marble rye toast and a side of bacon. The biscuits and gravy were delicious, but barely warm. The bacon was good but a bit "stiff" not really chewy but not crispy either. My friend said her food was really good, omelet had great flavor and hash browns cooked to perfection. Server did check back a few times. EMPLOYEES ARE PROHIBITED TO WEAR MASKS Trapper's Kettle was easy to get to and right next to our hotel. Upon entering the establishment we found it busy and pretty packed. In the mist of covid, only one other family had masks on. Not even employees wore masks. We later found out that management has strictly prohibited staff to wear masks. That's right! They will NOT allow their staff members to wear masks if they wish to do so. Our server was great, though we waited an hour for our food. The food was yummy and the decor of the place is very fun. However, I can not in good conscious recommend an establishment where the management does not care for the health and safety of their employees nor their customers. It is clear management has put their own personal beliefs over their staff and customers. This review does not reflect the service or food of this establishment. But rather, managements inability to properly protect their staff and customers. It makes me wonder what other rules they are willing to bend/break. read more

I don't know where to start. This place is definitely unique. It's in a small town off I94 in Western ND, so it's pretty easy to get to if you're driving through. I'm not sure how many people are driving from ND to Montana though. The decor is over-the-top-old-mountain-man-decided-to-open-a-restaurant with a bunch of taxidermy animals. You are completely surrounded by dead animals in glass display cases and bear traps hanging from the ceiling. But again, it's unique. Although we stopped here for breakfast, I ended up ordering a French dip sandwich with hashbrowns. Also, we got an order of scones (aka fry bread). The meat in the French dip was really tough, which sort of ruined it. It was edible, but didn't have much else going for it. The scones were like the ones raved about in Utah. I didn't really care for them in Utah, and I felt the same here. Greasy dough like this isn't that great with honey and butter. It's too overwhelming. I would prefer something more savory personally. Although the food was a little blah, I have to give them props for their theme. It's worth a stop if you need a place to eat and you are on the interstate. read more

The place was pretty empty around 11AM when we stopped by. There was about 7 or 8 tables total seated. The waitress told us the salad & soup bar didn't come out until noon, but it came out around 11:15AM - that was delicious. The Borscht and salad were good. We waited around 45 minutes to 50 minutes for our order to come out, which was a buffalo burger and a chicken fried steak. The waitress informed me she forgot to put in our order. (I noted she was on her phone the entire time behind the counter and didn't bother ONCE to even get us refills.) I told her we would still like our food, I figured it couldn't possibly take more than 15 minutes to make these two dishes. Fast forward another 40 - 45 minutes we decide to leave - I want to state we still didn't get a single refill or did the waitress check on us ONCE. I get you are short-staffed, but the restaurant wasn't full and you were on your phone more than you checked on us. Take some pride in your job. We paid for our drinks only, as the other waitress could tell we were upset (but patient) but just wanted to leave as we were done waiting. (The other waitress didn't bother coming up to the counter to speak to us - who made the mistakes.) I'm a customer service manager, so trust me when I say I have immense patience and I am not rude to staff - even if they are the ones in the wrong. I just wanted to leave as I was so flabbergasted by the awful service. I'm glad they comped the food, I paid for our drinks only. (The one single pour for each one lol) They ended up giving my partner the food to go once he came back in to use the restroom as well. I'm so glad we did not have to pay for the food. The buffalo burger was burned to oblivion and the chicken fried steak was tough, chewy, and the breading was greasy and burned. I would not recommend this place for something you have to order off of the menu EXCEPT the salad and soup bar. (Maybe bring your own water bottle.) The service was so awful, however, that we probably won't be back. Shame, the restaurant was really lovely looking and the ambiance would have been great. read more

We called our food before we got there. Told them we would come in to eat it. We ended up sitting there for 30 minutes when the waitress said, I am sorry the cook thought it was to go. She was nice about it but the food was cold and we had two little girls with us. The manager told us we would have to wait til the end of their orders to have our food remade. The food was alright but because we got there at 8:30 we were rushed to eat and pushed out the door. They close PROMPTLY at 9:00 and these North Dakotans aren't nice about wanting to make/keep business. (I am a 6th generation North Dakotan... And I couldn't be this rude if I tried.) I was at the gift-shop area at 8:55 and the woman behind the counter had all the lights off and said that all the tills were shut down. (Yeah, ok, not quite 9 yet but whatever) She didn't care that we had been traveling to ND for family and looking for "Pride of Dakota" products to bring to our friends for the holidays in Nevada and California. (Where we were traveling from) would have easily dropped $100+ there. Guess I'll look somewhere else. Not ADA handicapped accessible bathroom. My wheelchair didn't fit in the stall by like 3-4 feet. I had to "do my business" in an open stall with people walking in and out. Embarrassing. All in all, I wouldn't want to stop there again. If I was driving, I wouldn't have. It's not bad for the middle of nowhere. Only about 3.5 starts with, bit upgraded to 4 because the waitress was friendly and it was literally the only thing open in this damn town at 6:30 pm on a Thursday (even the Dairy Queen is closed, seriously??) I had the stake burger sandwich (I think that's what it's called) and fries. Like I said, pretty good. Not sure you'd get very far if you don't have one of the burgers though. read more

I am happy to say this place wowed me. I walked in and was welcomed by lots of furry friends hanging on the wall and some awesome animals behind a wall. They also had old school traps and cast iron pans the wall for other decorations, which where hanging on wood so it made it nice and cozy! I ordered the hickory grilled chicken sandwich. Its my go to when I am some where new and the menu is not showing a whole lot of options for super healthy kick I'm on. THIS CHICKEN SANDWHICH WAS AMAZING! Most restaurants say "grilled" chicken and come out with something that was cooked on a flat top, not this place. This place gave me real grilled chicken with charcoal burns on the meat. The bacon was thick and the BBQ sauce was so good. I literally had to tell myself to slow down and enjoy this food. My boyfriend got the hickory burger and he said it was good, but the BBQ sauce was way to sweet to him. Its hard to tell if anything he eats is actually good because I get the same response all the time. So for this review because mine was so good, then so was his! We chose Trapper's Kettle ahead of time and included it in our recent vacation itinerary after studying it online. To be honest, we weren't expecting much, given the size of Belfield. But as it turned out, Trapper's Kettle proved to be a solid dinner stop. I had a big steak, with baked potato, salad and ice cream and left satisfied. If I had one complaint, I'd say the service was a tad slow, but my wife and I would return if we were in the Belfield area ever again. read more
