Very local joint, cash only business operated by some young girls. If you like sweets they make really good very very sweet caramel roll, still warm served. Had the French toast with eggs for my breakfast it was mediocre but does its job. The toasts are not the thick cut toast so it was a bit bland. Strolled in for lunch after visiting the parks. A very cozy, at home atmosphere. The man behind the counter eventually came around to speak to us; he told us stories about other guests, about the area. He was absolutely delightful and highlight of the trip. The food itself was tasty enough, but I'm afraid I'll be glancing over that for the star: The Caramel Roll. Absolutely HORRIBLE customer service! We informed the owner/manager that we didn't like, nor eat the biscuits and gravy and eggs. The gravy was brown and greasy, tasted like lard. It was terrible, tasted nothing like typical biscuits and gravy. The eggs were dry and overcooked with no flavor. Definitely not real, fresh eggs. Very nicely, I said that I didn't like the meal, I didn't eat it, and would like it taken off the bill. I was VERY RUDELY told that there was nothing wrong with the food and that we had to pay for it. Again, I calmly said that it was not good and asked about customer satisfaction. He angrily said it's the law and if we didn't pay for it, he'd call the POLICE! We have never been treated so badly by any restaurant before. The Cowboy Cafe has been a Medora fixture for many years. It's not at all fancy, but it has a lot of ambiance, including walls lined with portraits of the local cowboys and ranchers from around Medora. Yes, they only take cash, but there's an ATM machine about 100 feet away, so it's not a big deal. The French toast was very good, and they did a great job fulfilling my request for extra crispy bacon. The caramel rolls are beyond divine. Those alone are worth coming back for. Service was fine on the day we went, and we went at their busiest time for breakfast. They were also disinfecting tables between each customer, but the menus were not being disinfected. read more

So form a line and wait. Once you get inside and seated, be prepared to spend about $15 a person for breakfast with a drink. This will be about an $8 breakfast back at our home town diner. The decor is like taking a step back in time. The walls are covered in old pictures of cowboys from the past. Now to the food. First morning in Medora, my husband and I stepped outside of the Rough Riders Hotel and meandered over to the Cowboy Cafe. It is one of the most quaint diners I have ever seen. Im giving them a one star because i never even got to eat there. I asked a waitress if i could order food to go, a very simple order, because we had a dog in the truck and couldnt sit in the restaurant because it was 88 degrees. She was nice and said, "Sure, and gave me a menu. I politely waited behind 3 groups who were waiting to get seated. When i got to the counter a completely unfriendly, heavy, grouchy older man said, "No. You can't order to go. We're too busy." No, "Im sorry" or anything in the form of customer service. Nothing. Even after I explained that our dog was in the car he just repeated the same thing. I can't see how taking a quick, simple, to go order would bother anyone or cause major catastrophe. Also, maybe some courtesy or better customer treatment. I wouldnt eat there ever, even if the food was amazing. After being in Medora for a few days, we were craving something greasy and "homey" feeling. Of course we had to head to the Cowboy Cafe! We were sadly mistaken... the table was dirty, it had dried syrup and jelly stuck to it, there was dust on every surface, and the carpet looked as dingy as possible. Upon looking at the menu, we were more disappointed to see that there were no home cooking options, like the omelette we were craving. I settled for the French toast dish and I wish I would have walked out then and there. The French toast was rubbery and sickeningly sweet with too much nutmeg, it was next to impossible to get straws or a refill on coffee, and the waitress was very distracted with a particular customer that wasn't us. I think you get what you'd expect here in terms of food. There's nothing special about it other than it reflects tastes of about 30 years ago. I was only mildly surprised they didn't have Sanka on the menu. I thought the prices were high for what you get, but they've got a captured market in Medora. The service was flat - just order taking, dropping off the food and a couple of check-ins on coffee refills. The place is pretty cool inside with old ranch brands burned into the wood and pictures of local cowboys and ranchers mounted to the pinewood walls. The charm for me was that the place seemed unaware of itself and that made it cool. But then they have a huge display of t-shirts. coffee mugs and stickers. All in all, an okay place to eat breakfast. And if you're in Medora, pal, you ain't got many choices that are good, so it's acceptable. read more
