Trapper's Kettle had many dead animals on the walls. Many. Like everywhere which I realize is perfectly normal for many people. It was not so normal for me and actually I sortof felt like I had wandered onto the set of a Wes Anderson movie. It was pretty darn quirky. The restaurant is large and if you are driving from Medora ND to Custer, South Dakota, it is one of your very few choices. We had a very friendly waitress who was quick and efficient. I had a BLT and my husband had a buffalo burger. I also had a lemonade and I was satisfied with my meal. They also have pie and it was decent. The food is definitely overpriced for what you get. The burgers aren't used fast enough and sit in the fridge too long before being cooked to serve, along with the live and buffalo burgers. While out visiting my old man out in North Dakota. On our way back from Theodore Roosevelt National Park (Badlands) we decided to stop into the Trapper's Kettle. To start off our waitress was very sweet. We sat down and ordered our food. My dad and I went with the chicken fried steak with potatoes. The meal came with a side salad which was really good. The salad bar was big and had all sorts of options. The gravy, breading on the steak and potatoes had excellent flavor. Sadly the only negative thing about our meal with the steak. The steak was very gristly and hard to cut with the butter knife we were given. All around the flavor was great, but I wish it was a better cut of meat. My dads girlfriend went with the French Dip sandwich w/ fries. She said she enjoyed her food. The service was great and our waitress was very attentive. I would definitely go back to this place but would probably try something different. I really liked all the cool animals they had all over the restaurant. Pretty bad. The salad bar is one of the saddest things I've ever witnessed in my life, and I have seen the Sarah McLachlan dying puppy commercials. Just ate there is last weekend while attending the Medora Musical. I also stayed at the Trapper's Inn. Room there was very nice and clean. But the restaurant was not so good. Slow service in getting my prepared meal to the table. I had to ask for them to deliver it to my table as it was sitting up there at the window for a long time. Very poor in sanitizing the tables. Some ended up sitting at a "dirty table" that the dishes had been removed, but was not wiped down. It was NOT that busy, with at least two waitresses and many working in the kitchen. Food.... not the worst I have ever seen.. I would say the best thing they have going for them is their salad bar, which is adorably served out of a kettle and soup cauldron which is also served out of adorable cast iron kettles. Over all I would not suggest this place for their food. It was so so. My meal was alright but the other two people I was eating with had messed up meals and had to be remade but our server never told us about that so I sat with my food getting cold while we all wondered where their food was... come to find out it was being remade because they messed it up. Would have been nice to know all they did was put onions on the sandwich.. they could have taken them off and we wouldn't have had to have waited...next time just ask server lady. Service... sucked. Not everyone is from Belfield and understands this place. Our server didn't tell us to go up to the front when the meal was over and pay. We somewhat figured that was the case when she never returned to our table but we never got a bill to take up there so we sat and sat and politely waited. Come to find out you go up to the front and tell them what you had eaten. Annoying and rude of the server to let us sit for 20 minutes before we wandered aimlessly up the front in search of an answer to how to exit our dining experience. read more

Have to echo the most recent reviewer - the food was not good, the staff was not friendly, and did a poor job. We decided to make it a quick 2:00 stop to stretch our legs before the final push home, and that was a mistake. It was not busy - the peak was 7 tables the entire time with 2 waitresses. Despite that, coffees and waters sat empty until one of the 2 could be flagged down. We finally went and found a spoon on our own once our order finally arrived - wrong. And when the replacement arrived it too was wrong - all the extra wrong food made up for the excessive prices I guess. We overheard 3 other tables complain multiple times - one having cold food, sending it back and getting another cold dish. As the previous reviewer said, keep going down the interstate. read more

This place reminds me of the colossal lodge in which I used to take care of a shitzu dog and much livestock for a world famous big game hunter/poacher. He was a man of small stout stature, big guns and Swedish mail order brides which he would trade in for a younger one every 5 years or so. He also had his home/palace full ( stuffed to the gills full) of stuffed carcasses from all over the world. Many of them illegal. This place seems to feature local wildlife but every available space is covered with a hide or head or entire person of North Dakota game. If you have never been around this type of "decor" it can be unsettling. If you grew up with hunters in your family and a deer head in your dining room this place may come off as over the top in a Norman Bates kind of despairing way. There are also all kinds of traps hanging in any spot the heads and bodies missed. The food: I was craving steak since we kept passing signs that said you're in BEEF country. I had a classic sirloin and mashed potatoes., I liked that the potatoes still had their red skins. Brown gravy was extra and clearly from a packet. The steak was charcoal grilled to perfection for the medium well I asked for. High quality obviously range raised meat. A roll comes with that reminded me of my high school cafeteria rolls which the lunch ladies made from scratch and were fantastic. Salad bar comes with entree and it was reminiscent of the salad bars of my youth at Pizza Hut only these dressings were much better. Our waitress was sweet and attentive. Cashier seemed burned out and worn out, disappointed in life in general but was still nice if not prompt. Truly a curio place and if you're interested in trapping that has been done in the last 100 years in the area my guess is you could learn a lot from the various displays. They have a local joke paper on each table and I get they are poking fun at themselves with the, You May Be A Redneck if... Jokes but sorry the KKK innuendo is just bad taste and not cute or vaguely amusing to be thinking about at an otherwise very decent road meal. We stopped in here to have lunch on a weekend. We waited to be seated for like ten minutes and then were just told go sit at that table there. The service didn't get much better after. No refills, no checking on our food and the server didn't engage us at all. We all had cheeseburgers and they were okay. Overall the price was in the right range. read more

Not the best meals we've eaten but just OK. We walked in just before closing and maybe they were angry they had to feed us or this was just the way it was. I had a Rueben sandwich with a few strands of sauerkraut and something that was supposed to pass for thousand island dressing. Could have used a bit more meat but it was edible. read more

Stopped at the motel after a long drive. Late night front desk worker was extremely friendly and helpful. The bartender was knowledgable about the area, could answer all my questions and makes one of the best Bloody Mary's I've ever had. Worth the stop! read more

Breakfast may be good, but dinner is not. Three adults. Chicken fried chicken, dinner buffet, and a rueben = $50. 2 had water & 1 had a pop. Was told buffet would be $10 but they charged $15. White gravy was like glue, mashed potatoes and brown gravy was gross. Rueben hardly touched. Chicken fried chicken edible but thats it, kind of stringy and hard(hard to explain/weird texture) soup not good, again, weird texture, beer cheese, soup that seemed like it was thickened with cornstarch, hardly any cheese flavor(highly doubt any actual cheese was used, probably all processed) and then it seemed like it had rotel dumped in it and was salty. The buffet was all unsupervised so lids were all off the food so everything formed a skin or was dry(like the crusty corn bread ends that had been neglected for some time) and the service was too slow. Stopped for breakfast at the recommendation of friends. Really good breakfast. Had the special. 2 eggs, bacon, toast and hash browns for 7.99. Eggs over easy were more medium bordering on hard. Everything else was great. Thick smoked bacon, crispy hash browns, and toast lightly toasted. Would have done 5 stars if not for the eggs. But, I guess I'd rather have them over done than under. Order came out in just over 5 minutes. Really fast. Staff very friendly. Will definitely be stopping here again. read more

This place was a dump. I do not recommend it to anyone that wants a somewhat clean place to stay. Our entire cabin had a strong odd smell, the bathrooms did not include soap and staff was unfriendly. Overall the place is not worth the stop. read more
