Just down the hill from the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library is the quaint town of Medora, North Dakota. It is a small town with several local haunts well frequented by the townies. Uber casual, cowboy themed, and lots of wood makes you smile when you walk in the door. The reuben eggrolls were an interesting slant on western / asian eggrolls. The taste was unique and a pleasant new treat. The bourbon BBQ burger with pepper jack cheese, onion sticks, bacon and a custom BBQ sauce was juicy, nice BBQ twang and crunch from the sticks. Highly enjoyed! For a true feeling of being in Roosevelt's hood and embracing the frontier, stop by Boots Bar and Grill. The people are kind, friendly and more than welcoming. This seemed to be the only restaurant open in Medora on the day we passed through. The ambiance was western style and appropriate for the area and the bar and grill theme. We were seated promptly and served quickly as well. The waitress (Katie) was professional and checked on us as she passed by. She was really busy so this was as truly impressive. The food was a mixed bag. We ordered an elk burger and French fries. We had last enjoyed elk 12 years before so were excited to see it on the menu. The fries were quite good, well seasoned and so plentiful we couldn't finish them. The elk burger was disappointing visually as it had been formed using a press (or they buy pre formed and frozen patties). This thin patty was as dry as expected from the sight. One taste and we wished we'd gone for the cheaper options; possibly bison or beef. Overall we have had worse food and the service was great. I'd try them again but not for elk. read more

Service was very slow, as the servers weren't paying attention and we sat there for a while. I finally had to walk up to the bar and ask if I ordered at the bar. We were here for a private party so we were up on the top floor of the restaurant. The waitress who was serving our large party was the sweetest server ever. It was very chaotic with all of the people upstairs, but she made sure everybody got their order. As for the food, I did order the tri-tip sandwich as she did mention that was probably one of the most popular items. I smoke tri-tip all of the time and I feel bad rating it this way, but I didn't particularly care for the sandwich sandwich. However, my brother ordered the same thing and he loved it. Broad menu options, great post-hiking food, and fantastic service! The French dip was excellent, especially because the default is just meat/bread with dip! We both got huge piles of sweet potato fries that were cooked to crispy perfection. And the wings were also fantastic! We somehow spilled a full glass of water all over the table, and the staff instantly sprung into action to clean it up. They were so kind and quick, and really went above and beyond. When our friends from Gillette, WY visited us during our stay in Medora, we decided to try Boots. Our server was good, but the food was lacking. Our friends had the pizza, but only ate half and took the rest with them. They were going to throw it away, but we took it. The next day, we reheated it in our motorhome's convection microwave...it was OK. Quite frankly, I dont remember what we had, but it was not good. Does Medora have any decent restaurants? I dislike giving bad reviews (look at my history), but this is the best I can do for Boots and Little Missouri River. I dont recommend. We ate here four times during our visit to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and if that doesn't tell you how good it is, I don't know what will! lol We tried the PB&Jelly Time burger, the fish n chips, the chicken bacon ranch sandwich and the white bbq chicken sandwich - all were hot and fresh, deliciously seasoned and well balanced. We also fell in love with their french fries. They were just so good! Crispy on the outside, seasoned perfectly, and light and fluffy on the inside. They also have a ton of dipping sauces, so if you're a dipping sauce fan like I am, try them all! I absolutely loved having my cocktails served up in a giant cowboy boot glass! The food and drinks were great, the waiters were easy going and personable - the service was fast too! The inside of the restaurant is like walking into an old western saloon - They've got saddles and other horse tack hanging up everywhere, and they have wagon wheel style tables and live edge wooden tables too - so cool! Watch out - they will charge you more than you sign off for on your credit card receipt!!! I have my copy of the credit card receipt for dinner & drinks (including a 17.3% tip), for my wife & I at Boots Bar in Grill in Medora. When my monthly Visa bill arrived I saw that Boots Bar & Grill decided to increase the charge. I called Boots Bar & Grill three separate times and spoke with various employees including a manager, and asked for help resolving this. All attempts were unsuccessful; with lots of double talk and excuses, but zero sense that they wanted to correct the charge. Hopefully Boots Bar & Grill doesn't do this regularly to all of their out of state visitors to Medoa. read more

Looking for a bite to eat in town and ran across Boots Bar & Grill. When you enter the restaurant you see a sign to seat yourself. You can choose a table, hi top and of course the bar. We found a table towards the back. Waitress came over quickly took our drink order and was back to take our dinner order. Waitress was very sweet, busy taking orders and bussing her tables. But service was great. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich with a side salad $ 2.00 up charge, but very fresh. Sandwich was over cooked and very salty. The fish tacos were absolutely amazing- the sweet potato fries were overcooked. Hence the four stars instead of five. My husband had the tri-tip sandwich with fries and it was delicious as well. This definitely could have been five stars. If the sweet potato fries weren't burnt. Service was great. My time at Boots is always wonderful! Excellent food, excellent service, and a fun atmosphere. Their pretzel + dip appetizer is to die for!! It used to come with Bloody Mary cream cheese, too (bring that back, please.) I am also a huge fan of their Brussels sprout tacos - yum!! Highly recommended. Stopped in for lunch after a busy morning of hiking and sight seeing at Theodore Roosevelt south unit. It was seat yourself and I found a spot at a high top table near the bar. Service was average, nothing over the top, got the job done. Definitely western theme inside with lots of tables. I had the Killdeer, which was their take on a Philly cheesesteak. The garlic aioli/sauce added a nice flavor. I do wish the steak was sliced thinner or smaller pieces, as it was tough to bite through and the entire strip would come out when attempting to take a bite. There are not many dining options in Medora. We ordered the Ruben Egg Rolls and the Steak basket with onion rings. The Ruben Egg Rolls and the onion rings were EXTREMELY greasy. Grossly greasy! The steak is cut into strips and then fried, however they were not greasy but not flavorful. I tried the mushroom gravy that we thought came with it but there is a $2.00 up charge (not worth it) but that didn't help them taste any better so I tried ranch dressing, still didn't help so I reached for the ketchup and that helped a tad. Maybe the other things on the menu would have been better. Our meal was bad. So bad I got sick within 10 minutes of eating. Yes, it was that greasy. The atmosphere reminds me of Texas Roadhouse. Kinda expensive for the size, pretty tasty pizza but nothing special, I'd say a 7/10 Second night a big group went in and I had fish tacos. Walleye was good and crispy but taco needed sauce. I've had fish and chips in countless places across the country, but their fish basket was hands down some of the best I've ever had perfectly crispy, flaky, not too much breading and seasoned just right. Locally caught walleye. Every bite was golden perfection. I also tried the tri-tip sandwich, and it was next level, tender, juicy, and packed with smoky flavor. And if you're in the mood for something a little offbeat but absolutely delicious, the peanut butter and jelly burger is a surprising hit. It sounds wild, but the sweet and savory combo totally works and left me wanting more. On top of the incredible food, the service was outstanding--friendly, fast, and genuinely welcoming. Boots bar and grill is definitely a popular spot in Medora. The interior consists of wooden picnic tables and a huge bar. The service was wonderful, especially with how packed the place was. Unfortunately, they were all out of the jalapeño chokecherry jelly, so a couple of us had to change our orders. White Buffalo Chicken Sandwich.
